Apple’s entry-level iPad hasn’t seen an update since 2022, but that’s about to change. Reports suggest that the iPad 11 is set to launch in early 2025, bringing some exciting upgrades to Apple’s most affordable tablet.

An anonymous yet reliable source on X (formerly Twitter) recently revealed that Apple plans to release the iPad 11 early next year coinciding with the launch of iPadOS 18.3. The new software is expected to come pre-installed on the device.

New iPad Expected to Ship With iPadOS 18.3 in Spring 2025

Last week, the first beta of iPadOS 18.3 was made available to developers, although it didn’t introduce any major new features beyond supporting vacuum cleaner robots in the Home app.

However, it’s likely Apple has been working behind the scenes to ensure compatibility with the new iPad 11.

Apple typically releases its “.3” updates for iOS and iPadOS in late January. While Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicted a spring 2025 launch for the iPad 11, this report narrows the timeframe suggesting the device could arrive as early as late January or February.

The iPad 11 is expected to feature Apple’s first wireless modem enabling both Wi-Fi and 5G connectivity. Interestingly, the same leaker revealed that Apple had been testing a prototype of the iPad 11 with the A14 chip from the iPad 10.

However, the final version is expected to include a faster processor possibly the A17 Pro from the iPad mini optimised for Apple Intelligence features.

The current iPad 10 is priced at $349 while discounts bring it as low as $279 on platforms like Amazon. If you’re considering a new iPad, it’s worth waiting for the iPad 11, which will likely offer better performance and connectivity features.

Apple might also unveil a new iPhone SE and an updated iPad Air in spring 2025. It’s possible these products will be announced alongside the iPad 11 either at a special event or through a series of video releases.

Multiple reports have already hinted that Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series is gearing up for an official launch early next year.

However, the latest report from Korea has revealed a release date of February 7, 2025.

Here’s what we know.

According to the Korean news platform FNNews, while Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra on January 22 as per previous rumours, the actual release won’t happen until just over two weeks later.

The report was also shared by the trusted tipster Jukanlosreve on X (formerly Twitter) confirming the authenticity of the update.

This timing is consistent with Samsung’s past launches from last year where the Galaxy S24 was announced on January 17 and released on January 31. As usual, Samsung will open pre-orders ahead of the February 7 release date.

The report also hints that Samsung might go for reservations, which was a trend in some of the recent Galaxy launches. These reservations often come with perks like discounts, extra trade-in credits or other incentives during the pre-order phase.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to offer 16GB of RAM in its 512GB storage variant along with Snapdragon 8 Elite processors across the lineup. Samsung is also expected to debut its next One UI 7 OS update with the Galaxy S25 models.

Additionally, the report confirms that Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S25 “Slim” at the January event.

However, this thinner model will be released at a later date.

One major concern mentioned in the report is pricing. Samsung is reportedly worried about customer resistance as production costs for the Galaxy S25 series have increased.

It’s unclear how these costs will affect the final price of the devices, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

With its official launch set for January and the release date scheduled for February, all fans have to do now is wait for Samsung’s next steps in the coming weeks.

iPhone 18 and Not iPhone 17 to Feature Variable Aperture Lens, Confirms Analyst Kuo

Highlights

  • The variable aperture lens will provide better control over depth of field for flexibility in photography.
  • iPhone 18 is expected in 2026.

Apple has been dedicated to working on delivering advancements in the camera department. In recent times, there’s been a lot of buzz about a variable aperture lens making its way to a future iPhone. However, most opinions differ on when can we exactly expect this to come to fruition.

While some reports point to the iPhone 17 camera, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been insisting that it’s coming with the iPhone 18 for a while now.

Kuo had earlier predicted this major camera upgrade for the iPhone 18 and now he’s reaffirmed that claim.

How Variable Aperture Can Improve Camera System?

A variable aperture lens allows you to control the depth of field (DoF) in your photos. With this feature, you can:

  • Create a shallow DoF to make your subject stand out against a blurred background.
  • Use a medium DoF to highlight the subject while keeping the background somewhat recognisable.
  • Opt for a deep DoF to keep the entire scene in focus.

While Portrait mode simulates this effect using software and does it quite well, a variable aperture achieves it optically providing even better results.

Apple has already offered some control over DoF through the 5x telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro models. However, this effect is due to the longer focal lengths and proximity to the subject. A variable aperture lens would bring greater flexibility to all kinds of shots.

Are We Getting Variable Aperture in iPhone 17 Or iPhone 18?

