We are overwhelmed to have flourished faster than we had anticipated: ZinQ Founder

0

ZinQ Technologies, an Amazon-exclusive brand, has made a name for itself in lifestyle gadgets and accessories in a very short span of time. Incepted in 2019, ZinQ is a brainchild of Quantum Hitech Merchandising, one of the leading and widely acknowledged computer and gaming peripherals, sound systems and surveillance solutions brand. It claims to sell over 75,000 units per month with 2,500 units sold every day. The company has established a customer base of over 10 lakh and is targeting to scale up the figures to 5 lakh new customers a month by the end of 2021. Arnav Mutneja, Founder, ZinQ Technologies, shares with Ramesh Kumar Raja the brand’s vision and strategy to strengthen its foothold in India furthermore and then enter the Middle East and Europe in the near future. Excerpts:

ZinQ is a relatively new player in the digital accessories segment. How are you positioning it in India which already is a hyper-competitive market having innumerable brands at different price points?

Our hypothesis was to listen to the consumer and to address their needs. By paying heed to millions of customers’ reviews online, we are able to learn what other brands did not want to learn. That has helped us to get insights into what consumers actually want and what features they are willing to sacrifice for ease of use. Hence, the products that we come up with are born out of a very minimal yet functional approach. They are designed to make one’s daily life easy and stress-free.

We had an enthralling journey in lifestyle gadgets and accessories launched in the past year. Considering that India is a price-sensitive market, our products strike a perfect balance between features and performance.

You have a very limited number of product categories to offer. How has been the response so far and what’s your expansion plan to make ZinQ large?

All of our sales are coming from one of India’s leading e-commerce channels, Amazon.in. We sell over 75,000 units per month with 2,500 units sold every day. We have established a customer base of over 10 lakh and are targeting to scale up the figures to 5 lakh new customers a month by the end of 2021.

In terms of business, we are eyeing to clock revenue of around 40 crore in the next year. Having completed a year of selling consumer electronic goods, we have clocked INR 15 Cr revenue in FY 20-21 in domestic sales alone. The industry we are focusing on now is consumer audio space. We are planning to launch a series of Bluetooth speakers, neckbands, headphones and true wireless earbuds. We are also planning to embark on the smart home appliances and lighting category in the immediate future.

As a startup, we are overwhelmed to have flourished faster than we had anticipated. We want to strengthen our foothold in India furthermore and then enter the Middle East and Europe by 2021.

ZinQ-products

ZinQ is an Amazon-exclusive brand. Do you have any plans to onboard another platform?

We have no plans to sell through any other channels. It is a symbiotic relationship we share with Amazon and we plan to continue it.

How has the business been so far, especially in the wake of pandemic when living digital life has become a new norm from kids to adults?

The current year has been very grueling for everyone. After completing a year since our inception, the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic happened. Logistics was badly hit and supply chains were disrupted. Exorbitant sums of money got blocked by vendors, inventory in transit, etc. Timing is very essential for any business to succeed, and for us, right when we were scaling up and investing heavily, we had to come to a complete halt, that too a knee jerk. Travel restrictions around these times have become huge hurdles. Product development from other countries over video calls is extremely difficult and time-consuming. Global shortages in IT products have also resulted in global suppliers focusing on higher-paying US and European markets rather than India. Overall, we have been lucky to have sustained the worst and now with supply in the process of rectification, we stand a chance to grow exponentially.

“After completing a year since our inception, the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic happened. Logistics was badly hit and supply chains were disrupted. Exorbitant sums of money got blocked by vendors, inventory in transit, etc. Timing is very essential for any business to succeed, and for us, right when we were scaling up and investing heavily, we had to come to a complete halt, that too a knee jerk”

Which are the areas you are targeting and whom do you consider your potential buyers?

The brand is crafted for youth and tech savvy audiences committed to deliver the best-in-class experience to its customers.

What is your approach to the “after sales service” which remains an issue for the majority of electronics companies?

After sales support is the backbone of any brand. We have strategic tie up with service providers which give our consumers over 600 touch points spread all over the county. We strive to provide a hassle-free service experience to the consumer.

What do you do to increase the recall value of your brand?

We believe that in the long run, nothing speaks for a brand more than its loyal customer base. We believe in a no-compromise approach to quality and make products that last a lifetime. It is a legacy we want to create of a homegrown household electronics accessories brand with unmatched quality.

There is a parallel grey market in India thriving on counterfeit accessories and devices. How will you deal with them?

Fortunately, being exclusive to Amazon, we do not face competition from the grey market and we carefully come up with products that do not have easily available alternatives in the grey market.

What are your outreach and investment plans?

We have invested Rs 5-6 crores till now. We have gained access to capital investment through our parent company Quantum Hi-Tech Merchandising. In order to grow further, we do not see funding as an issue. We are looking at investors from a strategic point of view more than monetary.

