Apple’s iPhone 16 Camera Button Inspires Realme’s New Feature, Not Part of Realme GT 7 Pro

0

Highlights

  • Realme showcased a camera button feature similar to the iPhone 16 camera button.
  • Apple launched the iPhone 16 series with a new touch-sensitive camera button.
  • Realme’s camera button operates much like the Apple button.
image

Apple recently launched its iPhone 16 series during the September 9, “It’s Glowtime” Event. While overall reactions to the launch event and the latest iPhones have been mixed from all corners, there were some new iPhone features that caught everyone’s attention. The new Camera Button was one such feature.

image

Now it appears even before users could get their hands on the new iPhones, scheduled to arrive on September 20, other competitive smartphone makers have started taking notes.

Chinese smartphone maker Realme is the first one to go on quick action mode, revealing a similar (or should we say clone) feature.

Realme’s Vice President, Chase Xu, recently shared a video on Weibo. In the video, he can be seen holding an unrecognisable Realme phone. Though what actually was the purpose of the video was to demonstrate a camera button positioned exactly where it is on the iPhone 16.

Posting the video, Chase Xu wrote, “We seem to have solid-state button technology, do you want it?” (Translated from Chinese to English via Google Translate)

This could mean two things. One could be that Realme has quickly followed Apple’s lead in offering a similar feature. Or the could be that a similar feature was already in the works at Realme, which seems rather unlikely given Realme’s history of picking features.

Is Apple the Trendsetter in the Smartphone Industry?

Anyhow, sharing this video, what Realme actually demonstrated is how Apple’s innovations continue to shape industry trends.

Note that Apple isn’t always the first to introduce new features. We cannot deny how many Apple firsts later turn them into industry standards.

A good example is the iPhone X’s notch. The feature at first was met with criticism. However, it was soon adopted by many Android manufacturers as well.

Now, can we expect the Apple’s iPhone 16 camera button to be the next trendsetter?

Also, we can’t exactly say that physical camera buttons are something entirely new. Sony has included them in some of its phones for years.

However, what’s interesting is that Apple’s version is different.

The iPhone 16’s camera button is touch-sensitive and provides tactile feedback. It makes clicking photos look easier and intuitive. This button allows users to control focus and zoom smoothly. This can be a great added feature for a hands-on photography experience.

Realme Taking Inspiration From Apple?

image

In Xu’s video, we can see Realme’s version of the camera button operates much like the Apple button. It is positioned similarly. Users can adjust focus and zoom with a simple press. It also provides the same tactile response that Apple’s version provides.

Realme has a history of taking inspiration from Apple devices.

Last year, the company launched the Realme C55 with a feature called Mini Capsule.

Users were quick to find similarities with Apple’s Dynamic Island.

However, Realme’s Mini Capsule doesn’t have the same level of functionality. It only mimics the design from Apple. It shows notifications around the selfie camera in a similar way.

Smartphone makers from China such as Realme, Xiaomi, and Huawei are especially quick at adopting trends whether it is an Apple feature or any other feature gaining momentum in the international market.

There’s no word yet on which Realme model the recently demonstrated Camera Button will feature in.

It will be interesting to see if dedicated Camera Buttons on smartphones become the next big thing.

Realme Teases ‘Camera Control’ Button Clone

Realme’s next big release is GT 7 Pro, which won’t include the camera button as we know it.

While we wait for more information on the Realme camera button, we can guess it to make an appearance in some midrange or budget Realme phones, following the trend of Mini Capsule.

It is now well known in the tech circles that Vivo’s highly anticipated X200 series will be the first phone to feature the latest MediaTek Dimensity 9400.

While the X200 series is set to launch in mid-October giving us an idea of when to expect the new chipset, a new leak hints at the exact date MediaTek might go with launch.

Thanks to a leak from famous tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, it appears MediaTek is expected to launch the new Dimensity 9400 chip on October 9.

As per DCS posts, the Vivo X200 series will be launched almost a week later on October 14.

image
Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo about Dimensity 9400 and X200 Series Launch date.

