The MoU is aimed at facilitating the placements of candidates for various job roles in the ICT domain, with targeted placements in upcoming job roles like 5G, drone technology, etc. as well as job roles to bridge the industry skill gap.

“We need to employ concerted efforts to help youngsters in our country get employment. The scope of this partnership will go beyond government skill development programs and paid programs by TSSC. We plan to place candidates from various locations and educational backgrounds through the BetterPlace database. Our combined aim is to organize job fairs targeting various skill requirements within the industry and tackle geographical segments in our country. The next wave of telecom will require an additional frontline workforce and we hope to fulfill this demand,” commented Arvind Bali, CEO, TSSC.

TSSC understands industry requirements through its years of experience and we will use our online platform to create opportunities catering to industry and candidate interests. BetterPlace, through its technological prowess and people-centric approach, will help TSSC achieve operational excellence, and blue-collar job seekers improve their lives.”

Vodafone Idea’s financial stress to impact various stakeholders; govt support critical: ICRA

0

The telecom industry had been facing headwinds since the launch of services by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) which manifested in a decline in revenue and profit generation. Further, the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) penalty added to the woes of the industry and has kept the debt levels elevated. Owing to the aforementioned reasons, the financial position of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has been deteriorating due to mounting losses and increasing debt levels. As per an ICRA note, this stress on VIL is likely to impact financial as well as other stakeholders and can impact the industry structure.

Explains Sabyasachi Majumdar, Group Head & Senior Vice President, ICRA, “Over the last 12 quarters starting Q2FY2019, VIL has been reporting sizeable losses. Further, with the addition of AGR liabilities, the debt has burgeoned to more than Rs 2 lakh crore as on June 30, 2021 (including lease liabilities). This, along with consistent churn in the subscriber base, largely stagnant 4G user base, and pressure on ARPU levels have kept the revenue and profit generation muted. Further, the capex levels have remained low vis-à-vis competition resulting in limited network up-gradation and expansion. This coupled with sizeable repayment obligations in the coming quarters is likely to keep its financial position stressed. This pressure is likely to impact its financial stakeholders as VIL owes Rs 23,400 crores to lenders and Rs 168,190 crores to GoI towards spectrum and AGR deferred dues as on June 30, 2021. In addition, it will also have a bearing on VIL’s 255 million subscribers, large employee base, and vendors, especially tower companies. In a scenario of VIL’s collapse, tower companies will lose around 180,000 tenancies that VIL occupies, and out of these, ICRA expects only 40-50% of the tenancies to be gradually regained by the tower companies and balance would be lost owing to redundancies and network realignment.”

For the ICRA sample of independent tower companies, VIL occupies a 35% tenancy share and 36% revenue share. In a situation of VIL shutting down operations, tower companies will have to face a loss of these tenancies, translating into revenue and EBITDA decline for the industry. However, in that scenario, the existing 255 million subscribers of VIL will be taken up by the active telcos, who will have to expand their network presence to cater to a large additional subscriber base. ICRA expects that the existing telcos will gradually take up only 40-50% of VIL’s tenancies and the total tenancies for the industry by FY2024 are likely to remain lower than FY2021 levels. The demand for loadings and high-power small cells is expected to remain elevated for the tower industry. Apart from tenancy loss, tower companies will also bear the brunt of write-offs for VIL’s receivables, which have been witnessing a steady increase lately. With this, while the debt metrics are likely to witness moderation, relatively low debt levels and the strong liquidity position of the tower companies are likely to alleviate these concerns to some extent.

“Given the current situation and sizeable obligations in the near term for VIL, material external support (primarily from Government) can act as a relief measure. The most effective relief can come in the form of extension of a moratorium on spectrum dues beyond FY2022, which can result in deferment of dues payable in FY2023 to the tune of Rs. 32,000 crores for the industry of which Rs. 16,000 crores are for VIL. Moreover, a reduction in the levies paid by telcos, namely license fees and spectrum usage charges can also lift the EBITDA. A 1% reduction in levies leads to an annual saving of Rs. 1600 crores for the industry. This apart, other measures like reduction in interest rates on DoT dues, elongation of spectrum allotment tenure, and introduction of floor tariffs can also aid the industry. ICRA estimates that Re. 1 increase in ARPU translates into Rs. 450-500 crores EBITDA accretion for the industry. A combination of these relief measures could aid the financial profile and the structure of the industry,” concludes Ankit Jain, Sector Head & Assistant Vice President, ICRA.

TECNO launches new brand slogan of ‘Stop At Nothing’ in India

0

TECNO today launched its new brand slogan of ‘Stop At Nothing’ while launching a brand campaign hashtagged #StopAtNothing that pays tribute to those who continue to push forward against all odds. #StopAtNothing represents TECNO’s recognition of human progress and people’s pursuit for purpose, potential, and excellence.

With a new brand slogan, TECNO is indeed unstoppable. As per the Counterpoint Q2 2021 report, it has seen a 210% year-on-year growth in the Indian market, reaching 11 million units sold since its local launch in April 2017.

