X Tests New “About This Account” Feature to Curb Fake Profiles and Inauthentic Activity

0

Highlights

  • X tests ‘About This Account’ that will show account creation date, location, username history, and platform linkage to help users spot fake or suspicious profiles.
  • It is currently limited to select X team profiles, the feature is being tested with feedback in mind.
  • X is also re-evaluating its algorithm’s link penalty, which currently reduces the reach of posts containing external URLs.

X (formerly Twitter) is experimenting with a new transparency feature aimed at combating fake accounts, bots and inauthentic engagement on its platform. The company has long struggled with spam and deceptive behaviour. However, these issues have only worsened since the introduction of paid verification, which boosts the visibility of paying users.

New ‘About This Account’ Feature on X

image

X has begun testing a new “About This Account” feature. This addition will display key details about a profile including when the account was created, the user’s location, how many times the username has been changed, and how the account is linked to X.

The idea is to make it easier for users to assess the authenticity of profiles and identify suspicious activity.

The feature functions similarly to Facebook’s “Page Transparency” section, which offers insights into when a page was established and where its administrators are based.

Announcing this in a post, X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier wrote, “When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world. As part of that, we’re experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based, among other details.”

If rolled out widely, this tool could help users detect common scams on X. For instance, scammers often hijack and rename compromised accounts to trick existing followers. Knowing when a username was last changed or where an account is located could make it easier for users to spot such deceptive behaviour.

Rollout

However, the feature is still in its early testing phase. Bier confirmed that the information will initially appear only on “a handful of profiles of X team members”, most of whom already carry an official “X” badge, so that the company can collect feedback before a broader rollout.

Meanwhile, some users have already expressed concerns about privacy, particularly regarding the display of location information. Bier, while replying to a comment, has stated that it is exploring options to address those worries while maintaining transparency for account verification.

In addition to this test, X is reviewing how it handles posts containing links. According to the platform’s open-source algorithm code, posts with links currently face a significant reach penalty, as X aims to keep users within the app rather than redirecting them elsewhere. However, this strategy has not yielded the desired results, prompting the company to reconsider and potentially revise this policy.

FAQs

Q1. What is the “About This Account” feature on X?

Answer. It’s a transparency tool being tested by X (formerly Twitter) that displays key profile details such as account creation date, location, username history, and platform linkage. It will o help users assess authenticity and spot suspicious behaviour.

Q2. Why is X introducing “About This Account” feature now?

Answer. X aims to combat fake profiles, bots, and deceptive engagement, especially after paid verification increased visibility for potentially inauthentic accounts. This feature helps users verify content sources more easily.

Q3. Will the “About This Account” feature on X be available to all users?

Answer. Not yet. It’s currently in early testing and visible only on select X team member profiles. The company is collecting feedback before a broader rollout and is also exploring privacy safeguards around location visibility.

0

Highlights

  • Instagram enforces PG-13 rules where all users under 18 are now defaulted to a 13+ content setting, which cannot be disabled without parental approval.
  • Teens are blocked from viewing or interacting with mature content, risky accounts, and sensitive search terms.
  • Parents gain new controls including “Limited Content” mode and post-flagging tools.

Instagram has announced a major update to its teen safety policies. According to the announcement, all Teen Accounts will now be guided by PG-13 standards by default, starting immediately. This means all users under the age of 18 will be automatically placed into a 13+ content setting, which they cannot disable without parental approval, the company confirmed.

Instagram Tightens Teen Safety Controls

Instagram first introduced Teen Accounts in 2024, designed to shield young users from harmful or inappropriate content. The platform described this latest update as its “most significant” yet, saying it “builds on the automatic protections already provided” to younger users.

In an official statement, Instagram said, “We know that all families are different, we’re also introducing a new, stricter setting for parents who prefer a more restrictive experience for their teen. We invited thousands of parents worldwide to share their feedback with us, helping us shape these changes and ensure our efforts align with their expectations. […….] We hope this update reassures parents that we’re working to show teens safe, age-appropriate content on Instagram by default, while also giving them more ways to shape their teen’s experience.”

What Are Instagram Teen Accounts?

Teen Accounts are specifically designed to protect minors by limiting their exposure to mature content.

