Google’s Bioacoustic AI ‘HeAR’ is Here To Help Detect Early Signs of Disease

Google’s Bioacoustic AI 'HeAR'

Highlight

  • Google has developed an AI model called HeAR (Health Acoustic Representations).
  • HeAR can analyze body sounds like coughs and breaths to detect conditions like tuberculosis (TB).
  • The model was trained on 300 million audio samples.
  • Google has partnered with India’s Salcit Technologies to enhance early detection of TB using the HeAR model.

Today, it is almost customary to do a Google search every time there is a health issue for you or anyone even in your distant family.

Google has become our go-to health adviser.

We get to know about health issues, symptoms, possible causes and treatments as well from the search engine.

And now it appears the concept of Google as our health adviser is getting a serious upgrade with artificial intelligence coming into the forefront.

While taking health advice from Google is often considered inappropriate or quack, Google itself is now working on an AI model that will help detect any signs of diseases.

It is a bioacoustic foundation model that may help improve health outcomes for people across India.

Google has announced the AI model is named “HeAR,” an acronym for Health Acoustic Representations, in one of its recent blogs.

While announcing the new development, Google outlines the importance of sound and speech in diagnosis.

Our bodies make different sounds from cough to speech and even breath that can help detect maltitude of information about our health condition.

As per Google, one of the conditions that can be detected with the help of body sounds is tuberculosis (TB) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“Earlier this year, we introduced Health Acoustic Representations, or HeAR, a bioacoustic foundation model designed to help researchers build models that can listen to human sounds and flag early signs of disease. The Google Research team trained HeAR on 300 million pieces of audio data curated from a diverse and de-identified dataset, and we trained the cough model, in particular, using roughly 100 million cough sounds,” Google mentioned in the blog,

To bring this vision closer to reality, Google has partnered with India’s Salcit Technologies, a respiratory healthcare company known for its AI bioacoustic model called Swaasa.

Swaasa uses the sound of a patient’s cough to assess lung health and is currently being refined to improve the early detection of tuberculosis.

However, convincing doctors to trust and adopt technology like HeAR for diagnosis could be challenging.

Yet, having the backing of reputable organizations, such as the United Nations StopTB Partnership, lends credibility to HeAR’s potential.

In the near future, you might find yourself being diagnosed and treated by Google, all through the power of your smartphone.

“Solutions like HeAR will enable AI-powered acoustic analysis to break new ground in tuberculosis screening and detection, offering a potentially low-impact, accessible tool to those who need it most,” said Zhi Zhen Qin, digital health specialist with the Stop TB Partnership.

“Every missed case of tuberculosis is a tragedy; every late diagnosis, a heartbreak,” says Sujay Kakarmath, a product manager at Google Research working on HeAR. “Acoustic biomarkers offer the potential to rewrite this narrative. I am deeply grateful for the role HeAR can play in this transformative journey.” We’re also seeing support for this approach from organizations including The StopTB Partnership, a United Nations-hosted organization that brings together TB experts and affected communities with the goal of ending TB by 2030.

FAQs

Q1. What is Google’s new AI model HeAR designed to do?

Answer. Google’s AI model HeAR (Health Acoustic Representations) is designed to detect signs of diseases using bioacoustic data, such as sounds from coughs and breaths.

Q2. What health conditions can HeAR help detect?

Answer. HeAR can help detect conditions like tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by analyzing body sounds.

Q3. How was the HeAR model trained?

Answer. The HeAR model was trained on 300 million audio samples, including 100 million cough sounds, to identify health-related patterns.

Apple Layoffs 100 Employees Amid Reports of Non-Contributing Senior Staff Retention

Apple Layoffs 100 Employees Amid Reports of Non-Contributing Senior Staff Retention

Highlights

  • Apple has conducted four rounds of layoffs in the past eight months.
  • The company recently laid off 100 employees from its services division in Apple Books and Apple News.
  • Despite the layoffs, the company continues to retain senior employees to maintain shareholder confidence.

Reports of layoffs and downsizing are common in today’s economy.

We often hear stories of tech giants laying off hundreds and thousands of employees in one quarter.

Almost every big tech firm has been in the headlines in the past for such stories, be it Microsoft, Google or Meta.

This year, however, Apple is leading this front.

The company in the past eight months have had four rounds of job cuts.

While the number on paper might not be as big as some other layoff figures we have heard, for a company like Apple that has maintained a long tradition of retentions, this is huge.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has recently laid off around 100 employees from its services division.

The layoffs mainly affected teams from Apple Books and Apple News.

Gurman mentions, “This past Tuesday, Apple told employees in its services division that it’s eliminating about 100 jobs, including engineering roles and software testing positions.”

However, what grabs attention is that despite these cuts, CEO Tim Cook has continued a longstanding practice of retaining senior employees.

Apple often retains senior staff on the payroll even when they contribute little to daily operations.

The strategy admittedly is aimed at maintaining shareholder confidence.

Apple has conducted four rounds of layoffs in the past eight months.

The practice of keeping senior staff on payroll began after Steve Jobs’ passing.

Later Cook persuaded key figures like Bob Mansfield and Jony Ive to stay with the company, even after they let go of key roles.