However, no official confirmation has been received yet. While we wait for that, here’s everything we already know about the upgraded chipset.

MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Key Specs (All Rumoured)

That MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9400 chip is going to be a big upgrade in terms of both performance and efficiency is something everyone already knows.

The chip will reportedly be built using TSMC’s advanced 3nm N3E technology. It was previously speculated that it will promise up to 30% better energy efficiency as compared to the previous generation.

If true, this indicates that all devices that will be using this chip in future could see noticeable improvements in their respective battery life.

As for the performance, the Dimensity 9400 will feature an octa-core CPU.

According to a Geekbench AI benchmark listing, it will have one powerful Cortex-X5 core clocked at 3.63 GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores at 2.80 GHz for additional power, and four Cortex-A725 cores running at 2.10 GHz for handling everyday tasks.

Compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300, this upcoming chipset will see a significant boost in clock speed.

The prime core especially impresses with a jump from 3.25 GHz to 3.63 GHz.

As for the graphics performance, the Dimensity 9400 is expected to feature a GPU from the Immortalis G9xx series.

Early tests suggest it will deliver 110fps in the GFXBench Aztec Ruins test at 1440p resolution, which is an 11.1% improvement over the previous generation’s 99fps.

Dimensity 9400 Benchmark Score Leak

Earlier this week, the AI benchmarks for the Dimensity 9400 also surfaced on Geekbench.

image

It revealed a score of 1,501 points in Single Precision, 1,906 points in Half Precision, and 1,793 points in Quantized tasks.

These scores confirm the octa-core CPU configuration.

However, it will be difficult to compare the leaked score with other competitive processors benchmarking performance since Geekbench’s AI benchmark is still new.

At a glance, Dimensity 9400’s peak clock speed may seem lower than its rivals. However, previous leaks claim the chip offers a 30% boost in performance, 35% better energy efficiency, and a 40% improvement in AI tasks.

How this fares in terms of performance when put side by side with Qualcomm and Apple processors is something that only time will tell.

The wait for real performance evaluation is not much since the first phone with this chip is expected to launch in early October. Some reports hint at an October 14 launch,

In any case, the Dimensity 9400 will face major competition.

Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is rumoured to reach a peak clock speed of 4.32 GHz. And we also have Apple’s A18 series, which is expected to hit 4.04 GHz. Looking at these numbers, both seem to be higher than MediaTek Dimensity 9400.

Is Mediatek Dimensity 9400 a game changer ?
Last year, MediaTek released the Dimensity 9300 chip, which was rather amazing.

Still, rumors are rife that its successor, Dimensity 9400, would be superior in performance and battery economy to the previous one.

How is that possible, you ask?

Well, here’s the deal—all is about advanced technology.

First of all, the Dimensity 9400 is going to use the ARMv9 instruction set and a completely new “Blackhawk” architecture developed with the help of ARM itself.
In simple terms, the chip will be able to do difficult jobs a lot better than before.
MediaTek is also leveraging TSMC’s most advanced 3nm process technology.

Without getting too technical, the smaller 3nm scale enables amazing transistor density.

Hello, increased performance and much-improved battery life!

By combining the most advanced chip design of ARM with the extremely small 3nm technology of TSMC, the Dimensity 9400 is all set to bring power and efficiency probably better than current mobile processors that are leading the flagships.
It’s building up to be a legitimate heavyweight contender.

How tough is it for Mediatek to dethrone Qualcomm ?

Qualcomm has been the long and proud king of the premium mobile processor market.

Nonetheless, the Dimensity range is constantly improving, leaving users with a very good alternative.

If the expectations are true, the 9400 is just going to cause huge ripples in the mobile processor market.

To frequent users of smartphones (basically everyone), a powerful chip like the Dimensity 9400 translates to smooth performance, longer battery life, and an overall better mobile experience.
In addition, increased competition tends to spur innovation and lower costs.
IT companies will need to step up their game.

It’s still early, but all signs point to MediaTek delivering something special with its next flagship mobile processor.