These protections include hiding or not recommending sexually suggestive material, graphic or disturbing imagery, and adult-oriented content such as posts about tobacco or alcohol sales.

What the New PG-13 Rules Mean?

According to Meta, the update means teens will only see content that’s comparable to what would appear in a PG-13-rated movie.

The updated guidelines go further than before, introducing additional restrictions to hide or avoid recommending posts containing strong language, risky stunts, or content promoting harmful behaviours such as depictions of marijuana use or paraphernalia.

Teens will also no longer be able to follow accounts that frequently share age-inappropriate content, or whose usernames or bios suggest they are unsuitable for minors. If a teen already follows such accounts, they will lose the ability to view or interact with their posts, send them DMs, or see their comments on other users’ content.

image

Instagram added, “We won’t recommend these accounts to teens, and we’ll make it harder for teens to find these accounts in Search. These protections work both ways: these accounts won’t be able to follow teens, send them DMs, or comment on their posts.”

Strengthened Search and Content Restrictions

Meta stated that Instagram already blocks searches for sensitive topics such as suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders. With this update, teens will also be restricted from seeing search results for additional mature terms like ‘alcohol’ or ‘gore’. The platform is also working to ensure that these terms remain blocked even when misspelt.

Teens will be prevented from viewing Reels, Feed posts, or Explore suggestions that violate the new content standards, even if the material is shared by someone they already follow. Furthermore, if a restricted link is sent through DMs, the recipient will not be able to open it.

Limited Content Mode and AI Updates

image

Meta is introducing a new, stricter mode called “Limited Content,” which filters out even more content from the Teen Account experience. This mode will also remove teens’ ability to see, post, or receive comments under any posts. Starting next year, it will further restrict the AI conversations teens can have on the platform.

This enhanced control option is designed to give parents more authority over what their teens see on Instagram. Meta also revealed it is testing a new tool that lets parents flag posts they believe should be hidden from teen users, providing a direct feedback channel to the company.

Automatic Age Restrictions and Rollout Plan

The new PG-13 settings will be automatically applied to all teen accounts and cannot be removed without parental consent. However, Instagram emphasised that complete censorship is impossible, saying, “Just like you might see some suggestive content or hear some strong language in a PG-13 movie, teens may occasionally see something like that on Instagram. But we’re going to keep doing all we can to keep those instances as rare as possible.”

Meta added that it plans to roll out these changes gradually across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States by the end of 2025. Global rollout will follow along with additional protections for teens who claim to be adults and extended safety features on Facebook.

Mixed Reactions and Criticism

While some experts welcomed the update, others remain sceptical about Meta’s implementation.

Josh Golin, executive director of nonprofit Fairplay, told AP he is “very sceptical about how this will be implemented,” arguing that Meta’s move may be an attempt to delay the federal Kids Online Safety Act, which seeks greater accountability rather than “splashy press releases.”

Similarly, Ailen Arreaza, executive director of ParentsTogether, criticised Meta’s history of making promises without sufficient follow-through. “We have heard promises from Meta before, and each time we have watched millions be poured into PR campaigns, while the actual safety features fall short in testing and implementation. Our children have paid the price for that gap between promise and protection,” she told AP. She added that while the PG-13 approach is a “step in the right direction,” it must be backed by independent testing and real accountability.

Meta’s use of the “PG-13” label has also drawn criticism from the Motion Picture Association (MPA), which clarified that it was not consulted before the announcement. “We welcome efforts to protect kids from content that may not be appropriate for them, but assertions that Instagram’s new tool will be guided by PG-13 movie ratings or have any connection to the film industry’s rating system are inaccurate,” said Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the MPA.

However, some experts view the move positively. Desmond Upton Patton, a University of Pennsylvania professor who studies social media, AI, and online behaviour, said the change provides “a timely opening for parents and caregivers to talk directly with teens about their digital lives.” He added, “I am especially glad to see changes around AI chatbots that make clear they are not human, they do not love you back, and should be engaged with that understanding. It is a meaningful step toward a more joyful social media experience for teens.”

FAQs

Q1. What does Instagram’s new PG-13 setting mean for teen users?

Answer. All users under 18 are now automatically placed into a PG-13 content setting, restricting exposure to mature themes like strong language, risky stunts, and adult-oriented posts. This setting cannot be disabled without parental approval.

