India’s Atmanirbhar campaign gets wings with PLI scheme

The government’s recent announcement on PLI scheme has the potential to be a big milestone for Indian industries and businesses. The policies will provide a boost to the manufacturing sector, however, the role of technology, digitization and innovation will be the key differentiator in driving Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. This and more was discussed at a special webinar organized by FCC on ‘Self- Reliant India- Role of IT & Telecom’ with leading business leaders from the industry including Dr Ajai Chowdhry, Founder, HCL, Chairman Electronics Sector Skills Council & FICCI Start-up Committee, Jagdish Mitra, Chief Strategy Officer & Head of Growth, Tech Mahindra & Executive Council Member, Nasscom, Amit Marwah, Head of Marketing & Corporate Affairs, Nokia India, Sandeep Aggarwal, Chairman of Telecom Export Promotion Council (TEPC) under Telecom Ministry and Telecom Committee Chief, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Arvind Bali, CEO- Telecom Sector Skill Council.

The Indian economy and job market are expected to take a big leap with the Modi government’s Production Linked Incentive scheme announced for 13 sectors. As per a report, local manufacturing may add $520 billion to India’s GDP in the next five years. The role of IT and telecom have been a crucial one during the pandemic and going forward as well, the role of digital transformation will be vital and the indigenous technology in telecom will propel self-reliance (Atmanirbhar).

Talking about the scope of job creation through PLI scheme, Arvind Bali, CEO- Telecom Sector Skill Council, said, “India has been addressing the issue of jobs by connecting industry’s job requirements and also with the government’s initiative of Skill India in a big way. Now with PLI in telecom hardware, we estimate it will create one million jobs in a very short period of time. And in these segments, we were skilling around 1.5 million people and now we expect we will skill around 5 million in a period of 2 years. Also, manufacturing jobs is one part but additionally, it going to be about Industry 4.0, so a lot of jobs will be created around digital and these jobs will precious and we believe it will change the overall scenario for Indian youth in the world.”

Amit Marwah, Head of Marketing & Corporate Affairs, Nokia India, opined, “The PLI scheme will boost telecom manufacturing in India, however, there are certain things to be taken care of. The biggest catalyst is the telecom equipment ecosystem. A focus on the FAB industry is required, we still have to import a lot of telecom components to manufacture in India. India needs to create more opportunities and the local market is not going to be enough, India needs to expand export opportunities and India needs to improve on logistics, end-user certification. On PLI, the government needs to give recognition to the players who invest in India and provide them market access especially in the government sector.”

“It is very heartening to see the government allocating additional funds for expansion and strengthening of telecom and IT network in remote and unconnected areas. Improving broadband connectivity in villages through expansion of BharatNet will give a much-needed push to Digital India initiative. It will help the government in making a strong, self-reliant India. Though the government’s decision on the PLI scheme and relaxation in norms will boost investments in the infrastructure sector, the government needs to focus on promoting domestic industry and manufacturers. The government needs to incentivise and support Indian companies so that they can meet domestic demands and gear up for challenges internationally,” said Sandeep Aggarwal, Chairman of Telecom Export Promotion Council (TEPC).

The production-linked incentive scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing serves the purpose of providing incentives to producers. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman declared Rs 1.97 trillion worth of sops as part of the PLI scheme in the Union Budget 2021-22 this year for over the next 5 years which will be in addition to the Rs 40,951 crore announced for the PLI for electronic manufacturing schemes. The approved production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth Rs 12,195 crore will be for telecom equipment manufacturing

Talking about 5G, Dr Ajai Chowdhry, added, “The government needs to look at spectrum sale very differently as it is essential infrastructure, as important as water. We need to provide broadband as a fundamental right. The cost of delivering broadband has to be brought down. The fastest way to deliver it is through 5G and there is opportunity for telecom companies to look at manufacturing locally for 5G.”

Speaking on the same issue, Amit Marwah added, “It is a proven technology and India is ready for 5G as well. If we don’t take the call soon we will be late. If it happens in 3 months, we are ready to provide the requirements of the industry.”

Robochamp

Robochamp is an edtech startup dedicated to introducing kids to early AI education which includes courses like robotics and coding. It’s founded by Akshay Ahuja with interest to provide children in rural India with resources and access to learn robotics and coding in their own language. The courses are available in Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. The company will be providing free courses to kids in the age group of six to 17 living in rural areas. The company has decided to enter into the vernacular segment owing to a sudden surge in the number of inquiries from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India post the launch of its English online courses. With less than a month of the launch of their English online courses, they received 3 million footfalls to their website. Now, with the launch of their Hindi and vernacular courses, the numbers are continuously increasing. The startup has been operating in a B2B offline classroom model and has a successful record in mentoring and teaching early geniuses in the field of robotics.

