Google has unveiled its latest quantum computing chip called Willow making waves across the tech world. Willow promises to reduce errors exponentially and tackles a challenge in quantum error correction that researchers have been chasing for nearly 30 years.

Google claims that Willow can solve a standard benchmark computation in under five minutes. For context, the same task would take the fastest supercomputer around 10 septillion years or approximately 1025 years.

The new chip announcement was made in a detailed blog post by Founder and Lead Google Quantum AI, Hartmut Neven.

Neven revealed Google Quantum AI was founded back in 2012 with a vision to develop large-scale and useful quantum computers that can be the tool to utilise quantum mechanics.  The aim was always to develop something that can benefit society by “advancing scientific discovery, developing helpful applications and tackling some of society’s greatest challenges.”

Here’s an introduction video shared by Google with Director of Quantum Hardware Julian Kelly –

Sundar Pichai and Elon Musk Exchange on X

Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared his excitement on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “We see Willow as an important step in our journey to build a useful quantum computer with practical applications in areas like drug discovery, fusion energy, battery design + more.”

The announcement quickly caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk who reacted with a simple “Wow” on Pichai’s post.

Sundar Pichai responded enthusiastically suggesting, “We should do a quantum cluster in space with Starship one day.” Musk replied optimistically, “That will probably happen” and the duo ventured into a discussion about civilization’s advancement on the Kardashev scale.

Musk noted, “Any self-respecting civilization should at least reach Kardashev Type II. In my opinion, we are currently only at <5% of Type I. To get to ~30%, we would need to place solar panels in all desert or highly arid regions.” Pichai agreed, adding, “We should scale solar so much more. Amazing that we keep looking at alternatives when the most obvious path is staring at us, literally!”

How Social Media Reacted?

The open exchange between two of the biggest names in the tech community quickly went viral leaving tech enthusiasts on social media excited.

Some users seem excited witnessing two big names geek out on the platform. Appreciating the open discussion, one user wrote, “It’s so cool that we get to see on X unfiltered discussions between CEOs,” commented an individual.”

One user commented, “Love to see the discussion among leaders so casually on this app. This kind of open conversation is essential to bring the right attention to technology.”

Another chimed in praising the idea and wrote, “Quantum mechanics in action. Will be keen to see it in space application soon. Quantum cluster space data centre sounds like the way to go forward! Keep it coming.”

Willow Hints About Multiple Universes

Meanwhile, Google Quantum AI founder Hartmut Neven also fueled the excitement with a bold claim in his blog post. Neven claimed that Willow’s astonishing speed might indicate the existence of parallel universes.

Neven wrote in a blog post, “Willow’s performance on this benchmark is astonishing: It performed a computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. This mind-boggling number… lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse.”

This idea ties back to the theory proposed by physicist David Deutsch, who first suggested that quantum computing could be evidence of a multiverse.

However, not everyone is convinced. Several critics online pointed out that the performance claims are based on a benchmark created by Google itself. While this benchmark is useful only for measuring progress in quantum computing and does not necessarily prove anything about parallel universes.

We recently reported how an Apple patent document revealed details of a blood pressure tech for future Apple Watches.

It has been clear for a while now that Apple is focused on making the Apple Watch more than a simple smartwatch. It is consistently working on developing useful features that will help people in their everyday life.

Now a Bloomberg report has highlighted details of another major Apple Watch upgrade in development.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly working on exciting upgrades for its next-generation Apple Watch Ultra including a potential lifesaving feature and a major connectivity upgrade.

Here’s a quick recap of the recent update.

Apple Watch 3 Might Get Satellite Connectivity

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 could be the first Apple Watch to support satellite messaging.

According to the Bloomberg report, this feature would allow users to send text messages via satellite when Wi-Fi or cellular networks are unavailable, as long as they have a clear view of the sky.

It’s similar to the satellite connectivity already available on modern iPhones.

If this really happens, it could be a game-changer for users who venture off the grid without their phones. It may also come in handy if an iPhone is lost or damaged in an emergency situation.