The Information recently suggested that a variable aperture lens might arrive with the iPhone 17 in 2025. Their report mentioned that “at least one” iPhone 17 model could feature a mechanical system to control aperture size.

Kuo, however, maintains it will debut with the iPhone 18 in 2026. He wrote last month, “One major upgrade for the 2026 high-end iPhone 18 is the wide-camera lens upgrading to a variable aperture camera, significantly enhancing the user photography experience. My latest industry survey indicates Sunny Optical will be the primary shutter supplier (with Luxshare as secondary) and the second variable aperture lens supplier (after Largan Precision).

In one of his more recent reports, Kuo has again doubled down on this timeline. He wrote, “The iPhone 18 Pro’s wide camera will upgrade to variable aperture in 2026. BESI is the supplier of assembly equipment for aperture blades, a critical component of this upgrade.”

Apple has already increased sensor sizes with the iPhone 16 and might do so again with the iPhone 18. While details are still on a very basic stage, one thing is clear is that Apple continues to improvise the camera technology. Whether we get to the tech in iPhone 17 or iPhone 18, it is something only time will tell.

FAQs

Q1. Which iPhone will feature a variable aperture lens?

Answer. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 18 is expected to feature a variable aperture lens, not the iPhone 17.

Q2. What are the benefits of a variable aperture lens in a camera system?

Answer. A variable aperture lens allows control over the depth of field (DoF), enabling users to create shallow, medium or deep DoF effects for more flexible photography.

Q3. When is the variable aperture lens expected to be introduced?

Answer. Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the variable aperture lens will debut with the iPhone 18 in 2026.

Q4. What did Kuo say about the suppliers involved in the variable aperture lens upgrade?

Answer. Kuo mentioned that Sunny Optical will be the primary shutter supplier, with Luxshare as secondary, and the second variable aperture lens supplier will be Largan Precision.

Shazia A is a senior manager at Genpact and has come forward to share her ordeal from December 20 when her cab ride to Gurugram took a terrifying turn. According to Shazia, the driver stopped the cab for strangers and the SOS button on the Ola app failed to work.

“I had a nightmarish experience with OLA CAB yesterday on my way to Gurgaon. Sharing this incident hoping to raise awareness about the safety concerns that passengers especially women might encounter while using these cab services,” she wrote in her post.

Shazia’s ride began at 1:30 PM but things took an unsettling turn after crossing the toll. She noticed the driver slowing down without explanation. “When I asked why, he didn’t respond,” she said.

The situation escalated outside the National Media Centre, where traffic was sparse. Two men appeared ahead of the cab, signalling the driver to stop. To her shock, the driver complied. Soon, two more men on bikes joined them creating a tense and frightening scene.

Adding to her distress, the SOS feature on the Ola app failed during the incident. Despite filing a complaint, Shazia claimed she received no response from the company even 24 hours later.

Child safety groups Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action have jointly published a report uncovering some troubling issues with Apple’s App Store. According to the key findings, numerous apps deemed suitable for children as young as four years old contain inappropriate content.

The investigation was conducted over 24 hours and identified more than 200 apps with “concerning content or features” despite their age ratings. These apps include stranger chat and AI girlfriend apps, games with sexual or violent themes and AI-powered appearance rating apps.

The report focused on apps rated 4+, 9+, and 12+, particularly in categories labelled as “risky.” These included chat apps (like AI and stranger chat platforms), beauty and body image apps, diet and weight loss tools, unfiltered internet access apps and gaming.

The investigation revealed the following key findings –

  • 24 sexual games and 9 stranger chat apps were marked safe for young children.
  • 40 apps providing unfiltered internet access were rated 4+ or 9+.
  • 75 beauty, body image, and weight loss apps carried ratings as low as 4+.
  • 28 shooter and crime games were also deemed appropriate for kids.

According to Heat Initiative, these problematic apps have collectively been downloaded over 550 million times.

The research examined about 800 apps revealing stark differences between categories. Stranger chat apps and games were less likely to have inappropriate age ratings with many marked 17+. In contrast, nearly all apps in the weight loss and unfiltered internet access categories were rated 4+, raising significant safety concerns.

The report urges Apple to strengthen its child safety measures, specifically by using third-party reviewers to verify age ratings before apps go live. Apple can also make the age rating process transparent to consumers.

The report further underscores the importance of ensuring that children are protected from harmful content and features on digital platforms.

