Budget 2021: Industry urges government to withdraw duty hike on mobile parts

0

Just a day after the announcement of Union Budget 2021, the electronics industry has opposed the proposed increase in the customs duties on some mobile parts.

To promote local manufacturing, the government in the Union Budget 2021 has removed exemptions on parts of chargers and mobiles. The Budget has proposed to withdraw a few exemptions and impose a 2.5 per cent duty on several parts of mobiles.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “Domestic electronic manufacturing has grown rapidly. We are now exporting items like mobiles and chargers. For greater domestic value addition, we are withdrawing a few exemptions on parts of chargers and sub-parts of mobiles. Further, some parts of mobiles will move from ‘nil’ rate to a moderate 2.5%.”

This year the government had the onerous task of igniting growth in the economy and get India back to 8-9% growth levels.

Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) said, the move is against recommendations made by the industry and experts.

He said, “The mobile and electronics sector should have been spared the general removal of exemptions where there was zero percent import duty.”

He further added, “Zero customs duty does not mean zero taxation. These inputs suffer 18% GST also. This increase is also against the consultation held with the industry and the recommendations of the subject ministry and experts. The Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) was not working and exports were weak. That propelled the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the sake of competitiveness to address disabilities. This spate of duties takes us right back, queering the pitch for electronics exports. We request the government to maintain the status quo.”

Analysts said the government’s move is likely meant to urge industry players to ramp up manufacturing in India. The government had introduced its PLI scheme last year, approving five Indian and five global manufacturers for the same. The scheme provides 4-6% cash incentives for making mobile phones in India.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman, on Monday, said customs duties on “some mobile phone parts” will increase from nil to 2.5%. Duties on the printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), camera modules, and connectors have been increased from zero to 2.5%.

PCBA and molded plastic for manufacturing chargers and adapters will incur duties of 15%, up from 10% earlier. Input parts for mobile chargers (other than PCBA) will also incur duties of 10% now (from zero earlier), while parts for Li-Ion cells will incur duties of 2.5%.

OnePlus Band Review: Starts with a Bang

0

OnePlus success in the smartphone market has led to the diversification of its products, meaning from just being a smartphone-centric company now it has moved into producing other gadgets as well. In recent times we have seen that the company has ventured into producing smart TV, Bluetooth headphones were already there, and now it has entered into producing wearables. The wearable which we are talking about is the OnePlus Band which we will be reviewing. This is the first product from OnePlus in the wearable segment.

Design

The new OnePlus Band looks just like other fitness bands. It comes with an adjustable strap configuration in a single model. The dimensions of the fitness tracker and the strap are quite similar to other fitness trackers on the market, measuring 40.4×17.6×11.95 mm with a width of up to 21mm which feels very light on the wrist and the straps don’t irritate the skin when you sweat while exercising. With a basic clasp style, the strap features distinctive striated patterns along its length. It’s a shiny, pliant quality that causes the skin to feel good. The default color is black, but extra colored straps can be ordered by the customer. The two other color straps available are Navy and Tangerine Gray. By just pressing lightly, the key tracker can be popped in and out of the strap and the reason for this is that any time you decide to charge the band, you have to pull the tracker out. The tracker and the band are completely water-resistant with an IP68 rating that helps you to use the band even underwater when swimming.

Display

The OnePlus Band has a 1.1-inch, 126×294 pixel AMOLED touchscreen display. Thanks to its self-emitting pixels, the display has bright, well-saturated colors, and completely deep blacks in terms of picture consistency. Also, in direct sunshine, the screen remains easily readable. The brightness level of the band can also be adjusted which you can opt for according to your brightness preference and the amount of battery power which you want to invest in the display. The OnePlus brand has no button, and the entire surface of the front is plain. There is no always-on display on the OnePlus Band. OnePlus does, however, provide one of the best wake detection displays. The display on the OnePlus Band lights up with the slightest turn of your wrist, unlike most other fitness trackers in this price category that require deliberate and dramatic arm gestures to light up their screens.

