  • Default setting ensures no accidental background voice capture.
  • Update follows concerns over privacy and AI-generated audio.

An app update for OpenAI’s ChatGPT on Android has recently added a new toggle that disables background listening.

Now users can more confidently engage in voice discussions with the chatbot.

With this update, ChatGPT will respond to voice questions only when the app is active and in the foreground.

ChatGPT Could Hear Background Voice

ChatGPT for Android Adds a Privacy Toggle to Disable Background Listening

Previously, the ChatGPT app on Android allowed users to continue voice chatting even when the app was pushed to the background or when the smartphone’s screen was turned off.

This feature was touted as being able to offer contextual answers and seamless conversations, but also, privacy-wise, it worried the users who would forget to disable the voice chat manually.

The introduction of the on-off switch to disable background conversations might likely have been due to some of those incidents, such as the Scarlett Johansson voice cloning controversy, which brought to the limelight the dangers of AI-generatable audio.

Enhancing Privacy

New toggle to disable background listening added in ChatGPT Android app

The new toggle for disabling background conversations can be found under Settings > Voice > Background Conversations.

By default, this toggle is off for all users with the newest update to the ChatGPT app, ensuring that users do not accidentally expose themselves to undesired listening by the chatbot.

This update was released just days after OpenAI announced its new GPT-4o AI model.

It features powerful multi-language voice translation capabilities and is claimed to be significantly faster and more resource-efficient than the barebones GPT-3.5.

OpenAI made the decision to make GPT-4o available to all users for free, with higher daily usage limits available to paid subscribers.

ChatGPT is now the number one AI chatbot, surpassing other companies’ offerings like Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity AI, and Meta AI

Recently, the chatbot went offline for several hours, panicking millions of its users, only for it to be brought back to service in due time, showcasing just how much AI chatbots have become a key part of our internet usage.

Google Relaxes Repair Policy for Pixel Smartphones with Unauthorized Parts

0

Highlights

  • Google’s new policy allows for return of devices with unapproved parts.
  • Revised policy focuses on safety concerns for refusing repairs.
  • Previous strict policy faced backlash; new approach is more consumer-friendly.
  • Google now emphasizes working with users for device repair solutions.

Google is in trouble for a policy that many find to be a bit too extreme with its maintenance policy over Pixel smartphones

The original policy mentioned that if a Pixel device was turned in for repair, with parts that are illegal from Google, then Google wouldn’t repair or even release the item to the owner. Yikes!

The attitude was in place since mid-2023, and Google was quick to be called out for being too strict.

Credit to them, though, they accepted the concern and said they would revise the policy, which they have now done

Google Policy Change

Google Policy Change

Google’s policy for repair of Pixels with unapproved parts has been officially updated as of this morning.

The new policy is a bit more lenient, with a new passage that reads “If You send a Device containing non-Google-authorized parts for repair, in certain situations (e.g., safety), Service Provider may be unable to repair Your Device\”

This service provider will return Your Device unless health or safety regulations prevent us from doing so.

If the service provider is unable to return your device, Google will work with you to determine the next steps.”

So, basically, Google is no longer explicitly saying it won’t repair or return devices with unapproved parts inside.

It’s just given itself some wiggle room in the case of safety concerns, which is understandable.

If fixing the equipment is judged as dangerous due to said unauthorized parts inside, they reserve the right not to proceed.

Google Repair Policy Being Relaxed

Google Repair Policy Being Relaxed

The key difference being that they will attempt to return your item if it can’t be fixed, rather than just holding on to it.

If returning it is too dangerous-say if there’s a bloated battery-Google says they would  “work with you on next steps” rather than holding your device hostage.

That’s a softer stance from the previous language, which said bluntly: “You will not send in a device containing non-Google-authorized parts; if you do, your device will not be returned to you.”

In any case, this goes to show you the change in tone at Google.

While the new policy still leaves a few things to be answered regarding what would happen in some instances, it does lay down clearer expectations.

If returning the device is not possible, you may receive the repaired device, an unrepaired device, or any other resolution.

However, Google will no longer take your property just because it contains unapproved parts.

Overall, this is just making the policy clearer and should be a benefit to those who believe consumers have the right to repair.

Google understands that device owners are inclined to use third-party components, and they are determined to work with consumers instead of simply dishing out the penalties.

It’s a good step for those who believe in right-to-repair.

FAQs

What was Google’s original repair policy for Pixel devices?

Google’s original policy stated that Pixel devices with unauthorized parts would not be repaired or returned to their owners.

What changes have been made to Google’s repair policy?

The updated policy now states that devices with unauthorized parts will be returned unless health or safety concerns prevent it, in which case Google will work with the user to determine next steps.

Why did Google change its repair policy?

The policy was revised after receiving backlash for being too strict and not consumer-friendly, particularly concerning the right to repair movement.

