The future seems promising for gaming and esports industry in India: GMNG Product Head

0

The growth of the Indian video game market has been ever-evolving and has surpassed all expectations. Homegrown GMNG is one such leading platform that hosts esports tournaments and real money games, with an aim to provide players an opportunity to participate in tournaments. It also hosts a variety of skill-based short format games for users to match their skills against each other and win real cash prizes. Ramesh Kumar Raja talks to Aakash Taneja, Head of Product at GMNG, to discuss the online gaming scenario and the platform’s acceptance in India. Excerpts:

Please tell us about your journey and experiences in the Indian video games and esports industry.

Building products has always excited me professionally. I would admit that I do have an undying love for games. I feel probably this is what pushed me to enter the gaming industry. I studied, read a lot, and gathered knowledge about the online gaming industry, its present landscape, the global as well as the Indian scenario, the future growth, etc. This is when I noticed that quite a few gaps exist in the industry in terms of overlapping between esports and real money games as well as the lack of opportunities for short format real money games. I wanted to bridge these gaps to ensure the sector could witness unprecedented growth. I wish to achieve these goals via GMNG and I am hoping it will emerge to be the go-to platform for the quickest real money gaming formats in the coming years.

What do you feel about the growth that the nation’s video game market has had over the years? What would you say have been some of the biggest benefactors behind it?

The growth of the Indian video game market has been ever-evolving and has surpassed all expectations. The easy availability of smartphones and accessibility of data have pushed the segment’s growth amongst the masses. As a result, even our youth and the millennial generation have become akin to the concept of competitive gaming. They are now open to exploring innovative ways of monetisation of content while pursuing their passion for gaming. These factors have collaboratively acted as a catalyst for the growth trajectory of the video gaming market in the country.

“The easy availability of smartphones and accessibility of data have pushed the segment’s growth amongst the masses. As a result, even our youth and the millennial generation have become akin to the concept of competitive gaming. They are now open to exploring innovative ways of monetisation of content while pursuing their passion for gaming”

Tell us a bit about your platform, GMNG. What were the visions and expectations that went behind its formation?

GMNG is a leading online gaming platform hosting esports tournaments and real money games. We aim at providing players an opportunity for users to participate in esports tournaments and leverage our existing brand relations to monetise these events for both the communities as well as the players. We also host a variety of skill-based real money short format games on our platform for players to match their skills against each other and win real cash prizes.

What is noteworthy is that in just a short span of time, we have been able to earn 150k+ registered users and we are elated that we have received great feedback about our platform. The traction at GMNG seems immensely promising so far. We have noticed a 3x MoM increase in users over the last 3 months, majority driven organically. This is indicative of the fact that our platform is growing at a significant pace and will continue to flourish in the times ahead as well.

We are hoping to add value to both the esports and real-money gaming markets in the times to come. As far as the esports segment is concerned, we believe that we can help streamline the way esports tournaments are organised by productising audiences for different esports organisations. We are looking forward to partnering with some renowned brands for the same. For the real money gaming market, we are already offering the shortest format of real money games in India and we will continue to deliver the same along with offering innovations to the players.

A career in video games is often looked down upon in India, and there is a great disparity between how people see esports, as opposed to how they see traditional sports. Do you feel this gap will shorten, and video games will be seen as a more mainstream sporting event, especially when esports is finally considered a medal event in the Asian Games 2022?

It’s true that there was disparity but the situation is now changing. As the online gaming industry is booming, I would say that it’s just a matter of time when viewership levels will match traditional sports. As they say- ‘Money follows eyeballs’, the industry will earn greater revenues, and traditional sports as well as esports, video games, etc. will coexist in the times to come. Neither can overpower the other as both conventional and new-age sports activities come with their differentiating features.

I would also like to add and bring to notice the fact that a career in video games is not only merely restricted to playing games. A plethora of other employment opportunities are also available in this domain such as game developers, game designers, game animators, GFX/VFX artists, Casting & Organising tournaments, etc.

Talking about the Asian games 2022, I feel that esports being considered as a medal event in the prestigious gaming platform will definitely render a helping hand in ensuring that it is considered as an authentic and credible gaming activity as well as a viable career option.

