Infinix Zero 40 5G – Design

Dimension 164.31×74.47×7.9mm
Weight 195g
Colour Rock Black, Violet Garden, Moving Titanium
IP Rating IP54

Infinix Zero 40 5G has an eye-catching design. We had the Moving Titanium variant for this review and it stands out.

The shiny silver finish has a subtle dual-tone colour shift at the back. While some users might find this design choice flimsy, it adds a premium touch to the phone especially its combination with the 3D-cruved front.

The back catches the light, doesn’t attract fingerprints or smudges and looks sleek without being over the top. Infinix clearly checked all the boxes here.

Zero 40 5G has an ultra-slim form. It feels lightweight and comfortable in hand without being bulky. The phone is surprisingly easy to use one-handed, which is a big advantage for users like us.

The camera module is a circular design with four lens cutouts. While the design is noticeable, it doesn’t stick out too much. The engraved camera features add a cool touch and the overall design feels well thought-out. The LED flash is cleverly placed both inside and outside the module.

Overall, the phone feels smooth in hand with no sharp edges.

It comes with an IP54 rating to give basic protection against dust and splashes.

If you’re someone who likes well-thought-out designs in smartphones, this is something you will like.

Infinix Zero 40 5G – Display

Infinix Zero 40 5G – Display
Size 6.78-inch
Screen-to-body Ratio 93.40%

Type LTPS
Material Flexible AMOLED
Peak Brightness 1300nits
Refresh rate 60Hz/ 120Hz/ 144Hz
Touch sampling rate Up to 360Hz @2 fingers

After using the Infinix Zero 40 5G for a while, we must say that the display is definitely one of its highlights.

The AMOLED curved display is really impressive in every sense. It has an almost edge-to-edge design, thanks to that impressive 93.40% screen-to-body ratio. This makes the display feel immersive.

We particularly enjoyed watching content on this phone. It is perfect for binge-watching or even playing games.

The bezels are uniform and much narrower than we expected.

The FHD+ resolution (1080×2436) ensures everything looks sharp. The AMOLED display adds the punch to visuals that are often missing from phones of this price segment.

The colours on display come out rich and vibrant. Every shade of colour pops.

Plus, it comes with a peak brightness of 1300 nits. We had no issues using it even in direct sunlight. Even on a relatively bright day, we didn’t feel the need to crank the brightness all the way up.

Refresh rate options include —60Hz, 120Hz, and a buttery smooth 144Hz. At 144Hz, everything just feels so much more responsive. And the 360Hz touch sampling rate added to the fluid experience.

It all makes the display fast-paced. We tried playing games like BGMI or Genshin Impact on this display and it feels super responsive too.

Overall, we loved how the Infinix Zero 40 5 G display performs in day-to-day use.

Whether we watched movies, played games, or just spent time casually browsing, this display made it look and feel better.

With a powerful MediaTek Dimensity D8200 Ultimate chipset coupled with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, this phone never felt sluggish during our use.

Whether we were multitasking, gaming or just switching between apps, the phone handled everything smoothly.

That octa-core setup brings speed to the phone. The 3.1GHz clock speed on the main core is impressive. And we noticed that even heavier apps opened quickly without any delay.

We could easily jump between multiple apps with no noticeable slowdowns. Even with more demanding tasks like gaming or editing photos, the phone didn’t go through any lags.

The benchmark scores speak for themselves. We tested the phone on multiple benchmarks and the results were impressive including the 831755 AnTuTu score.

The phone handles graphics-intensive games really well.

We tested a few high-end games such as BGMI and Genshin Impact. The games ran smoothly without much noticeable frame drops. We even tried higher settings and it felt smooth. The phone was heating up a bit in higher settings but it remained cool for the most part. Other than heavy games, we didn’t notice any major heating issues during longer sessions.

Front Video Shooting 3840×2160 @ 60 fps

The camera setup on the Infinix Zero 40 5G is a solid 4K Ultra-HD Flagship Camera with AI.

The triple rear camera system is led by a 108MP primary sensor. It is a capable camera and captures sharp and vibrant photos.

The f/1.75 aperture lets in plenty of light, We found that photos taken during the day were crisp. Most photos capture a lot of detail. The time taken in processing images feels a bit much at times and we kept losing the shot we were aiming for because of this delay.

