Passthrough and Ecosystem
In a recent Instagram video, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivered a pointed critique of the Apple Vision Pro, positioning the Meta Quest 3 as a superior alternative both in terms of value and performance.
Priced at $500, Zuckerberg championed the Quest 3 over the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, challenging prevailing narratives that have favored the latter based on its premium price point and Apple’s brand prestige.
Zuckerberg’s video critique serves not just as a product comparison but as a broader commentary on the tech industry’s valuation of price over practicality.
He expressed concern over media portrayals that automatically crown the Vision Pro as the superior choice, simply due to its association with Apple and its higher price tag.
By laying out his perspective, Zuckerberg tried to underline the Quest 3’s competitive strengths, drawing attention to Meta’s achievements in developing a product that holds its own against a tech titan like Apple.
Further elaborating on his stance, Zuckerberg doesn’t shy away from addressing the larger ecosystem battle between open and closed platforms, a recurring theme when talking about the Cupertino giant.
He reminisced about Apple’s approach with the iPhone, which, despite the prevalence of Android devices, has carved out a significant niche thanks to its integrated ecosystem.
However, his main qualm has always been with Apple “fanboys” phenomenon, where brand loyalty often overshadows the consideration of other technologies.
Beond, dubbed as the world’s first premium leisure airline, is stepping up its game by offering passengers an exclusive in-flight experience with Apple’s Vision Pro starting this July.
Launched in 2022 and based in the Maldives, Beond currently flies three routes, exclusively outside the U.S.
CEO Tero Taskila emphasizes that this initiative is all about enhancing the anticipation and excitement of passengers en route to the Maldives, adding a touch of luxury from the moment they board.
While Beond is yet to spell out who exactly qualifies as “select passengers” for this perk, it’s intriguing since the airline boasts a business-class-only model with beds for seats.
However, questions loom regarding the Vision Pro’s practicality, notably its 2.5-hour battery life against Beond’s longer flight durations and concerns over potential motion sickness.
Mark Zuckerberg released a video reviewing the Apple Vision Pro, stating that the Meta Quest 3 offers better value and quality despite its lower price.
Zuckerberg aimed to challenge the automatic assumption that the more expensive Vision Pro is superior, highlighting Quest 3’s competitive features and Meta’s innovation.
Zuckerberg touched on the ongoing debate between open and closed ecosystems, mentioning Apple’s dominance in developed markets despite Android’s broader global usage.
Beond, a premium leisure airline, plans to offer select passengers the use of Apple Vision Pro on flights, aiming to elevate the pre-arrival experience to the Maldives.
Yes, there are practical concerns, including the Vision Pro’s 2.5-hour battery life, which may not cover Beond’s longer flights, and potential motion sickness for users.