On which title does GMNG see the highest number of community participation? What would you say is the reason behind that?

We witness the highest number of community participation from our esports titles- BGMI and Freefire. The major reason for this is because multiplayer battle royale games led to the initiation of the esports wave and are still the most prevalent genre in esports.

On the real money gaming side, Mini-Ludo is our best seller. The sole reason for this popularity is because of its super-quick gameplay. A game of Mini-Ludo is less than 3 minutes which usually takes up to 15 minutes on a normal game.

Where do you see the Indian video games and esports industry in the next five years? Do you feel the gap between PC and mobile esports will lessen when it comes to popularity?

The future of the Indian video gaming and esports industry seems promising. It is anticipated that the projections will go as much as 4x by 2025 which suggests that the segment is bracing for an exponential growth ahead.

I believe the gap between PC and mobile games will shorten as users have now got a taste of competitive gaming through mobile and as PC gaming can offer customisations, immersive gaming experiences, and high-level graphics, these users will soon start to explore the PC gaming universe. Plus with cloud gaming around the corner, games will eventually become platform agnostic.

Plus with cloud gaming around the corner, games will eventually become platform agnostic”

One of the major issues that video gamers face today, is that they are often not able to monetize their craft effectively. What advice would you give budding gamers who want to make a career in either esports or video game content creation?

As mentioned earlier, there are many career prospects that can be explored in the online gaming industry. I would recommend the aspirants to shed their inhibitions and be open to experimenting with the available options. They should double down on the role they enjoy the most and eventually and gradually figure out the one they are the best at and can excel in.

What would you say are some of the biggest problems that the Indian esports market faces today? What according to you are some of the viable solutions to counter it?

The Indian esports domain is growing but faces its fair share of challenges as well. Formal recognition in the esports domain and government regulation for real money games would be the top challenges that the segment is facing currently. I strongly feel that a central law which takes into consideration Marketing, Product, and Business would really help make the market sustainable for the long-term.

What’s next for GMNG? What can users of the platform expect in the coming months?

We recently launched a couple of features on the platform that our users have loved-

– Clans: Streamers and esports orgs can now create clans and engage their audience using our tech.

– Win In-game currency: Users can now win and withdraw in-game currency of their favourite esports games by winning esports tournaments as well as GMNG original games on the platform.

Some other features our users can expect in the coming weeks are-

– Launch of the quickest tournament format in the India market.

– Some of the most popular card games are lined up for launch within this month as well.

Mobile spyware case: What made Delhi High Court to seek Centre’s stand and Google’s response?

0

Acting on a plea regarding the invasion of privacy of mobile phone users by spyware tools that monitor and record information, the Delhi High Court has sought the central government’s stand over the issue. Justice V Kameswar Rao issued notice on the petition by Dimple Vivek, a lawyer, who argued that mobile spyware or malware was a serious threat to mobile phone users who are placed under “total surveillance”.

The Court has also sought response from tech major Google and certain spyware sellers on the petition which seeks a direction to the Centre to stop the sale, operation and advertisement of such spyware. The petitioner has also sought directions to the Centre to regulate such spyware.

As per the petition, women were the primary victims of illegal spyware which is “capable of capturing significant amount of highly personal information” such as location tracking, monitoring text messages, calls, photos and camera. “Spyware or stalkerware refers to tools – apps, software programs, and devices – that let another person (such as an abuser/Spy/stalker etc) secretly monitor and record information about phone activity. The term ‘stalkerware’ is a more recent term that draws attention to the invasive, intrusive, and dangerous misuse of these tools,” it said.

The plea further claimed that certain spyware, which run on stealth mode and are difficult to detect or remove, are being sold/licensed to the public at large without any restriction or control and there is thus a potential of being misused. “This goes without saying that the very existence and use of the software/app is not only dangerous but is threatening to every individual including threat to the nation, as has enormous capacity of being misused grossly, including by terrorists, extremists etc… That unauthorized surveillance/accessing of stored data from the phones and other devices of citizens for reasons other than nation’s security would be illegal, objectionable and a matter of concern,” it said.