Even in low light or indoor dim lighting conditions, the AI Cam does a great job of balancing exposure. We got some decent shots indoors in low light without too much noise creeping in. The low-light capability of this phone is impressive.

There is also a 50MP ultra-wide camera and it performs well. We have to especially mention the way it maintained good colour accuracy and detail even at wide angles.

We noticed minimal distortion at the edges. The 2MP depth sensor is decent and creates a nice blur in portrait shots. It gives a perfect professional bokeh effect.

When it comes to video, the Infinix Zero 40 5G shoots 4K video at 60fps, and it looks impressive.

We tried taking some street videos and they came out sharp. The colours are vibrant and there are smooth transitions between light and shadow.

The camera has some fun shooting options. It comes with a vlog mode for vlogging.  There is also a dual recording mode that can be used to capture multiple perspectives at the same tim

The camera can also be easily integrated with the Go-Pro.

The front-facing is also impressive with a solid 50MP sensor. Selfies are clear and detailed, The wide-angle lens makes it perfect for group selfies too.

Apple has always been secretive about battery capacities. This makes tech reporters work harder and often compels them to rely on unconventional sources to get the exact numbers of iPhone batteries.

Regulatory agency certifications and teardown videos are usually good ways to gather exact information when it comes to battery capacity.

In a recent development, a Brazilian regulator Anatel is being credited in multiple media reports for finally revealing the actual battery capacities of the iPhone 16 series.

Here’s what we know about the iPhone 16 series batteries now –

  • ‌iPhone 16‌ – 3,561 mAh (up 6.3 per cent)
  • ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus – 4,674 mAh (up 6.6 per cent)
  • iPhone 16 Pro – 3,582 mAh (up 9.4 per cent)
  • ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max – 4,685 mAh (up 6 per cent)

The one reading of these battery capacities reveals that iPhone 16 Pros received the maximum upgrade with 16 Pro at 3,582 mAh being a 9.4 per cent increase and 16 Pro Max at 4,685 being a 6 per cent increase from previous generation models

The new A18 and A18 Pro chips and thermal improvements have also helped Apple with battery life upgrades.

The biggest improvements have been noticed in the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ and Pro Max.

  • iPhone 16 – 22 hours video playback, 18 hours streaming video, 80 hours audio.
  • iPhone 16 Plus – 27 hours of video playback, 24 hours of streaming video, 100 hours of audio.
  • iPhone 16 Pro – 27 hours of video playback, 22 hours of streaming video, 85 hours of audio.
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – 33 hours of video playback, 29 hours of streaming video, 105 hours of audio.
  • iPhone 15 – 20 hours video playback, 16 hours streaming video, 80 hours audio.
  • iPhone 15 Plus – 26 hours of video playback, 20 hours of streaming video, 100 hours of audio.

The iPhone 16 Plus battery doesn’t have a metal casing. This suggests it might be exclusive to the more expensive models this year.

However, it is contradictory to an earlier leak that showed the base iPhone 16 with multiple protection layers on its battery. After that leak, it was believed that this change would be for all models.

The main benefit of the metal casing on the iPhone 16 Pro Max battery is better heat transfer.

Apple might have added this to meet EU regulations for easier battery replacements. However, the metal casing also makes the phone heavier. Since steel is heavier than aluminium, the extra weight might be noticeable even when carrying the iPhone 16 Pro Max daily.

The internal change in the iPhone 16 Pro Max suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro will also have a metal battery case.

Earlier reports showed a prototype with the same material. Hopefully, Apple will make this feature standard for all iPhone 17 models next year.

Model iPhone 15 battery capacity (mAh) iPhone 16 battery capacity (mAh) Percentage difference (%)

Apple Could Debut In-House 5G Chip with iPad and Wi-Fi Chips with iPhone SE in 2025

0

Highlights

  • Apple plans to introduce its custom Wi-Fi chip in at least one iPad by 2025.
  • Its in-house 5G modem in the iPhone SE 4 is also expected in 2025.
  • Apple aims to replace Qualcomm’s chips with its in-house chips entirely by 2027.

Apple has been working on its very own 5G and Wi-Fi chips for years. A recent report now suggests that 2025 could be the year when we finally see the results of Apple’s labour.

According to a new report published in Digitimes, Apple plans to introduce its custom Wi-Fi chip in at least one iPad by 2025. Also, the iPhone SE 4 is also expected to be the first Apple device to feature the Cupertino giant’s in-house 5G modem.

