How online identity verification can help MNOs reach the full potential of eSim technology

0

Combining digital identity verification techniques with eSim devices and Remote Sim Provisioning technologies will enable MNOs to offer their subscribers the completely digitized experiences that they expect.

Online identity verification: Securing remote customer touchpoints

The telecom industry has been undergoing its digital transformation for many years, but like in most other businesses, this transformation has vastly accelerated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, consumers are using their mobile devices (including laptops and tablets) more than ever—replacing many physical touchpoints with their digital equivalents.

As business processes and customer interactions evolve, eSim technology will enable telcos and other service providers to keep pace with change and offer new types of services. Securing these digital touchpoints with digital onboarding and verification technology will be the key to ensuring that both customers and service providers benefit fully from the eSim offering throughout the subscriber lifecycle.

The eSim revolution

An eSim, or “embedded Sim,” offers the same services as a physical Sim card without the need for a Sim card tray or removable component. eSims (otherwise known by the technical term “eUICC”) are embedded in a mobile device and can connect subscribers to any mobile network operator (MNO) that offers eSim services. With an eSim device, subscribers can install a digital profile via a mobile operator, and then select and activate a data plan within just a few minutes.

eSim technology offers an out-of-the-box experience for consumers, providing instant connectivity without having to wait for a physical Sim card or go to a shop. Now they can subscribe to telecom plans anytime and anywhere—from the comfort of their own home or on-the go, such as when travelling abroad.

“eSim technology offers an out-of-the-box experience for consumers, providing instant connectivity without having to wait for a physical Sim card or go to a shop. Now they can subscribe to telecom plans anytime and anywhere—from the comfort of their own home or on-the go, such as when travelling abroad”

Momentum for eSim technology is accelerating in the consumer market. According to GSMA1, the number of eSim devices commercially available for purchase reached 110 models at the end of 2020, across smartphones, laptops, smartwatches and tablets. With 2.4 billion eSim smartphone connections expected worldwide by 2025 (33% of total smartphone connections), eSim support will soon become an indispensable offering for MNOs.

However, there is no point in being able to instantly and remotely provision eSim cards, if customers still have to visit a retail store and meet an agent to verify their identity. In order to truly meet the expectations of today’s digital-first customer, telcos need to master their digital touchpoints from the very first customer interaction.

How mobile operators can onboard their subscribers remotely

Online identity verification will enable telcos to securely and conveniently onboard their subscribers and activate a subscription without the need for them to visit a brick-and-mortar location.

The digital onboarding process (also referred to as electronic Know Your Customer or eKYC processes) could be performed entirely from a user’s own device, via the carrier’s application or its web page. Once a user selects their desired data plan, they could use their phone camera to scan various identity documents and register their biometrics via selfie or fingerprint scan. While relatively simple for the user, these checks actually involve a series of verifications for document authenticity, user liveness, as well as watchlist screening. They ensure MNOs that new subscribers are who they claim to be, and that they have not previously been involved in fraudulent activity.

By using eKYC services combined with an eSim, customers can start using mobile services immediately after they complete their application, wherever and whenever they wish. This will enable telecom operators to fully embrace, capture and monetize the new opportunities presented by eSim.

Beyond mobile connectivity: Unlocking the potential of eSim

eSim represents a significant shift in marketing strategy for mobile operators. This technology offers the possibility to reach customers wherever they are, whenever they want, in new and more personalized ways.

Using methods such as QR codes, MNOs can meet their subscribers while in-air, on the ground, or even underground on public transportation. Subscribers need just to scan the code with their devices and follow a few simple steps to activate a plan and start benefitting from services.

“Using methods such as QR codes, MNOs can meet their subscribers while in-air, on the ground, or even underground on public transportation. Subscribers need just to scan the code with their devices and follow a few simple steps to activate a plan and start benefitting from services”

One could argue that since customers will be able to switch between networks and offers more easily than ever before, this could increase churn rate. Nevertheless, if mobile network operators are able to provide the superior experiences that their customers expect, they are likely not only to gain and retain more customers but also to activate more connected devices. Therefore, most telcos view eSim not as threat, but as an incredible opportunity to create new business models and services, and generate new revenue streams by upselling and cross selling multiple plans to the consumer.