Toppr Codr

Created by the graduates of MIT and IIT, it includes adaptive and self-paced modules for children to learn coding at home. From basic to advanced level of coding, the children in between the age group 6-18 are free to learn from the platform based on their preferences. Toppr being one of the leading learning platforms in the country came up with Toppr Codr, as the name suggests which is centric to learning coding for children. Zishaan Hayath, CEO of Toppr said in the world driven by technology it is important for children to learn through the methods of challenging, fun and engaging methods for the future workforce and it is the need of the hour for the pivotal change in the technologically-driven industry. It has advanced technologies ranging from block-based to actual text-based coding platforms such as App Lab, Thunkable, Java, Arduino, and React Native along with Python for ML/AI, etc. The venture claims that it is a valuable real-time extension beyond the regular school curriculum, helping bring skills needed to excel in the fourth industrial revolution to the students of K-12 education.

Vedantu Super Coders

The edtech startup, co-founded by Vamsi Krishna, came up with a separate program specific to coding which is aimed at providing high-quality coding programs for kids of 6-12 years of age, with the idea that coding does not only improves a child’s reasoning and problem-solving skills, but allows the mind to develop in a broader way. This program is taken by coding experts in the field of AI and machine learning. The curriculum is divided into different categories for different age groups for a better understanding. These courses also involve a wide range of topics such as creating animations, commercial-ready apps and games, creating advanced games and chatbots using artificial intelligence and Python, IoT and more, where children can choose their preferences based on their interests. It delivers customized learning based on student’s learning pace and has been designed by experts from MIT and IIT, and promotes activity-based learning.

Tanla’s DLT platform Trubloq built to enforce TRAI regulation

Tanla Platforms Limited said today that the company is supporting enterprises in meeting the TCCCPR requirement to register content templates with the telecom regulator to ensure a smooth flow of commercial communication between businesses and their customers.

Trubloq, Tanla’s blockchain-based stack was built to solve the unsolicited commercial communication is in accordance with the TRAI Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR). The SMS and OTPs, when sent by enterprises are checked against the templates pre-registered by them on this blockchain platform.

Trubloq enforces regulatory requirements by empowering customers and enabling enterprises and regulators in curbing the menace of spam calls and messages. Customers can own, control, and manage commercial communication directed to them, safeguarding themselves from fraudulent SMS and calls. Enterprises that have registered their content templates enable an ecosystem of trust by making certain all commercial communication to their customers is safe from fraud and is delivered on time without any delays.

Government Should Establish a Robust Regulatory Mechanism for Cryptocurrency Ecosystem: IAMAI

India’s leading Cryptocurrency players, represented by IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India) welcomed the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s comments that the government will take a “calibrated” approach to crypto trading and “negotiations and discussions” are going on with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on how to regulate cryptocurrency in India.

Appreciating the positive development, IAMAI today appealed to the Government of India not to ban cryptocurrency, proposing to develop robust mechanisms to regulate the ecosystem. Cryptocurrency has been generating jobs across a variety of functions — legal, compliance, tech, marketing, business development, finance, etc. — in India and abroad. Given the scale and diversity, the good governance and regulation of the cryptocurrency ecosystem in India is critical and will give impetus to Government of India’s Digital India vision.

According to IAMAI, “The crypto community consists of over 10 Million crypto holders holding over $1 Billion worth crypto assets, 300+ startups generating tens of thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and taxes. There’s a daily trading volume of $350 Million – $500 Million.” Therefore, IAMAI said, “The proposed move to ban will have an adverse impact and will lead to loss in investments and hit 10 million Indian crypto customers. Hence, we are urging the government to define the cryptocurrency regulation framework after due consultation with IAMAI and stakeholders such as India crypto-asset user groups and the exchanges that facilitate buying and selling.” 

The Government of India has listed the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021 for introduction, consideration and passing in the current session of Parliament. Under the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021, reports indicate that India probably aims to launch its own digital currency i.e. Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). This measure will be in line with many central banks which have begun planning to issue their own digital currencies.

