“What is going on?” This appears to be the constant mood of all Meta and its platform users since last week. It was just days ago that Meta’s messaging app WhatsApp had faced hours long global outrage and now it was Instagram’s turn. Meta’s photo sharing platform on Monday was down with a wide number of users complaining of several issues with the app. Since the morning of 31st October, Instagram was crashing for millions as users face suspended accounts around the world. While many complained of having their accounts suspended without any reason, others were logged out of the app on their smart devices.

The issues with the photo sharing platform were not limited to the app. The web version of the social media platform was also glitching.

Instagram was quick to acknowledge the issues and took to Twitter to address the user’s concerns. The official Instagram handle tweeted, “We’re aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We’re looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience,”

Although Instagram responded to the concerns and ensured the users that it is working on getting the issues resolved as soon as possible, the numbers on the platform saw some serious dip. Instagram is no longer only a social media platform. It is globally used by users from all walks of life for e-commerce, reels, personal blogging, news sharing and more. The platform has long transformed into a one-stop shop for every type of entertainment, information, business, arts and data. A one-minute outage can also have a severe impact on the user base as they face a huge negative impact on their revenue.

Instagram, after a few hours, shared another update about the situation. It tweeted, “We’ve resolved this bug now – it was causing people in different parts of the world to have issues accessing their accounts and caused a temporary change for some in a number of followers. Sorry!”

According to Downdetector, the online platform that offers real-time information about the performance of various websites and services, more than 2200 user reports were filed on its platform about the Instagram outage. Downdetector further said that the number of users facing issues in logging in was in the thousands. While many other users were reportedly getting a server error alert when they open the app or even the web version of the platform. Most users reported some other type of issues in accessing the social media platform.

Those who could open the app or web version of the platform were displayed a message for a suspended account upon launch. According to many such other users whose accounts were showing suspended alerts, the social media platform was showing them the reason behind suspension as that they did not adhere to community guidelines. The suspension didn’t seem like a technical glitch because the platform server also gave the users a time period of 30 days with the reason of suspension to disagree with the platform’s decision and go through another review. Many users took to Twitter to report the issue to Instagram. One such user tweeted, “@instagram what is going on? My account literally got suspended for no reason I did not violate any community guidelines, and when I try to verify the code it’s just giving me a loading error. Is anybody else having this problem? #Instagram #instagramdown”.
