YouTube has been experimenting with some necessary but mostly unnecessary features that no one asked for.

From changing the position of the comments section to making ads unskippable to testing generative AI for auto-commenting, all these features do not particularly make life easier for a user.

The trend seems to continuing with the streaming platform testing other strange features. The latest we are hearing about it is the YouTube hyperlink comments.

According to multiple media reports, YouTube Hyperlinked comments are now appearing for more people than was noticed last time when the feature was being tested.

The feature is making the comments section look not only strange but also a bit spammy.

YouTube says it is a better way for you to find more videos about a particular topic.

In the YouTube Hyperlink comments feature, whenever a user posts a comment on a video, they get several related video links hyperlinked in the comment section.

The links appear in a blue hyperlink form with a small eyeglass icon, which indicates the text is clickable.

image

The streaming platform believes that this feature is a better way to “reduce friction” when users are trying to learn about a specific topic on the platform.

Users can click on the blue hyperlink that appears in their comments to go to a new search page. Meanwhile, the mini-player will stay as it is so that users can continue watching the original video as well.

A 9to5Google report reveals that a commenter cannot add or edit the hyperlinks.

In a Creator Insider announcement video, YouTube earlier said that creators on the platform would be able to remove hyperlinks from their videos if they want to. However, 9to5Google team reveals no such option is available for creators in the YT Studio as of now.

YouTube has been testing the hyperlinked comment feature since a trial run in 2023. It first appeared on limited videos on the platform on an experimental basis.

It is not clear what criteria YouTube is using to convert specific work tags into clickable hyperlinks in the comment section.

As of now, it seems to be randomly picked

In a recent Linus Tech Tips video, several hyperlink comments can be seen linked to other videos on the  Fallout 76 video topic.

image

Several commentators online have been critical of the feature so far calling it spammy.

9to5Google’s Damien Wilde also criticised the current execution as it appeared “eerily reminiscent of some of the scammy Chrome extensions that will laden your browser with ads on phrases and search terms by taking you to storefronts and shady websites. It also clogs up and creates a strange spammy look to what has been a fairly clean experience for a few years.”

The feature as of now is only visible on YouTube mobile as per reports.

You cannot obviously deny that getting related video links in the comment section can be useful when you are researching specific topics, but it appears YouTube has to work on execution as the current feature design makes it look like spam.

As the release date approaches, we may see more details emerge on Apple’s plans and iPhone 17 Key details also.

As of now, not much has been revealed about next year’s iPhone 17 Series.

Based on rumours, we have four iPhones to look forward to in 2025: the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 “Slim” or “Air.”

It was previously revealed that Apple is moving on from the Plus models, so there will be no iPhone 17 Plus this time.

As teased by Apple’s marketing VP Greg Joswiak recently, Apple is all set to introduce several new M4 Mac models in the coming week.

Even though the MacBook Air won’t be part of that lineup, recent reports indicate fans won’t have to wait much longer for a refreshed MacBook Air.

According to display analyst Ross Young, shipments for displays for both the new MacBook Air and iPhone SE 4 are about to start.

In subscriber-only posts on X, Young noted that panel shipments for the M4 MacBook Air are set to begin this month, signalling that the device’s release is likely just a few months away.

The iPhone SE 4’s display shipments, meanwhile, are expected to kick off in November. With typical lead times of about three months, both products appear on track for an early 2025 launch.

Based on Apple’s pattern, early March seems a likely timeframe for both devices. The M3 MacBook Air debuted in March of this year, while the last iPhone SE launched in March 2022.

Young also revealed that there is a possibility that the new MacBook Air will be available in both 13.3 and 15.3-inch sizes. However, any change to the smaller display size seems highly unlikely.

Apple probably won’t alter the display size for just one of the MacBook Air models as of now. It appears the company is focusing on the device’s release timing rather than a size adjustment.

As for now, Apple will release the new MacBook Pros, Mac Minis and iMacs in the coming week.

A refreshed Mac Studio is also expected to be launched sometime between March and June next year after a software release in March.

Generative image editing is everywhere now to the point that it is often difficult to identify real images from AI-edited images.

Google Photos is now taking the lead to make it easier to see if an image has been edited with AI.

As per recent reports, Google Photos is adding a new “AI info” section to the photo details.

In a time where generative AI on image editing is making complex image adjustments widely accessible to users, such tags can be very helpful in identifying what’s real.

“AI Info” Section in Google Photos

Google Photos is going to identify such edits through an info section

Google announced the details of the new feature in a blog post titled “More transparency for AI edits in Google Photos.”

With the new Google Photos update users can swipe up on an image in Google Photos to get a new “AI info” section under “Details” for images that includes AI editing elements.

The “AI Info” details will appear along with the file name, backup status and location. It will identified by an “i” icon with a sparkle.

This feature is coming to Google Photos on Android, iOS, and the web.

John Fisher, Engineering Director of Google Photos and Google One, mentioned in the blog post, “Photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and Zoom Enhance already include metadata based on technical standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to indicate that they’ve been edited using generative AI. [..] Now we’re taking it a step further, making this information visible alongside information like the file name, location and backup status in the Photos app.”

The new “AI info” section will show details in two specific fields including Credit and Digital Source Type.

The “Credit” field notes edits made with Google’s AI, using tags like “Edited with Google AI” or “Made by Google AI” for edits created in tools like Pixel Studio and Gemini.

On the other hand, the “Digital Source Type” field specifies the types of edits applied.

The “Edited using Generative AI” indicates the use of tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance.

While Zoom Enhance is exclusive to Google devices, the “Magic” tools are available to all Google Photos users on Android and iOS.

Secondly, there will be a “Composite of captured elements” to mark features like Best Take and Add Me, exclusive to Pixel devices, which don’t use AI but don’t capture an actual single moment.