Functions

The new OnePlus Band comes with four main features which are fitness tracking, heart monitor, SpO2 monitor, and the sleep tracker. The band can track various activities like running, fat burn running, open-air walks, cycling, elliptical exercise, rowing, swimming, and many others. The heart monitoring constantly provides you the information about your heartbeat. The band has a built-in pulse oximeter that measures your peripheral oxygen saturation or SpO2 levels. The pulse oximeter is one such important feature that helps you keep a record of the oxygen level especially when you are hypoxic. OnePlus Band is also able to follow your sleep patterns, including your total length of sleep, deep sleep and light sleep, and your SpO2 levels during your sleep. The band can monitor various activities but it misses out on two sensors which are the menstrual cycle sensor and stress sensor. The lack of these two sensors make the band a little less appealing to the customers and place it behind its rival band which is Mi Band 5. All the data recorded can be seen on the OnePlus Health App. The health app allows you to make changes in the settings of the band like changing the watch faces. The new OnePlus band comes with 37 watch faces.

The band has other smart features as well which include controlling the music, taking pictures of your paired phone with the band. The band also allows you to set alarms. The notifications of your phone also pops-up on the display of the band as well.

Battery

The OnePlus Band comes with a 100mAh battery and claims to provide up to 14 days of battery life on a single charge but when we used the watch rigorously in its higher settings we were able to use the watch only for 7-8 days. However, if you use the watch in its moderate settings you will be able to use the watch for 12 days with a single charge.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Band effortlessly kicks start a new domain for the brand which is cluttered with various offerings from America’s Fitbit to the Chinese Xiaomi and Korea’s Samsung, and like the OnePlus smartphones, this band makes an impact on the first attempt. The band is suitable for the skin, offers a wide range of tracks, from the very demanding oxygen level to your steps, and heartbeat. The 37 watch faces make it fun to wear each day. The battery backup is great and can easily last during long tours without the worry of charge. The display is quite ambient and responsive as well. The ability to control smartphone notifications adds to its benefits. The OnePlus Band sells at Rs 2,499 which makes it an ideal fitness tracker-cum-watch in the market with the trust of OnePlus.

Centre asks Twitter to block 250 accounts for ‘hateful’ tweets on farm protest

0

The ministry of electronics and IT, on Monday, directed the microblogging platform, Twitter, to block around 250 tweets and Twitter accounts that were using offensive, inciting hashtags that have been making fake, intimidatory, and provocative tweets.

Now, according to the reports, this was done at the request of the Union home ministry which has also reimposed internet restrictions on border areas to prevent any escalation of the law and order situation.

The Ministry has stated that it ordered to block these Twitter accounts and Tweets under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

The order from the Centre came on January 30 amid a tense situation on the border where farmers have been protesting since November.

On Monday, the Union home ministry extended the suspension of internet services at the farmer protest sites in Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri borders till Tuesday night, officials said. The adjoining areas will also be affected. The suspension is effective from 11 pm on January 31 to 11 pm on February 2.

As per the report, a Home Ministry official has stated that the decision has been taken to ‘maintain public safety and averting public emergency’ under Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules 2017.

The suspension of internet services at the three border points and their adjoining areas was imposed at 11 pm on January 29 and was initially effective till 11 pm on January 31. Internet services were also temporary suspended in some parts of Delhi on January 26, when large-scale violence was reported during the farmers’ tractor rally.

Crafting the Perfect e-Learning Experience with the aid of data storage technologies

0

We are in the middle of a defining moment in the history of education. With schools indefinitely closed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the education sector has undergone a hard reset. While the familiar physical classrooms wear a deserted look, the online space has come alive with scores of students connecting with their teachers to ensure learning doesn’t stop. In developing this virtual culture of learning, technologies such as video conferencing and online learning management systems have played a pivotal role in supporting students to learn, grow and thrive.