#StopAtNothing is TECNO’s next step in delivering on a promise of unlocking the best of contemporary smartphone technologies and making it accessible for global emerging markets.

TECNO’s brand campaign celebrates “progressive mavericks” and those “young at heart”, the youth who admirably stayed resilient in the face of adversity.

“We’ve seen how resilient and progressive society can be in the face of adversity, especially among young adults in emerging markets. No matter where you come from or what you physically look like or the gender you belong to, people will ‘stop at nothing’ to progress and find creative and disruptive ways to achieve their potential. In return, they find themselves on a joyous and exciting journey,” says Danni Xu, CMO of TECNO. “And this attitude and spirit resonate so strongly with TECNO that we were compelled to embrace it and position it at the very core of who we are and what we do as a technology brand.”

The campaign, which will be rolled out across the globe, features several above-the-line elements including a 60-second global brand video created to demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit. It will be supported by a strategic execution of digital, social, and other marketing tactics emanating from representative markets such as Nigeria, Kenya, India, Turkey, the Philippines, and Russia.

“#StopAtNothing is so much more another brand campaign,” says Xu. “It represents the values and the attitude that we as a brand embrace and TECNO’s role in providing the technology they need to progress even further.”

“#StopAtNothing not only inspires, but it also cements TECNO’s total commitment to supporting our consumers with innovative and elegant technology solutions that act as an enabler of progression,” adds Xu.

TECNO’s goal is to become the most admired tech brand in the world, and continually making breakthroughs in product and experience innovations.

According to a recent Counterpoint study Q2 report, Transsion group brands (itel, Infinix, and TECNO) registered a 296% YoY growth, capturing a 7% share collectively in Q2 2021 in the overall India smartphone market.

“Our success in the Indian market so far be credited to our ‘global approach’ which is based on our philosophy of ‘Think Globally, Act Locally. We exercise foresight to anticipate market needs, adopt change, and tailor our products to suit the behavioral patterns of our customers,” concludes Xu.

Earlier this year, TECNO announced its latest “superpower” – securing Chris Evans, an A-list Hollywood celebrity as its worldwide brand ambassador. This signing has intensified TECNO’s determination to be recognized as a leader in global emerging markets.

As the brand continues to grow on the world stage, TECNO now finds itself competing with major mainstream brands, which undoubtedly will sit up and take note of TECNO’s “super-heroic” maneuver.

Airtel demonstrates India’s first cloud gaming experience on a 5G network

0

Marking yet another industry first on 5G, telecom major Airtel today said that it has successfully conducted India’s first cloud gaming session in a 5G environment. The demonstration was conducted in Manesar (Gurgaon) as part of the ongoing 5G trials using spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecom (Government of India).

For the 5G cloud gaming demonstration, Airtel partnered with two of India’s leading gamers –Mortal (Naman Mathur) and Mamba (Salman Ahmad). Leveraging the gaming technology platform from Blacknut, a sprint racing challenge on Asphalt was unveiled for Mortal and Mamba to put their gaming skills to test in a blazing fast and ultra-low latency 5G environment.

Describing their experience, Mortal and Mamba said, “We were totally blown away. This was high end PC and console-quality gaming experience on a smartphone. We can say with confidence that 5G will truly unlock the online gaming scene in India and massify by creating opportunities to build and publish games out of India and bringing a lot of talented gamers from small towns to the mainstream. Thank you Airtel for giving us this wonderful opportunity.”

Mortal and Mamba enjoyed the thrilling session on smartphones connected to 3500 MHz high capacity spectrum band. The 5G test network delivered speeds in excess of 1 Gbps and latency in the range of 10 milliseconds.

Cloud gaming allows users to stream and play games in real time without having to download these or invest in gaming hardware. With the advent of 5G networks, cloud gaming is expected to become the new normal as users will be able to enjoy high end console like gaming experience on smartphones and tablets while on the move. India, with its vast youth population, growing smartphone penetration and 5G networks will see mobile gaming evolve into a $2.4 billion market opportunity. India’s base of 436 million online gamers is expected to reach 510 million by 2022.

Randeep Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said, “Cloud gaming will be one of the biggest use cases of 5G, thanks to the combination of high speed and low latency. After delivering India’s first 5G demo over a test network, we are thrilled to conduct this exciting 5G gaming session. Imagine enjoying real time gaming on the go with someone sitting in another part of the world. This is just the beginning of an exciting digital future that Airtel will enable for its customers as we prepare to roll-out 5G in India.”

Earlier this year, Airtel successfully demonstrated 5G services over a LIVE 4G network in Hyderabad, marking an industry first. It is also conducting 5G trials in multiple cities across India and validating technologies and use cases through the trial spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecom. Airtel has partnered with Ericsson and Nokia for these trials.

Airtel is also spearheading the O-RAN Alliance initiatives in India to build 5G solutions. It has already announced partnerships with Tata Group, Qualcomm, Intel, Mavenir and Altiostar.