Q2. What new Instagram parental controls are being introduced?

Answer. Instagram is launching a “Limited Content” mode that filters out even more content and limits interaction features like comments. Parents can also flag posts they believe should be hidden from their teen’s feed, giving them more direct influence over content moderation.

Q3. Will these new Instagram PG-13 changes apply globally?

Answer. Yes, but gradually. The PG-13 settings will roll out across Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US by the end of 2025, with a global rollout and extended protections including for teens who claim to be adults, planned afterwards.

YouTube has announced a wide range of new updates aimed at improving user experience, creator engagement, and content management. The latest changes include a refreshed UI design, expanded access to voice replies and courses, a new system for fixable violations, updated artist cards, and more.

Refreshed UI and Playback Enhancements

image

YouTube is introducing a visual overhaul to enhance navigation and viewing, especially for Shorts and Connected TV users. The updated playback interface now features translucent on-screen buttons for a “more immersive and unified viewing experience.”

The platform has also redesigned video descriptions to match colours found in the video content, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

Additionally, YouTube has improved the double-tap to seek function. The company explains, “This update includes visual improvements to the intuitive gesture that lets you move forward or backward in videos by double-tapping the screen. When you double-tap, text will display momentarily on the screen, indicating the exact number of seconds the video is moving, for example, 10 seconds forward. And the duration of the skip will align with your individual settings, which can be configured in increments such as 5, 10, and 15 seconds.”

Threaded Comments and Custom Likes

image

YouTube is also rolling out threaded comments, allowing up to three levels of replies within the comments section. Viewers can now tap on a comment to view the full conversation in an expanded thread. Once the third level is reached, additional replies will appear as flattened responses. After testing this feature in July, YouTube is now launching it globally.

Another new addition is custom likes, which will display different like icons depending on the content category a user is viewing.

Updated Artist Cards and Music Integration

image

Artists are also getting a visibility boost. YouTube has introduced updated artist cards in search results for top-searched musicians. These redesigned cards will make it easier for users to discover and engage with music-related content.

To qualify, artists must have at least one official music release and a minimum of 100,000 subscribers.

Expanded Voice Replies

image

YouTube is expanding its voice replies feature, which lets creators respond to comments using short 30-second audio clips. First launched in December and expanded in February, the feature will now be available to hundreds of thousands of creators.

Eligible creators can now record voice replies directly through both the YouTube main app and YouTube Studio Mobile.

Voice replies give creators a more personal way to engage with their audience and add variety to community interactions.

Courses Expansion for Creators

image

YouTube is also widening access to its Courses feature, a learning and monetisation tool originally introduced in beta in 2022. The feature allows creators to host free or paid learning programs directly on their channels.

The company stated, “Up till now, courses have only been available to a small subset of creators on YouTube. Now, we’re excited to share that we’re expanding ad-supported courses to creators with access to Advanced features this week.”

Creators who meet YouTube’s Advanced features criteria, which require either sufficient channel history or verified ID, will now be able to create and monetise courses. Completed courses will display a course badge on the Watch page, and viewers who finish all the videos in a course will receive a completion badge in their library.

Within YouTube Studio, course owners can access detailed analytics including views, watch time, audience insights, and revenue metrics. YouTube also plans to expand access to this feature even further in the coming months.

Fixable Violations and Content Warnings

Lastly, YouTube is extending its fixable violations system. Introduced last year, this feature allows creators to remove or edit portions of content that violate Community Guidelines, helping them avoid video removals or account strikes.

The platform is now extending this option to content that has received official warnings, giving creators a chance to make corrections before facing more severe penalties. The feature will be available only to creators with Advanced feature access, and each video will be limited to one fix attempt. However, it won’t apply to more serious policy violations.

Eligible creators can access the fixable violations tool within YouTube Studio to make necessary changes and resubmit their videos for review.

FAQs

Q1. What are the major UI and playback changes on YouTube?

Answer. YouTube has refreshed its interface with translucent playback buttons and colour-matched video descriptions. It also improved the double-tap seek gesture, now showing skip duration text and allowing users to customise skip intervals.

Q2. How is YouTube enhancing creator engagement?

Answer. YouTube is expanding threaded comments (up to 3 levels), rolling out custom like icons based on content category, and making voice replies, 30-second audio clips, available to hundreds of thousands of creators via the main app and Studio Mobile.

