Meta is set to transform the user experience on Instagram and Threads by significantly reducing the visibility of political content, unless users explicitly opt-in for such recommendations. 

This move, detailed in a recent blog post, aims to tailor content feeds more closely to individual preferences, reducing the exposure to political discussions and debates from sources not actively followed by users. 

This policy, initially implemented for Reels, is now being extended across Meta’s broader ecosystem to Threads aswell.

“Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content, while respecting each person’s appetite for it,“ said Instagram head Adam Mosseri, announcing on Threads that the changes will be applied over the next few weeks.

“People have told us they want to see less political content, so we have spent the last few years refining our approach on Facebook to reduce the amount of political content – including from politicians’ accounts – you see in Feed, Reels, Watch, Groups You Should Join, and Pages You May Like,” the company explained in a post on its Transparency Center site, Variety reported.

User-Controlled Political Content: A New Direction

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has emphasized the company’s goal to balance the availability of political content concerning users’ varying levels of interest. 

This update will gradually be implemented over the coming weeks, with Facebook expected to follow suit at a yet-to-be-disclosed date.
