Apple has announced that it will add support for end-to-end encryption in RCS messaging on iPhones. This move, in collaboration with the GSM Association, brings RCS closer to iMessage in terms of security.

The latest RCS Universal Profile 3.0, which includes end-to-end encryption, was just released today. However, Apple hasn’t confirmed exactly when it will roll out this update to users. The company played a key role in leading a cross-industry effort to bring this security feature to the RCS Universal Profile.

Apple first introduced RCS support to iPhones with iOS 18.1 last fall. RCS improves messaging between iPhone and Android users by replacing traditional SMS with a more modern standard. It includes features like typing indicators, emoji reactions, read receipts, and support for higher-resolution photos and videos.

Until now, the RCS Universal Profile didn’t support end-to-end encryption, meaning messages sent through it weren’t as secure as those on iMessage. But with this new update, Apple has committed to integrating encryption into its ecosystem.

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said, “End-to-end encryption is a powerful privacy and security technology that iMessage has supported since the beginning, and now we are pleased to have helped lead a cross industry effort to bring end-to-end encryption to the RCS Universal Profile published by the GSMA. We will add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in future software updates.”

Meanwhile, reiterating commitment to secure messaging experience, Google said, “We’ve always been committed to providing a secure messaging experience, and Google Messages users have had end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) RCS messaging for years. We’re excited to have this updated specification from GSMA and work as quickly as possible with the mobile ecosystem to implement and extend this important user protection to cross-platform RCS messaging.”

Apple’s commitment to this update is a big step in improving the security of cross-platform messaging.

For those unfamiliar, end-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient can read messages. The decryption keys stay on users’ devices preventing any intermediaries from accessing the conversations. iMessage has had this level of security since its launch and now RCS messages will soon get the same protection.

iPhone 17 Air Could Be Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Yet But There’s a Catch

0

Highlights

  • Apple plans to make the iPhone 17 Air its thinnest iPhone ever at around 5.5mm.
  • The iPhone 17 Air will feature a camera bar spanning almost the full width of the phone, making it 9.5mm at its thickest part.
  • Only iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will receive vapor chamber cooling and better thermal management.

New rumours reveal key details of next iPhone series. (Image credit – Apple)

Apple is reportedly making the iPhone 17 Air its thinnest iPhone ever, though this might come at the cost of downgraded specifications. Earlier this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo surprised many by predicting that the iPhone 17 Air could be even thinner than expected. Now, another leaker has backed up his claim.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 17 Air will be around 5.5mm at its thinnest part. Leaker Ice Universe supports this claim and adds that the camera bar will be 4mm thick, making the phone 9.5mm at its thickest point. In imperial measurements, that translates to approximately 0.22 inches for the body and 0.37 inches at its thickest part.

image
Ice Universe’s recent Weibo post. (Translated via Google Translate)

The camera design is also changing, rather than a traditional bump, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a camera bar spanning almost the full width of the phone, even though it will house only a single camera.

With this design, the iPhone 17 Air will be significantly thinner than previous estimates, which suggested a thickness of around 6.25mm.

iPhone 17 Pro Models Will Get Better Cooling, Not the Air

Apple was previously rumoured to be upgrading the entire iPhone 17 lineup with vapor chamber cooling, something Android phones have had for years. But now, a new report by tipster Setsina Digital on Weibo suggests only the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will get it.

image
Setsuna Digital’s recent post on Weibo. (Translated via Google Translate)

Vapor chambers help dissipate heat more efficiently, reducing performance throttling. The A19 Pro chip, expected in the Pro models, will also have better thermal management, meaning sustained performance should be much smoother.

So, while the iPhone 17 Air might be Apple’s slimmest iPhone ever, it looks like Apple is keeping the best performance and cooling tech for the Pro models.

FAQs

Q1. How thin will the iPhone 17 Air be?

Answer. The iPhone 17 Air will be around 5.5mm at its thinnest part.

Q2. What is unique about the camera design of the iPhone 17 Air?

Answer. The iPhone 17 Air will feature a camera bar spanning almost the full width of the phone, housing only a single camera.

Q3. Which iPhone 17 models will receive vapor chamber cooling and better thermal management?

Answer. Only the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will receive vapor chamber cooling and better thermal management.

Apple’s ‘HomePad’ Delayed Until After WWDC Due to iOS 19 Redesign

0

Highlights

  • Apple’s HomePad delayed initially due to new Siri capability challenges and now to align with iOS 19 redesign.
  • Mass production of the HomePad delayed from Q1 2025 to Q3 2025.
  • Apple is ensuring the HomePad seamlessly integrates into the evolving software ecosystem before launch.

Latest report suggests Apple’s ‘HomePad’ delayed again. (Image credit – Apple)

Apple was expected to launch a new Home product, often referred to as ‘HomePad,’ this month. However, delays have pushed its release back, initially due to challenges in developing new Siri capabilities.

