Google is reportedly working on a convenient feature for its Chrome password manager aimed at users who share online accounts with family members.
This upcoming addition to Google Family Groups is set to simplify how passwords are shared securely among group members, potentially transforming the way families manage their collective online access.
Traditionally, sharing login information for shared accounts has been cumbersome, often leading to frustration during time-sensitive moments.
However, recent discoveries by TheSPAndroid indicate that Google Chrome, both on desktop and through updates in Google Play Services (version 24.09.12 190400–610662703), is gearing up to introduce password sharing capabilities within family groups.
This move ensures that Android users will also benefit from this enhanced functionality.
Screenshots from the early iterations of this feature reveal a new “Share” button positioned next to the familiar “Edit” and “Delete” options under saved account details.
Tapping this button prompts a message confirming the user’s intention to share the password exclusively with members of their Google Family Group, a setting manageable through Google account preferences.
For recipients, the process appears streamlined as well.
Upon a password being shared with them, they might encounter a tooltip during their visit to the respective website on their device, alerting them that login credentials are available for use.
It’s important to note that, as of now, this feature seems to focus solely on password sharing and does not extend to passkeys.
As this feature continues to develop, it promises to make digital life more convenient for families, offering a secure and straightforward method to manage shared online resources.
“Accounts that are part of a family group will soon have the option to share usernames and passwords for a particular website or service directly from Google Password Manager,” the Google blog post noted.
“Whether two members of a family are coordinating with daycare through a single account, or a child is letting a parent access their school assignments, sharing passwords securely has never been easier,” it continued.
How to share passwords with family members via Password Manager
Step 1: Head to Settings on your Chrome browser desktop or mobile.
Step 2: Look for the ‘Autofill and password’ tab on the left sidebar and tap on it.
Step 3: Tap on Google Password Manager.
Step 4: Look for the saved password that you want to share and tap on it.
Step 5: Now, you should see the Share button next to the Edit and Delete options. Tap on it to Share the password with the family plan members.
Apart from Chrome, Google Chat is also on the brink of another update, following a series of enhancements including a new logo and various design changes over the past few months.
This latest feature aims to streamline communication within the app, making it easier for users to identify and prioritize unread messages in group chats by displaying participant avatars, similar to functionalities found in platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams.
However, it’s not specified if these avatars will remain visible after the messages have been read, a feature offered by some of its competitors.
Ensuring easy access for all users, Google Chat’s new feature does not require any account-based settings adjustments for activation.