Nishith Desai, Founder, Nishith Desai Associates said, “US, Japan and other developed countries have a positive outlook towards crypto and are considering setting up of regulations for crypto”. Mr. Desai further added “India should develop balanced and positive crypto regulations that will both ensure consumer protection as well as lead to more startups building in blockchain, more jobs, wealth creation for investors, and more tax revenue for the government. All types of crypto-asset activity should be encouraged, both government and private. We’re confident that our government will take notice of this technology and its potential to contribute to our $5 Trillion economy vision.”

Members of IAMAI, while welcoming the Finance Minister’s statement, voiced their opinion and apprehensions against the proposed ban of cryptocurrency.

Naveen Surya, Chairman, Fintech Convergence Council and Chairman Emeritus of Payments Council of India (PCI) said, “Through AML/CFT and KYC related compliances, the government can ensure a safe and secure crypto market for investors. As India develops its CBDC, the regulatory framework can also define the bridge between the proposed digital INR and public blockchain cryptocurrencies from a forex standpoint”.

Sumit Gupta, CEO & Co-founder, CoinDCX said, “India is at a threshold of a fintech breakthrough. India already has 560 million online users today. In FY20 alone, India as a country registered over 21 billion digital transactions. The government sees this and understands the potential of the digital economy. Recently the FM expressed her view which reflected the government’s maturity and progressive attitude towards the crypto sector.” Mr. Gupta further added, “One must understand, the crypto industry in India is home grown, with entrepreneurs who come from premier institutes. Those who are invested in crypto are people who understand internet and do their research well. Imagine 20% of our clientele consist of women who come mostly from Tier-1 & Tier2 Cities. On the other hand, like all other fintechs we too understand the value of investor education, infrastructure security, insurance, and strict KYC controls in place, and have used this understanding as a basis to work on a self-regulatory framework as well.”

According to you what is the future of NVMe Technology?

With our lives increasingly taking the digital route, our demands from our PCs are only increasing. We are constantly in search of better storage solutions to match the growth in our personal and professional content. NVMe technology helps boost the read and write speeds of our storage devices, allowing us to do more at faster speeds and at improved efficiency. Until recently, SSDs were based on SATA technology for data transfer which was primarily designed for HDDs. The transition from SATA to NVMe has been growing rapidly and you would see that more and more PCs are now coming with NVMe slots. The change has started to reflect with consumers now realizing the true potential of NVMe technology.

Western Digital has been a pioneer in integrating NVMe technology in both internal and portable SSD portfolios. The consumer experience and evolving demands have been well catered to with NVMe based solutions and we see this only growing from here.

 

What are the changing trends in personal storage?

The use of virtual platforms has become our new outing, while remote working has become the norm. Be it family get-togethers, office farewells, or even school annual days, people are sharing their life moments and creating memories on virtual platforms. Thus, it would be safe to say that we are currently amidst a data explosion.

PC users are upgrading their PCs for a better experience to SSDs from HDDs. Our WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD is an internal SSD that upgrades your PC and improves performance.

Another trend that we have seen is consumer behavior towards data backup. With data being generated at an exponential rate, taking regular backups has now become a must. How has COVID-19 changed consumer behavior from the perspective of content creation and consumption?

Be it work, learning, shopping, entertainment or simply challenging a friend to a game- we have become accustomed to the virtual way of life. Several individuals have become content creators and bloggers and many have resorted to gaming as their passion.

As per reports, we interact with more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data, including images, high definition videos, apps, etc on an average every day. In this changing environment, we are witnessing a huge surge in user-generated content that is engaging audiences across various social platforms. We also see the content formats evolving to voice and video from texts and graphics. Another noteworthy change has been the video-led interactions for work-from-home and study-from-home environments. OTT content consumption was another key highlight for most of us in the lockdown phase which drives massive content generation. These trends put together fuel the growth of data and, therefore, increase storage requirements.

 

How important is the gaming segment for Western Digital?

The Indian gaming sector has been growing tremendously. During the pandemic, we saw an increasing interest in PC and mobile gaming. With one of the youngest populations, India is expected to be among the top gaming markets globally.

While India is a mobile-first market even in the aspect of gaming, many individuals are switching to PC gaming to enjoy a wholesome experience.

Our ‘Next-Gen Indian PC Gamer’ survey revealed that along with having a good graphic card to support high graphic games, having enough storage space is essential for gamers for faster upload time. As per the survey, 57% of the gamers stated that slow storage leads to a poor gaming experience. The survey further revealed that two in every five gamers had to make tough choices of deleting their favorite games due to lack of storage space so that they could have a better gaming experience. These findings inflict the need for fast and high-performing storage solutions that provide you with an immersive experience.