WhatsApp banned over 2 mn Indian accounts in December: Know what’s more in its compliance report

0

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp, in its compliance report, claims to have banned more than 2 million Indian accounts, while it received 528 grievance reports in December 2021. The Meta-owned company said 20,79,000 Indian accounts were banned on WhatsApp during the said period.

WhatsApp said that an Indian account is identified via a +91 phone number. Earlier, the company had stated that over 95 per cent of bans were due to the unauthorised use of automated or bulk messaging (spam). More than 1.75 million Indian accounts were banned by WhatsApp, while 602 grievance reports were received by the messaging platform in November last year.

In its latest report, the messaging platform said it has received 528 user reports spanning across account support (149), ban appeal (303), other support (29), product support (34) and safety (13) during December 2021. During this period, 24 accounts were cumulatively “actioned” under the ban appeal category (23) and other support (1) based on the reports received.

According to WhatsApp, “Accounts Actioned” denotes reports where it took remedial action based on the report. Taking action denotes either banning an account or a previously banned account being restored as a result of the complaint.

Also, reports may have been reviewed but not included as ‘Actioned’ for many reasons, including the user needing assistance to access their account or to use some features, user-requested restoration of a banned account and the request is denied, or if the reported account does not violate the laws of India or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.

It must be noted that the new IT rules, which came into effect in May last year, require large digital platforms (with over 5 million users) to publish compliance reports every month, mentioning the details of complaints received and action taken.

WhatsApp had earlier emphasised that being an end-to-end encrypted platform, it has no visibility into the content of any messages. As per reports, besides the behavioural signals from accounts, it relies on available unencrypted information, including user reports, profile photos, group photos and descriptions as well as advanced AI tools and resources to detect and prevent abuse on its platform.

After Germany, UK, Finland, Norway, Bangladesh and others, India too has announced to issue e-passport from 2022-23. The new passport will be equipped with embedded chip and futuristic technology. The Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affair Nirmala Sitharaman has announced to roll out e-Passports while tabling the Union Budget 2022-23 in Parliament on February 1. Earlier, Sanjay Bhattacharya, secretary, Ministry of External Affairs had announced that India to soon introduce next-gen ePassport for citizens.

Here are the key facts you need to know about the e-passport

The Ministry will issue chip-enabled e-Passports with advanced security features to citizens. The personal particulars of the applicants would be digitally signed and stored in the chip which would be embedded in the passport booklet. In case, anyone tampers with the chip, the system shall be able to identify it, resulting in the failure of the passport authentication.

e-passport will have secure biometric data and that will be in tune with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), United Nations. It looks like a regular passport.

The passport will be produced at India Security Press (ISP), Nashik. It will procure International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)-compliant electronic contactless inlays along with its operating system necessary for chip-enabled e-Passports.

Issuance of e-Passports will commence on the successful completion of the procurement process by ISP, Nashik.

The idea of e-passport was announced by external affairs minister S Jaishankar.

The first e-passport, with biometric details, was issued to former President Pratibha Patil in 2008.

The biometric passports are currently issued by more than 150 countries including Germany, UK and Bangladesh.

The e-passport will put a curb on circulation of fake passport as it is believed to have better security features, making it difficult for fraudsters to tamper with the information stored. Besides, the microchip will help immigration counters to quickly verify details of a traveller.

Union Budget 2022: Here’s what Industry has to say

0

There were two major announcements for tech and telecom industry in the budget speech of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. First, she said that spectrum auctions will be conducted this year to roll out 5G services within FY2022-23 in India. She also announced inclusion of the design led initiatives for 5G and other technologies in production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Second, the budget has proposed customs duty changes on components of mobile phone chargers, camera lens of mobile phones and other parts of electronics devices including hearables and wearables, in order to boost domestic manufacturing in India.

Here’s what industry and experts have to say on this development.

A Gururaj, MD, Optiemus Electronics

“The industry has been completely galvanized under the pioneering initiative of PLI scheme, with Hon’ble FM today stating that it has potential to create 60 lakh new jobs and additional production of 30 lakh crores. This is also a clarion call to the industry to work much harder in the years to come to make it a reality. On a macro level, the scheme around design-led manufacturing as part of the PLI scheme would fasten the development of the ecosystem, and also changes in customs duty will drive greater domestic value addition in electronics manufacturing in the country, which has grown rapidly in the last few years.”