Q3. What is YouTube’s Courses feature and who can use it?

Answer. Courses let creators host free or paid learning programs directly on their channels. Now available to those with Advanced features access, completed courses show badges for both creators and viewers, with detailed analytics in YouTube Studio.

A shocking incident involving the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold has gone viral after the device’s battery exploded during a YouTube durability test. The video is sparking serious debate about the safety and durability of Google’s latest foldable smartphone. Here’s the full story.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Explodes

The test was conducted by Zack Nelson, the host of the popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, known for pushing devices to their physical limits. During his latest video, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold not only snapped apart but also started smoking and caught fire during the bend test. Notably, this is a first in Nelson’s decade-long history of smartphone testing.

At the beginning of the test, everything seemed normal. The cover display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and began showing scratches at level 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale with “deeper grooves” appearing at level 7, similar to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The inner screen, however, was found to be so soft that it could be scratched with a fingernail, making a screen protector a must-have. Fortunately, the inner screen remains safe when the device is folded shut. Nelson also tested the phone’s frame, which lost some of its colour coating when scraped.

image

Next came the dust-resistance test. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first foldable smartphone to achieve IP68 dust and water resistance. Nelson confirmed that its inner screen is indeed dust-proof. However, the hinge mechanism didn’t fare as well. Sand and debris caused a noticeable crunching sound, indicating that fine particles could still get trapped inside.

Things escalated during the bend test. Google claims the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s redesigned hinge allows it to withstand a decade’s worth of folds. However, much like its predecessor, the phone snapped when bent backwards. Interestingly, the break didn’t occur at the hinge but along the antenna lines on the left side. Nelson criticised Google for keeping the antenna placement the same as last year, calling it a design oversight.

The real shock came moments later when Nelson tried bending the device further, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s battery began smoking and eventually exploded on camera. Nelson remarked, “The battery decides it’s had enough. Surprisingly, in the decade that I’ve been durability testing phones, I have never had a smartphone explode before.”

Even after half of the device was charred, Nelson continued examining the other panel, including the camera system, for additional insights. It’s worth noting that if a smartphone ever becomes bent or damaged, users should immediately stop using it and have it inspected by professionals to avoid any potential hazards.

FAQs

Q1. What happened during the Pixel 10 Pro Fold durability test?

Answer. During YouTuber Zack Nelson’s bend test on JerryRigEverything, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold snapped along its antenna lines, began smoking, and eventually exploded—marking the first smartphone explosion in Nelson’s testing history.

Q2. How did the Pixel 10 Pro Fold perform in scratch and dust tests?

Answer. The cover screen showed typical scratch resistance, while the inner screen was so soft it could be scratched with a fingernail. Though the phone is IP68 certified, its hinge allowed sand and debris to enter, causing a crunching sound.

Q3. What design flaw of Pixel 10 Pro Fold contributed to the device’s durability test failure?

Answer. The break occurred along the antenna lines, not the hinge. Nelson criticized Google for retaining the same antenna placement as the previous model, calling it a design oversight that likely contributed to the structural failure.

Spotify video podcasts are officially making their way to Netflix. The two streaming giants have announced a new collaboration that will bring select video podcasts from Spotify Studios and The Ringer to Netflix’s platform.

The first batch of titles set to debut includes The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Zach Lowe Show, The McShay Show, The Rewatchables, and Conspiracy Theories, among others. The video podcasts will initially launch on Netflix in the U.S. in early 2026 with additional regions expected to gain access later as the partnership expands.

More podcast titles will also be added to the catalogue over time.

Lauren Smith, Netflix VP of Content Licensing and Programming Strategy, said, “At Netflix, we’re always looking for new ways to entertain our members, wherever and however they want to watch. As video podcasts continue to grow in popularity, our partnership with Spotify allows us to bring full video versions of these top shows to both Netflix and Spotify audiences. From pop culture and lifestyle to true crime and sports, this curated selection of video podcasts adds fresh voices and new perspectives to Netflix, making our entertainment lineup more exciting than ever.”