How does the new policy handle safety concerns?

If a device is deemed unsafe to repair due to unauthorized parts, Google may not repair it but will attempt to return it to the owner or work on alternative solutions.

What is Google’s stance on third-party components in Pixel devices now?

Google’s revised policy is more lenient, acknowledging the use of third-party components and aiming to work with consumers rather than penalize them.

Highlights

  • Meta Verified subscription now available for WhatsApp Business users in India.
  • Verified badge ensures business authenticity and boosts trust.
  • New AI tools assist businesses in providing detailed product information.
  • Direct call feature to enhance communication with larger businesses.

Meta maker Mark Zuckerberg has now stated that Meta Verified, the subscription service of the company, will soon be made available to WhatsApp Business users in India.

The company’s subscription service has also been made available to WhatsApp Business users based out of Brazil, Indonesia, and Colombia apart from India.

“We’re also beginning to roll out Meta Verified on the WhatsApp Business app in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Colombia. When you see a Meta Verified badge, this means a business has registered their information with Meta,” founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg said in his remarks at the event.

“Back in April, we released a new version of Meta AI powered by our latest model Llama3. I’m excited to announce that we’re going to launch Meta AI in Portuguese next month, along with a number of other new languages. And that means that more people around the world are going to be able to ask the assistant questions across any of our apps,” he said.

He said that the vision of the firm was not just to build a single AI assistant, but also to enable lots of different AIs that can serve different purposes, including for businesses. “Any business should be able to quickly stand up an agent that can talk to your customers, provide support, and facilitate commerce,” he added.

So what is Meta Verified and why is it noteworthy?

What does Meta Verification mean, though?

The service was first launched by the creators in February 2022.

Now, the business is following up on Zuckerberg’s announcement from the Conversations Conference in Mumbai that took place last September to expand its Meta Verified to businesses on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

Now, nearly seven months after the announcement, the company is finally making Meta Verified available to businesses in India.

Meta Verified is more like a subscription package that comes with Instagram and Facebook.

It has a verified badge that authenticates the account with a government ID, proactive account security, account assistance, and more exposure and reach.

The Meta Verified symbol lets WhatsApp users know that the business they are dealing with on the app is genuine.

Therefore, the business is legitimate and the right representation is made.

In simpler terms, the Meta Verified symbol protects company owners from imitation.

As Meta explains, “When you see a Meta Verified badge, this means a business has registered their information with Meta.

Businesses using Meta Verified receive enhanced account support (including impersonation protection) and can use WhatsApp across multiple devices for their employees.”

Also, the badge will be displayed on a Meta Verified business’s WhatsApp Channel and custom WhatsApp page, adding to the business’s credibility and trustworthiness.

To complement the Meta Verified rollout, Meta has launched new AI tools to assist businesses on WhatsApp.

The tools will offer more information to users about the product being sought and answer the questions for businesses.

This feature will also be available with business ads on Facebook and Instagram.

Finally, Meta is also bringing the capability to allow people to call bigger businesses directly on WhatsApp with one tap.

This will be helpful when the requests or questions are complicated and detailed in nature, such as travel planning or opening a new account with a bank.

Meta has started testing the call feature and plans to make it available to businesses in the coming months.

Oppo F27 Pro+ Will Have IP67, IP68, and IP69 Certifications: What Does it Mean Exactly?

0
World-first smartphone with triple IP certifications (IP66, IP68, IP69)

Highlights

  • World-first smartphone with triple IP certifications (IP66, IP68, IP69)
  • Certified for SWISS SGS Premium Performance and MIL-STD-810H
  • Features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for screen protection
  • Stain-resistant leather back with siloxane coating

The Oppo F27 Pro+ is finally confirmed to arrive in India on June 13, 2024.

The brand announces some interesting information about the durability of the phone and how the model will stay strong against environmental factors.

The Oppo F27 Pro+ boasts of a world-first smartphone with three Ingress Protection (IP) certifications.

What does that mean though?

The International Electrotechnical Commission offers an IP rating, which is a standardized code that indicates how well an electronic device can resist dust, dirt, and liquids.

Let’s see what that could entail for the Oppo F27 Pro+.

What Is an IP Rating?

World-first smartphone with triple IP certifications (IP66, IP68, IP69)
World-first smartphone with triple IP certifications (IP66, IP68, IP69)

Most smartphones commonly have an IP68 rating, which makes them safe from dust and submersion in water at a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.

However, the durability factor with the Oppo F27 Pro+ combination of ratings has gone a notch higher, with the device being certified as IP66, IP68, and IP69.

An IP66 rating indicates the highest level of dust protection and regular water jets, such as those from the rain or a shower.

The IP68 rating, as stated earlier, only protects from water immersion to a certain depth and for a certain duration.