Arvind Bali, CEO, Telecom Sector Skill Council

“The telecom sector announcement of spectrum auction in 2022 for the rollout of 5G and Scheme for design-led manufacturing for 5G ecosystem is likely to uplift human resource requirements significantly and also need to train the existing and new workforce. Rural OFC in villages through BharatNet is also a great opportunity for Skilling the rural youth. We are proud to be part of Skilling under KAVACH and also connecting our Telcojob portal with ASEEM. TSSC is constantly adapting to the changing dynamics and looking forward to contributing to telecom industry developments.”

Manish Sharma, CEO, Panasonic India

“In my experience with the current regime, policy conversations are not limited to Budget day but take place through the year. So we are hoping for discussions on how exports can be further incentivized and policy can be enhanced for design-led local manufacturing. From an electronics sector standpoint, we expected reforms in the Union Budget FY 2022 – 23 that would accelerate growth channelized by consumer demand. For instance, rationalizing the GST from 28% to 18% on ACs and large screen size (>105cm) TVs will improve affordability and penetration as these are no longer considered luxury items. We will look forward to hearing from the GST Committee on this.”

Vijay Kumar Mikkilineni, Head – Marketing, TCL India

“We welcome the Finance Minister’s increased focus on the consumer electronics industry and formation technology, which will definitely benefit all worldwide companies, including ours. The 2022 Union Budget allocated 1.97 lakh crore ($26 billion) for PLI projects, notably electronics components, which are among the 13 vital sectors that would undoubtedly help our economy expand. Furthermore, reduced customs taxes will encourage electronics manufacturing, which will benefit the electronics industry.”

Arnav Mutneja, Director, Quantum Hi-Tech

“The budget seems to create a level playing field for existing and upcoming brands in the market with a push towards creating domestic manufacturing capabilities. The move to calibrate tax structure for items like consumer electronics is a very novel move given the pandemic situation, as it will enable manufacturers to provide more and more lifestyle devices with advanced capabilities. The budget has given a balanced outlook of the economy in the years to come and we hope that the stress on the economy by COVID can be mitigated by this approach in a gradual but concrete manner.”

Achin Gupta, Country Head-India, ZOOOK

“The push towards manufacturing is a positive move to make India self-reliant and at the same time, the calibrated duty tax has put a 5% extra burden on importers. This move is in itself an indication of the government’s plan for India@100, where basic consumer electronics would be manufactured in India. The recent surge in the country’s wearables market is an indicator of success in the current scenario and the government too is targeting increased domestic manufacturing of wearable, hearable, and high growth electronic items.”

Arnav Kishore, Co-founder, Fire-Boltt

“It is a welcome announcement by the Finance Minister to focus on the domestic wearable market and boost domestic manufacturing of such devices. This is in sync with the record growth registered recently by homegrown brands in the Indian wearable market, and would further encourage more Indian brands to come up with innovative offerings in the segment. We also welcome the decision to extend tax benefits for startups and the fact that startups are being considered the drivers of the Indian economy’s growth.”

Vikas Jain, Co-founder and CEO, World of Play

“We support the government’s focus on technology, it will help many tech based companies like World of Play to come up with exciting product experience for the Indian consumers. We welcome the focus of government on the wearables and acoustic component ecosystem and domestic manufacturing and believe on a long term, this focus will make India as a formidable design and manufacturing powerhouse. Additionally, the boost in ease of doing business and special impetus on creating 60 lakh new jobs will give a desired push to the goal of becoming AtmaNirbhar Bharat. As a brand, we promote and follow Make in India and we believe long-term policies like this will give us the desired support for the local design and also manufacturing in India.”

Archit Agarwal, Co-founder, Crossbeats

“The push to the manufacturing industry is a strategic move to reduce the dependence on imports and upgrade the capabilities of Indian manufacturers to meet the needs internally. It was nice to hear that the growth in the wearable market has been recognized by the government and custom duty calibration should bring more opportunities for domestic brands to provide unique options to the masses.”

Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices & IPDS, IDC India

“While we await specific details on quantum on duty concessions, this is a welcome step. Wearables are seeing stratospheric growth in demand and shall continue to do so in India. As consumers mature into using more tech, other complementary devices like wearables will see growth. Making India competitive in its manufacturing to meet local demand as well as position India as a manufacturing and export hub for such devices is a good initiative.”

Alok Dubey, CFO, Acer India

“With government infrastructure spending push, we are likely to see more employment and growth opportunities and enhanced private sector investment in manufacturing. We are confident that the exemption of duty on parts of select electronic items will further boost the domestic manufacturing of electronics goods under the PLI scheme. Overall, the Union Budget 2022-23 is a promising budget and a step forward towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat.”

Kunal Sarkar, Vice President, PredictiVu

“The government’s continued efforts to promote domestic manufacturing of mobile phones are highly appreciated. As part of the government’s ambitious Make in India and AatamNirbhar Bharat initiative, a reduction in duty concessions on smartphone parts has been introduced in Union Budget 2022. It will further boost local production, lower the compliance burden, and alleviate the semiconductor shortage that will further provide a level playing field to the manufacturing players and enable them to compete with global players. A rise in demand has resulted in increased localization of smartphones, enabling these brands to improve supply chain efficiencies and shorter their time to market. Budget allocations to R&D and innovations are commendable. The rollout of 5G mobile services would be another big boost for the Indian mobile phones market.”

Rakesh Deshmukh, Co-founder and CEO, Indus OS

Rakesh Deshmukh-Indus OS

“At Indus App Bazaar, in 2021 we saw a significant rise in the usage of apps in regional languages. While the National language translation mission helps with making knowledge text more readily available. We have been assisting Indians onboard the digital economy. We believe that the Government should widen the scope of Make in India smartphone initiative to include software solutions to help local players innovate.”

Xiaomi 11i 5G Review: A solid performer that’s worth being considered

0

Xiaomi recently launched its two new smartphones in its latest Xiaomi 11i series, one of which is the Xiaomi 11i 5G that features 67W fast charging support, which is still faster than many smartphones in this category.

We have just got the new Xiaomi 11i, which has a whole bunch of features and is a substantial upgrade to last year’s Mi 10i, most notably its design, fast charging, and AMOLED display. But is this phone just about fast charging? Is it a good device overall? Is it a good upgrade to the Mi 10i? Here’s what we have to say about Xiaomi 11i 5G in this review.

What’s in the box?

When you open the box, you get the SIM ejector tool, manual and a transparent soft gel phone case with the one common at the back. Then, we have our handset Xiaomi 11i 5G. It includes the 67W turbo charger along with the USB Type-C cable. Just to remind you guys, the Xiaomi 11i 5G has 5,160mAh battery and you can charge over half of it in just 15 minutes, which is amazing.

Design

The Xiaomi 11i 5G is a large phone and has a boxy design – you will like it if you have used iPhone or Reno series. The grip is very good as the corners are rounded, so they don’t dig into your palms. I personally have a good experience in holding it. It feels great in the hands, and looks premium. Although, it is a bit heavy smartphone, which weighs around 208 grams. If you want the lighter phone, which is around 170-180 gram – like Realme GT Master Edition or Motorola Edge 20, then maybe you will be disappointed.

It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded on the power button. Volume buttons are next to it. On the top, you get a speaker, which is JBL audio and mind it, it’s awesome. There’s a headphone jack and IR blaster on the top as well. In the bottom, you get a speaker, a triple-slot 5G SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot, and USB type charging. There’s nothing on the left side.

The backside has a protruding triple camera setup on the top left side, unlike the Mi 10i which used the center. There’s Xiaomi 5G branding at the bottom and it offers an IP53 rating which means the phone is water-resistant. I have got the Pacific Pearl colour with me, but you can also choose from the Camo Green, Stealth Black, and Purple Mist colour options.