“This partnership marks a new chapter for podcasting,” said Roman Wasenmüller, VP, Head of Podcasts at Spotify. “Together with Netflix, we’re expanding discovery, helping creators reach new audiences, and giving fans around the world the chance to experience the stories they love and uncover favorites they never expected. This offers more choice to creators and unlocks a completely new distribution opportunity.”

This move comes as video podcasts continue to surge in popularity with YouTube currently leading as the top platform for podcast consumption. Back in April 2025, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos had hinted at this direction, saying the company was “constantly looking at all different types of content and content creators” to feature on the platform.

The new collaboration aligns with that strategy and positions Netflix to better compete with YouTube in the growing video podcast market.

As we have already reported, Apple is gearing up for a major product reveal this week. Expectations running high for new devices including the iPad Pro, Vision Pro, and MacBook Pro. Adding fuel to the excitement, Apple’s marketing VP Greg Joswiak has now posted a teaser on X (formerly Twitter) hinting at what can be expected.

Apple M5 MacBook Pro New Teaser

Joswiak shared a short animation video on the official handle @gregjoz with a caption saying “something powerful is coming.” The graphic clearly showcases the side profile of a MacBook Pro. But several other details from Joswiak’s teaser post have caught attention.

The MacBook in the image appears to have a blue tint, possibly indicating that Apple may introduce a new sky blue colour option. If true, this would be similar to the MacBook Air and iPhone Air for the MacBook Pro lineup this year. Furthermore, the laptop’s shape in the teaser forms the letter “V,” which also represents the Roman numeral for five. Many fans were quick to take it as a subtle hint toward the upcoming M5 chip.

Lastly, Joswiak’s caption “Mmmmm” interestingly uses five M’s, adding yet another hint toward the same processor.

Upcoming M5 MacBook Pro – What To Expect?

Beyond this playful teaser, Apple hasn’t shared any additional information and has only confirming that more details are “coming soon.”

Reports suggest that the new MacBook Pro powered by the M5 chip won’t feature any major design overhauls. Apple is expected to introduce just the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro initially, while the higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch versions featuring the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are said to be planned for release in 2026.

According to recent reports from Bloomberg and other sources, Apple’s next lineup of releases will include the M5 MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro.

Sony PlayStation 6 Expected to Launch in 2027, Leaks Suggest Xbox ‘Magnus’ Could Cost More Than PS6

0

Highlights

  • Reports claim Sony is targeting a late 2027 release, aligning with its 7-year console cycle and possibly debuting a PS6 Portable too.
  • PS6 price is expected to start around $549 with rising production costs making a $499 price unlikely.
  • Sony may aim for competitive pricing below Microsoft’s premium Xbox ‘Magnus’.

Sony’s next-generation console is the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and it could debut in 2027. This latest update comes in complete contradiction to recent speculation pointing toward a 2028 release. But we are more inclined towards this latest update because it comes from tipster Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), who previously revealed details about Sony’s console roadmap. Here’s the full story.

PS6 Launch Date Speculation

The confusion about PS6 began after a recent discussion between Mark Cerny and Jack Huyhn about “Project Amethyst.” During the discussion, Cerny hinted that advanced technologies like Neural Arrays and Universal Compression could appear in future consoles within a few years. Many took this as a sign that the PS6 would arrive around 2028.

However, MLID has now reaffirmed that Sony is still targeting a 2027 launch window.

According to the leaker, citing an internal Sony document, PS6 production will begin in early to mid-2027, aligning with the company’s traditional seven-year console cycle. If this timeline holds true, fans can expect both the PlayStation 6 and possibly a PS6 Portable to arrive by late 2027.

PS6 Price Speculation

While performance details for the PS6 and PS6 Portable have already surfaced through previous leaks, pricing remains uncertain. Earlier reports suggested a $500 price tag for the PS6 Digital Edition, but this now seems unlikely given the recent price hikes for existing consoles.

The PS5 Digital Edition currently starts at $499.99, while the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro are priced at $549.99 and $749.99, respectively. With rising manufacturing costs, Sony may find it difficult to launch the PS6 at $499.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s next-generation console, Project Magnus, is rumoured to debut at a higher price than Sony’s PS6. Reports claim the upcoming Xbox could deliver superior hardware performance, featuring a more powerful GPU, faster SSD storage, and expanded memory. Industry insiders describe it as a premium offering tailored for enthusiasts, possibly priced several hundred dollars above Sony’s console.