Certified for SWISS SGS Premium Performance and MIL-STD-810H
The Oppo F27 Pro+ will be the first smartphone to feature three IP ratings

The IP69 rating is the highest rating for dust and water, protecting from high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, usually used in industry.

Although it may sound confusing that there exist three different IP ratings, it is generally understood that the IP ratings are a hierarchy.

This implies that if a device has a higher IP rating, it automatically qualifies for the conditions of lower IP ratings.

For instance, an IP69-rated device should automatically have the resistance quality of IP68 and IP66 ratings.

What Does it Mean for the F27 Pro+

Features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for screen protection
Features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for screen protection

Alongside those impressive IP ratings, the Oppo F27 Pro+ is also being certified for other durability standards.

It comes with SWISS SGS Premium Performance 5 Stars Drop Resistance certification, which ensures the chassis and screen can take accidental drops.

The device also holds the MIL-STD-810H military-grade certification, which ensures protection from harsh environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, vibration, shocks, and humidity.

The Oppo F27 Pro+ will feature Gorilla Glass Victus 2 by Corning for the screen for protection against scratches and daily wear and tear.

From the design point of view, Oppo does not hold back on durability.

The F27 Pro+ will have a leather back with a siloxane coating, which is stain-resistant—a welcome add-on to a device that is looking to last.

Is this the most durable and weather-proof phone from Oppo?

The company claims to position the F27 Pro+ as a smartphone that can withstand various environmental challenges, making it an attractive option for consumers, especially during the upcoming monsoon season in India.

Even so, we would be remiss to say that perhaps it would not be the best of ideas to use your phone without any adding a case to it.

TRAI Urges Mobile Users to Report Fraudulent Disconnection Messages

TRAI Urges Mobile Users to Report Fraudulent Disconnection Messages
The proposal aims to promote efficient use of numbering resources

Highlights

  • TRAI clarifies it does not send disconnection messages.
  • Users urged to report fraudulent messages via Sanchar Saathi platform.
  • Fraudsters using fake TRAI notices for scams.
  • Victims can report cybercrimes through the 1930 helpline.

The telecom regulator, TRAI, has urged mobile users to report fraudulent calls, text messages, or WhatsApp messages from third-party agencies claiming to be the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and threatening disconnections.

On Thursday, TRAI clarified that it “does not initiate communications regarding mobile number disconnection through messages or official notices.”

TRAI also stated it has “not authorized any third-party agency to contact customers for such purposes.”

“These notices falsely allege illegal activity associated with the recipient’s mobile number and pressure them into contacting law enforcement or face service termination.”

TRAI Urges Mobile Users to Report Fraudulent Disconnection Messages

In a statement, the TRAI said it is “not related to any messages regarding the disconnection of any telephone numbers.”

It also clarified that no third-party agency has been appointed to act on its behalf.

Because of this, the TRAI said such calls or messages or any official communications should be treated as a possible fraudulent attempt, either for disconnection or otherwise.

Citizens are advised to report such messages by using the telecom department’s Chakshu facility available on its Sanchar Saathi online platform.

TRAI also appealed to the citizens to report such messages to prevent misuse of the telecom resources for cyber-crime and financial fraud.

How Fraudsters Are Operating

The regulator has also disclosed that the fraudsters behind such instances are using forged notices that look exactly like official communications from senior officers of TRAI.

The rest of the specs suggest the Galaxy Watch Ultra has a bigger battery, with a similar brightness and water resistance up to 100 meters, compared to the rumored Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is rumoured to have an aerospace-grade Titanium chassis, often claimed to be Grade 5, which is higher than the rumored Grade 4 Titanium of the Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Apart from that, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is also said to have more storage on board compared to the Galaxy Watch Ultra.

However, both watches are expected to support L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS for accurate location tracking.

Another rumour about the Watch 7 Ultra is that there should be a dedicated Quick Button for quick actions, apart from the Home and Back buttons.

The standard Watch 7 is likely to only sport the Home and Back buttons.

The Watch Ultra’s body is also supposed to be made of Armor Aluminium 2, whereas the standard Watch 7 is also going to have a sapphire crystal glass display.

Both watches could be MIL-STD-810H certified for durability, but the Watch Ultra could offer slightly better water resistance with 10ATM+ IP68 compared to the 5ATM+ IP68 of the Watch 7.

Netflix Tests New TV App Design: Bigger Boxes and Streamlined Menus

Highlights

  • New design replaces small square pictures with larger, more informative boxes.
  • Trailers now play inside the enlarged boxes when hovered over.
  • Simplified menu system with top row navigation: search, home, shows, movies, My Netflix.
  • “My Netflix” feature offers personalized recommendations based on viewing history.

Netflix is making big changes to how its TV app looks.

They are testing a new design for the homepage, as per a report from The Verge.

