OpenAI’s Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive are reportedly joining forces to embark on an AI hardware project.
This initiative, which combines Altman’s expertise in AI and Ive’s iconic design prowess, might just bring about OpenAI’s first consumer electronics product shifting its focus as a SaaS company.
As per a report from Bloomberg, central to this endeavour is the involvement of Tang Tan, an outgoing Apple executive who has joined Ive’s independent design venture, LoveFrom.
Tan will lead the hardware engineering team here, leveraging his vast experience in product design, particularly from his tenure as Apple’s vice president of iPhone and watch product design.
Tan’s departure is a worrying trend for Apple that started in 2019 since Ive departed from the company.
As per reports, approximately 14 members of Ive’s former team have also left the company.
This shift has significantly impacted Apple’s design team, leading to a reorganization under Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
This collaboration between Ive and Altman can be one of the most ambitious projects since Ive left Apple in 2019.
The team, focusing on hiring talent and creating concepts, is exploring AI devices for home use, among other possibilities.
The project is still in its conceptual stages, with both hardware and software components being developed concurrently.
Jony Ive’s LoveFrom has established itself as a powerhouse in design consultancy, attracting high-profile clients like Airbnb Inc., Ferrari NV, and Moncler SpA.
Despite ending a three-year consulting relationship with Apple in 2022, LoveFrom continues to draw talent from Apple, with more than 20 former employees joining Ive’s firm.
The project faces its share of challenges, notably from other ventures in the AI space.
One such is Humane’s “AI pin,” a screenless wearable device integrating OpenAI’s GPT-4 AI model, which aims to reduce screen time and possibly replace smartphones.
Sam Altman himself is an investor in Humane, which is going to start shipping the AI Pin from March next year.
Despite its innovative approach, the AI pin has faced criticism for its clunky design and inaccurate responses in demonstrations, highlighting the complexities of creating seamless AI-integrated hardware.

Humane announced that the AI Pin, introduced in November, will begin shipping in March 2024.
This follows the start of preorders in mid-November, marking a significant step forward in wearable technology.
The Humane AI Pin boasts a compact, portable design with a magnetic attachment feature. Key functionalities include a projection system for displaying information, voice command operation, and a 13 MP camera with gesture recognition and touchpad capabilities.
The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, enhanced with motion sensors to improve user interaction and experience, emphasizing its advanced technological foundation.
The AI Pin is designed to be a non-intrusive, yet fully functional wearable technology. It aligns with Humane’s vision of reducing reliance on traditional smartphones, offering a seamless and integrated tech experience.
Sam Altman was unexpectedly dismissed as CEO of OpenAI, a decision that surprised him and led to several key resignations within the company, including President Greg Brockman.
Following his firing, Altman received an overwhelming number of messages, causing technical issues with his iPhone, including a temporary crash of the iMessage app.
OpenAI’s board provided vague explanations for Altman’s firing, mentioning a lack of candor in his communications, but failed to offer a detailed justification.
Following intense internal turmoil and intervention by Microsoft, Sam Altman was reinstated as CEO of OpenAI, accompanied by a complete overhaul of the company’s board.
Altman’s reinstatement followed a phase of internal discord and rapid leadership changes, climaxing with employee dissent and a demand for transparency about his initial firing. These factors pushed the board to reconsider their decision and bring Altman back.