Written by Jay Liu and Eifeh Strom, the Digitimes report is in line with earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo earlier suggested that the iPhone SE 4 and the iPhone 17 Air would be the first devices to include Apple’s new 5G chip.

Now, on Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi chip, the Digitimes report reveals, “Insiders from Apple’s supply chain suggest that the company may introduce its in-house Wi-Fi chip in new iPads in 2025. Alternatively, Apple might choose to debut it in certain iPhone 18 models in 2026.”

As for Apple’s in-house 5G modem, the report specifies, “Apple is poised to equip iPhones with its self-developed 5G modem by 2025. The latest iPhone SE is expected to be the first recipient, potentially arriving as early as the first half of 2025, followed by select models of the iPhone 17 series in the second half of the year.”

In the coming years once Apple’s in-house chips are released, Apple intends to roll out the new modem for its entire lineup. The plan is to eventually phase out Qualcomm’s chips from Apple products.

Certain media reports hint that Apple’s internal plan is to replace Qualcomm’s chips with its in-house chips entirely before 2027 when the agreement with the company ends.

The news that Apple is developing its in-house 5G chip has been circulating for a while now. However, this is probably the first public confirmation about when the in-house chips are expected to be released.

It is important to note that the specific advantages of Apple’s Wi-Fi chips are still unclear. There is a little chance that it could be just about reducing costs.Experts believe that Apple could introduce advanced Continuity features that work more smoothly and efficiently. Moreover, there’s also speculation that Apple plans on reviving its AirPort router line with its own Wi-Fi technology in future.

As of now, we have little confirmation about the potential benefits the in-house chips will bring to Apple’s devices. But as 2025 approaches, we can expect more details to emerge soon.

M4 MacBook Air and Base iPad Display Panels Ship Soon, Early 2025 Release Likely

In a new subscribers-only post on X, display analyst Ross Young reports on two forthcoming Apple products.

He says that display panel shipments for the new M4 MacBook Air and a refreshed 10.9-inch iPad are expected to start in October.

This would comprise both the 13-inch and 15-inch Air models.

Panel shipments indicate that the release might happen a few months ahead of the products going on sale.

This suggests an early 2025 release date for these new devices.

This report aligns with previous expectations for the MacBook Air, which Mark Gurman has said is set for Q1 2024.

Rumors have indicated that Apple would update its full iPad lineup this year.

Back in May, we saw new iPad Pro and iPad Air models.

An iPad mini 7 is expected to debut next month, along with the base-model iPad.

Now it looks like the standard iPad might have to wait a few extra months, or Apple is planning multiple revisions to the iPad—one coming in October and another in the spring as an alternate SKU.

Young has a good track record with display-related reporting.

To say early reviews of the iPhone 16 Pro camera are mixed would be an understatement. While we have one reviewer praising the camera as the best they have seen, the other one calls it “absolutely fake.” Let’s start with the latter since it is making quite a few waves in the online tech community.

YouTuber Claims iPhone 16 Pro 48MP Camera is “Absolutely Fake”

A popular YouTube channel has described the claimed 48 megapixel resolution of the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera as “absolutely fake.”

A popular YouTube channel of professional photographer Tony Northrup described the 48-megapixel resolution of the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera as “absolutely fake.” Northrup claims that the actual resolution could be “around six megapixels.”

Without sugarcoating Northrup in his video titled iPhone 16 Pro camera: DISAPPOINTING & MISLEADING (his caps), said, “First, the 48 megapixel resolution is absolutely fake. It delivers around 6 megapixels of actual detail in ideal circumstances. Second, when you zoom in using the fake 2X zoom lens, the quality becomes absolutely horrible. Apple has given the super-wide angle 13mm lens the same fake 48-megapixel treatment, and you can expect the same lack of actual improved image quality.”

Watch Professional Photographer Tony Northrup’s full review here –

As Northrup’s review started gaining views, reactions emerged from all corners of the tech community.

Sebastiaan de With, the co-founder of Lux – the developer behind Halide and Kino, was quick to respond as he believes the reality is more nuanced.

What’s interesting is that Northrup doesn’t have an iPhone 16 Pro as of now. His analysis comes from the 48MP sensor in the iPhone 15 Pro. He made comparisons between a full-frame DSLR and the output of an iPhone.