Now, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, another major reason for the delay is ensuring the device’s interface aligns with iOS 19’s redesign. Here’s what we know.

Software Issues Holding Back Apple HomePad

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kuo explained, “Three months ago, I predicted that mass production of the new display-equipped HomePod would slip from 1Q25 to 3Q25 (after WWDC) due to software development issues. Beyond Apple Intelligence, the issues also involve ensuring the HomePod’s interface aligns with new OS updates (like iOS 19) set to roll out across other devices in 2H25. This alignment is essential for seamlessly integrating new products into Apple’s ecosystem.”

Back in December, Kuo had already warned that software challenges could delay Apple’s display-equipped HomePod until Q3 2025. At that time, Mark Gurman still expected a March launch, though later reports suggested a spring release was uncertain.

Initially, many believed the delay was entirely due to Apple Intelligence, the AI-powered Siri upgrade originally planned for iOS 18.4. However, Apple has now pushed that update further into 2025.

Now, Kuo suggests that while AI-powered Siri is a factor, iOS 19’s major redesign is also playing a big role in the HomePad’s delay. Apple wants to ensure the new device fits seamlessly into its evolving software ecosystem before launching it.

9to5Mac’s Ryan Christoffel, in their report, highlights, “Kuo’s explanation doesn’t necessarily justify delaying a major product. Siri’s development challenges are one thing, but if the new homeOS that HomePad will run offers a sneak peek of what’s coming with iOS 19, I don’t see how that’s a bad thing at all.”

“Unless, perhaps, Apple expects iOS 19’s design to be in flux over the beta season this summer. In that case, maybe it wants to save itself the trouble of redesigning homeOS elements after the fact by just shipping the new OS once its design plans are more stable,” Christoffel further added.

FAQs

Q1. Why has the release of Apple’s new Home product, “HomePad,” been delayed?

Answer. Initially, the delay was due to challenges in developing new Siri capabilities. Additionally, ensuring the device’s interface aligns with the iOS 19 redesign has also contributed to the delay.

Q2. What does analyst Ming-Chi Kuo say about the HomePad’s production timeline?

Answer. Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the mass production of the display-equipped HomePod has been delayed from Q1 2025 to Q3 2025 (after WWDC) due to software development issues and the need to align with new OS updates like iOS 19.

Q3. What is the role of iOS 19 in the HomePad’s delay?

Answer. The redesign of iOS 19 is a significant factor in the HomePad’s delay, as Apple wants to ensure that the new device fits seamlessly into its evolving software ecosystem before launching it.

Highlights

  • Snapchat introduces AI-powered video Lenses exclusively for Snapchat Platinum subscribers.
  • The three AI Video Lenses launched are named Raccoon, Fox and Spring Flowers, with more to be added weekly.
  • Snapchat is transitioning from using external AI tools to developing their own in-house AI models.

Snapchat is rolling out its first-ever AI-powered video Lenses, exclusively for subscribers of its premium tier Snapchat Platinum, which costs $15.99 per month. These Lenses use Snap’s own generative video model built in-house, the company revealed in a blog post.

This launch follows Snap’s announcement of an AI video-generation tool at its Partner Summit last September. A Snap spokesperson confirmed that the new AI Video Lenses are powered by updated versions of this technology.

Snapchat has long been a leader in augmented reality (AR), but it has also been investing heavily in AI to stay competitive. With these new Lenses, Snap is offering something unique, features that aren’t available on Instagram or TikTok.

As of now, Snapchat is introducing three AI Video Lenses:

  • “Raccoon” and “Fox” – These animate furry animals that snuggle up with you.
  • “Spring Flowers” – Creates a zoom-out effect, revealing the user holding a bouquet.

Snapchat plans to add more AI Video Lenses every week. Users can access them from the Lens carousel, capture a Snap using either their front or back camera, and the AI-generated video will automatically save to Memories.

“These Lenses, powered by our in-house built generative video model, bring some of the most cutting-edge AI tools available today to Snapchatters through a familiar Lens format. We have a long history of being first movers to bring advanced AR, ML, and AI tools directly to our community, and we’re excited to see what Snapchatters create,” the company wrote in the blog post.

While Snap has previously used AI tools from OpenAI and Google, it is now focusing on building its own in-house AI models.

Just last month, the company introduced an AI text-to-image research model for mobile devices, which will power more Snapchat features soon. By developing its own AI, Snap says it can offer high-quality tools while keeping operating costs lower.

WhatsApp video calls have come a long way, evolving from simple one-on-one chats to supporting group calls with up to 32 people. It’s widely used for both personal and professional conversations, and now, WhatsApp might be working on a new feature to give users more control over their privacy during video calls. Here’s what we know so far.