In India, market estimates suggest that the online learning market is expected to reach INR 360 billion by 2024, with an expansion at a CAGR of ~44% between 2019 and 2024. According to a BARC-Nielsen report, there has been a 16% increase in the time spent on smartphones during the lockdown, with around 18.7 billion minutes being spent per day over a week in the month of May! Further, the report’s findings indicate that there has especially been a surge in the usage of education apps, besides gaming and social networking.

What we are witnessing today is a staggering volume of data generation and exchange across virtual education platforms. Hence, a well-founded data infrastructure becomes imperative for designing a great learning experience. Whether it is storing and backing up personal data or drawing data-driven insights for monitoring performance and measuring engagement, storage solutions are the very bedrock of this worldwide experiment in remote learning.

A paradigm shift in the education landscape

Today, instant access to information, real-time communication, and online collaboration are a ‘must-have’ for learning continuity plans. A whole host of Next-Generation technologies are connecting the educators and learners in the virtual world. These include video, language apps, virtual tutoring and online learning software, as well as digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom.

However, digitalization is a double-edged sword. The effectiveness of online education is contingent to several factors, including where the content is hosted,  how it is managed and access to a robust connectivity. Think about it this way: online learning platforms replicate physical classrooms by way of providing an interactive learning environment along with several tools and functionalities.

Irrespective of the platform, online learning produces vast volumes of data from different sources, ranging from video lectures, presentations and performance trackers to course and project work as well as assignments. In crafting a seamless online learning experience, it is vital to manage data in an effective and a secure fashion. Implementing appropriate data storage solutions also helps in overcoming challenges in accessing historical data in the form of study references, administrative and financing department records, etc., and creates a well-structured and streamlined e-learning infrastructure.

External storage devices: enabling seamless learning

With digital learning set to become an extension to offline learning modes in the future, it is likely educational institutions will partner with technology companies to create the perfect ‘virtual schoolbag’ consisting of laptops, network equipment and, more importantly, data storage devices. Besides offering a high volume of storage space, these devices safeguard against data loss – especially in an e-learning environment, where a system crash or a glitch in the central database can result in an instant loss of valuable data collated over a long period of time. Towards this end, external storage devices, such as portable HDDs and SSDs  offer a crucial safety net as a medium of secure offline data storage.

With hours upon hours of recorded video lectures, media-rich presentations and large volumes of files, photos and videos, students are increasingly adopting portable HDDs, which offer high-capacity storage space to backup crucial data from online lessons in a secure manner. Similarly, Portable SSDs can help teachers and students to transfer a large amount of content in a jiffy to either back up or share with another person.

Similarly, pre-loaded micro SD cards and dual USB drives are versatile storages devices that can be used along with smartphones by those who may not have access to laptops for attending virtual classes. The dual USB drives allow content to be seamlessly transferred between devices, such as from a smartphone to a smartphone or a PC. In addition, these drives work well for those residing in hard-to-reach areas with fractured broadband infrastructure.

While students can choose any device, memory cards are of utility to a large percentage of students who use their smartphones to attend virtual classes. These cards differ in speed, storage capacity and compatibility and can be used for storing everything, from text notes to video files. They also allow high-speed data transfer, thereby enabling a better experience.

The online learning experience will evolve

The paradigm shift in the education ecosystem onto the digital framework has a large number of advantages. This is fast proving that virtual education may not be a short-term stopgap solution for continued learning, but perhaps a new way of schooling that will complement and co-existing with the physical classrooms. With resilient and effective storage solutions, e-learning can become a powerful tool to bring about democratization of quality education. Tools and services with a mobile-first approach and a richer content in more regional languages will be the key enablers of growth in this sector.

Comments from Industry on Union Budget 2021

0

Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, on Monday, unveiled the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2021-22 that aims to shore up an economy badly-hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

In a bid to promote domestic smartphone manufacturing, FM Nirmala Sitharaman announced the removal of a few custom duty exemptions on importing parts of mobile chargers and sub-parts of mobile phones. In addition, custom duty on some parts of the handsets is to move from nil rate to a “moderate 2.5 percent”. Some of these changes coming into effect from February 2, and the rest from April 1.