Please tell us something about R&D and innovation at ZinQ?

We have a dedicated department for design where we make sure that every product is designed internally to the optimal performance levels. We outsource certain parts of the manufacturing process but make sure that our products and key designs remain our property. Right now, we have over 35 products under development by our R&D team and more than 15 are nearing production.

Nokia C20 Plus Review: A decent entry-level phone with some hits and misses

0

Nokia is back with another budget smartphone under the C series – Nokia C20 Plus. The device is a successor to the Nokia C20 that was recently released in the global market. The Nokia C20 Plus was released shortly after the release of the C20. Given a low budget, the Nokia C20 Plus is a typical budget phone with some hits and some misses. It has a dual rear camera setup, a large 6.5-inch screen and up to 2-day battery life, at least that’s what’s being advertised. Let’s start with a detailed review of the Nokia C20 Plus smartphone to see if it can upend rivals.

What’s in the box?

Nokia-C20-Plus-Box

Removing the box of Nokia C20 Plus, we are greeted with the device itself and the first impression is that everything is exactly the same as Nokia C20 and that is expected because this phone is basically the upgraded version of the Nokia C20. The color that I have with me is Ocean Blue and it also comes in Grey color. Just underneath that we have the user manuals and the product information which obviously nobody reads. We are also greeted with a soft TPU case. Just under this case, we get a micro-USB cable (obviously I’m not expecting USB type C as there wasn’t one in Nokia C20 as well). And then there’s a 5W charger which I think is going to take a long time to charge.

Okay, now inspect the device a little bit deeper.

Design

The build quality of the Nokia C20 Plus is solid, with a plastic body and a heavy in-hand feel. On the back of it, we see the Nokia branding. Textured just like the Nokia C20, the back panel boasts soothing pleasure for your eyes. The color – OceanBlue – is amazing. The quiet, modern design has been a favorite choice for many. An interesting specification you will notice is that the circular camera board housing at the back distinguishes it from a sea of very similar-looking budget devices. Unfortunately, there is no fingerprint sensor, but the face lock option is available on the Nokia C20 Plus model.

Nokia-C20-Plus-Design

On top of the device, we are blessed with our good old friend – the headphone jack which we don’t see on the latest phones nowadays, unfortunately. At the bottom, Nokia has given up the USB C port in favor of the rather dated micro-USB. At the bottom of the phone, we have a micro-USB port for charging and data transfer and just next to the micro-USB port, there’s a microphone. On the left-hand side, there’s nothing. On the right-hand side, we have the power slash lock button and just next to it, there are the volume rockers.

Display

Honestly, for a low-budget phone, the first impression of the screen looks great. It has a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel with decently good brightness levels and HD+ resolution. Colour accuracy levels and off-angle tilt-shift are pretty much on point for a low-budget device. On the other hand, you will miss the smooth visual experience as there is not a decent refresh rate. Adjusting the brightness can cause problems sometimes. Another noteworthy feature is the 20:9 aspect ratio. You can expect a decent viewing experience.

Nokia-C20-Plus-Screen

There is a little notch on the top, but just generally speaking, the first impression of the screen is fantastic. Also, at the bottom of the device, there is a slight bezel but the screen generally speaking is big enough and this is the bezel that does not make a big difference. As per the price point, you should not expect a lot from the C20 Plus phone but what you get is completely justified.

Performance

Powering the Nokia C20 Plus is a Unisoc SC9863A processor that can be compared with Snapdragon 425 SoC which was launched back in 2018. So do not expect the performance to be the best. However, the plus point is that the smartphone has stock UI and that’s it. Unfortunately, playing state-of-the-art games would not be suitable for this model. Nokia C20 Plus is running on Android 11 Go Edition. I got the 2GB RAM and 32GB storage variant which is just the right amount for the kind of apps you might run on a phone in this range.

Camera

Nokia-C20-Plus

The optics are not anything special on the Nokia C20 Plus. It has an 8-megapixel primary + 2-megapixel depth camera while there is a 5-megapixel selfie shooter. Both the camera can shoot videos up to 720p@30fps.Considering the price tag; there is nothing to talk about. In short, Nokia C20 Plus doesn’t have a good camera. With this model, you cannot expect decent daylight photography. The phone allows you to capture everyday photos, but with some limitations. The front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel sensor that can overexpose shots but gets inaccurate skin tones for the most part. Since the camera is a big factor in any smartphone, you will find many other options with superior specifications.