New Video Call Privacy Feature

According to a recent report by Android Authority, a new option has been spotted in WhatsApp’s beta version 2.25.7.3 for Android, which allows users to turn off their camera before answering an incoming video call. Currently, WhatsApp automatically opens the front camera when a user receives a video call, even showing a preview while the phone is ringing.

image

The new feature introduces an option labeled “Turn off your video.” If a user taps this before answering, the call will switch to voice-only mode. WhatsApp will then display another option that says “Accept without video.”

As of now, users can only disable video after answering a call, but this update would let them do it beforehand.

This feature could be particularly useful for protecting privacy, especially when receiving video calls from unknown numbers. While it’s always best to avoid answering calls from strangers, this added control ensures that users are not immediately visible if they do choose to pick up.

It could also come in handy for situations where a user isn’t in a position to turn on their camera, even when receiving calls from known contacts.

For those who want to avoid unwanted calls altogether, WhatsApp already offers an option to silence calls from unknown numbers. The calls still appear in the call log, but users don’t have to deal with the interruption.

FAQs

Q1. What new feature is WhatsApp testing in its beta version?

Answer. WhatsApp is testing a feature that allows users to turn off their camera before answering incoming video calls, enhancing privacy control.

Q2. How does the “Turn off your video” option work in WhatsApp video calls?

Answer. The “Turn off your video” option lets users switch to voice-only mode before answering a video call, preventing the automatic activation of the front camera.

Q3. What are the privacy benefits of the new WhatsApp video call privacy feature?

Answer. This feature is useful for avoiding visibility during video calls from unknown numbers or in situations where users can’t turn on their camera, offering added control over privacy.

Realme has officially teased the global launch of the Realme 14 5G series. This comes after the brand introduced the Realme 14 Pro lineup in India back in January and showcased it globally at MWC 2025 earlier this month. The teaser image offers a first look at the Realme 14 5G’s design. Here’s our report.

Realme 14 5G Official Teaser

The teaser poster, shared by Realme’s global handle on X (formerly Twitter), mentions “series,” suggesting that multiple models could be unveiled.

The design follows Realme’s new ‘Mecha Design’ theme, with the phone shown in a silver colour option. The rectangular camera module on the back houses dual-camera sensors, an LED flash and an extra cutout.

The text “50MP AI Camera” is engraved within the module. The right side of the phone features the volume rocker and power button, with the latter sporting orange colour accents.

India’s two telecom giants Airtel and Jio have signed separate deals with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite internet to the country. This move could help provide high-speed internet to even the most remote areas of India.

However, both deals depend on SpaceX securing government approvals to officially offer Starlink services in India. Here’s the full story.

Airtel announced its agreement with SpaceX this week, highlighting its plans to sell Starlink equipment in its stores and offer Starlink’s services to businesses. The telecom provider also aims to use Starlink’s network to bring internet access to rural schools, health centers, and remote villages.

This partnership will also explore how Airtel and SpaceX can support each other’s infrastructure in India. While Airtel already collaborates with Eutelsat OneWeb for satellite internet, adding Starlink will broaden its reach to underserved areas.

“By adding Starlink, (in addition to its existing alliance with Eutelsat OneWeb) to its offerings, Airtel will further its ability to offer nationwide connectivity and connect previously underserved areas, particularly those with limited to no coverage today. With Starlink enterprise suite, Airtel will be able to offer enterprises, businesses, and communities comprehensive and seamless connectivity packages,” said the company in a statement.

“Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity,” said Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman, Bharti Airtel.

“This collaboration enhances our ability to bring world-class high-speed broadband to even the most remote parts of India, ensuring that every individual, business, and community has reliable internet. Starlink will complement and enhance Airtel’s suite of products to ensure reliable and affordable broadband for our Indian customers wherever they live and work,” he added.

Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, added, “We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India. We are constantly amazed by the incredible and inspiring things that people, businesses and organisations do when they are connected via Starlink.”

“The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in India’s telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering makes great sense for our business,” Shotwell added.

Jio’s Deal with SpaceX

Following Airtel’s announcement, Jio confirmed its own agreement with SpaceX on Wednesday. Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, will integrate Starlink’s satellite services into its broadband ecosystem. This means Starlink equipment will be available in Jio’s retail outlets and online stores, along with installation and activation support.

Previously, Jio and SpaceX had opposing views on satellite spectrum allocation, with Jio advocating for an auction while SpaceX favoured administrative allocation. However, with the government opting for the latter, both companies are now aligned.

“Through this agreement, the parties will leverage Jio’s position as the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic and Starlink’s position as the world’s leading low Earth orbit satellite constellation operator to deliver reliable broadband services across the country, including the most rural and remote regions of India,” Jio said in a statement.

“Starlink complements JioAirFiber and JioFiber by extending high speed internet to the most challenging of locations in a quick and affordable manner,” Jio said in a statement.

“By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country,” said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO, Reliance Jio.

“We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations and businesses with access to Starlink’s high speed internet services,” said Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX.

SpaceX is currently awaiting security clearance from the Indian government, with the approval process under review at the Home Ministry.