Here we have some comments from industry people on what they think about the Budget 2021:

Nitin Kunkolienker, President MAIT said, “MAIT welcomes the continued focus of the Government on PLI and it is very encouraging. PLI will help achieve scale, and job creation for the youth of India. We look forward to the upcoming PLI including the electronics industry sub-sectors PCs, Datacom, Servers, Wearables, Telecom products, Smart meters and components. We are happy to see the continued emphasis on the adoption of technology into economic activities. The National Language Translation Mission, earlier proposed by MEITY, will enable Bharat on the digital highway allowing the masses to take ride on the digitization of the economy.”

Kunal Lakhara, VP of Finance and Operations, Pocket Aces said, “The Union Budget 2021-2022’s revised fiscal deficit estimate for FY21 which is pegged at 9.5% of GDP seems promising, and has taken on a realistic approach that is focused on spends which are much needed to revive the economy. The tax holiday given to startups for an additional one year brings relief to enabling the sector to sustain and grow, as we recover from the pandemic. Furthermore, the move to encourage one-person companies without any restrictions is a step in the right direction. This will go a long way in encouraging more people to come forward to set up innovative businesses that solve the challenge of the day, and grow the high-potential startup ecosystem within the country.”

Ajay Data, Founder & CEO, VideoMeet said, “The announcement by the Honorable Finance Minister regarding the startups was much required at the moment and will help the fledgling startups with meager resources to continue with their business operations without worrying about the compliance with complex taxes. The announcement comes soon after Prime Minister announced setting up of Rs 10,000 crore fund for seed funding of startups. These moves by the government make the intent of government clear that it wants to promote entrepreneurship and help the enthusiastic young entrepreneurs in the country. The setting up of separate administration structure to promote ease of doing business is a laudable move by the FM. Also, as predicted startups were given importance under this budget, and the industry is poised to be greatly benefited with the Tax holiday extended by another year till 31 March 2022.”

Dhruv Agarwala, Group CEO, Housing.com said, “Amid a sharp improvement in consumer sentiment with regard to property purchases post the start of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the government’s move in the Budget to extend the benefit of additional Rs 1.5 lakh tax deduction on home loan interest, until March 31, 2022, will act as a further impetus to the residential property sector. This move will augur well, especially for the affordable housing segment, which will also benefit from the decision to offer a tax holiday for affordable housing projects for one more year, to boost supply. The support announced today by the Honourable Finance Minister for rental housing too will go a long way in boosting the real estate market and will ease a lot of pressure points in the rental home market. This will also help migrant workers to a great extent and will support them in remaining in metros and other big cities during times of financial hardships such as the one presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the long-standing demand of the real estate industry to expand the definition of affordable housing so as to include homes priced more than Rs 45 lakhs in big metro cities, has sadly not been addressed.”

Paavan Nanda, Co-Founder, WinZO Games said, “The measures announced by the government demonstrate its bullishness towards the startup ecosystem. The extension of long-term capital gains by another year will offer tailwinds to early stage funding. Extension of tax holiday by one year is also an encouraging offering, however, most of the new age startups don’t start booking profits in the early years. The Budget’s focus on economic development, infrastructure and health will definitely put India back on the growth trajectory after an unprecedented past financial year.”

Rakesh Deshmukh, Co Founder and CEO, Indus OS said, “The announcement of the National Language Translation Mission is a much needed effort by the government to reach our citizens in the language they understand. At Indus App Bazaar, the usage of apps in Indian languages on our platform has increased 2.2 times last year. We believe that with an enhanced app store ecosystem we will be able to break linguistic barriers and adding more value to the next half a billion Indian customers. Moreover, for Atma Nirbhar Bharat to be successful, the focus should be on technology innovation as a whole. We appreciate the government’s focus on innovation and R&D in the budget 2021.”

