Rollout of Apple’s AI Features Facing Delays, Some Arriving in 2025: All You Need to Know

0

Highlights

  • Some AI features for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia delayed to 2025
  • Siri enhancements like contextual awareness and natural language responses arriving late
  • Staggered rollout plan for AI features with previews for select users
  • Email categorization in Mail app and Swift Assist in Xcode to launch in late 2024

Apple went big on AI features for its operating systems during its Worldwide Developers Conference last week.

However, a new report says that not all of those AI capabilities will be ready when iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia are launched later this year.

Some AI features, especially pertaining to virtual assistant Siri, may only come in 2025.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple prefers stuffing the first-ever developer beta with the maximum number of new features.

That allows developers time to integrate the new experiences into their apps.

A Staggered Rollout Approach

Rollout of Apple’s AI Features Facing Delays

Instead of a simultaneous launch, it is reportedly said that Apple has considered a staggered roll-out plan.

Additionally, these delayed AI features will arrive in preview form and will be available only to a few users before they are launched more widely.

This will also deliver a host of other advantages to Apple.

It enables good resource management, prevents over-stressing the staffers, and delivers quality in features.

Time investment is also needed to a great extent in training AI across multiple languages and building out cloud infrastructure

This additional development time may also have made sure the machines did not spit out weird AI hallucinations, wherechatbots respond with nonsensical answers.

Third-party AI chatbot developers, such as Google’s Gemini AI, Anthropic’s Claude, and Chinese firms like Baidu and Alibaba, continue to be in Apple’s sought-after feature plans.

What’s Coming When?

Siri enhancements like contextual awareness and natural language responses arriving late

Some AI capabilities will not materialize until late 2024, which includes some developed for Apple’s Mail app, which will offer email users email categorization into tabs representing such things as newsletters and shopping, among others.

The Swift Assist cloud-based AI programming companion to Xcode will arrive late in 2024.

Most of the upgrades to Siri, however, are unlikely to reach users until 2025.

The list includes improved contextual awareness, natural language responses, semantic understanding of on-device content and personal data, native integration into apps, and lastly, computer vision for reading open screens.

Despite the delays, several Apple Intelligence features will still make it into the initial releases ofiOS 18,iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year.

FAQs

Why are some of Apple’s AI features delayed until 2025?

Apple is taking additional time to ensure quality, resource management, and to avoid AI hallucinations, leading to a staggered rollout of some AI capabilities.

Which AI features are expected to arrive late in 2024?

AI features for Apple’s Mail app, including email categorization, and Swift Assist for Xcode are expected to be available in late 2024.

What AI upgrades to Siri are being delayed until 2025?

Delayed Siri upgrades include improved contextual awareness, natural language responses, semantic understanding, app integration, and computer vision for reading screens.

How will Apple roll out the delayed AI features?

Apple plans a staggered rollout with previews available to select users before a wider release, ensuring better resource management and feature quality.

GPT-4 Passes Turing Test, Marking Milestone in AI Advancements: Should You Be Worried?

0

Highlights

  • GPT-4 deceives 54% of participants into believing it is human
  • Study involved 500 participants and comparisons with ELIZA and GPT-3.5
  • Raises concerns about AI’s impact on digital interactions in sensitive areas
  • Highlights the importance of understanding human values in AI development

According to researchers, the highly advanced language model GPT-4 has passed what is considered a milestone in artificial intelligence by passing the iconic Turing test—fooling people more than 50% of the time into believing its responses were human.

The Turing test, proposed by Alan Turing, the pioneer of computing, in 1950, is a benchmark of machine intelligence where an AI system must be quite indistinguishable from a human in its responses in a conversation.

How ChatGPT Beat the Turing Test

AI chatbots becoming increasingly like humans

A study posted on the arXiv preprint server had scientists ask 500 participants to have brief 5-minute conversations with a human, the 1960s ELIZA AI program, and the more modern GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 language models that power ChatGPT.

The Turing Test

Astonishingly, 54% of evaluators rated the responses of GPT-4 as generated by an interlocutor who was human.

That’s compared to the archaic ELIZA being thought to be AI 78% of the time, GPT-3.5 scoring 50/50, and the real human scoring 67%.

“Machines can confabulate, express cognitive biases, and are becoming deceptively human-like,” explained AI researcher Nell Watson. “These elements mean quirks are emerging in AI akin to human foibles, making them more human than previous approaches limited to canned responses.”

The study raises long-standing concerns about the possible ultrarealistic AI that might be left unchecked to create general disturbances in society.

AI vs Humans

Other experts, however, say that per se, this Turing test is too simplistic and has emotional intelligence and empathy playing bigger roles than raw cognitive ability.

“Capabilities are a small part of AI’s value – understanding human values, preferences and boundaries is essential for serving as a reliable ‘concierge’ for our lives,” Watson added.

