Google is working on a new feature called “Shielded Email” to help users protect their personal email addresses.

This privacy-focused tool was spotted in the code for Google Play Services by Android Authority earlier this week.

The Shielded Email would let users generate unique, random email addresses that are forwarded to their personal inbox, basically allowing users to create email aliases.

Emails sent to these aliases would be forwarded to the user’s primary email account. If unwanted spam becomes an issue, users could “turn off forwarding at any time” through their Google Account settings. It’s likely these settings will be accessible via myaccount.google.com or its Android counterpart.

It is described in beta version 24.45.33 of Google Play Services as a way to “Keep your email address private with Shielded Email.”

The feature is expected to help users avoid online tracking and minimise risks from data breaches. Users may be able to generate Shielded Emails when signing up for new accounts in Android apps or on the web.

Shielded Email will likely integrate with Android’s autofill functionality and Google Password Manager, making it seamless to use when filling out forms or creating new accounts.

<string name=”autofill_shielded_ids_email_dialog_upper_message_new_user”>Use an email address created for this app. This can protect you from online tracking and data breaches.</string>

The feature is not yet functional even though it was visible in the Autofill settings menu, which could mean a wider release is on cards soon.

It’s unclear whether Google will offer Shielded Email for free or include it as part of its paid Google One subscription. Charging for the feature could both encourage Google One sign-ups and prevent misuse of the service.

Apple also offers a similar Hide My Email feature for iCloud+ users. Available since 2021, Apple’s Hide My Email starts at $0.99 per month and protects users’ privacy by keeping their actual email addresses hidden.

NordPass Reveals Most Common Password in India and How Easy To Crack It

0

Highlights

  • The most used password globally and in India is ‘123456’.
  • Easy-to-guess passwords like ‘123456789, ‘qwerty’, and ‘password are also popular.
  • 78% of the world’s most common passwords can be cracked in less than a second.

Weak passwords are a common problem. There is a science to setting a strong password for online accounts but most internet users have never paid attention to it.

At least that’s what these password surveys tell us repeatedly.

A recent NordPass study has again highlighted the alarming trends of setting easily crackable passwords globally.

NordPass has unveiled its sixth annual Top 200 Most Common Passwords report revealing some startling patterns in how people choose their passwords worldwide including in India.

Here’s a detailed roundup of the report.

The most-used password globally and in India is the predictable “123456.”

Of the 3,018,050 people worldwide who opted for this insecure password, 76,981 are from India. The second most-used password globally, “123456789,” ranks fourth in India.

The study conducted with NordStellar highlights that nearly half of the world’s most common passwords consist of easy-to-guess combinations, such as “qwerty,” “1q2w3e4er5t,” and “123456789.” These patterns are just as prevalent in India.

A previous NordPass study found that the average internet user manages 168 personal account passwords and 87 work accounts.

With such a high volume, people often fall back on simple passwords, which are easy to remember but even easier to crack.

Security experts consistently warn against using passwords like “qwerty123,” a common favourite password in countries such as the Netherlands, Canada, Finland and Lithuania. Now this password has also entered the top 10 list in India.

Another popular yet insecure choice is the word “password” itself.

This classic has long featured on global password lists and is now the second most-used password in India. It also tops the list in Australia and the UK.

In India, some cultural personalisation adds variety to weak passwords such as “Indya123” instead of “India123.” Other common options include “admin” and “abcd1234.”

The report highlights an alarming statistic that 78% of the world’s most common passwords can be cracked in less than a second up from 70% last year.

The study found that nearly 40% of commonly used passwords overlap between personal and business accounts. Many employees continue using default passwords like “admin,” “temppass,” “newuser,” or “welcome,” set during account creation.

Moreover, many people reuse the same password for both personal and work accounts, which makes it easier for hackers to infiltrate sensitive systems.

List of 20 Most Common Passwords Used in India

Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Seeking Ban on WhatsApp in India Over Privacy Concerns

WhatsApp is a popular app today but it has often come under fire for privacy concerns. The matter this week made headlines as it came up in the apex court.