The most recent example is CFO Luca Maestri.

While Maestri is stepping down from his position in 2025, he will remain at Apple to provide counsel.

Previously this year, Apple laid off the people working on the Apple Car project, the micro-LED project and the employees who refused to relocate.

Apple also had to let go of its retail employees earlier this year.

These layoffs are seen as a shift in Apple’s priorities, with the company focusing on new ventures like XR (Extended Reality) with Apple Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence.

However, the contrast between retaining underutilised senior employees just to keep shareholder confidence while laying off productive staff has raised concerns about the company’s strategy.

FAQs

Q1. How many layoffs has Apple conducted in 2024?

Answer. Apple has conducted four rounds of layoffs in the eight months of 2024 so far.

The most recent layoffs affected around 100 employees from its services division, including teams from Apple Books and Apple News.

Q2. Who is replacing Apple CFO Luca Maestri?

Answer.  Apple has named Kevan Parekh,  currently VP of Financial Planning and Analysis, as the replacement of CFO Luca Maestri.

Q3. Why does Apple retain senior staff after they resign?

Answer. Apple retains senior staff to maintain shareholder confidence, a practice that started after Steve Jobs’ passing.

Despite this, the contrast between retaining underutilized senior employees and laying off productive staff has raised concerns about the company’s strategy.

US Federal Court Blocks Law That Would Limit Teens’ Access to Social Media

US Federal Court Blocks Law That Would Limit Teens' Access to Social Media

  • A federal judge blocks parts of the Texas SCOPE Act.
  • The law aims to increase social media monitoring and filtering to protect teenagers.
  • The judge ruled that these requirements threatened free speech and issued an injunction.
  • However, some provisions like age verification for adult content remain in effect.

The discourse around social media censorship or internet censorship has reached the highest of courts in different countries.

As of now, we have seen rulings in such cases mostly against big tech companies.

However, a recent federal order on a Texus law has put the question of social media censorship into a different perspective.

The federal judge has put a last-minute partial block on a Texus Act, which demanded that social media companies strengthen their “monitoring and filtering” of the platform in order to limit its access for teenagers.

A federal court ruling clarified in its order that social media companies cannot be forced to block certain content from teenagers under a new Texas law.

The court viewed the Texus Act as an infringement of free speech.

The law, known as the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act, was set to take effect on September 1st.

The law requires a range of web services particularly big social media platforms to verify users’ ages and restrict data collection from minors.

It also demanded that social media companies block harmful content like substance abuse and grooming.

However, Judge Robert Pitman ruled that these requirements threaten free speech and issued an injunction against them while the case continues.

The order didn’t block the entire law as some provisions, which include the age verification for adult content will continue to remain in effect.

The ruling came after tech industry groups NetChoice, the CCIA, and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) challenged the law.

The group argued that such a law could lead to selective enforcement and vague restrictions.

“Terms like ‘promoting,’ ‘glorifying,’ ‘substance abuse,’ ‘harassment,’ and ‘grooming’ are undefined, despite their potential wide breadth and politically charged nature.

At what point, for example, does alcohol use become ‘substance abuse?’

When does an extreme diet cross the line into an ‘eating disorder?”

Judge Robert Pitman noted in his ruling.

Judge Pitman highlighted concerns about the potential for censorship, noting that controversial content might be removed from social media while remaining accessible on other platforms.

The case is ongoing and further rulings could impact the law’s future enforcement.

FAQs

Q1. What is the Texas SCOPE Act?

Answer. The Texas SCOPE Act, or Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment Act, aimed to increase social media monitoring and filtering to protect teenagers.

It required social media platforms to verify users’ ages, restrict data collection from minors, and block harmful content like substance abuse and grooming.

Q2. What’s the court order against the Texas SCOPE Act?

Answer. A federal judge, Robert Pitman, partially blocked SCOPE the Act, citing that these requirements threaten free speech.

The judge issued an injunction against these provisions while the case continues, although some parts of the law, such as age verification for adult content, remain in effect.

Q3. Who challenged the Texus SCOPE Act?

Answer. Tech industry groups, including NetChoice, the CCIA, and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) have challenged the Texas SCOPE Act in court.

Highlights

  • The iPhone SE 4 might be coming earlier than expected.
  • Low stock reports of the current model spark rumours.
  • iPhone SE 4 is expected to have a design similar to the iPhone 14, with features like Face ID, 8GB RAM, 6-inch OLED and possibly a 48MP camera.
  • It will most likely include new AI features, the A18 Chip and an Apple-made 5G modem.
  • It is rumoured to be priced around $500 (approximately INR 50,000).

Currently, we have the iPhone SE 3 in stores, which was launched in 2022.

Previously, rumours suggested that an upgrade to iPhone SE 3 wasn’t on the cards until mid-2025.

However, recent developments suggest Apple has other plans and we may get to see the iPhone SE 4 launch earlier than expected.

According to a recent Bloomberg hint in the Apple reporter Mark Gurman’s newsletter, Apple stores are reportedly facing a shortage of several key products.