She added that the newer models of GPT leaped beyond all constraints developed for ELIZA to synthesize new responses, each context-aware and related to almost any topic—very impressive contrasts to hand-crafted systems bound by human developers.

Can This Be a Problem?

Raises concerns about AI’s impact on digital interactions in sensitive areas

As AI’s conversational skills blur the line with humans, the study foreshadows increasing uncertainty in digital interactions across sensitive areas like healthcare and counseling.

It may beget a “paranoia” over an interlocutor’s true nature without robust authentication.

While debate continues over benchmarking machine intelligence, the researchers argue this breakthrough shows GPT-4 exhibiting key hallmarks of human-level discourse – a significant step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).

FAQs

What is the Turing test, and how did GPT-4 pass it?

The Turing test, proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, measures machine intelligence by testing if an AI system’s responses are indistinguishable from a human’s. GPT-4 passed by convincing 54% of participants that its responses were human.

How was the study conducted to evaluate GPT-4’s performance?

Researchers asked 500 participants to have 5-minute conversations with a human, the 1960s ELIZA AI program, and the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 language models. Participants rated the responses, with GPT-4 being identified as human-like 54% of the time.

What concerns arise from AI passing the Turing test?

The study raises concerns about the potential for ultrarealistic AI to create societal disturbances, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare and counseling, where it may cause uncertainty about the true nature of digital interactions.

What do experts say about the implications of AI passing the Turing test?

Experts suggest that the Turing test is too simplistic and that AI’s value lies in understanding human values, preferences, and boundaries. This understanding is crucial for AI to serve reliably in various aspects of life.

Highlights

  • Realme GT 6 shipment stolen en route to Spain, causing launch delay
  • Incident involved a robbery at gunpoint on May 29th
  • Leaked specs: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display
  • European pricing: €700 for 12/256GB, €825 for 16/512GB

In a highly unusual incident, Realme’s entire initial shipment of GT 6 smartphones destined for Spain has been stolen while in transit, forcing a delay in the hotly-anticipated mid-ranger’s European rollout.

The official Realme Spain account took to Twitter/X to share the disappointing news, explaining that despite exhaustive efforts, they have been unable to recover the missing devices after they were stolen somewhere along the journey to the country.

“For reasons beyond our control, our Realme GT 6 phones have been stolen on their way to Spain. We have not been able to recover them despite having done everything possible,” the statement read. As a result, Realme apologized that they cannot “guarantee the in-store experience we would like during launch week.”

While device thefts are not unheard of, it is extremely rare for an entire shipment to vanish, especially for a major product launch.

Spanish reports suggest the heist occurred on May 29th when the truck driver was robbed at gunpoint and the vehicle’s contents emptied.

As the driver stopped at a service area to take some rest, the robbers emptied all the cargo.

The Realme GT 6’s unveiling in neighbouring Portugal may also face disruptions due to this incident.

Realme had ambitious plans for Europe after shipping over 200 million phones globally in just five years to become the 5th fastest brand to reach that milestone.

Specs and Pricing Leak

Realme GT 6 Specs and Pricing Leak

Meanwhile, leaked details have emerged about the GT 6’s specifications and European pricing.

The phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, paired with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

It will feature a 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display, a 5,500mAh battery with 100W charging, and an upgraded triple camera setup led by a 50MP main shooter, accompanied by a 50MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and an 8MP ultrawide.

Thieves target an entire truck carrying Realme GT 6 units to Spain.

Pricing in Romania is listed as €700 for the 12/256GB variant and €825 for the top 16/512GB model.

In Poland, the higher storage option is priced around €800.

Despite the turbulent launch, the Realme GT 6 was highly anticipated as a potential “flagship killer” priced substantially under €1,000.

As Realme works to get the rollout back on track, customers will be hoping the impressive specs can make up for this extremely rare and disruptive theft incident.

Public Trust in AI-Powered News Remains Low, Reuters Study Finds

0

Highlights

  • 63% of UK respondents and 52% of US respondents uneasy about AI-produced news
  • Misinformation concerns rise to 59% globally, 81% in South Africa
  • Paid digital news subscriptions stagnant at 17% over three years
  • News influencers increasingly shape news consumption on platforms like TikTok

As newsrooms globally work on how to incorporate artificial intelligence as a means of supporting reporting, a major new study has unearthed widespread public skepticism about deploying AI for news production

According to the annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report, fresh challenges are hitting media organizations already mired in struggling to engage audiences and lift revenues.

The far-reaching report, canvassing nearly 100,000 people across 47 countries, painted a picture of public concerns growing about AI’s role in journalism and the spread of misinformation online.

AI Mistrust Especially High for Political Coverage

Public Trust in AI-Powered News Remains Low, Reuters Study Finds

The survey showed that 52 percent of the US respondents, and almost two-thirds in the UK, at 63 percent, said they would be uneasy about news produced mostly by AI, especially for sensitive topics such as politics.

