At Google I/O, a host of AI updates were revealed.
Among them was “Ask Photos”, a new AI-powered tool that will be added to Google Photos in the upcoming months.
With the help of this feature, users will be able to more easily sort through their complete collection of photos and videos by using context-aware voice and text prompts to search for specific images or elements within photographs.
Basically, you can ask Google Photos to locate a specific photo, and amazingly, it will.
“Ask Photos” surpasses basic search by comprehending context and providing answers to more intricate queries, all made possible using Gemini models.
Google gave instances of how Gemini could recognize a specific license plate number on a car type and determine a child’s swimming instruction age based on pictures in the user’s library.
The type of content backed up to the user’s Google Photos library may affect the feature’s capacity to find precise identifiers like these, but in order to expedite the search, upload dates, locations, and other metadata will also be used.
Google mentioned that “Ask Photos” will work with videos as well.
We’ll have to take Google’s word for it at the moment though as a live demo or example was not provided during the event.
The company tentatively plans to roll out this feature over the summer, but it is unclear whether it will require an internet connection or be available locally on the device.