This includes accessories such as the FineWoven faux leather cases, various Apple Watch models and bands, AirPods, iPad mini, and even some iPhone models.

iPhone SE 4 expected to adopt modern all-screen design
iPhone SE 4 is expected to have a design similar to the iPhone 14, with features like Face ID, 8GB RAM, 6-inch OLED and possibly a 48MP camera.

The storage of these key products shouldn’t be a surprise because Apple’s mega iPhone event “It’s Glowtime” is just a few days away.

Scheduled for September 9, Apple’s event will be unveiling upgrades to most of the key products.

As per reports, we are getting the new iPhone 16 Series, Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch SE 3, Two fourth-generation AirPods, M4 Macs Upgrades, iPad Mini 7 and 11th Generation iPad.

However, what’s notable in this list of products that are facing a shortage is the iPhone SE.

Rumoured to feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with Face ID
The iPhone SE 4 might be coming earlier than expected.

The budget-friendly iPhone, as per reports, is also experiencing low stock levels.

This should not be the case because an upgrade to this was not being anticipated until next year.

The report speculates that the low inventory of FineWoven cases could indicate that Apple is either planning to discontinue this material or refresh the lineup with new colours.

So, given that other products mentioned are likely to be updated soon, there’s a possibility that the iPhone SE could be unveiled sooner than we all expected.

Bloomberg report indicates that the new A18 chips and Apple’s focus on Apple Intelligence innovations could be the reason for the early launch of the iPhone SE 4.

In case the recent speculations about the early launch of the iPhone SE 4 have any truth, Apple fans will be getting a budget-conscious option to access the new AI features earlier than expected.

Upcoming iPhone SE 4 – Biggest Rumours You Should Know About

Apple continues to increase the price of the regular iPhones, the budget-friendly iPhone SE series

  • The upcoming SE 4 could get an 8GB RAM
  • The phone could get an upgrade from Touch ID to Face ID as the device locking feature.
  • Could feature a 06-inch OLED display.
  • While some rumours suggest we will most likely have a single rear camera system similar to the current iPhone SE 3, certain sources claim a 48MP camera with iPhone 15-like imaging capabilities could be on the cards for the upcoming iPhone SE 4.
  • It is expected to get a different notch design, suspected to be Dynamic Island.
  • iPhone SE 4 could also get the Action Button, USB-C type charge support, and Apple-made 5G modem.
  • The price is rumoured to be around $500 (approximately INR 50,000).

iPhone SE 4 could also get the Action Button, USB-C type charge support, and Apple-made 5G modem.

Apple is all set to unveil its new iPhones, watches, and AirPods during the upcoming September 9 event.

While the mega Apple event is still almost a week away, it appears the company is deliberately running low on various current products in its retail outlets.

In the latest PowerOn newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has revealed that inventory of many Apple products is low at retail stores.

The low inventory is often a sign that the brand is either planning to release upgrades to the current line-up or completely phase out certain products.

With the Apple event only about a week away, we can safely assume that it is the former in case of Apple’s dwindling inventory issue.

As per Gurman’s report, stock of iPhone FineWoven faux leather cases and Apple Watch bands is at all-time lows.

Inventory is also low for numerous iPhone models, which includes the low-budget SE.

The Apple Watch models, AirPods and the iPad mini are low on shelves indicating an upcoming upgrade.

Moreover, low inventory is also reported for the smallest iPad, which suggests that a new model may be coming soon.

5 Chilling Cybersecurity Threats You Need to Know in 2024

Cybersecurity Threats

As technology advances, the potential for cybersecurity threats grows exponentially. These incidents are not only becoming more sophisticated but also pose a significant threat to human life. Cybercrime is on the rise, and according to a report, it is expected to cost the world more than $24 trillion by 2027.

How to Deal With Them

Technological advancements have made it easier for organizations to tackle cybersecurity threats. You can ensure that all sensitive data is encrypted. Data encryption limits data access to parties that have the encryption key. Staying up-to-date with the latest security threats and vulnerabilities and using unique, complex passwords for all accounts are crucial.

Phishing

Phishing is a common cybersecurity threat that we encounter regularly. Criminals send messages via email, text, or social media, pretending to be a reputable source. This tactic tricks individuals into revealing sensitive information such as bank account details, passwords, and social security numbers.

Ransomware

Ransomware involves encrypting the victim’s data and demanding payment for decryption keys. This malicious software threatens to publish or block access to a victim’s personal data or system until a ransom is paid.

The Dark Web

The Dark Web is a significant threat to global cybersecurity. Known for its high level of anonymity, it is equipped with several encryption technologies and specialized browsers. Recent dark web activities have led to an increase in data theft and leaks. This hidden part of the internet is not accessible through traditional search engines like Google.

AI-Powered Threats

Artificial Intelligence has become integral within organizations. Unfortunately, these threats now utilize AI to inflict damage on networks, computer systems, and data. Deepfake-powered threats, for example, use AI and machine learning techniques to create highly realistic but false audio, video, or image content.

Remote Work Attacks

Since COVID-19, remote work has become more common, increasing the risk of cyberattacks targeting individuals or organizations with remote work setups. These attacks exploit the vulnerabilities of working outside the secure office environment.
