Apple and Fortnite-Maker Epic Games Continue Legal Battle Over App Store Practices

Highlights

  • Epic Games challenges Apple’s in-app payment system, bypassing the 30% commission.
  • Court orders Apple to allow external app sales, but the conflict continues.
  • Epic claims Apple’s 27% fee on alternative payments violates court injunction.
  • Supreme Court refuses to hear appeal, prolonging the legal dispute.

The legal tussle between Apple and Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, appears to be far from over, even after the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear appeals from either side.

The dispute originated when Epic Games introduced its own in-app payment system on the iPhone, bypassing the App Store and denying Apple its 30% commission.

This move was a blatant breach of the App Store’s terms and conditions, prompting Apple to remove the company from the App Store.

Apple vs Epic: The Court is Taking No Sides

Consequently, the two companies found themselves embroiled in a legal battle.

While the court ruled that Apple did not operate a monopoly, it ordered the tech giant to allow app sales outside the App Store.

In the latest development, Reuters reports that Apple has denied breaching the court order regarding its App Store practices.

The iPhone maker has urged a federal judge in California to dismiss Epic Games’ request to hold it in contempt.

Apple presented its arguments in a filing to US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, who oversaw Epic’s lawsuit in 2020.

The lawsuit accused Apple of breaching antitrust laws due to its stringent controls over how consumers download apps and make payments within them.

Apple argued that Epic’s request aimed to “micromanage Apple’s business operations in a way that would increase Epic’s profitability.”

Epic, on the other hand, declined to comment on the matter.

Epic Claims Apple’s Blatant Violation

Court orders Apple to allow external app sales, but the conflict continues

Last month, Epic filed a court document claiming that Apple was in “blatant violation” of the court’s injunction.

The video game maker pointed to Apple’s imposition of a 27% fee on developers for some purchases, which Epic claimed made links for alternative payment options “commercially unusable.”

The crux of Epic’s argument is that Apple’s terms prevent developers from offering cheaper app sales on the web since they would still have to pay the company a 27% commission, despite the App Store not being involved in the transaction.

After accounting for around 3% in payment processing costs, developers would essentially be paying the same 30% they pay on App Store sales.

While the US Supreme Court declined to hear Apple’s appeal of the injunction order in January, the ongoing legal battle between the two companies shows no signs of abating.

FAQs

What is the core issue between Apple and Epic Games?

The conflict began when Epic Games introduced an alternative in-app payment system in Fortnite, circumventing the Apple App Store’s 30% fee.

This led to Epic Games’ removal from the App Store and the ensuing legal battle.

What was the court’s decision regarding Apple’s App Store practices?

The court ruled that while Apple was not a monopoly, it must allow developers to direct users to purchasing methods outside of the App Store.

What is Epic Games’ latest legal action against Apple?

Epic Games has requested a federal judge to find Apple in contempt of court, alleging that Apple’s imposition of a 27% fee on certain transactions violates the court’s previous injunction.

How does Apple defend its App Store fees?

Apple argues that the fees are necessary for maintaining the App Store, which provides security, privacy, and a trusted environment for software distribution and transaction processing.

Unboxing the Realme P1 Pro was quite the experience.

Inside the box, I found the sleek device itself, a 45W charger, and the usual documentation.

Holding the Realme P1 Pro, the first thing that strikes you is its elegant, curved display which not only looks modern but feels immersive, especially with its 120Hz refresh rate and high brightness level.

With 6.7-inch OLED panel you can be assured of an immersive visual experience from the get-go.

However, I did notice a bit of blue tinge across the panel when viewed slightly from an angle.

Apart from that the design of the device is inspired by bird culture in Parrot Blue or Phoenix Red is visually striking and feels premium in hand.

Realme P1 Pro: Cameras

The Realme P1 Pro sports a 50MP main camera that promises stunning photos thanks in part to its large size and its optical image stabilization capabilities.

Omitted in the regular P1, the Pro moniker does have an ultra-wide camera while , from my limited time, the selfie camera seemed promising too.

The initial shots I’ve taken are impressive, but I’ll be testing these cameras thoroughly to see how they perform across various lighting and motion scenarios.

Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold Set to Join the Expanded Pixel 9 Lineup

Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold Set to Join the Expanded Pixel 9 Lineup

Highlights

  • Google’s next foldable phone rumoured as “Pixel 9 Pro Fold.”
  • Part of an expanded lineup including Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
  • Expected to feature Google’s Tensor G4 chipset for enhanced performance.
  • Rumoured simultaneous launch with the entire Pixel 9 series in Fall 2024.