The Dimensity 9400 could be a total knockout that makes our current phones look like chumps in comparison.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold Goes Through The Durability and Bend Test, Pixel 9 Pro Repair Parts Price Revealed

0

Highlights

  • The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s hinge is strong
  • The inner display is fragile and easily scratched.
  • The phone lacks dust protection.
  • The teardown revealed a larger battery under the cover screen and a separate USB-C port.
  • Repair parts for the Pixel 9 series show significant price differences.

image

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold outer display featuring Gorilla Glass Victus 2 holds up well. (Image credit – JerryRigEverything)

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold was on JerryRigEverything durability test videos. While some issues were found, the biggest take from the tests is that the Pro Fold hinge remains one of its strongest features.

Jerry started with the screen. The outer display, featuring Gorilla Glass Victus 2, holds up well, with minor scratches appearing at level six of the text. It also had some deeper scratches at level seven.

However, the inner display turned out to be much more fragile. Google is calling the inner display Super Actua and it is made of Ultra Thin Glass. It scratches at level two of Jerry’s test. Plus, the fingernails were also causing damage to the screen.

Now it was the phone’s exterior’s turn.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is built from high-strength aerospace-grade aluminium. In the hinge, it is made up of a combination of multi-alloy steel, which provides some additional strength.

The biggest issue is the lack of dust protection (IPX8 rating). As soon as Jerry exposed the phone to dirt or sand, the hinge started making grinding sounds. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold performed well in a closed bend test. But things went downhill during the open and bent from the back testing.

The left and right sides of the panels cover the spine of the hinge but there wasn’t not much resistance.

The antenna lines near the hinge are a weak point. This was also the problem with the previous Pixel Fold model.

image

Pixel 9 Pro Fold cover side screen during the back bend test. (Image credit – JerryRigEverything)

During the bend test, the cover side screen popped off from the case. However, it did not break. The hinge also remained intact, the same as was seen previous version of the phone.

If we compare, Samsung’s Z Fold 6 fared better under similar conditions. It had two halves locking together securely. There was no catastrophic bending.

The video also included a teardown of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The teardown video revealed that the larger battery is placed under the cover screen. The other half of the phone has a smaller battery and the motherboard.

For easier repairs, the USB-C port is on a separate board. This was also a common aspect of the slab-style phones we have seen this year.

The vapour chamber is found under the battery and Tensor G4. Meanwhile, Zach observed, “Most of the thermal heat dissipation happens from the backside, or internal side of the device when the screen is closed, flowing from the processor to the large vapour chamber and then into the centre of the Fold, which is an interesting move since the centre of the phone has that plastic folding screen which I don’t think would be super great for letting heat out…”

Speaking of repairs, we have some updates on that as well.

Listed Repair Parts for the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL

iFixit has listed repair parts for the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, with the year-over-year comparison indicating some pricing changes.

iFixit has revealed that Pixel 9 Pro repair parts reveal an expensive camera and a cheaper rear cover given the new design.

The Pixel 8 Pro rear case worth $172.99 includes the following:

  • Rear Panel
  • Metal and Plastic Frame
  • Edge Bezel
  • Rear Camera Bezel and Lens Covers
  • External Side Buttons and Internal Button Switches
  • Wireless Charging Coil

How Much Will GTA 6 Cost?

GTA 6 night

For some time now, leakers and insider tipsters have hinted at an unprecedented budget ranging from $1 billion to $2 billion. If we assume this to be true, a high price tag shouldn’t be a shock. Rumours even suggest somewhere around – $150 (£120, €140) price tag.

The newly launched iPhone 16 series has Apple Intelligence as of one its main highlights.

However, the excitement around the Apple Intelligence in iPhone 16 has turned out to be a little buzzkill. Now Apple users have to wait for key features thanks to Apple’s scattered release plans.

Apple earlier announced that Apple Intelligence would not be immediately available on the iPhone 16 series.

The advanced Apple Intelligence tools, instead, will be rolled out in stages. The first release along with iOS 18.1 will start with a public release in the U.S. in October. The first set of features will initially only be available in English.

Here’s all you need to know about Apple Intelligence features in coming iOS 18 releases.