Display

I found its display really cool. For a screen, we have a very colourful and beautiful formulated 6.67-inches AMOLED display protected with Gorilla Glass. It has a full HD+ resolution, a pick brightness of 1200 nits, and 360 Hz touch sampling rate. The colours and details are impeccable. You can say it is exactly the same display that you got in Redmi Note 10 Pro and Pro Max. The display is bright and very sharp and if I compare it with other devices of the same range, it beats them all. With this, support of 120 Hz refresh rate is given, which is again perfect. And something you get here that many other mid-rangers don’t provide is protection against water and dust. Xiaomi 11i is certified with IP53 splash proof for image quality.

Processor

The performance of Xiaomi 11i is really good. Here, a new processor is given, which is MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC. It is one of the first phones to equip the MediaTek Dimensity 920 5G SoC in India. I have used it for around 15 days and didn’t feel any lag. You won’t feel any issue in day to day use. Now if you are wondering if there’s any heating issue with this phone or not, then I haven’t felt as such issue till now. And even after playing for more than 30 minutes, I haven’t noticed any lag. The game was smooth with no heating issue. So in the performance summary, I will say my experience with MediaTek Dimensity 920 was good.

In terms of memory, the Xiaomi 11i offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for the base model, and there’s an 8GB model that also has 128GB of storage. There’s no 256GB variant, and I feel like that’s an omission considering other mid-range phones are configurable with additional storage and memory.

You get MIUI 12.5 – still based on Android 11, while some new smartphones have already moved to the new Android 12 operating system. Xiaomi should have launched with Android 12 but this is what it is now.

One more amazing feature of the Xiaomi 11i is its speaker. Here two speakers are present – one is exactly on the top. Generally, it comes in the earpiece grill, but here it is on top and on the bottom as well. Speakers are very loud. You can consider it the loudest speaker of this price segment.

Cameras

Here triple camera setup is given in Xiaomi 11i 5G. It comes with 108-megapixel as the main camera utilizing the Samsung HM2 sensor while the other two cameras are – 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and a macro camera. The selfie camera on the front side of the smartphone is 16-megapixel.

The 108-megapixel primary sensor captures pretty good pictures in well-lit conditions. In the daylight full of bright sunshine, you will see some gorgeous looking pictures with lots of details and good sharpness. Most of the photographs that I took, I found the colours mostly accurate, and there is ample resolved detail. The larger size of the sensor clicks awesome close-ups and helps in improving low-light performance as well, even when you don’t use night mode.

Let’s talk about the selfie camera, here 16-megapixel camera at the front is given. Photographs are okay. But the best thing is that you can record video up to 1080p 60FPS, which is quite good. If you make Instagram reels or Facebook videos, you will get more frames in slow motion. Selfie videos are good. If we talk about the rear camera, you can shoot video up to 4k 30 fps which is okay. One more good part is, which is again, I think comes in Redmi devices – you can shoot macro videos also.

Battery

One of the surprising things about Xiaomi 11i is its fast charging, capped at 67W. The phone packs a 5,160 mAh battery that lasts longer than its predecessor. It is claimed to charge up to 50 percent in just 15 minutes. I have used the phone heavily for two days and still eight percent battery left at the end of the day. This way I guess you can easily use it for 2-2.5 days.

Still, if you want even faster charging support. Consider going for Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge that comes with 120W fast charging beast. It is claimed to charge to 100 percent in about 15 minutes.

Price

The price of Xiaomi 11i 5G in India is starting from Rs 22,499, but it also got some offers. With bank offers, users can purchase the newly launched device at an additional cashback of up to Rs 2,500, coupled with a special introductory New Year offer of Rs 1,500. In addition, existing Redmi Note users can avail extra Rs 4,000 on exchange of their smartphones. It is available on mi.com, Mi Home stores, Flipkart, and other offline retail outlets.

Conclusion

There are very few flaws in Xiaomi 11i. The phone has a 120 Hz AMOLED display, a 67W fast charging support, faster performance with its new MediaTek Dimensity 920 5G octa-core processor, and dual stereo speakers. You even get water resistance. At the end of the day, the Xiaomi 11i 5G is a great value packed mid ranger phone that can compete with much more expensive devices and it’s definitely worth recommending.