“It was surprising to see the level of suspicion,” said Nic Newman, the report’s lead author. “People broadly had fears about what might happen to content reliability and trust.”

While less opposed to AI enhancing journalistic efficiency behind the scenes, the findings suggest a general public wariness around allowing algorithms too much editorial control.

Misinformation Fears Persist

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism released its annual “Digital News Report” highlights a growing global concern about the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production and the spread of misinformation.

The research also found, separately, that concerns about false or misleading news online increased 3 percentage points year on year to 59% globally.

That number jumped to 81 percent in South Africa and 72 percent in the U.S – both countries are holding votes this year.

Paid News Subscriptions Stagnate

One of the key findings of the report is the rising concern about fake news.

Another key challenge identified was the stagnation in paid digital news subscriptions following pandemic-driven growth.

Across 20 countries studied, just 17% of respondents paid for online news – a proportion unchanged over the past three years.

In the U.S., a significant 46% of those with subscriptions paid discounted trial rates rather than full prices, adding further strain on news outlets’ reader revenue streams.

The Rise of News Influencers

According to the survey, 52% of U.S. respondents and 63% of UK respondents said they would be uncomfortable with news produced mostly with AI.

It has been noticed that individual personalities and commentators play an increasingly major role in shaping news consumption—more so among young audiences, particularly on platforms such as TikTok.

Completed by more than 5,600 news users on TikTok, 57 percent said they followed individual creators primarily for updates, against journalists or brands at 34 percent.

The report surveyed 2,000 people in each country.

As Newman summarized, “Newsrooms need to build a direct relationship with their audiences while also strategically using the platforms to connect with people who are trickier to reach, like younger audiences.”

The findings suggest navigating the new AI reality, retaining trust amidst misinformation fears, monetizing digital subscriptions, and harnessing news influencers’ power will all be key priorities for media in the years ahead.

Apple’s Thinning Obsession: iPhones, MacBooks, and Watches to Become Slimmer

0

Highlights

  • Apple aims for the thinnest and lightest devices across its product lineup.

  • iPhone 17 to feature a radically thin model in 2025.

  • Apple Watch X revamp promises the biggest design changes yet.

  • Siri’s AI capabilities expanding with natural language updates.

Last month’s unveiling of the incredibly slim M4 iPad Pro seems to have kickstarted a new era of design at Apple.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant now aims to make its entire product lineup the “thinnest and lightest” in their respective categories.

Gurman reveals that Apple has major slimming plans for the iPhone, MacBook Pro, and even the Apple Watch over the coming years.

The recently launched 5.1mm-thick iPad Pro is just the start of this new super-slim approach.

The iPhone 17 lineup, expected in 2025, will reportedly include a radically thin model sporting an all-new design.

Apple to introduce a slimmer smartphone with the iPhone 17 series
Apple launched iPad Pro (2024) as its slimmest tablets to date

Apple’s goal is to significantly reduce the thickness compared to current iPhones.

Similarly, upcoming versions of the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro will also get considerably slimmer than their current generations.

However, this obsession with thinness contrasts with the MacBook Pro’s recent redesign in 2021.

That update actually made the laptops thicker and heavier to accommodate features like MagSafe charging, HDMI output, and an SD card slot alongside the switch to Apple Silicon chips.

Apple Watch Redesign on the Horizon

The company is working on thinner MacBook Pro, Apple Watch models

Gurman also reinforces previous reports about a major overhaul for the Apple Watch, dubbed the “Apple Watch X.”

This revamp is tipped to bring the biggest design changes yet to Apple’s wearable.

Siri’s AI Capabilities Expanding

Siri’s AI capabilities expanding with natural language updates

Elsewhere, Siri is lined up for some notable AI-powered improvements before 2024 ends.

A new glowing ring interface showcased at WWDC will modernize the virtual assistant’s look.

Siri will also receive a natural language update to better understand conversational speech, even when users misspeak.

Furthermore, Apple plans to broaden Siri’s knowledge about its own product lineup.

And in a welcome move, users will finally be able to type queries to Siri instead of always having to speak out loud.

Cautious Rollout for AI Features

Apple to introduce a slimmer smartphone with the iPhone 17 series

Like Siri’s upgrades, many of Apple’s other AI-based features won’t arrive until next year.

Gurman reports that Apple is purposely taking a slow, cautious approach to rolling out its AI offerings, aiming to avoid the pitfalls faced by other tech firms with their large language models (LLMs).

However, some AI capabilities are still expected to debut in 2024.

These include AI-generated notification summaries, recaps for webpages, voice memos, notes, and emails, plus an intriguing “Genmoji” feature for AI-generated emoji.

Later in 2024, a redesigned Mail app and the AI-powered Swift Assist coding companion for Xcode are also on the roadmap.
