Meta’s Threads app has now hit a major milestone of 300 million users with over 100 million people using the platform every day. Mark Zuckerberg shared the news in a post on Threads, saying, “Threads strong momentum continues.”

Zuckerberg has previously said that Threads has a “good chance” of becoming Meta’s next billion-user app. “I thought for a long time, there should be a billion-person public conversations app that is a bit more positive and I think that if we keep at this for a few more years, then I think we have a good chance of achieving our vision there,” Zuckerberg said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call.
While it’s still a long way from that goal, the app’s growth is clearly speeding up. Threads reached 100 million users last fall and hit 275 million in early November, according to head of Instagram and supporter of Threads, Adam Mosseri.

Meanwhile, Apple revealed that Threads was the second-most downloaded app in 2024 with shopping app Temu taking the top spot.
The next few weeks could bring some big changes as Meta looks to build on this momentum. According to a recent report by The Information, Meta plans to test ads on Threads starting in early 2025.
Threads isn’t the only platform vying to be the new “public square” as some users move away from X (formerly Twitter). Another app, Bluesky has also grown significantly nearly doubling its user base in November to reach just over 25 million users. However, Bluesky hasn’t revealed how many of its users are active daily.
While Threads is much larger, it seems Meta is paying attention to Bluesky’s features. Recently, Threads rolled out updates inspired by Bluesky’s custom feeds and starter packs, which let users personalize their content experience.
With its rapid growth and upcoming features, Threads is shaping up to be a strong competitor in the social media space.
