Here’s more on both new expansion announcements.

Google’s AI Mode Expands to More Languages and Regions

Google announced that its AI Mode feature will now be available in over 35 additional languages and across 40 new countries and territories, expanding access to more than 200 regions globally.

With this latest rollout, the company aims to make its AI Mode more inclusive and accessible, transforming how users interact with Search. The feature will now be available to people regardless of their language or location, allowing for a context-aware, conversational, and intelligent search experience on a larger scale.

In an announcement post reposted by CEO Sundar Pichai on X (formerly Twitter), Robby Stein, VP Product Google Search confirmed that the AI Mode is now live across multiple regions. It includes several parts of Europe, giving users smarter, more natural ways to find information and explore content online.

The global expansion of AI Mode is driven by Google’s Gemini models, which use natural language understanding and multimodal capabilities to deliver more intuitive results. Gemini allows AI Mode to handle a wide range of user interactions, whether typing, speaking, or visual inputs and to understand complex or conversational queries with precision.

Unlike traditional keyword searches, users can ask long, detailed questions, and Google’s AI Mode will respond with accurate and meaningful answers in their preferred language.

Smarter Understanding of Local Languages and Context

A standout element of this expansion is AI Mode’s improved understanding of local languages, dialects, and cultural nuances. Rather than relying solely on direct translations, Google’s AI Mode interprets regional context and tone, ensuring that responses feel authentic, natural, and locally relevant.

NPCI Introduces Biometric Authentication for UPI Payments, Replacing PINs with Fingerprint and Face ID

0

Highlights

  • NPCI now allows users to approve UPI transactions using fingerprint or Face ID.
  • Biometric verification simplifies UPI setup and can also be used for ATM withdrawals, PIN resets.
  • NPCI’s move enhances fraud protection using device-level cryptographic checks and bank-side verification.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has officially rolled out biometric authentication for UPI payments. It will now allow users to approve transactions using fingerprint or facial recognition instead of the traditional 4 or 6 digit PIN. The feature was unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 held on October 7 in Mumbai.

Biometric For UPI Payments

The new NPCI system, which performs biometric verification directly on the user’s device, is designed to offer a faster, safer, and more seamless payment experience. It will serve as an alternative to PIN-based authentication, which has been in use since UPI’s launch in April 2016.

The launch was announced by M Nagaraju M, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance. He described the feature as a “secure and user-friendly evolution” of UPI authentication.

According to NPCI, biometric authentication can also be used for setting or resetting UPI PINs, and even for cash withdrawals at ATMs using UPI. Users who wish to use this feature will need to opt in voluntarily, giving them full control over their preferred authentication method.

“Each transaction is independently verified by the issuing bank using robust cryptographic checks, ensuring the highest level of safety while keeping the experience simple and seamless,NPCI said in its official statement.

Simplifying Onboarding for New Users and Senior Citizens

The introduction of biometrics is expected to significantly simplify UPI onboarding, especially for first-time users and senior citizens.

Until now, setting up a UPI PIN required users to either enter debit card details or go through Aadhaar OTP verification. With the new Aadhaar-based Face Authentication feature, this process becomes faster and more inclusive, particularly benefiting those who don’t have easy access to debit cards.

UPI’s authentication framework consists of two factors, which includes device binding via SMS that acts as the primary factor and PIN or biometric verification as the second factor.

Addressing Security and Fraud Concerns

The move towards biometric authentication comes amid the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) increasing concerns about PIN-related fraud in UPI transactions.

RBI has been urging financial institutions to adopt alternative second-factor authentication methods such as biometric verification or behavioural risk analysis, instead of relying solely on PINs and OTPs.

NPCI has been working on alternative authentication methods for several years. In 2021, it hosted the NPCI PayAuth Challenge, a hackathon that invited startups to design new forms of secure payment authentication. Among the winners were Tech5, Juspay, MinkasuPay, and Infobip. These companies were later allowed to present proofs of concept (POCs) to the UPI Steering Committee, which includes representatives from major banks and UPI apps.

While both Tech5 and MinkasuPay showcased their solutions, banks preferred MinkasuPay’s model, as it required minimal technical adjustments to existing systems.

Meanwhile, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continues to dominate India’s digital payments landscape, accounting for nearly 85% of all online transactions. Each month, the platform processes over 20 billion transactions, amounting to ₹25 lakh crore in value.

FAQs

Q1. What is the new biometric authentication feature for UPI?

Answer. NPCI now allows users to authenticate UPI payments using fingerprint or Face ID instead of a PIN. This device-level biometric verification offers a faster, safer, and more seamless payment experience.

Q2. Can biometric authentication be used for other UPI functions?

Answer. Yes, users can use biometrics to set or reset their UPI PIN and even withdraw cash from ATMs via UPI. Opting in is voluntary, giving users full control over their preferred method.

Q3. How does Biometric UPI benefit senior citizens and new users?

Answer. Biometric onboarding simplifies UPI setup by replacing debit card or OTP-based verification with Aadhaar-based Face Authentication, making it more inclusive and accessible, especially for those without debit cards.

Paytm stated, “Our Playback, India’s first AI-powered rap, brings a playful twist to expense tracking, making it easier to reflect on monthly spending. Young Indians today consume their world as content, and we saw an opportunity to turn routine expense statements into something engaging and relatable. We expect more users to tune in and reflect on their spending habits as they vibe to their rap song, setting them on the path toward greater financial awareness. As a trusted payments platform, we remain committed to introducing innovative solutions and smart tools that make managing finances effortless.”