As the line between physical and digital touchpoints continues to blur, the ability to adapt to change and offer consumers the personalized, digital-first experiences they’re seeking can be the differentiator that sets one service provider apart from all others on the market.

Vivo X70 Pro Review: The camera king that’s worth recommending

0

Smartphone maker Vivo’s brand new X70 Pro recently made its way to the India stores. The brand has been churning out stylish smartphones with the focus on cameras as its top priority, while features like display and performance have been given high weightage too. The premium grade phone comes with highlighted features like Zeiss optics, decent battery, powerful processor and lot more.

Ahead of the official launch, we have been shared the Vivo X70 Pro unit by the company to get an exclusive experience of the handset and provide you an unbiased review of the same. So today, I’m going to review the Vivo X70 Pro that I have been testing out for around 20 days. Now, this device is pretty interesting because it is positioned as one of the better camera smartphones out there. Here, I am going to be sharing all my experience of using the phone. Now what have Vivo done this year, what’s so special about X70 Pro? Let’s review the device:

What’s in the box?

As soon as you take off the top box which says photography redefined, you will come across the handset itself. The smartphone is launched in Cosmic Black and Aurora Dawn color. I got the Aurora edition which is 12GB and 256GB of RAM. So yes, 12GB of RAM on a smartphone. Yes we live in that world, and you know what? This phone also comes with virtual RAM technology. We will be testing that how it works and how much additional RAM do we get in that.

Vivo X70 Pro Unbox

After taking off the box that you can’t remove, you just put it on the side, and then you get a clear TPU case which is always a nice addition because you don’t have to run and find a custom fitting case. You also get the usual documentation, SIM ejector tool, then the Type-C good quality thick cable for charging the smartphone. You also get the Vivo flash charger which is now 44W of flash charging. Then, you get the Type-C hands-free, which is good to see as most of the brands have stopped supplying the same. So with this one, you are sorted. You get a Type-C 3.5mm adapter which is really thoughtful of Vivo. If you want small, medium, large, you can change the tip so that you have that custom fitting of earphones. That’s all you get in the box.

Now what we are going to do is check out the device and see how it is!

Design

The brand have continued the legacy of providing best looking devices. And by seeing Vivo X70 Pro – I have to give it to Vivo. The look and feel of the Vivo X70 Pro is seriously nice. It has the curved glass with glass-metal sandwiched design. The frame on the device is of metal, which is really very nice. It does look like matte texture but when you touch the phone, it’s like satin and really nice to touch. The handset is around 186 gram, so this one is light. It feels very nice in hand and is a perfect fit. And the color I got – that multicolor design – is very beautiful. It shows different colors as light falls on it – Blueish, Greenish, etc. So that’s nice.

The handset sports a hefty rectangular-shaped camera bump placed at the top-left corner of the rear panel which houses the Zeiss sensor along with the branding and Zeiss T* coating. A lot of lens is being added and it is almost the pro level now. It comes with the gimbal system, the Zeiss technology, and also there’s an ultra-zoom sensor that Vivo is calling it the cloud valley design.

Vivo X70 Pro Design

Now if you turn around the device, you can also see on the sides, it’s really curvy, very nice to grip and also it is flat on the top and the bottom which makes it really nice to feel. The hand feel usage is also nice while using the phone for longer hours. It is not that heavy to use. On the top, ‘Professional Photography’ is mentioned and you bet, it is definitely a professional photography smartphone. Few additions on the top is – the secondary microphone and there’s another dot and that dot is for the infrared sensor. Yes, this phone can control all your devices that uses infrared remote control via your TV, your AC or your home theatre or any set top box you use. The smartphone turns into a smart remote or a smart home controller which is really nice. That’s a nice addition. In terms of dimension, this smartphone is only 7.99 mm thin and also comes at only 183 grams and you know why. If this phone feels so mice to hold that’s because of the 3D curve display it has.

Now if you move on to the right side, you will see the volume rocker and the power key. The thin buttons really nicely done. You also will see a lot of lines across the phone that is the 5G antenna lines. The company made sure that they give you ample amount of bands for 5G connectivity whenever 5G launches in India. On the bottom, you get the speaker grill, the USB Type-C port, a microphone and the SIM tray slot. On the left, there are no buttons. It’s a clean sweep. So that was all about the design of the Vivo X70 Pro.

