Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shared new insights about Apple’s upcoming AirPods Pro 3, expected to debut later this year. According to Gurman, the next-generation earbuds will introduce a major new feature including heart rate monitoring. Here’s what we know so far.
Apple AirPods Pro 3 – What to Expect?
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote, “As for Apple’s other devices, there’s a lot in the fall pipeline — though many of the new products are only incremental upgrades. There will be Apple Watch updates, faster Vision Pro headsets and iPad Pros with the M5 processor. You should also expect new AirPods Pro earbuds (I reported earlier this year that Apple is working on a pair with heart-rate monitoring), as well as HomePod minis and Apple TV set-top boxes.”
Apple has already tested heart rate tracking in its Powerbeats Pro 2, which launched earlier this year. When both earbuds are in use, LED optical sensors pulse more than 100 times per second to measure heart rate via blood flow. The collected data integrates with fitness apps and syncs directly with the Apple Health app on iPhone.
The technology is adapted from the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor. If a user wears both an Apple Watch and Powerbeats Pro 2, apps default to the watch’s heart rate data, a setup likely to continue with AirPods Pro 3.
Beyond heart rate monitoring, the AirPods Pro 3 are rumoured to bring better audio quality, stronger active noise cancellation, and design improvements. One of the most anticipated features is live translation, recently discovered in the iOS 26 beta. Designed for real-time multilingual conversations, this tool could be a game-changer for travellers, professionals, and global communication.
Leveraging Apple’s AI and machine learning, the live translation feature will work seamlessly with iPhones running iOS 26 with AirPods Pro 3 offering the most optimised experience.
On the design front, the AirPods Pro 3 may come with a slimmer charging case and smaller sensors while keeping the signature stem design. Apple is also expected to stick with its iconic white finish but could add new colour options for variety.
Inside, the earbuds are likely to be powered by the new H3 chipset, delivering improved performance, better noise cancellation, and longer battery life. These upgrades would make the AirPods Pro 3 more versatile for different scenarios, from workouts to daily commutes.
The last major AirPods Pro update was in September 2022, followed by a refresh in September 2023 that introduced a USB-C charging case. With the AirPods Pro 3 set to launch later this year, Apple is gearing up to make its biggest leap in wireless earbuds yet.