The Supreme Court has rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on WhatsApp if it does not comply with Indian regulatory guidelines.

The division bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Aravind Kumar declined to hear the plea filed in Kerala.

Omanakuttan KG is a software engineer from Kerala and has filed a PIL arguing that WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy violates users’ rights to privacy.

Omanakuttan’s petition alleged that WhatsApp’s policy collects sensitive user data, such as battery information, in violation of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

He further argued that this undermines user privacy guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The plea highlighted how WhatsApp adheres to stricter privacy norms in Europe but resists similar compliance in India.

The PIL was previously dismissed in the Kerala High Court in June 2021 as ‘premature.’ It later resurfaced in the Supreme Court raising broader concerns about national security and misinformation.

The petitioner also questioned WhatsApp’s refusal to trace message origins due to end-to-end encryption and criticized its reliability for serving legal notices.

However, the Supreme Court rejected the plea without further hearings emphasising the complexities surrounding digital privacy regulations and WhatsApp’s compliance with the Indian legal framework.

“If the app was not willing to change its technology and did not cooperate with the government, it should not be allowed to operate in the country.

The Centre had banned many websites and mobile apps for acting against the interest of the country,” the plea said.

The IT Rules introduced in 2021 made it mandatory for social media platforms including WhatsApp, X (then Twitter) and Facebook to maintain proper records of users and posts.

FAQs

Q1. What was the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the plea to ban WhatsApp?

Answer. The Supreme Court dismissed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to ban WhatsApp in India over privacy concerns.

Q2. What were the main privacy concerns raised in the PIL against WhatsApp?

Answer. The PIL argued that WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy violates user privacy and the Information Technology Rules, 2021, and highlighted discrepancies between its compliance in Europe and India.

Q3. Why was the PIL seeking WhatsApp ban dismissed by the Kerala High Court?

Answer. The PIL was previously dismissed by the Kerala High Court in June 2021 as ‘premature,’ but it later resurfaced in the Supreme Court raising broader concerns about national security and misinformation.

  • The Indian smartphone market grew 5.6% YoY in Q3 2024.

  • Apple’s iPhone exports from India reached Rs 60,000 crore in seven months.

Experts believe the Indian smartphone market growth in Q3 2024 is driven by attractive discounts, multiple financing options, extended warranty and bank offers in both online/offline channels. (Image credit – Reuters)

India’s smartphone market continued its growth streak for the fifth consecutive quarter according to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

In Q3 2024, total smartphone shipments reached 46 million units recording a 5.6% year-over-year increase.

While Vivo and Oppo maintained their top position in market share, Apple achieved the milestone of hitting its highest-ever quarterly shipment in India at 4 million units.

Highlighting the factors working in favour of the Indian smartphone industry, Senior Research Manager Devices Research at IDC Asia Pacific, Upasana Joshi said, “Growth in the biggest quarter of the year was fueled by attractive discounts, multiple financing options, extended device warranty and cashback/bank offers across both online/offline channels. The launch of several new 5G smartphones also drove demand. One of the biggest draws during the eTailer sales was the attractive discounts on last year’s flagship models from Apple and Samsung.”

Vivo took the lead with a 15.8% market share and a 20% growth over Q3 2023, followed by Oppo, which saw impressive growth of 47.6%, capturing a 13.9% share.

Meanwhile, Samsung slipped to third place, holding 12.3% of the market with a notable 19.7% decline. OnePlus experienced the largest drop, with a 39.3% decrease, placing it in tenth.

Realme came in fourth with an 11.5% share, showing a similar decline to Samsung, while Xiaomi’s share remained steady at 11.4% with a small 2.7% increase.

Apple, however, surged 58.5%, capturing an 8.6% market share with record-breaking shipments.

Motorola and iQOO also saw impressive growth, with Motorola growing 149.5% and iQOO by 101.4%, giving them market shares of 5.7% and 4.2%, respectively.