Apple Intelligence Features Coming in iOS 18.1

Apple Intelligence features to be included with iOS 18.1 launch are as follows:

  • Writing tools to proofread, rewrite, and more
  • AI-powered Focus mode
  • Transcript summaries
  • New Siri with some of its coming upgrades
  • Notification summaries
  • Clean Up and Memory creation in Photos
  • Mail and Safari content summaries

Apple Intelligence Features Scheduled for iOS 18.2

Later in December 2024, iOS 18.2 will drop another lot of Apple Intelligence features.

As per reports, iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 will release the following new Apple Intelligence feature –

  • Genmoji, for creating custom emoji
  • Image Playground and other image generation tools
  • ChatGPT integration for Siri and writing tools
  • Siri’s personal context awareness too
  • Apple Intelligence is also expected to be released in localized English to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom

How Regular Apple Intelligence Feature Drops Help Apple?

Genmoji likely won’t arrive in the first Apple Intelligence release set for iOS 18.1.

9to5Mac’s Ryan Christoffel, in a recent report, outlines two main reasons they believe a scattered Apple Intelligence release is eventually in Apple’s favour.

The first reason as per Christoffel is that AI in itself is something worth going slow in order to get it right.

We have previously seen Pixel 9 dealing with issues after releasing AI-enabled features in one go and dealing with feedback from all corners on everything all at once.

A slow and steady release of Apple Intelligence features will help Apple in minimizing the post-release PR headache.

Secondly, Christoffel believes a constant drop in new AI features will establish Apple’s position as a major AI player.

Although Apple releasing Intelligence features in gaps is certainly due to the many features not being ready, it actually helps the Cupertino giant in keeping things planned.

“Apple Intelligence isn’t just a group of features in a single software update. It’s a set of powerful upgrades that will make Apple devices better every couple of months moving forward. And help Apple look like an AI leader in the process,” writes Christoffel in their report.

iOS 18 release date

New Siri with ChatGPT integration

iPhone users will be able to download iOS 18 on eligible iPhones starting Monday, September 16.

However, for those who are not upgrading and will be sticking to older iPhones, you can install iOS 18 when it becomes available on September 16, provided your device supports the latest software.

Your iPhone is Now Theft-Proof – Activation Lock Now Extended to Internal Components in iOS 18

0

Highlights

  • With iOS 18, Apple extends the Activation Lock feature to individual iPhone components.
  • It will be difficult for thieves to sell parts from stolen iPhones.
  • The new feature links major replaceable components to the user’s Apple account.

Newly updated iPhones will be theft-proof. Yes, you read that right – theft-proof. Apple with iOS 18 is extending the Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts.

The new feature is part of Apple’s plan to put an end to the fraudulent practice of selling parts from stolen iPhones.

The Activation Lock feature was introduced in 2013 and locks the phone to the original owner’s Apple ID and password.

This made the life of thieves difficult as even when they wiped data and reset the stolen iPhone, with an active Activation Lock they couldn’t use the phone.

However, Since the Activation Lock feature, most stolen phones are now sold on the grey market for components. Now, when the Cupertino giant has made a clever change to the feature to make even selling components difficult.

New Activation Lock Feature in iOS 18

This new feature will link the major replaceable components of iPhones to the user’s Apple account and Activation Lock once activated will lock the components.

This means these components will be locked to the Apple account and will ask for the linked Apple Account to verify when installed on another iPhone.

This small new feature now practically makes it impossible for thieves to use the stolen iPhone or even its replaceable components.

The feature has been noted by Beta Profiles on Threads.

Beta Profiles revealed that this Activation Lock feature was enabled in the iOS 18 Release Candidate version. This was introduced to public beta testers and developers earlier this week.

Experts believe thieves while selling different parts of sloten iPhones now would not be able to profit off these components.

These stolen components are usually sold to repair shops but now with the new Activation Lock notification, repair shops will be hesitant to use these parts.

imageReplaceable parts such as Battery, Display, Camera, etc., in iPhone 12 and later can now be linked to your Apple Account. (Image Credit – Beta Profiles on Threads)

Beta Profile also share screenshots of the notifications users would get while trying to use iPhone components locked to someone’s Apple Account.