Google appears to be aligning its upcoming foldable Android phone with the highly anticipated Pixel 9 lineup, according to a recent report.

The company’s next foldable device is rumoured to be branded as the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold,” a shift in the naming strategy from its predecessor.

Why the Pixel 9 Pro Fold?

Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold Set to Join the Expanded Pixel 9 Lineup
Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold Set to Join the Expanded Pixel 9 Lineup

When Google launched its first Pixel Fold, it arrived during the gap between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series launches.

However, information from Google leaker Kamila Wojciechowska suggests that the next foldable may be marketed as the “Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.”

If the information we’ve seen about the Pixel 9 family of phones is accurate, this would bring the total number of devices in the series to four: the base Pixel 9, a smaller Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and now the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Rumours indicate that the new foldable is built around Google’s upcoming Tensor G4 chipset, which will also power the rest of the Pixel 9 series.

In that sense, the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” naming convention makes sense, as the second-generation Fold is expected to have similar internals and camera performance as the other Pixel 9 devices.

A Departure from Google’s Naming Convention

Google's next foldable phone rumoured as "Pixel 9 Pro Fold."
Google’s next foldable phone rumoured as “Pixel 9 Pro Fold.”

This naming strategy marks a significant shift from Google’s initial approach with its foldable line.

Previously dubbed “Pixel Fold 2” during its development phase, the renaming to “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” aligns it more closely with its sibling devices, though this name may still change as the product nears completion.

Launching the Pixel 9 Pro Fold alongside the other Pixel 9 models in the fall of 2024 would differentiate Google from competitors, who usually release their foldable models at different times from their main series.

A simultaneous launch of all four devices under the Pixel 9 umbrella is likely to generate significant interest.

However, these are all just rumours for the time being and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Highlights

  • Over 20 retail chains to stop selling OnePlus products from May 1.
  • Issues with warranty claims and low profit margins cited as key reasons.
  • OnePlus to remain available on major online platforms like Amazon India and Flipkart.
  • The move could significantly impact OnePlus’s market presence in India.

Starting from May 1st, a significant change will impact OnePlus’s distribution in India, as over 20 retail chains, encompassing around 4,300 stores, will cease selling OnePlus devices.

This development, as reported by Android Headlines, arises from a variety of challenges highlighted by the South Indian Organized Retailers Association (ORA).

OnePlus Sales Reportedly Halt in Over 4300 Stores Across South India

The decision to discontinue sales of OnePlus products in these stores marks a major shift in the smartphone manufacturer’s presence in one of its largest markets.

The ORA has expressed dissatisfaction with OnePlus’s business practices, a sentiment that is shared by the broader All India Mobile Retailer Association (AIMRA).

The issues leading to this decision include critical problems with warranty claims.

Retailers and consumers have reportedly faced significant delays when dealing with service and warranty issues, which has strained relationships and tarnished the user experience.

Additionally, the profit margins on OnePlus products have been consistently low, making it difficult for retailers to justify continuing their sales compared to other brands that offer more sustainable returns.

OnePlus to remain available on major online platforms like Amazon India and Flipkart

The ramifications of this move are considerable.

Although OnePlus devices will remain available on online platforms such as Amazon India and Flipkart, the absence from a vast network of offline stores could severely limit the brand’s market penetration and consumer reach in India.

This development underscores the broader challenges that tech companies face in managing relationships with retail partners and maintaining service quality that meets consumer and retailer expectations.

For OnePlus, addressing these issues is crucial to maintaining its market position and trust within the Indian market.

FAQs

Why are over 4300 stores stopping the sale of OnePlus devices?

Starting May 1, numerous retailers across South India will cease selling OnePlus devices due to ongoing issues with warranty claims and unprofitable margins.

These challenges have been outlined by the South Indian Organized Retailers Association (ORA) and are supported by concerns from the All India Mobile Retailer Association (AIMRA).

What specific issues have led to the discontinuation of OnePlus sales in these stores?

Retailers have faced significant challenges with OnePlus, particularly with delayed responses to warranty and service claims that have adversely affected the consumer experience.

Additionally, the profit margins from selling OnePlus products have been unsustainably low, prompting retailers to reconsider their sales strategy.

Will OnePlus still be available for purchase in India?

Despite the withdrawal from a large number of brick-and-mortar stores, OnePlus devices will continue to be available for purchase through online platforms, including Amazon India and Flipkart, ensuring that customers can still access these products.

What are the broader implications of this sales halt for OnePlus in India?

The cessation of OnePlus sales in these offline outlets could drastically reduce the brand’s physical market footprint in India, potentially limiting consumer exposure and affecting overall sales performance in one of its biggest markets.