Here’s what you should know about it

The new look is very different from the old one.

Instead of little square pictures for shows and films, there will be bigger boxes.

When you point at a box with your remote, it will get bigger to show you more information.

At the moment, when you hover over a title, a trailer plays at the top of the screen.

But with the new design, the trailer will play inside the bigger box itself.

You won’t need to look up to see it.

Customers were reportedly performing “eye gymnastics” looking around to different parts of the home screen in an attempt to find a show or movie to watch, so Netflix wanted to simplify the navigation experience. “We really wanted members to have an easier time figuring out if a title is right for them,” Netflix senior director of product Pat Flemming told The Verge.

Emma Roth, writing for The Verge: Netflix is testing a big homepage redesign on its TV app. The new look replaces the static tiles containing the shows and movies you want to watch with boxes that extend as soon as your remote lands on them.

That’s not the only thing Netflix is changing about its look. The refresh gets rid of the menu that pops out from the left side of Netflix’s homepage and replaces it with a more streamlined selection of options at the top of your screen: search, home, shows, movies, and My Netflix.

New UI Changes

The bigger boxes will also show details like the year the show came out, how many episodes there are, and what type of programme it is.

All this information will be easy to see without having to read small writing.

Netflix boss Pat Flemming said the changes should make it easier to decide if you want to watch something.

He said people often have to move their eyes around a lot with the current design.

As well as the bigger boxes, Netflix is changing the menu system too.

Instead of the menu popping out from the side, there will be a row of simple options at the top: search, home, shows, movies and My Netflix.

That’s a pretty streamlined approach from earlier on where the interface was pretty cluttered.

The My Netflix part is new and will suggest programmes for you based on what you’ve watched before.

Some of the old menu options like Categories are being removed to make it simpler and should makes titles easier to find.

Flemming said this is just their first try at improving the TV app experience.

He hopes it will work well and then they can make it available to most Netflix members in the coming months.

YouTube Implements New Restrictions and Bans on Gun-Related Videos

YouTube Implements New Restrictions and Bans on Gun-Related Videos

Highlights

  • Homemade Guns Age-Restricted: Videos showing homemade guns restricted to viewers 18+.
  • Total Ban on Security Device Bypass Videos: Complete removal of videos on bypassing gun locks or safes.
  • Exemptions for Public Interest Content: News reports, documentaries, and military footage remain allowed.
  • Platform Safety Focus: Steps taken to curb dangerous weapon manufacturing content.

YouTube has announced a slew of new major rules that will bring in restrictions and bans on some sorts of gun-related videos running on the platform.

Some gun videos will now have new age limits, while others will become completely prohibited.

“YouTube age-restricting gun content is a step in the right direction,” acknowledges TTP Director Katie Paul. However, she emphasizes the importance of effective implementation: “It’s unclear why the company waited so long to address this issue.”

In a statement to Engadget, YouTube spokesperson Javier Hernandez wrote: “These updates to our firearms policy are part of our continued efforts to maintain policies that reflect the current state of content on YouTube. For example, 3D printing has become more readily available in recent years so we’re expanding our restrictions on content involving homemade firearms. We regularly review our guidelines and consult with outside experts to make sure we are drawing the line at the right place.”

“We have heard firsthand from young individuals that YouTube’s algorithm is driving them to the world of illegal and 3D-printed firearms, which is having a direct impact on the safety of Manhattanites,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement emailed to reporters.

Any YouTube videos showing how to make homemade guns or automatic weapons at home will now be age-restricted and blocked from viewers under the age of 18 years.

Young people will not be able to access this potentially dangerous content.

To be even more strict, YouTube will introduce a total ban on any videos about how to remove or bypass security devices like gun locks or safes.

There will be no exceptions – such videos will be completely removed from the site.

This is intended to prevent the availability of content that may be a guide to illegal weapon modifications or manufacture, the latter especially as 3D printing technology becomes more readily available.

Weighing Open Public Interest Content

YouTube clarifies that the policy would have no bearing on video game content, movies, or other fictional artistic content that depicts guns.

Exemptions for videos made with public interest in mind, like news reports, documentaries, or footage from military or law enforcement sources, would still be allowed, however.

The company said it had worked with outside experts on violence prevention on the new guidance.

A Step, Anyways, Toward Platform Safety

Exemptions for Public Interest Content: News reports, documentaries, and military footage remain allowed

Though the new controls on gun videos are seen as a step in the right direction, some find it almost disingenuous that a response to the problem raised last year has taken so long.

As with anything YouTube, enforcement of the policy will be key when there’s a library of content as large as it has amassed.

Most would agree, however, that any step to curb the spread of possibly dangerous information about weapon manufacturing is a smart one when it comes to making a platform safer, especially for young audiences.

As pervasive as YouTube is, it does indeed hold a stake in society.
