Apple’s First Foldable iPhone to Feature Side-Button Touch ID, Tipped for 2026 Launch

0
Apple foldable iPhone concept with side-button Touch ID

Highlights

  • Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reaffirms that Apple’s foldable iPhone will use side-button Touch ID, not in-display or Face ID.
  • It is expected to feature a book-style fold with a 7.8″ internal and 5.5″ external screen, the device aims for a slim 4.5mm profile and has a crease-free display from Samsung.
  • The price range will reportedly be between $2,000–$2,500 with mass production tipped for H2 2026 and a possible launch in the fall.

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold, is expected to debut in late 2026 as per recent reports. Speculations have been buzzing around the model for quite some time, but it looks like we finally have some confirmation about a key feature. According to well-known Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device is unlikely to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Apple iPhone Fold – Fingerprint Sensor

Back in March, Kuo predicted that Apple would integrate Touch ID into the side button of the foldable iPhone instead of relying on Face ID. In a fresh update shared by Kuo @mingchikuo on X (formerly Twitter), Kuo has reiterated this claim.

“Six months ago, I predicted the foldable iPhone would use side-button Touch ID,” he wrote. Addressing rumours of an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader, he added, “There are now market rumors that it will adopt an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, but I think that’s unlikely. It’s expected that Luxshare ICT will supply the side-button Touch ID module for the foldable iPhone.”

The choice of Touch ID is not entirely new for Apple, as the company has already used side-button fingerprint authentication in the iPad Air and iPad mini. Cost efficiency is another factor. Implementing Face ID would require two separate sensors for both the outer and inner displays, while a single side-mounted Touch ID sensor is far more economical.

While Apple has patents for embedding Touch ID and Face ID under the display, this technology is not expected to make its way into the first-generation foldable iPhone.

Apple iPhone Fold – What Else We Know?

Kuo’s earlier forecast suggested that the iPhone Fold will adopt a book-style design with a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen, carrying an expected price tag between $2,000 and $2,500.

He also noted that Apple may avoid Face ID to conserve internal space, as the device is expected to be just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, too slim to house the TrueDepth module.

The company is said to have prioritised perfecting the foldable screen design. Reports indicate Apple waited until its display partner Samsung could deliver a panel with an almost invisible crease, something achieved earlier this year.

On the camera front, Kuo expects the iPhone Fold to include a dual-lens rear setup along with front-facing cameras for both folded and unfolded modes. Both Kuo and analyst Jeff Pu anticipate mass production in the second half of 2026, while Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested that the launch could take place as early as fall 2026.

FAQs

Q1. Will the iPhone Fold feature in-display fingerprint authentication?

Answer. No, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to use side-button Touch ID instead of an in-display fingerprint sensor or Face ID, citing cost and space efficiency.

Q2. What are the expected design and display specs of the iPhone Fold?

Answer. The device is tipped to have a book-style fold with a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen. When unfolded, it may be just 4.5mm thick, making it too slim to house Face ID hardware.

Q3. When is the iPhone Fold expected to launch?

Answer. Mass production is anticipated in the second half of 2026. While Kuo and Jeff Pu suggest late 2026, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hints at a possible launch in fall 2026.

BGMI Creator Krafton to Invest $50 Million Annually in India with New Acquisitions and Game Development Plans

Highlights

  • Krafton will invest $50 million yearly in India, focusing on game development and strategic acquisitions to deepen its local footprint.
  • India is now one of Krafton’s top five global markets, contributing 10% of its revenue.
  • Krafton aims to replicate BGMI’s success with new titles, despite hurdles like cautious spending and past bans.

South Korean gaming powerhouse behind PUBG and Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Krafton is preparing a major expansion in India. According to reports, the company aims to invest $50 million every year in the Indian market, alongside pursuing new acquisitions to strengthen its local presence. Before we get to the details, let’s start by understanding India’s current gaming market.

India’s Gaming Boom

India’s gaming sector is witnessing explosive growth. Reports suggest that the country had over 444 million gamers in 2024, marking a 12% increase compared to the previous year. While the industry is still smaller than South Korea’s, its growth trajectory is massive.

New government regulations supporting esports and non-wagering online games are also expected to accelerate the sector’s expansion. This will also provide Krafton with more opportunities to scale its gaming ecosystem in the country.

Krafton’s Investment Strategy in India

This isn’t Krafton’s first big push in the region. The company has already invested nearly $200 million in various Indian digital platforms, making India one of its fastest-growing and most important markets outside South Korea.

Earlier this year, Krafton acquired a cricket game developer named Nautilus Mobile for $14 million. It also backed the fintech firm CashFree Payments with a $53 million funding round, showing the brand’s diversified investment strategy in India beyond just gaming.