As per Google’ss blog post, the “AI Info” tag will not be limited to Google tools. Google is expanding this to apply to images that follow metadata standards set by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), which includes both “Credit” and “Digital Source Type” details.

Google also highlighted that removing distractions, enhancing lighting and creating new compositions are now easier thanks to AI.

“As we bring these tools to more people, we recognize the importance of doing so responsibly with our AI Principles as guidance,” says Google.

Google is also flagging images created by blending multiple photos, such as those produced by the “Best Take” feature on Pixel phones.

Looking forward, Google aims to expand transparency around AI edits, reinforced by its recent partnership with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA).

“This work is not done, and we’ll continue gathering feedback and evaluating additional solutions to add more transparency around AI edits,” Fisher wrote in the blog post.

The Indian entertainment industry is anticipating a major restructuring with the much-anticipated merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar.

Industry analysts have predicted that the merged platform could soon dominate the Indian streaming space. The merger deal has been in the spotlight for quite a few months now but the recent news has taken every by surprise.

In an unexpected move, a tech-savvy individual from Delhi has acquired the domain name JioHotstar.com anticipating the future of the merged platform. While this could complicate plans for a unified streaming service under that name, the techie had some demands planned. Here’s the complete story.

Details of the JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar deal have been under wrap for now, but certain rumours suggested that the combined platform could be named JioHotstar.

Before the rumour could be confirmed, it was reported that the domain name JioHotstar.com had already been claimed by a Delhi-based app developer.

The domain now leads to a simple webpage with the message “Best of Entertainment, Streaming Soon,” alongside a message for Reliance executives, explaining the story behind the domain’s acquisition.

The developer reveals that he seized the domain in early 2023 after hearing reports of a potential merger due to Disney+ Hotstar’s subscriber loss, particularly after losing IPL streaming rights.

He shares, “I am an app developer based in Delhi, currently working on my startup. I came across news about Disney+ Hotstar’s dip in active users and thought Reliance could be the one to acquire it.”

Inspired by Jio’s past rebranding of Saavn to JioSaavn, he decided to check for the availability of the domain JioHotstar—and found it open.

The developer, however, isn’t looking for a quick gain.

In a heartfelt request on the domain’s homepage, he asks Reliance to help fund his dream of attending Cambridge University’s entrepreneurship program in exchange for the domain.

He shares his journey, explaining that a past project of his was selected for Cambridge’s Accelerate program but that financial constraints kept him from attending.

He writes, “Cambridge offers a full degree program in entrepreneurship, which I’ve always dreamed of pursuing but could never afford… I thought, ‘This might just be the opportunity to make that dream happen.”

The screenshots of the domain went viral on X (previously Twitter).

Many users quickly came in support of the developer and expressed how Reliance can easily support his education. A user on X wrote, “Not gonna lie this is a really smart move and I’m pretty sure that £93,345 ain’t going waste.”

Another user commented, “I hope some lawyer comes forward and represents him.”

Reliance Declines Request

Meanwhile, the developer also updated the webpage with news of his request to Reliance for £93,345—matching Cambridge’s program fees—which was turned down by Ambujesh Yadav, AVP of Commercials at Reliance.

Yadav reportedly declined the proposal, even hinting at possible legal action to reclaim the domain.

In the update, the developer wrote, “I don’t have the power to stand against Reliance. I might automatically lose access of this domain in few hours. If any legal professional could help, I would be grateful.”

As the merger moves ahead, it remains to be seen how Reliance responds to this unexpected incident.

WhatsApp Testing Personalised Emoji Reactions, Custom Stickers and More

0

Highlights

  • WhatsApp is testing personalised emoji reactions similar to Instagram and Telegram.
  • Also, a feature to let users create their own sticker packs directly within the app.
  • A video autoplay feature for channels is also being tested.

Ever since Meta acquired three of the most influential social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, the company has often picked a leaf from one app to replicate the feature on another.

WhatsApp somehow has been on the receiving end of features more than the other two apps.

The messaging app has introduced a variety of tools, including Communities, channels and end-to-end encryption to align with other apps like Instagram and Telegram to suit perfect modern communication needs.

We recently reported on the upcoming music support for WhatsApp’s Status Updates and now, it appears WhatsApp is also testing some other features taking hints from Instagram.

As per a recent WABetaInfo update, WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow its users to react to messages with their most recently used emojis.

WABetaInfo has been a reliable source for WhatsApp features and updates.

This new feature was spotted by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.22.16.

It brings personalised emoji reactions to the platform similar to how they work on Instagram, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, and Slack.

Currently, WhatsApp’s default reaction list includes 👍, ❤️, 😂, 😮, 😢, and 🙏.  After the update, users will be able to see their top seven most-used emojis at the top of the list, making reactions quicker and more personal.

Moreover, users can swipe left to access more emojis or use the + button to explore the full emoji list.

Create Your Own Sticker Packs

In a separate WABetaInfo report, it is suggested that WhatsApp is testing the ability for users to create and share their own sticker packs.

This feature reportedly is available in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.22.13 and it will let users design and customize their stickers directly within the app.

Currently, users often rely on third-party apps for sticker creation, so this new feature simplifies the process.

Users will be able to tap on any sticker and choose the “Create your own” option allowing them to build custom packs.

This update also helps with sticker organization, allowing users to easily manage their favourite stickers without cluttering their “Favourites” section.

WhatsApp Testing Video Autoplay Feature for Channels

Mashable, in one of its recent reports, mentioned that another feature being tested in the beta version will allow video autoplay for channels. This if true will make it easier for users to consume content without additional clicks.

As of now, it is still unclear when these features will be available in the stable version.