Users can try out the Playback feature by following these steps –

  • Open the Paytm app on your smartphone.

  • Under the ‘Payment History’ tab, look for the ‘Paytm Playback’ banner.
  • Tap on it and select ‘Let’s Go’ to let Paytm’s AI generate a personalised rap song based on your transactions.

If a user has made no payments through Paytm in the previous month, the feature will not generate a song. However, users can choose to set a reminder and try again the following month once new transactions are available.

Paytm’s First AI-Driven Feature

Sharma emphasised that Paytm Playback is the company’s first AI-powered consumer feature, marking a new step in how AI can enhance financial interactions. “AI will allow us to create products that weren’t possible before. Like making a song of your spends! And, we are raising the bar in consumer UPI payments,” he said.

The feature has quickly gained attention on social media with users sharing their AI-generated raps and humorous reactions. One user, Ujjwal Rastogi posted on X, “Just spent ₹54K to become a rap star… now my bank needs therapy.”

Data Privacy Concerns

While the new feature has created buzz online, it has also raised privacy concerns. Paytm has not yet shared details about the data protection measures or privacy protocols used in the Playback system.

Key questions remain unanswered including whether the feature is strictly opt-in, if users can withdraw consent or delete their generated songs, and which AI models are being used.

Moreover, Paytm has not clarified what transaction data is being processed such as merchant names, timestamps, locations, or payment amounts, or whether the system filters out sensitive information related to health, religion, or political donations.

The Delhi government, in collaboration with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), has announced a new initiative to train 100 school teachers in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for personalised learning and improved classroom assessments.

The training programme aims to equip teachers with the skills to integrate AI into their teaching practices, enabling them to adopt more innovative and efficient approaches to education. According to an official SCERT circular released on Friday, the move is part of Delhi’s broader effort to prepare students for a digitally-driven future.

Beyond classroom teaching, the initiative will also help educators handle non-teaching responsibilities such as creating PowerPoint presentations, designing extracurricular activities, and editing visuals, a government official told PTI.

Training Under the AI-Mediated Classroom Project

The hands-on training will be held on October 8 and 9 under the ‘AI-Mediated Classroom Project’, a special programme designed to familiarise teachers with AI-based tools and their applications in education.

Currently, Delhi’s government school system includes 1,075 schools, 16,633 teachers, and 8,24,224 students.

According to SCERT, the project will be implemented in two phases.

In the first phase, 100 Computer Science teachers from 50 selected government schools will undergo a two-day capacity-building programme. These trained teachers will later act as master trainers for their respective institutions.

“Once trained, these 100 teachers will serve as master trainers and will guide other teachers on effectively using AI tools,” an official said.

The second phase will focus on school-level training for subject teachers of Mathematics, Science, English, Hindi, and Social Science, primarily those teaching Classes 6 and 9. Each participating school will nominate three teachers from each subject, totalling 15 teachers per school, to receive the training.

Follow-Up Sessions and Feedback

SCERT officials confirmed that the project will include follow-up sessions and feedback collection to evaluate how effectively teachers are using the introduced AI tools in real classrooms. “We are not only launching this initiative but will also conduct follow-up sessions and gather feedback from teachers to assess how well they are able to use these tools,” he added.

The official further explained that teachers often spend significant time preparing teaching materials, visual aids, and cultural activity plans. “With AI assisting in these areas, teachers can devote more time to interacting with students and enhancing the quality of classroom learning,” he said.

Some of the tools likely to be included in the training are –

  • Napkin, which generates images from text.
  • Gamma, a tool that quickly creates PowerPoint presentations.

Building Future-Ready Classrooms

SCERT stated that the AI-Mediated Classroom Project aligns with Delhi’s vision of creating future-ready classrooms and promoting AI integration in school education.

“It aims to empower teachers to adopt innovative pedagogical methods, enhance classroom engagement, and improve learning outcomes through AI-based practices, the department said.

The Directorate of Education has already identified and recommended 50 government schools across Delhi for the pilot phase and selected 100 teachers to participate in the initial round of training, SCERT confirmed.

FAQs

Q1. What is the goal of the AI-Mediated Classroom Project in Delhi?

Answer. The project aims to train teachers to use AI tools for personalised learning, smarter assessments, and efficient handling of non-teaching tasks like presentations and activity planning.

Q2. Who will be trained and how is the program structured at AI-mediated classroom project?

Answer. In phase one, 100 Computer Science teachers from 50 government schools will undergo hands-on training and become master trainers. Phase two will train subject teachers from Classes 6 and 9 across five key subjects.

Q3. What kind of AI tools will teachers learn to use during AI-mediated classroom project?

Answer. Teachers will be introduced to tools like Napkin (for generating images from text) and Gamma (for creating presentations), helping them save time and enhance classroom engagement.

Other apps – ChatGPT now also connects with Zapier, Slack, and Google Drive, broadening its utility for workflow automation, communication, and file management.

New Apps SDK for Developers

Alongside these integrations, OpenAI has also introduced a preview of its new Apps SDK, which will enable third-party developers to build custom integrations for ChatGPT. The SDK is built on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) and comes with developer documentation with broader access expected later this year.
