In an unexpected move, WhatsApp has officially released its long-awaited Apple Watch companion app. It allows users to read messages, send replies, record voice notes, and access chat history directly from their wrist, no iPhone required for most interactions.
The app is now available for download and significantly expands WhatsApp’s presence in the Apple ecosystem. It follows the recent launch of the messaging platform’s dedicated iPad app earlier this year.

In a blog post, WhatsApp announced, “This new experience will help you stay on top of your chats without needing to pull out your iPhone. In addition to reading and responding to messages, for the first time WhatsApp on Apple Watch will now support many requested features.”

The companion app brings a variety of features familiar to iPhone users. Apple Watch owners can now see call notifications, read full-length messages, and record and send voice notes directly from the watch. Users can also react to messages using emojis, just as they would on the mobile app.
WhatsApp also says users can now view clearer images and stickers on the watch and even access recent chat history during conversations. As expected, end-to-end encryption remains enabled for all messages and calls on the Apple Watch version.
While the new app offers impressive functionality, it still has some limitations. For now, the Apple Watch version of WhatsApp remains tied to the iPhone. This means it won’t function when the watch is out of Bluetooth range. Additionally, although users can record and send voice notes, video playback is not supported yet. Reports suggest this is something WhatsApp could address in future updates.
How to install WhatsApp on an Apple Watch?
The WhatsApp app for Apple Watch is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models, running watchOS 10 or later. Users must have the latest stable version of WhatsApp from the App Store or the latest beta version via TestFlight.
The app can be installed through the Watch app on iPhone, and users won’t need to log in again once it’s set up.
WhatsApp’s arrival on the Apple Watch highlights its growing commitment to Apple devices. Earlier this year, the company released its first native iPad app, finally eliminating the need to rely on the web version for messaging.
The move also places WhatsApp ahead of competitors like Snapchat, which launched its own Apple Watch app earlier this year. Snapchat’s version allows users to send messages and voice notes but lacks advanced features such as viewing photos, Snaps, or extended chat history.
