Samsung is slated to maintain a very similar camera configuration for its upcoming flagship foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 9. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 9 may keep a dual-camera setup and skip a dedicated telephoto lens. At the same time, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra will reuse its 200MP primary camera, 50MP ultrawide sensor and 3x optical telephoto zoom lens.
Samsung is doing this to keep manufacturing costs down and ensure hardware uniformity throughout its range. But the move might disappoint those anticipating big camera upgrades on the high-end foldables.

Galaxy Z Fold 9 Could Retain Its Dual Rear Camera Setup
Recent leaks suggest that the standard Galaxy Z Fold 9 will continue to include a basic dual-camera setup on the back. It is rumoured to pair a 50MP primary sensor with a 50MP ultrawide lens, cutting out a dedicated telephoto camera completely. If so, those looking for dedicated optical zoom will have to look elsewhere or shell out extra for the Ultra option.

If you want flagship-level photography, Samsung could be saving big camera upgrades for a possible Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra model. There are rumours that the Ultra may come with a flagship 200 MP main camera and a 50 MP ultra-wide lens. That lets Samsung deliver ultra-premium mobile photography while making the basic Z Fold 9 compact and accessible.
Galaxy Z Fold9 Could Bring Back Under-Display Camera
The other big change for the inner screen is the rumoured return of the Under-Display Camera (UDC). Samsung is reportedly combining new OLED panel technology, such as the M16 panel, with updated processing algorithms. This would allow the lens to disappear behind the screen, providing users with an uninterrupted edge-to-edge viewing experience for reading or watching films.

Why Galaxy Z Fold9 Camera Upgrades May Disappoint
When a new phone launches, users expect new upgrades and features. Smartphone fans wait for each new generation to provide bigger sensors, better zoom and clearer photographs. But, because the 50MP and 200MP camera systems are reused, there are minimal to no upgrades to the hardware level for light capture or physical optics. Samsung appears more focused on making the device thinner, improving battery efficiency and using AI processing to improve picture quality than making technological leaps.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold9 Launch Timeline
Samsung may announce the Galaxy Z Fold 9 at the Galaxy Unpacked event in mid-to-late July 2027, with worldwide retail availability starting in August 2027.