However, 9to5Mac in one of its recent reports suggested that while the iPhone does have 48 megapixels, the Quad Bayer arrangement is more complicated than it seems.

According to the 9to5Mac report, the camera system uses colour overlays for each pixel to capture only one colour. The data from four individual pixels (two green, one red, and one blue) is merged into a single photosite. This detail can be used to prove that the ‘true’ resolution of the iPhone camera is actually 12MP and 48MP.

de With while speaking to PetaPixel revealed, “It’s of course never quite useful to compare an iPhone — or any smartphone! — to a full-frame camera, because physics dictates your image output.

You can’t defeat physics when it comes to gathering light and getting a certain kind of rendering. That’s why phones tend to compensate in the area they are far superior in computation.

Computational photography has enabled stuff your full-frame camera can’t even dream of, like 10-second handheld nighttime exposures with a sensor the size of your pinkie toenail or smaller.”

He further notes, “Do users get higher resolution photos with more detail? Undoubtedly. Moving further, can you say that it truly offers four times the detail of the 12-megapixel sensors that precede it?

While it’s a Quad Bayer arrangement that optimizes for 12-megapixel (and now 24-megapixel) output — which makes fantastic sense for 99% of iPhone users’ photos and videos — I would go on a limb and say it is […]

People use [the 48-megapixel iPhone camera] every day and get higher resolution shots with more detail.

Whether it’s the same resolving power as a full-frame camera? Probably not. But that’s comparing an Apple to an orange. Or Sony.”

Austin Mann’s iPhone 16 Pro Camera Review

Travel photographer Austin Mann puts iPhone 16 Pro’s camera to the ultimate test.

Another iPhone 16 Pro camera review came from Travel photographer Austin Mann. He took the iPhone 16 Pro Camera for in-depth tests.

Mann’s extensive test included 10,000 photos and over 3TB of ProRes video with the new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Here’s what Mann had to say, “Once again, the Apple camera team has made steady progress in enhancing the camera experience. The new 48MP Ultra-Wide sensor delivers stunning results, Photographic Styles provides new tools for personalizing images, and Camera Control offers a faster way to access the camera and capture shots.

In the past couple of years, the switch from Lightning to USB-C has been the most significant improvement for projects like ours.

Shooting high-frame-rate ProRes Log directly to an SSD has been a game-changer, and we’ve also enjoyed faster charging, new accessory options, and other pro features.”

Apple’s 2nm Chips Will Be Exclusively for iPhone 18 Pro, Suggests Kuo

0

Highlights

  • Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals Apple chip plans for iPhone 17 and 18.
  • iPhone 17 models expected to feature 3nm chips in 2025
  • iPhone 18 models will potentially use 2nm processors in 2026.

The tech community never stops talking about the next iPhones.

Even when the latest iPhones are still only days old, rumours and speculations about next-in-line iPhones – iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 – have already started capturing tech discourse.

Popular supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a post on X (previously Twitter), revealed some insights on what Apple is planning for smaller process chips.

According to Kuo, all four iPhone 17 models scheduled to be launched in 2025 will feature the 3nm chips.

However, the iPhone 18 for 2026 might get more advanced 2nm processors.

“The processors for 2025 iPhone 17 models will be made by TSMC’s N3P process/3-nanometer technology. The processor for the 2026 iPhone 18 models is anticipated to use TSMC’s 2-nanometer technology. However, due to cost concerns, not all new iPhone 18 models may be equipped with a 2-nanometer processor,” mentions Kuo.

The one thing that can inferred from Kuo’s X post is that Apple might keep 2nm chips strictly for the iPhone 18 Pro models scheduled to be unveiled in 2026.

Apple has traditionally used different standards of processors in standard and Pro iPhone models.

The A18 and A18 Pro processors, however, have a minor difference.

Kuo: iPhone 17 to Use 3nm Chip Tech, iPhone 18 Pro Models to Use 2nm

Both A-series chips are built with a 3nm process. The minor difference between the two is that the A18 Pro in iPhone 16 Pro has a 6-core GPU and the standard A18 chip in iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models have a 5-core variant. Chip binning could be the reason behind this.

Apple’s A18 series chips are built on TSMC’s 2nd-gen 3nm process. (Photo: Apple)

Similar construction is likely to be continued for the A19 chips to be used in next year’s iPhones. And while marketing differentiation will be noticeable, the actual chip will again have minor differences.