Analysts believe this pricing strategy could help Microsoft position Project Magnus as a top-tier device while Sony focuses on maintaining broader accessibility with a slightly lower-priced PlayStation 6.

MLID speculates that a $549 starting price for the PS6, even without a disc drive and would be well-received by gamers. This could be true since a significant performance leap is expected over the predecessor PS5. If Sony manages to keep the price close to the current PS5 range instead of matching the PS5 Pro, it could give the PS6 a strong market advantage.

That said, pricing and release timelines remain speculative. Fans should take these early predictions with caution until Sony officially unveils its next-generation PlayStation.

FAQs

Q1. When is the PlayStation 6 expected to launch?

Answer. According to tipster MLID, Sony is targeting a late 2027 release for the PS6, with production beginning in early to mid-2027. A PS6 Portable may also debut alongside it.

Q2. How much will the PS6 likely cost?

Answer. While exact pricing is unconfirmed, analysts speculate a starting price around $549, especially for the digital edition without a disc drive, due to rising production costs.

Q3. How does Xbox ‘Magnus’ compare to the PS6?

Answer. Leaks suggest Xbox ‘Magnus’ will feature superior hardware, better GPU, faster SSD, and more memory, positioning it as a premium console priced above the PS6.

Apple iPhone Fold’s Hinge May Be Cheaper Than Expected, Says Kuo

0

Highlights

  • Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports Apple’s hinge ASP will be $70–$80, down from earlier estimates of $100–$120.
  • Foxconn and SZS lead production joint venture secures 65% of hinge orders with Amphenol handling the rest; Luxshare-ICT may join post-2027.
  • Apple’s first foldable iPhone may debut alongside iPhone Air 2 and iPhone 18 Pro series in fall 2026.

Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone could be less expensive to produce than initially expected, thanks to significant reductions in hinge component costs. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently made the claims in one blog post. Here’s the full story.

iPhone Fold’s Hinge to Cost Less Than Expected

Kuo, in one of the recent blog posts, has revealed that the hinge designed for Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone will have an average selling price (ASP) of around $70 to $80 when mass production begins. This is considerably lower than the market’s earlier expectations of $100 to $120 or more.

The analyst attributed the cost drop not to cheaper materials, but to “assembly design optimisation” and Foxconn’s role in production scaling.

Foxconn has reportedly partnered with Taiwanese hinge manufacturer Shin Zu Shing (SZS) in a joint venture to handle most of Apple’s hinge production. The partnership has already secured about 65% of Apple’s hinge orders, while U.S.-based Amphenol is expected to supply the rest of the 35%. Kuo noted that Foxconn holds a slightly larger stake in this collaboration and is “steering future direction.”

This reduction in hinge pricing could be a major advantage for Apple, as foldable smartphones are typically expensive to produce due to their complex hinge mechanisms. A $20–$40 drop in hinge ASP compared to earlier estimates could help Apple improve its profit margins or adopt a more competitive pricing strategy against rivals like Samsung and Huawei.

Kuo further suggested that Luxshare-ICT, one of Apple’s rapidly expanding manufacturing partners, could join as an additional hinge supplier after 2027. Increased competition among suppliers could push hinge costs even lower in the future.

The hinge is a vital part of any foldable device, influencing both the durability and smoothness of the screen’s folding motion. Apple is reportedly testing several hinge materials including stainless steel, Liquid Metal, and lighter aluminium and titanium frames, similar to what’s used in the iPhone Air.

It remains unclear whether these savings will translate into a lower retail price or simply boost Apple’s profit margins. As of now, the first foldable iPhone is expected to debut in fall 2026, alongside the iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

FAQs

Q1. How much will the hinge for Apple’s foldable iPhone cost?

Answer. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the hinge will cost around $70–$80 per unit during mass production, significantly lower than earlier estimates of $100–$120.

Q2. Who is manufacturing the hinge for Apple’s foldable iPhone?

Answer. Foxconn and Taiwanese firm Shin Zu Shing (SZS) are handling about 65% of hinge production, while Amphenol will supply the remaining 35%.

Q3. When is Apple expected to launch its first foldable iPhone?

Answer. The foldable iPhone is expected to debut in fall 2026, alongside the iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