Battery

If I talk about the power, you would be surprised by its long battery life. The phone boasts a massive 5,000mAh battery that lasts easily for more than a day. Unfortunately, there is no fast charger; instead, you will get a tame 10W charger, which is taking approximately two hours to completely juice up the device. According to the company, it can deliver up to two days of usage on a single charge. As this is an HD+ smartphone, the battery will last for two days but if you use the phone for a long time, then it should last for a day. For charging, it has a micro-USB Port. Overall, the battery section of the Nokia C20 Plus definitely appeals to you over the low-budget phones.

Price

The Nokia C20 Plus starts at Rs 8,999 for the base variant that comes with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. The phone also comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage for Rs 9,999. You can purchase the phone from Nokia India’s official website, Reliance Digital, Jio Point outlets, and offline mobile retailers.

Buy or Not?

nokia c20 plus review

Whether it is a display, processor, or battery, Nokia C20 Plus offers almost all the essential features that can do all your daily tasks. While it offers solid build quality and good battery life, it is a bit of a letdown on aspects like performance and camera. However, finding Android 11 Go Edition on any low-budget phone is quite hard. You would be surprised by the long-lasting battery performance. Not only that, the latest software and graphics unit draw your attention to this model. This is where it separates itself from its peers. At a price as low as this, there is little to go wrong, especially with a brand like Nokia. So, if you have a limited budget and you are someone who just needs a device to get work done, you can undoubtedly go for Nokia C20 Plus.

Vodafone Idea’s financial stress to impact various stakeholders; govt support critical: ICRA

0

The telecom industry had been facing headwinds since the launch of services by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) which manifested in a decline in revenue and profit generation. Further, the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) penalty added to the woes of the industry and has kept the debt levels elevated. Owing to the aforementioned reasons, the financial position of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has been deteriorating due to mounting losses and increasing debt levels. As per an ICRA note, this stress on VIL is likely to impact financial as well as other stakeholders and can impact the industry structure.

Explains Sabyasachi Majumdar, Group Head & Senior Vice President, ICRA, “Over the last 12 quarters starting Q2FY2019, VIL has been reporting sizeable losses. Further, with the addition of AGR liabilities, the debt has burgeoned to more than Rs 2 lakh crore as on June 30, 2021 (including lease liabilities). This, along with consistent churn in the subscriber base, largely stagnant 4G user base, and pressure on ARPU levels have kept the revenue and profit generation muted. Further, the capex levels have remained low vis-à-vis competition resulting in limited network up-gradation and expansion. This coupled with sizeable repayment obligations in the coming quarters is likely to keep its financial position stressed. This pressure is likely to impact its financial stakeholders as VIL owes Rs 23,400 crores to lenders and Rs 168,190 crores to GoI towards spectrum and AGR deferred dues as on June 30, 2021. In addition, it will also have a bearing on VIL’s 255 million subscribers, large employee base, and vendors, especially tower companies. In a scenario of VIL’s collapse, tower companies will lose around 180,000 tenancies that VIL occupies, and out of these, ICRA expects only 40-50% of the tenancies to be gradually regained by the tower companies and balance would be lost owing to redundancies and network realignment.”

For the ICRA sample of independent tower companies, VIL occupies a 35% tenancy share and 36% revenue share. In a situation of VIL shutting down operations, tower companies will have to face a loss of these tenancies, translating into revenue and EBITDA decline for the industry. However, in that scenario, the existing 255 million subscribers of VIL will be taken up by the active telcos, who will have to expand their network presence to cater to a large additional subscriber base. ICRA expects that the existing telcos will gradually take up only 40-50% of VIL’s tenancies and the total tenancies for the industry by FY2024 are likely to remain lower than FY2021 levels. The demand for loadings and high-power small cells is expected to remain elevated for the tower industry. Apart from tenancy loss, tower companies will also bear the brunt of write-offs for VIL’s receivables, which have been witnessing a steady increase lately. With this, while the debt metrics are likely to witness moderation, relatively low debt levels and the strong liquidity position of the tower companies are likely to alleviate these concerns to some extent.

“Given the current situation and sizeable obligations in the near term for VIL, material external support (primarily from Government) can act as a relief measure. The most effective relief can come in the form of extension of a moratorium on spectrum dues beyond FY2022, which can result in deferment of dues payable in FY2023 to the tune of Rs. 32,000 crores for the industry of which Rs. 16,000 crores are for VIL. Moreover, a reduction in the levies paid by telcos, namely license fees and spectrum usage charges can also lift the EBITDA. A 1% reduction in levies leads to an annual saving of Rs. 1600 crores for the industry. This apart, other measures like reduction in interest rates on DoT dues, elongation of spectrum allotment tenure, and introduction of floor tariffs can also aid the industry. ICRA estimates that Re. 1 increase in ARPU translates into Rs. 450-500 crores EBITDA accretion for the industry. A combination of these relief measures could aid the financial profile and the structure of the industry,” concludes Ankit Jain, Sector Head & Assistant Vice President, ICRA.