However, after next year, things are set for a change if we believe Kuo’s latest indications.

In 2026, Apple is advancing towards even smaller-process 2nm chips. However, the chip would not be used for all models.

Kuo also suggests that it could be because of cost considerations.

With the shrinking chip size manufacturing processes become more intricate. This eventually affects the acceptable yield rates as it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve the minor designs accurately. The number of chips that pass quality control will also shrink. A higher rejection rate at the quality control level only leads to an increase in the cost per chip.

FAQs

Q1. What chip might be used for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 models?

Answer. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 models, scheduled for release in 2025, will feature 3nm chips made using TSMC’s N3P process. The iPhone 18 models, expected in 2026, might use more advanced 2nm processors. However, due to cost concerns, not all iPhone 18 models may be equipped with the 2nm chips.

Q2. Why Apple will limit 2nm chips in the iPhone 18 models only?

Answer. Apple might limit the use of 2nm chips in the iPhone 18 models due to cost considerations. As manufacturing processes shrink, achieving acceptable yield rates becomes more challenging, leading to higher rejection rates and increased costs per chip. Therefore, it is likely that only the iPhone 18 Pro models will feature the 2nm chips.

 “Hype” and “Jewels”

Fans will soon be able to “Hype” new videos from creators with 500 to 500,000 subscribers.

This will give videos a better chance of appearing on country-specific Explore tabs.

“Hype” is an engagement option similar to likes and shares. Videos should be less than a week old to be able to get the Hype Button for fans.

However, “hyping a video” won’t affect YouTube’s recommendations or search results.

This feature is currently in beta testing.

For vertical livestream viewers, YouTube is introducing “Jewels.”

It is a new way to react with the live content. Live content viewers can purchase Jewels to give as Gifts during live streams.

Custom Thumbnails

Google DeepMind’s Veo video generation mode is coming to Dream Screen in YouTube Shorts for backgrounds and standalone clips.

When it comes to thumbnails on YouTube, the platform allows you to select any preferred image as thumbnails for your videos. However, what many users may have missed is how this is not extended for playlists.

Video playlists on YouTube automatically pick the thumbnail from the first video in the lineup.

And the only way to change the auto-selected YouTube video for thumbnails is by moving the first video from the playlist.

It appears YouTube has finally decided to change this one shortcoming and things will change from the next YouTube Update.

image
Only verified users would be able to unlock the custom thumbnail feature. (Image credit – Android Authority)

However, this option isn’t available to everyone right away and only verified users would be able to unlock this upon updating their app.

Once your YouTube App is updated, a pencil icon will appear on the bottom right corner of playlist thumbnails. This will let users access the edit menu.

image
Users can only create a new thumbnail using AI-generated images. (Image Credit – Android Authority)

However, the feature doesn’t let you upload your own image as a thumbnail. You will have to create a new thumbnail using AI-generated images on YouTube based on themes.

This will be similar to the AI-generated album art in YouTube Music.

After choosing a theme, the tool generates sample images from a preconfigured prompt.

Creators have a new “Community Hub” in the YouTube Studio mobile app that replaces the Comments tab. (Image credit -9 to 5 google )

“Communities is a place where you can choose to create that with your fans. This is a place where you and your fans can come together to build even deeper connections over the topics and videos you love, not just posting updates between uploaders or asking for opinions or ideas, but for the first time, subscribers will spark their own discussions with you and with each other,” Bangaly Kaba, director of Product Management at YouTube, during the event.

“While fans and creators can find each other in comments and the Community tab, conversations would often revolve around a creator’s latest video or post. We wanted to build a space where, for the first time ever, subscribers can chat with each other and the creator directly. This introduces a whole new level of interaction on YouTube, and takes some pressure off creators to always make new content to keep their community buzzing,” the company explained in a blog post.

What is the “Hype” feature on YouTube?

The “Hype” feature allows fans to boost new videos from creators with 500 to 500,000 subscribers, giving them a better chance of appearing on country-specific Explore tabs.

Dedicated space: A dedicated spot for conversation and connection, empowering creators to maintain control over their content and brand while fostering meaningful community engagement in a comfortable and inviting space.
Continuous dialog: Conversations transcend individual videos and posts, allowing topics to flow organically and continue over time.
Community-powered: Fans drive the space, creating a sense of belonging where like-minded individuals can connect, learn, and share their passions.”