At the 55th GST Council meeting on December 21 in Jaisalmer Rajasthan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified the tax rates for popcorn. The decision left many amused and some exasperated prompting a flood of online memes.

The council confirmed that normal popcorn will attract 5% GST, while pre-packaged and ready-to-eat snacks face 12% GST.

However, caramelised popcorn will be taxed at a hefty 18% GST.

According to the government, the reason is purely based on the preparation method, which makes all the difference.

The Finance Minister explained that Pre-packaged ready-to-eat popcorn is mixed with salts and spices, categorised under ‘namkeen’ category and attracting the 5% and 12% taxation.

On the other hand, caramelised popcorns are mixed with sugar, which changes the product category and thus changes the GST rate on them. As per the GST council, it becomes a sugar confectionary after caramelisation, which calls for 18% GST.

The decision sparked a meme storm. One netizen joked, “India here acting like their whole economy depends on salted or caramelized popcorn.” Another quipped, “Pani puri khatta 5% GST. Pani puri meetha 18% GST.” A playful dig read, “Chennai sambar is namkeen, hence 5% GST. Bengaluru sambar is sweet, hence 18% GST.”

One user humorously remarked, “Hope the FM doesn’t tax memes in the future. Or this account will be gone for good.”

Startup Founder’s Viral Post Urges Innovators to Leave India

image
The new deleted Reddit post by u/anonymous_batm_an.

While popcorn taxes grabbed headlines and captured the imagination of meme spreaders, a viral Reddit post by a startup founder painted a grim picture of India’s environment for innovators sparking widespread discussion.

The now-deleted post on the r/India subreddit, titled “Leave India! It’s high time! And I am telling this as someone who runs a well-funded business!” urged high-salaried individuals and innovators to consider emigrating.

The author with username u/anonymous_batm_an detailed his frustrations with India’s business climate including “stupid regulations,” corruption and high taxes. The entrepreneur, who studied at a top Indian engineering institute and earned a postgraduate degree in the US, returned to India in 2018 to launch a company. Despite securing substantial funding and employing nearly 30 people with an average salary of ₹15 lakh, he shared stories of bureaucratic hurdles and social challenges.

He recounted being accused and asked for bribes despite helping police solve a fraud case. The founder also criticised poor public services, frequent “regional hate” and a culture where “social status is tied to wealth and appearance.”

The post included a stark warning of an impending “terrible economic collapse” and further depreciation of the rupee. He sarcastically pointed to the popcorn tax as a symbol of desperation:

The post said, “In a nutshell…leave the country where they will even tax your popcorn because they are out of ideas to make it a 5 trillion dollar economy!” The entrepreneur suggested the UAE or Thailand as better destinations for innovators.

The post garnered over 300 comments before its removal. Some users sympathised, citing issues like poor roads, healthcare and corruption. A commenter living in Australia echoed the sentiment, saying, “Taxes are high, but the returns are poor.” Another user joked that they would join the entrepreneur in leaving India if he decided to shut down his business.

Apple is working on a smart home doorbell with advanced facial recognition and aims to compete with brands like Ring. Plans revealed in the latest Mark Gurman newsletter on Bloomberg, this new device would integrate wirelessly with smart home locks and offer innovative features for seamless access control.

Report reveals that one of the standout feature of this doorbell would be its ability to unlock your home automatically by scanning your face. Gurman explains, “The idea is that the doorbell could automatically unlock the door for a home’s residents by scanning their face — just like Face ID lets them into their iPhone.”

Apple already supports several third-party HomeKit-compatible locks available through its online store, but a doorbell with built-in facial recognition marks a new direction. Gurman suggests that the doorbell could potentially integrate with various third-party HomeKit locks, although it’s not confirmed.

Apple might even partner with a specific lock manufacturer to offer an all-in-one package.

However, the project is still in its early stages. Gurman notes that the doorbell won’t hit the market “before the end of next year at the soonest.”

The device is expected to use Apple’s new in-house networking chip, which enhances connectivity across smart home devices.

This doorbell is part of Apple’s broader plans to expand its presence in the smart home market. The company is rumoured to soon launch a new smart home control device that attaches to walls and may feature a speaker base akin to the Google Nest Hub.

Moreover, refreshed versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini are expected as part of the same efforts.

One interesting thing highlighted in the newsletter is that Apple may choose to release the doorbell under its own brand or through a close partner such as Belkin. Gurman explains the company Apple might go with own brand because considering all the possible risks of potential break-ins and robberies association.