Display

Vivo X70 Pro Screeen

It’s not the back, it’s not the sides. You will be looking at the display throughout. So, Vivo X70 Pro supports a bright 6.56-inch full HD+ (2376×1080p) AMOLED HDR10+ display. It has a 120Hz of refresh rate which significantly enhances the user experience during watching videos, playing games, and browsing the net. The white balance and amazing contrast ratios on the AMOLED screen are quite apparent whether you are using it to watch HD+ videos or just browsing the web. In terms of display protection, it comes with squat sensation up display protection and also has a peak brightness of 1300 nits, which is really bright. So whether you are inside or outdoor, you should not bother.

Performance

Now let’s talk about the performance of the Vivo X70 Pro. We have seen – it has got flagship camera and flagship design, but what about the performance? Well, you will be happy to know that performance is also flagship level. The processing power on this smartphone is MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor, which is custom made for Vivo. It has 3.0GHz of over locking speed and comes with a 6 nanometer technology. In terms of RAM, you get 12GB of RAM with 4GB of extra virtual RAM, making it a 16GB of RAM. That’s much more than you may have on your laptop, right? Apart from that, you get 256GB of UFS, 3.1 storage. It also comes with 240Hz of touch sampling rate.

Vivo X70 Pro Camera

I played the Battlegrounds India on the device for around 45 minutes, and it was a fun experience. The device fitted perfectly in my hands and remained reasonably cool. So all the gamers out there, you would love the performance of this device. In terms of operating system, you get Funtouch OS 12 based on Android 11. With Funtouch OS 12, you get new dynamic widgets, a lot of enhancements, and also a lot of features for your game mode and music mode.

Cameras

Let’s talk about what this phone is famous for – Photography Redefined. It comes with five cameras. One at the front, four at the back. The front camera selfie shooter is 32-megapixel, now that’s a massive number. When you talk about the rear, on top is the 50-megapixel gimbal stabilization camera. Apart from that, you get a 12-megapixel ultra wide sensor that also double it as a macro mode. You also get a 12-megapixel 2x portrait sensor. Lastly, you get an 8-megapixel periscope camera lens that can do 60x hyper zoom and 5x optical zoom. It also has periscope OIS and what really differentiates it from other smartphone is the Zeiss. The partnership they have with Zeiss really makes a difference. The Zeiss coating helps the smartphone click pictures without any glare, which is a great feature. Whether you are in sunny day or late at night, this will click crisp photos. The Vivo Zeiss partnership is not limited to just the lens coating, it also gives you a lot of modes. These modes help you click better pictures and can give different aspects to the picture and that is because of the Zeiss lens modes. The Zeiss style portrait comes in four different modes including bioter, the sagton planner and sonar the primary sensor.

Vivo X70 Pro SampleVivo X70 Pro Camera Sample

Camera Sample

The Vivo X70 Pro comes with a customized Sony IMX 766 way sensor and has five axis gimbal stabilization by Vivo. The secondary 12-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a third 12-megapixel telephoto portrait lens is a Sony IMX 663 sensor with 2x optical zoom and 50mm focal length and finally you get an 8-megapixel periscope lens with 5x optical zoom and optical image stabilization included. In terms of other features on the Vivo X70 Pro camera, you get Pro Sports mode, Cinema Mode, video recording up to 4K at 60fps, Astro mode, Tripod mode, 9 stylish night filters, Beauty mode, standard and super stabilization, Supermoon mode and a 50-megapixel ultra HD mode.

The Vivo X70 Pro has the best camera in under 50k price segment right now in India and there is not any phone that can match the imaging capabilities at this price segment. With great daylight shots, macros ultra wide selfies and low light performance, it excels in almost all areas. There is hardly anything to complain about in this phone. In terms of camera department, Vivo has nailed it with best camera phone below 50k right now. The Zeiss partnership has made this even better. Now if you are on a look out for a good premium phone with exceptional camera abilities, the Vivo X70 Pro is the one to look for.