Mike Chen, General Manager, TCL India said, “We do welcome the recent PLI scheme of the government. However, we need to ease up the duty imposed on raw materials keeping in mind the make in India thought. We should also be getting added incentives so that transformative measures can be taken. The industry contributes 25% of the country’s GDP.”

Akhilesh Chopra, Sales Director at Bluei said, “Mobile, charges and power banks can be expensive in the coming times. This is because Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has proposed to increase customs duty (import duty) on mobile phones and power bank sub-parts for FY 2021. The aim is to promote local manufacturing in the country, the rebate on all parts of mobile phones and parts of chargers is being withdrawn. Now 2.5% import duty will be levied some parts of mobile phones and chargers will now be subject to 2.5% customs duty. Till now, there was no duty on these parts. Increasing custom duty will certainly make it expensive for the companies to procure these mobile parts. To make up for this, mobile companies may increase the prices of mobile and power bank in the coming time. The motive behind increasing customs duty is that the government should manufacture these parts in the country. And the pandemic has provided the center an opportunity to attract global manufacturers and make the country a manufacturing hub emerging as an alternative to China.”

Phones may get expensive by 3-4% after Feb 2: Budget 2021

0

In order to boost domestic manufacturing, the government, on Monday, announced an increase in custom duty for up to 10 per cent on mobile chargers and some sub-parts of phones, a move that can make handsets costlier by 3-4 per cent from February 2.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her Union Budget 2021-22 speech, said that withdrawing exemptions on parts of chargers and mobile phones will boost local manufacturing of smartphones.

“Domestic electronic manufacturing has grown rapidly. We are now exporting items like mobiles and chargers,” Sitharaman said.

She further informed, “For greater domestic value addition, we are withdrawing a few exemptions on parts of chargers and sub-parts of mobiles. Further, some parts of mobiles will move from ‘nil’ rate to a moderate 2.5 per cent.”

However, inputs or raw material for manufacture of specified parts like back cover, side keys etc. of cellular mobile phone has been increased from ‘nil’ to 10 per cent.

Inputs or parts of Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) of charger or adapter of cellular mobile phones are up from ‘nil’ to 10 per cent while the custom duty on inputs or parts of moulded plastic of charger or adapter of cellular mobile phones has also been increased from ‘nil’ to 10 per cent.

The 2.5 per cent duty hike is applicable on inputs or parts for manufacture of PCBA of cellular mobile phones, inputs or parts for manufacture of camera module, manufacture of connectors and raw material, etc.

The new custom duty slabs for chargers and parts of mobile phones are applicable from February 2.

The Centre has already rolled out a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the electronics manufacturing sector, particularly for mobile phone manufacturing, to curb increasing imports.

Apple starts testing iPhone with in-display fingerprint sensor: Report

0

Since Apple announced its facial recognition system called Face ID, the company started replacing the Touch ID, or fingerprint recognition from the iPhone models. But now it seems that the technology could make a comeback.

According to some media reports, Apple is testing a new Touch ID technology. Given that most of the premium smartphones launching these days come with an in-display fingerprint sensor, it seems that Apple could also jump the bandwagon.

The company is reportedly testing the in-display Touch ID. Previously, it was reported that Apple could bring in-display fingerprint sensors to the upcoming iPhones and the latest report indicates that the company is making progress towards that.

However, Apple isn’t expected to replace the Face ID. Reports coming from WSJ based on the information of two employees of Apple, who remain anonymous, both Touch ID and Face ID will be present in the upcoming iPhone model.

While optical fingerprint sensor could be more reliable compared to the existing ultrasonic sensor used by the company, Apple isn’t expected to use the latest optical sensor unless they are as secure as the current version.

Apple is using Touch ID only on one smartphone these days – iPhone SE. However, the fingerprint sensor is also available on MacBook devices. Interestingly, on iPad Air 4, the company shifted the sensor from the screen to the sleep/wake button on the side.
