Highlights

  • Google is reportedly planning to fire as many as 10000 underperforming employees.
  • The Big Tech company plans to get rid of nearly 6 per cent of its workforce.
  • Google plans to evaluate the performance of its employees.

In Brief

It seems Google is not going to take things lightly anymore when it comes to the competence of its employees. In the light of Elon Musk issuing a whip to Twitter employees to pull up their socks and start working 40 hours a week, Google seems to fancy stepping into Musk’s shoes.

Google will now be following the footsteps of its rival tech giants like Meta, Twitter, and Amazon, by firing as many as 10,000 underperforming and incompetent employees, which is around 6% of the total workforce that the company possesses under such dire global economic conditions.

The past few months have been quite rough for the employees of the aforementioned companies as many of them have been shown the door, but objectively speaking, it is their own incompetence and laziness that is to blame for such a thing happening to them.

If the latest reports are anything to go by, it seems that Google is going for a performance evaluation and review for which it is conducting a new ranking and improvement plant where its employees can work on their performance and improve them significantly.

However, the main purpose of this performance management system is to weed out employees that are no good and underperforming as the company has to bear the brunt of their worthlessness.

Performance Review

Once these employees are identified they will be asked to leave the company by the start of 2023, which is why this performance management system will come with a rating option so that team members can be rated accordingly as per their performance so that their bonuses and stock grants are fixed.

Needless to say, even in big tech companies, there are many employees that are slacking out at work or are putting in little to no effort to get the job done but thanks to this performance management system, managers can rate the employees and avoid giving them any bonus.

Alphabet is the parental company of Google that hasn’t yet confirmed the news of any layoffs as yet but CEO Sunder Pichai had hinted that this would happen around mid-2022, as present day events too are pointing towards the same.

Pichai had recently clarified in an LA Code Conference that the increase in employee count had gradually slowed down the company’s growth for which he had planned to improve things so as to make the organization increase its productivity by at least 20%.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, Google is just like any multinational organization whose main aim is to grow and sustain itself in the tech world where there is cut-throat competition from all corners.

Just like any other company, Google had also hired dozens of employees during the Covid-19 pandemic but is now experiencing financial setbacks due to their employees’ incompetence, for which Pichai warned them to start becoming serious with their work.

Hopefully, his warnings may have fallen on fruitful ears due to which serious employees will start doing their work and yield positive results in the near future in order to avoid risking their jobs.