Using the Ultra model for this feature makes sense due to its larger battery, which offers twice the life of the sleeker Series models.

Apple Watch To Get Modem Switch For 5G

Apart from satellite messaging, Gurman also revealed that Apple is planning to upgrade the Apple Watch’s cellular capabilities.

Gurman reports that Apple will switch from Intel modems to MediaTek modems paving the way for 5G connectivity in upcoming models. Specifically, the Apple Watch will use 5G RedCap, a streamlined version of 5G designed for wearables and devices that don’t need ultra-fast speeds.

Gurman notes, “The move to MediaTek will also include support for 5G Redcap, a lower-tier 5G service aimed at internet-connected devices and wearables that typically don’t require fast data connections.”

This marks a significant leap from the current 4G LTE connectivity that has been standard since the Apple Watch Series 3 debuted in 2017.

He added, “Current Apple Watches use 4G LTE and never moved to the 5G standard, despite Apple switching over the iPhone in 2020.”

Meanwhile, Apple continues to work on advanced health features for future Apple Watches. These include a blood-pressure monitoring tool to detect signs of hypertension and noninvasive blood-glucose tracking.

If these features come to fruition, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 could be one of the most advanced wearables yet with health, safety and connectivity features like never seen before.

FAQs

Q1. What new connectivity feature might the Apple Watch Ultra 3 include?

Answer. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 could support satellite messaging allowing users to send text messages via satellite when Wi-Fi or cellular networks are unavailable.

Q2. What modem change is Apple planning for the Apple Watch Ultra 3?

Answer. Apple plans to switch from Intel modems to MediaTek modems, introducing 5G RedCap, a lower-tier 5G service designed for wearables and devices that don’t need ultra-fast speeds.

Q3. What advanced health features is Apple working on for future Apple Watches?

Answer. Apple is working on advanced health features like blood pressure monitoring to detect signs of hypertension and noninvasive blood-glucose tracking.

Creators can toggle to turn on “Trial” when sharing a reel to test it with non-followers first. (Image credit – Instagram)

Explain how the feature will work, Meta shared instructions, “To share a reel as a trial, simply take the usual steps to create a reel, but before sharing, tap the toggle to turn on ‘Trial.’ After sharing your trial reel, you can find it by visiting your profile, where it will appear alongside any drafts you have.”

image
You can choose whether to share it with everyone automatically once the trial period ends or not. (Image credit – Instagram)

It further added, “Only you will be able to see that your reel is a trial. It will not be shown to other people on your profile’s main grid or Reels tab unless you later decide to share it with everyone and your followers won’t see the trial reel in their feed or Reels tab.”

Moreover, creators will get access to insights and metrics 24 hours after posting a trial reel. If the trial reel performs well, creators will have the option to share it automatically with their followers after 72 hours. Once the reel is shared with all followers, it will appear live on your Instagram profile grid. The reel will be eligible to be distributed to followers on all Instagram surfaces.

Approximately 24 hours after you share a trial reel, you can view key engagement metrics in the reels viewer – including views, likes, comments and shares.

For now, the Trial Reels feature is in its own testing phase.

Meta has made it available to a select group of users with plans to roll it out globally to all eligible creators in the coming weeks.

FAQs

Q1. What is the purpose of Instagram’s Trial Reels feature?

Answer. The Trial Reels feature helps creators test how their videos perform with non-followers before sharing them with their actual audience, ensuring that only engaging videos reach their followers.

Q2. How can creators share a reel as a trial on Instagram?

Answer.  Creators can share a reel as a trial by creating a reel as usual, then tapping the toggle to turn on ‘Trial’ before sharing it. The trial reel will appear alongside any drafts on their profile, visible only to them.

Q3. What insights do creators get after posting a trial reel?

Answer. Creators get access to insights and metrics 24 hours after posting a trial reel. If the trial reel performs well, they can automatically share it with their followers after 72 hours.

Q4. Is the trial reel on Instagram available for everyone?

