Meta is set to transform the user experience on Instagram and Threads by significantly reducing the visibility of political content, unless users explicitly opt-in for such recommendations.
This move, detailed in a recent blog post, aims to tailor content feeds more closely to individual preferences, reducing the exposure to political discussions and debates from sources not actively followed by users.
This policy, initially implemented for Reels, is now being extended across Meta’s broader ecosystem to Threads aswell.
“Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content, while respecting each person’s appetite for it,“ said Instagram head Adam Mosseri, announcing on Threads that the changes will be applied over the next few weeks.
“People have told us they want to see less political content, so we have spent the last few years refining our approach on Facebook to reduce the amount of political content – including from politicians’ accounts – you see in Feed, Reels, Watch, Groups You Should Join, and Pages You May Like,” the company explained in a post on its Transparency Center site, Variety reported.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has emphasized the company’s goal to balance the availability of political content concerning users’ varying levels of interest.
This update will gradually be implemented over the coming weeks, with Facebook expected to follow suit at a yet-to-be-disclosed date.
Users desiring to stay informed on governmental, electoral, or socially significant topics can adjust their settings to continue receiving such content.
This new control mechanism is specifically designed to affect content from public accounts in recommendation areas like Explore and Reels, ensuring that users’ main feeds remain unaffected by the change.
This means content from followed accounts, even if political in nature, will still appear as usual, maintaining the essence of user-curated feeds.
For content creators, this update introduces a critical distinction regarding the recommendability of their accounts based on political content.
Meta clarifies that accounts deemed ineligible for recommendations will see all their content excluded from recommendation areas regardless of its nature.
However, creators have tools, such as the Account Status feature on Instagram, to verify how their content affects their recommendation eligibility.
This feature also offers avenues for contesting decisions or temporarily modifying content strategies to regain recommendation status.
With the realization that political content constitutes a minor fraction of what users encounter and the acknowledgment of the minimal engagement it garners, Meta is clearly prioritizing a content ecosystem that favors personal interests and positivity over political discourse.
Meta is reducing the visibility of unsolicited political content on Instagram and Threads, allowing users to opt-in if they wish to see such content. This policy aims to align content feeds more closely with individual preferences.
Users interested in political, governmental, or social issue content can adjust their settings to continue receiving recommendations. This ensures user control over the type of content appearing in their feeds.
Creators posting political content may find their accounts ineligible for recommendations unless they manage their content through Instagram’s Account Status feature. This tool allows creators to check and contest their recommendation eligibility.
No, the new policy will not affect how you view content from accounts you choose to follow. It only applies to recommendations from public accounts in areas like Explore and Reels.
Meta aims to create a more positive and personalized content ecosystem, reducing political content’s prominence to focus on user interests and engagement over political debates and discussions.