Battery

Well, Vivo X70 Pro has definitely a lot of power. In fact, I am talking about the battery right now. The battery of this smartphone comes with 4,450mAh. Now that’s good amount of battery life, good enough for a slim phone to deliver a full day of battery life. With so much battery capacity, users can consume content excessively without hassle, and the device can stay active for more than a day. But how fast does it charge. Thankfully, we were supplied a 44W fast charging technology charger which is Vivo flash charge. For me, it took around 45 minutes to charge the battery from 7% to 100%, which according to our tests, it’s decently fast. In terms of connectivity, you get 5G, 4G, VoLTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC.

Price

The Vivo X70 Pro for the 8GB + 128GB version starts at a price of Rs 46,990, which seems slightly high considering the chipset being used. There is no doubt that an AMOLED 120Hz panel is a staple for quite a few budget flagships these days at much lower prices. However, the Vivo X70 Pro shines in the camera department and a design that, in this price, is best in the market for its price.

Verdict

Vivo X70 Pro (Design)

Without any doubt, the Vivo X70 Pro is worth recommending. With its stunning design and a full list of features, it will hit the right note. Whether you are an influencer or a hardcore gamer, this handset from the house of Vivo is all set to fulfil your ever-changing needs. Its AMOLED 120Hz display is a treat for most eyes. But the X70 Pro’s camera took all the limelight. I am sure you won’t be disappointed with the camera’s quality. Besides, its battery life manages everything precisely. But at the same time, if you look at the performance department, there are few glitches compared to the competition in the market. For its price, it does feel short in the performance department. Also, the phone doesn’t get stereo speakers, which is a disappointment as it puts a damper on the viewing experience. However, the device covers it up with its stellar optics. In short, if you prefer camera over performance, there’s no better option than Vivo X70 Pro.

Infinix Hot 11S Review: A perfect all-rounder on a budget

0

Transsion group-owned Infinix seems to be following the footsteps of Xiaomi and Realme by launching back-to-back smartphones with good specs in the sub-11K segment. The recently-launched Hot 11S (along with Hot 11) with MediaTek Helio G88 chipset, 50MP primary camera and 5,000mAh battery, shows how serious the brand Infinix is with its enticing features at Rs 10,999. The smartphone comes in 7 Degrees Purple, Green Wave and Polar Black colour options, and we had the middle one for test. Let’s see where this handset stands on different parameters of excellence in this review.

Design

Keeping up with the trend of offering good-looking phones, Infinix has worked in this department, this time too. The all-new Hot 11S is a bit different from its predecessors and looks decent in your hands, though it’s a bit heavy and you’ll have to struggle to operate it with a single hand. It’s made up of a plastic body with a glossy back panel, having a fingerprint-resistant coating which is not a new thing on the Infinix phone. The new wavy gradient pattern makes it look distinctive.

The back panel sports an AI triple rear camera set up with a huge circular main camera that does make this phone stand out from the crowd. The camera module doesn’t protrude out of the body too much. There’s a fingerprint sensor in the middle of the back near the camera module and an Infinix branding at the left towards the bottom. Up front, there is a punch-hole display with slim bezels around.

There is a sim card tray on the left side of the device, whereas on the right you get the volume rocker and power button. While the top of the phone is basic, there is a 3.5 mm audio jack, a Type-C charging port and a speaker grille at the bottom of the device.

Overall, the smartphone offers an apt weight distribution and a narrow frame that provides an easy grip in your hands, although it is by no means a one-hand device. The smudge-free back panel is definitely a good thing over here, as a budget smartphone rarely provides such a panel.

Display

The smartphone offers a 6.78-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,480 pixels) LTPS LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 180Hz touch sampling rate, a 20.5:9 aspect ratio, a 90.5% screen-to-body ratio and NEG Dinorex T2X-1 glass protection. As mentioned above, it comes with a punch hole (housing the selfie camera) and is surrounded by slim bezel which is a bit thick at the chin. The display has 500 nits brightness that offers crystal-clear images and good viewing angles.

Taken as a whole, the display provides decent brightness in the sunlight and is good for gamers as well as watching movies and other video content.