Answer. Only the creator can see that a reel is a trial. It will not be shown on the profile’s main grid or Reels tab unless the creator decides to share it with everyone later.

Q5.How to share trial reels on Instagram?

Answer. To share your trial reel on Instagram:
Create a reel. Follow the steps until it’s time to share.
Before sharing the reel, tap the toggle to turn on Trial.
Tap Share.
Only you will be able to see that your reel is a trial. After you share your trial reel, your followers won’t see it in Feed or Instagram’s Reels tab. Your trial reel will not appear in your profile’s reels tab or your main grid unless you later decide to Share to everyone.
You’ll see insights on your trial reel within 24 hours after sharing so you can understand how it is performing.
Note: Some followers may still see your reel in other places. For example, someone might share your reel with them in a direct message or on a page that shows reels with the same audio, location or filter.

Q6.How to share trial reels with everyone on Instagram?

Answer. After you share a trial reel, you can see how the reel is performing in the reels viewer. See engagement metrics, such as Views, Likes, Comments, and Shares. If you feel like your reel is performing well, you may consider sharing it with everyone to increase its reach and connect with your followers.

To share your trial reel with everyone:

Tap on the View trial insights button in the reels viewer.

Tap Share to everyone.

Your reel will now be displayed on the main grid and reels tab of your profile, and may be seen by followers in their Feed and Instagram’s Reels tab. The sooner you share your reel with everyone, the more likely your followers will see it in their Feed.
Note: Trial reels can take longer to gain views because we’re finding non-followers who will enjoy the content. They are treated separately from your other reels in our ranking systems, so shouldn’t impact the performance of your regular reels content.

Q7.How to share trial reels automatically with everyone on Instagram ?

Answer. You have the option to have Instagram automatically share your trial reel with followers. If you turn on this setting, we will automatically share your reel if we determine it’s performing well by getting a lot of views within the first 72 hours.
To share your trial reels to everyone automatically:
Create a reel.
On the publish screen, tap How it works under the Trials toggle.
Tap to toggle on Share to everyone automatically.
Tap Got it to save changes.
Note: This setting will be applied to all trial reels you share in the future unless you change it.

The Pixel Tablet will be completing two years in the market in a matter of months and some of us are still waiting for the Google stylus pen. If you too like us are waiting for the Google Pen for the Pixel Tablet, we have an update for you.

According to a recent exclusive report by Android Authority, the pen was actively in development and was likely intended to launch alongside the cancelled Pixel Tablet 2.

Google Stylus Pen for Pixel Tablet has been a matter of speculation for a while now. Many expected a tech giant to launch the official pen when it launched the Pixel Tablet. While that didn’t happen, leaks eventually confirmed that Google is indeed developing a stylus for its tablet.

However, there has been radio silence since then and the stylus never made it to the market despite the anticipation. So, the Pixel tablet now supports USI 2.0 styli but there was no official pen from Google to pair with it.

Folks at Android Authority shared the update based on their conversation with a source inside Google. Apart from a confirmation that the product plan is still active, the report further reveals some intriguing details about the stylus.

Google Pen for Pixel Tablet – What We Know So Far?

The official name of the stylus is the “Pen for Google Pixel Tablet,” with the codename “bushukan” (or “B80”) and model number GM0KF. Google had progressed significantly in its development, even starting certification processes across various global bodies.

The pen was designed in two colours—white and grey, presumably named “porcelain” and “hazel” to complement the Pixel Tablet. It features exchangeable tips and includes a button that launches a quick note-taking app.

Since the Pixel Tablet lacks a dedicated docking spot for the pen, Google devised a magnetic charging solution that docks the pen onto the keyboard accessory it was also developing.

Google has worked on integrating stylus support into its ecosystem including handwriting-to-text conversion. This feature makes the pen more adaptable, especially since not many apps offer direct stylus input. Additionally, the pen supports Find My Device, making it easier to locate if misplaced.

The Android Authority report points how that at this stage in the Pixel Tablet’s lifecycle launching the pen could be ‘too little, too late.’