Krafton’s Long-Term Vision

India is already among Krafton’s top five global markets, contributing nearly 10% of its overall revenue. With BGMI at the core of its success, Krafton is now focused on replicating that impact with new titles and strategic acquisitions.

By committing $50 million annually, Krafton has made it clear that India is not just another growth market but a key pillar of its global strategy. The company aims to use its financial muscle, innovative game development, and strong local partnerships to shape the future of gaming in India.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Krafton’s BGMI has been a massive hit in India with over 200 million registered users, but the company acknowledges that creating another blockbuster won’t be easy. PUBG Mobile, which launched in India in 2018 and was banned in 2020 over national security concerns, forced Krafton to rethink how it launches and operates games in the country.

The company believes Indian gamers present a unique challenge, while they are often cautious about spending money and also demonstrate strong loyalty to games they connect with.

FAQs

Q1. How much is Krafton planning to invest in India?

Answer. Krafton will invest $50 million annually in India to support game development, strategic acquisitions, and expansion of its gaming ecosystem.

Q2. Why is India important to Krafton’s global strategy?

Answer. India is one of Krafton’s top five global markets, contributing nearly 10% of its revenue. With 444M+ gamers and a young population, it offers massive growth potential.

Q3. What challenges does Krafton face in India?

Answer. While BGMI has over 200M users, Krafton faces hurdles like cautious spending habits and past bans. Still, it sees strong loyalty and long-term opportunity among young gamers.

As per the report, the victim was scrolling through her Facebook feed when she encountered an advertisement that appeared to be from Flipkart. On clicking it, she was redirected to a mobile landing page designed to look exactly like Flipkart’s official website.

The fraudulent page showcased a too-good-to-be-true offer, a Saffola oil pack worth around ₹800 listed as the “deal of the day” for just ₹219. Tempted by the massive discount, she proceeded to complete the purchase through UPI. However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the website’s actual URL was https://rakhispecialviral-offer-sound.shop, a domain exposed via Facebook’s in-app browser.

Despite being fake, the site is still active and mimics Flipkart’s interface convincingly.

Payments Processed Through Cashfree Gateway

The fake platform lists only four to five products and each has a “Buy Now” button, which redirects users to a payment page supported by Cashfree Payments, a well-known payment aggregator.

This raises serious questions about how such a suspicious domain, without even the Flipkart name, was able to process transactions through an official payment gateway.

The report further highlights that the fraudulent site remains live, continues to accept payments, and is tricking users in real time. A recording of the full checkout process was also shared, urging Cashfree to block the merchant and initiate refunds for affected customers.

Warning for Shoppers

With scams like these on the rise, online shoppers are advised to be extra cautious, especially when elderly family members are using social media platforms. As TheTechOutlook report notes, “As technology advances, cybercrime will also continue to evolve.”

The publication confirmed that it has reached out to Cashfree Payments for clarification on this issue but has not yet received a response.

WhatsApp has rolled out a crucial security fix for a vulnerability in its iOS and Mac apps that was actively exploited to compromise the devices of “specific targeted users.

The flaw tracked as CVE-2025-55177 has now been patched, according to a security advisory from the Meta-owned platform. Apple had already addressed a related bug, identified as CVE-2025-43300, which was used in combination with the WhatsApp exploit as part of what the company described as a “very sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Donncha Ó Cearbhaill, head of Amnesty International’s Security Lab, revealed that the campaign lasted for nearly 90 days starting late May and involved an “advanced spyware operation.” One of the exploited flaws enabled a zero-click attack allowing hackers to compromise devices without any interaction from the victim.

Ó Cearbhaill further explained that the attack chain leveraged WhatsApp as a delivery method to steal sensitive data from iPhones including personal messages. WhatsApp has since issued warning notifications to affected users, though the identities of the attackers or spyware vendors behind the campaign remain unknown

Meanwhile, Meta spokesperson Margarita Franklin confirmed to TechCrunch that the vulnerability had been patched “a few weeks ago” and fewer than 200 WhatsApp users were notified. However, she declined to provide details on who was behind the operation.

This is not the first time WhatsApp has been targeted in government-linked spyware operations. In May, a U.S. court ordered Israeli spyware company NSO Group to pay WhatsApp $167 million in damages over its 2019 Pegasus spyware campaign, which infected more than 1,400 devices.

Earlier in 2024, WhatsApp also blocked a spyware campaign that targeted about 90 individuals, including journalists and civil society members in Italy. While the Italian government denied involvement, spyware maker Paragon later suspended Italy’s access to its surveillance tools.
