A new dummy unit of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra, designed straight from early CAD renderings, has shown up online, giving tech enthusiasts their first look at Samsung’s new-generation flagship in actual form. The new prototype has a horizontal camera bar that moves away from Samsung’s signature individual camera rings. The new setup is reportedly identical to the back design of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro, hinting that more premium smartphone manufacturers are embracing centralised camera islands.
The leaked device is about the same size as its predecessor but maintains the built-in S Pen slot and significantly alters the top rear region. The update frees up internal space under the camera bump while rendering existing cases unusable. This revised Ultra model is expected to make the market early next year, with a formal announcement coming in January or February 2027.

Early information with the unit hints at significant hardware changes to boost performance. The Galaxy S27 Ultra phone still has a slot for the built-in S Pen along the bottom edge, with a USB-C connector, SIM tray and speaker grille. The camera system is notably being slimmed down from four lenses at the back to three, with a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultrawide lens, and 50MP 5x telephoto lens, dropping the dedicated 3x telephoto camera.

The new dummy of Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is quite close in size (163.76 x 78.25 x 7.97mm) to the Galaxy S26 Ultra (163.6 x 78.1 x 7.9mm). However, the major camera redesign means previous Galaxy S26 Ultra covers won’t suit the new model. The new configuration eliminates the huge camera blockage that didn’t allow MagSafe and Qi2 battery packs to rest flat against the rear of the S26 Ultra.

Early design comparisons of the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra, Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro hint at a rising industry trend of large camera islands. Samsung looks to be going toward Apple’s combined module approach, away from its basic individual lens configuration. Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel 11 Pro is refining its iconic edge-to-edge camera visor. All three smartphone makers are trending toward flatter side frames, better Qi2 magnetic compatibility and accommodating bigger periscope zoom lenses.
The Pixel 11 Pro has a pill-shaped island, smooth, flat lenses and no table wobbling. The Galaxy S27 Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro have elevated, stepped camera plateaus. Samsung’s camera island is much bigger than the iPhone’s, giving it a more dominant presence across the rear.
When Will the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Launch?
Samsung has not made an official announcement on a release date. However, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is rumoured to be released early next year at the Samsung’s annual Galaxy Unpacked event. Based on past launch patterns, the upcoming S27 Ultra smartphone is anticipated to launch somewhere between January and February 2027.