Sharing insights on the potential of Q4, AVP Devices Research IDC Navkendar Singh said, “Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24. Thus, India’s smartphone market is expected to exit 2024 with a low single-digit annual growth. For the market to see high growth in 2025, it needs strong momentum in mass and entry-premium segments (US$100<US$400). We should also expect more affordable offerings and high decibel marketing around Gen AI features on smartphones in 2025.”

The growth supported by the GoI’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme is set to drive Apple’s export record even higher.

Meanwhile, the ongoing production of the iPhone 16 series alongside older models like the iPhone 15 and 14 are going to be at the centre of future numbers.

Snapchat is rolling out enhanced location-tracking features specifically for families. This feature will allow parents to keep a tab on their children’s Snap Map settings and locations.

As per media reports, these new features are expected to be available for wider users in the coming weeks and will be part of Snapchat’s Family Center parental control hub.

Parents can now request access to view their child’s location or share their own with these updates.

They can also set up “travel notifications” to receive alerts when their child leaves specific places like school or home.

Snapchat shared details of the feature in a blog post, saying, “We’re adding travel notifications to Family Center to give parents more peace of mind knowing their teen has arrived at class, left sports practice on time, or even returned home after a night with friends.”

Currently, the Snapchat Family Center already allows parents to monitor who their kids are chatting with.

With this latest update, parents will also be able to see who their teen has shared their location with on Snap Map.

A recent The Verge report revealed that this location-tracking feature will be released along with the other location features.

The Verge report mentions, “Once you have the update, you’ll see an option in the Family Center that lets parents request their teen’s locations, and vice versa. The hub will also allow parents to view their child’s location-sharing settings alongside existing privacy settings to ensure they’re using the app safely and responsibly.”

Snapchat Adds New Safety Features, Including Live Location Requests

The report adds, “If that’s not enough, Snap is allowing family members to send automatic travel notifications, which will ping them when you’ve arrived to or left from three designated locations, such as home or school.”

These new features are being introduced amid rising safety concerns over Snapchat’s location-sharing features.

Recently, Snapchat has been under fire for allegedly allowing teens to interact with strangers, including criminals.

A lawsuit filed by New Mexico’s Attorney General earlier this year highlighted these safety concerns.

WhatsApp Group chats are fun but sometimes you have to mute them in order to avoid the constant notifications.

But have you ever wondered how muting your family group chats impact your notifications? Or did you ever want to have more control over how you receive notifications from muted group chats? Well, to make it all more convenient and simplified, WhatsApp is testing some changes in Beta that may soon be available to everyone.

In an earlier report on WhatsApp beta for Android, it was revealed that WhatsApp is testing a new feature to make group notifications clearer and customisable.

This feature aims to clarify how muting group chats affects notifications and gives users more control over what alerts they receive.

Now according to a more recent update shared by Wabetainfo, some beta testers are already getting this new notification activity feature.

The screenshot shared by Wabetainfo shows users can now decide if they want notifications for all messages in a group or only for key interactions labelled “Highlights.” The group chat ‘Highlights’ would include mentions, replies and other direct engagements.

This update helps users focus on relevant notifications in large, busy groups without being overwhelmed by every message.

Moreover, the new feature also clarifies that even when a group is muted, certain interactions like mentions or direct replies may still trigger notifications.

This prevents confusion around what “muting” truly means. In the current system, many users assume muting would silence all alerts.

However, WhatsApp is making it clear which notifications will still come through with this update.

Wabetainfo also notes that WhatsApp’s default notification settings for group chats are now influenced by group size.

This means large groups default to ‘Highlights’ notifications only and spare users from a flood of alerts.

Meanwhile, smaller groups continue to notify for all messages unless changed by the user.

The latest beta update (2.24.24.10) is currently available on the Google Play Store.

This update is rolling out to more beta testers and will expand to a broader audience over the coming weeks.

Answer. Open the Group Chat: Tap on the group chat you want to mute.
