After some software juice was provided to the Nothing Phone (1) and (2) models last month, the affordable mid-range Nothing Phone (2a) is next in line to receive some AI-powered enhancements.
Nothing is now rolling out its Nothing OS 2.5.5a software, headlined by tight integration with the ChatGPT conversational AI assistant.
The OS 2.5.5a update brings a number of improvements, but the ChatGPT implementation is undoubtedly the marquee addition.
After installing the new software, Nothing Phone (2a) owners gain access to a new voice gesture for summoning ChatGPT through the Nothing X app.
You’ll also find ChatGPT widgets for your home screen and options to paste content directly into new ChatGPT conversations from screenshots and clipboard popups.
Beyond the AI assistant integration, Nothing OS 2.5.5a delivers camera upgrades like improved colour accuracy, saturation, and portrait mode effects.
One of its aims is to enhance consistency between the main and ultra-wide lenses.
On the system front, the update adds new ringtones, a Recorder widget, and more nuanced haptic feedback levels.
Nothing says animations for app launching, transitioning to the Always On Display, and expanding Quick Settings have been optimized for better smoothness.
There are also enhancements to memory management for background apps to boost performance without impacting battery life.
Other tweaks include a revamped Battery widget design, smarter auto-brightness adjustments, improved call quality for Android Auto connections, and a new extreme power-saving mode.
As a whole, the Nothing OS 2.5.5a update packs a considerable number of functional improvements and quality-of-life additions for the company’s lower-cost handset.
The built-in ChatGPT access in particular gives the Phone (2a) an AI edge over rival budget smartphones.