Platform

The newly-launched Hot 11S is powered by MediaTek G88 SoC, which is also present in Xiaomi Redmi 10 Prime, launched earlier with a starting price of Rs 12,499. While the Redmi 10 Prime comes in two RAM/ROM configurations – 4GB/6GB and 64GB/128GB, the Infinix Hot 11S features simply 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which is expandable up to 256GB via microSD card. Coming to the software, the smartphone runs Android 11 based XOS 7.6 skin on top.

In terms of performance, it’s a good multitasking device, as there were no lags while playing high-end games and watching videos. High-end games like Call of Duty got downloaded in less than five minutes. Icing on the cake is Mediatek Hyper Engine 2.0 Game Boost Technology along with the Dar-Link Game Boost Technology that ensures high-speed gaming. However, there were some heating issues while using the phone uninterruptedly for more than an hour.

On the software front, the interface of the Hot 11S is not clear, as it comes with several third-party apps such as PhoneCloner, Hi Translate, Welife, WeZone, XClub, X Theme, XShare, Yo Party, Phone Master, Boomplay, Calcare, AHA Games, Beez, and Palm Store. However, you can remove them if there is no utility of these apps.

Thankfully, the handset comes with some useful modes such as WhatsApp, which provides data to only Whatsapp messenger and stops to others. Besides, there is game mode, screencast and more. If we talk about the audio, there is a little improvement, with the smartphone now using the earpiece as a secondary speaker, which is definitely not bad, as dual speakers with DTS surround sound makes some sense.

Cameras

As for optics, the triple rear camera set up at the back sports a 50-megapixel primary sensor paired with an f/1.6 aperture lens, a 2-megapixel secondary sensor, and an AI-powered lens with a quad-LED flash. For selfies and video call, the smartphone features an 8-megapixel AI camera with a dual-LED flash on the front.

Feature-wise, you’ll get various modes like AI Camera, Beauty, Super night, Short Video, and HDR in the rear camera. The front camera also has few modes such as AR Shot, Portrait, Beauty, AI Cam and Short Video.

Interestingly, this is the first Infinix smartphone to house a 50-megapixel rear camera. If we look at the competition in the market, 50MP primary lens is also seen on the Redmi 10 Prime (starts at Rs 12,499) and Realme 8i (at Rs 13,999) which are priced higher than the Infinix Hot 11S.

The rear camera is simply amazing, in terms of performance. Shots taken during the daytime are sharp and full of details and displays punchy colours that are perfect for social media posts. Although exposure calibration is not very good in low-light conditions, you’ll get decent images at night with the Super night mode which takes little time in post-processing.

The 8MP selfie shooter on the front is satisfactory. It produces decent looking photos in the well-lit conditions, however struggles a bit in the low-light conditions as the images lack details. Although the dedicated LED flash up front does its job well, Infinix should have worked more on the front camera.

Battery

Having a mammoth 5,000mAh battery is simply not a USP of this device but also performance-oriented. It comes with a Type-C 18W charger and takes nearly one hour to charge completely. The battery goes on for two days with normal usage, whereas it exhausts in 24 hours on heavy usage. Appreciatively, the smartphone also comes with Ultra Power and Power Boost features that are designed to save battery. It automatically disconnects power after 100 per cent of charging, which is a nice addition.

Conclusion

The Infinix Hot 11S flaunts a robust design, looks nice, offers smooth performance and has decent cameras and battery life. Having a 50MP primary sensor makes it stand out from the crowd. On the flipside, it has a more cluttered UI and hence, the software experience does leave a bit to be looked-for. Although it has a tough competition to face with Redmi 10 Prime and Realme 8i, the Infinix Hot 11S justifies its price with features that consumers wildly look for in the given segment.

Chess is a fantastic game that teaches you strategy, deep thinking, patience and in the CSL format teamwork. It will do our country good if through tournaments like the Chess Super League, we can get more of India’s youth interested in this phenomenal game. Apart from the players themselves, the team owners along with the storytellers and Samay and Sagar did a splendid job in keeping up the fun and the serious element of the league in a great balance. We look forward to season 2 of CSL very soon,” said Akshat Rathee, Managing Director, Nodwin Gaming.