The iPhone will basically inform you if the part you replaced actually comes from an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled.

If yes, this would be a clear signal that the part you replaced comes from a stolen iPhone.

iOS 18 also allow the original user to unlock that part but it won’t be possible with the owner’s password.

Apple announced the changes in repair policy along with extending the Activation lock to components back in April.

Here’s what Apple said at that time, “Apple will also extend its popular Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts in order to deter stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts. Requested by customers and law enforcement officials, the feature was designed to limit iPhone theft by blocking a lost or stolen iPhone from being reactivated. If a device under repair detects that a supported part was obtained from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted.

Once iOS 18 is installed, the parts Activation Lock feature will work on iPhone 12 or later.

Is It Possible to Bypass the New Activation Lock Feature?

As BetaProfiles noted on Threads, when the Activation Lock notification for parts pops up, users can simply hit the Cancel button and still use the phone.

However, the iPhone will notify the use of an “Unknown Part” in the Settings app.

This could impact future service at Apple Store. And even pose issues when you try to resell the iPhone in future.

First Ultra Wideband Smart Lock Won’t Support iOS 18’s Hands-Free Unlock

In other news, those Apple users looking forward to another hand-free locking feature have met with disappointment.

Apple earlier announced a new iOS 18 feature for the Home app that would provide support for hands-free unlocking with an ultra-wideband lock.

While the first UWB smart lock has finally been announced, it was noticed that it won’t support the new Apple feature to fans’ disappointment.

U-tec announced the Ultraloq Bolt Mission UWB+NFC as the first smart lock with UWB support. However, the iPhone doesn’t seem to be lucky enough to get this feature.

Although iOS 18 and watchOS 11 introduced UWB smart lock support, U-tec’s new lock feature will not support Apple’s tech.

This will only be available for Android users at the moment.

The company’s press release reveals, “Apple has officially announced that the interface will be opened later.”

iOS 18 will be released to the public on Monday, September 16. It needs an iPhone XR or the later models.

FAQs

What is the new feature in iOS 18 related to iPhone parts?

iOS 18 extends the Activation Lock feature to individual iPhone components, making it difficult for thieves to sell parts from stolen iPhones.

How does the new Activation Lock feature work for iPhone parts?

The feature links major replaceable components to the user’s Apple account, requiring verification when installed on another iPhone, thus preventing unauthorized use.

What impact will the new Activation Lock feature have on iPhone theft?

It aims to deter iPhone theft and the sale of stolen parts, as repair shops will be hesitant to use components flagged by the Activation Lock.

Can the new Activation Lock feature for parts be bypassed?

Users can hit the Cancel button to use the phone, but the iPhone will notify the use of an “Unknown Part” in the Settings app, which could impact future service and resale.

What was Apple’s First theft reduction feature ?

Apple’s first major theft-reduction feature was Find My. If someone stole your device, and

you had access to either another Apple product or simply the web, you could track its location.

Thieves of course learned that switching it off would stop tracking, but Apple fixed that back in 2021.

With iOS 15, your iPhone is still traceable through the Find My network even when the device is powered off. With iOS 15, the phone is not really fully ‘powered off’, it stays in a low-power state and acts like an AirTag, allowing any nearby iOS device to pick up the Bluetooth signal and send back its location.

If iPhone runs out of battery during the day, you still have can find its location for few hours .

Apple says the location tracking will even keep working whilst the phone is reset to factory settings with Activation Lock enabled.

This feature is standard on the iPhone 11 and later.

What kind of thief’s are seen stealing iPhones ?

A thief thinking of stealing an iPhone knows that their location can be tracked; that they won’t be able to sell it as working phone; and it will now be worth a lot less as parts.
Many phone thefts are committed by drug addicts looking to get money for little money .

Can Activation Locks be wiped out ?

Apple has introduced the ability to remove Activation Locks from Macs when wiping them, rather than when setting them up as new.

The feature is coming to Apple Business Manager, so enterprise customers will be able to remove Activation Lock from entire batches of managed devices when preparing them for sale.

It is ensures that this also covers Activation Lock for parts.
This is good step towards making iPhones almost theft-proof.

CCI Accuses Samsung and Xiaomi of Unfair Practices in India, Amazon and Flipkart Under Scrutiny

0

Highlights

  • CCI accused Samsung and Xiaomi of unfair trade practices.
  • The commission also put e-commerce companies Amazon and Flipkart under scrutiny.
  • These findings could significantly impact Amazon and Flipkart’s market position

image

“Exclusivity in business is anathema. Not only is it against free and fair competition but also against the interest of consumers,” CCI’s additional director general GV Siva Prasad wrote in the Amazon and Flipkart reports, in identical findings.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has accused major smartphone brands such as Samsung and Xiaomi of involving in unfair trade practices and violating antitrust laws in the country. E-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart along with Samsung and Xiaomi have been facing similar charges for a while now.

According to regulatory reports revealed by Reuters, the investigation revealed that Amazon and Flipkart were involved in such practices.

These included organising exclusive product launches, providing deep discounts, and giving preferential treatment to select sellers. It also included other companies like Motorola, Realme, OnePlus, Vivo, and Lenovo.

The CCI have submitted a 1027-page long report on Amazon and a 1696-page report on Flipkart, detailing all charges.

The report also suggests that these exclusive partnerships harmed competition. They are particularly unfair to traditional brick-and-mortar retailers.

Amazon and Flipkart allegedly provided benefits like subsidized warehousing and marketing to favoured sellers. This changed the market share unfairly and may have increased prices for consumers.

These findings come as a major blow to Amazon and Flipkart.

Both e-commerce companies have dominated India’s booming e-commerce market for over a decade now. They are expected to hit $160 billion by 2028. Experts now believe that such accusations, losing consumer trust and facing penalties could definitely hurt their market position.

As for smartphone brands, the situation is equally troubling. Brands in question such as Samsung and Xiaomi together have almost 36% of the Indian market share. They also are likely to face scrutiny for their involvement.

The CCI has further requested financial statements from the implicated companies. All this is a part of a deeper investigation.

This is not the first time such accusations have come in the spotlight. This issue was first raised back in 2020 when the Confederation of All India Traders filed a complaint.

They accused e-commerce platforms of sidelining small retailers. According to the then accusations, the giant e-commerce companies deliberately block small retailers during new phone launches.

Many experts believe that CCI’s next steps could likely include imposing fines. It could also push for possible changes to business practices. If this happens, it will be setting a precedent for future regulation in India’s smartphone and e-commerce industries

FAQs

What are the main accusations against Samsung and Xiaomi by the CCI?

The CCI has accused Samsung and Xiaomi of unfair trade practices and violating antitrust laws in India.

How did Amazon and Flipkart allegedly harm competition?

Answer. Amazon and Flipkart allegedly organized exclusive product launches, provided deep discounts, and gave preferential treatment to select sellers, which harmed competition and traditional retailers.

What could be the potential impact of these findings on Amazon and Flipkart?

These findings could hurt Amazon and Flipkart’s market position, lead to fines, and push for changes in their business practices.

What is the problem which has resulted in the accusation against Flipkart & Amazon ?

Retailers in India have accused Amazon, Flipkart, and smartphone companies of exclusive phone launches online, stating that traditional retailers suffered because they didn’t have access to the latest models.
Online phone sales have seen a significant increase, with Flipkart and Amazon holding the majority share in the market.

What could be the result of the accusation against Flipkart & Amazon ?

The investigation is a setback for Amazon and Flipkart in a time of growth .

This is due to their conflicts with small retailers for impacting their offline businesses.

It was reported that both companies used their foreign investments to offer subsidised rates for services like warehousing and marketing to a select group of sellers.
The investigation started from a complaint filed by an affiliate of the Confederation of All India Traders, the country’s largest retailer association.

The CCI will review the feedback on this from Amazon, Flipkart, the retailer association, and the smartphone companies in the coming weeks and could potentially impose fines and mandate changes to their business practices.
