Well, we know Apple is focusing on developing a robust and innovative range of products other than iPhones. As per recent updates, we might just get an Apple TV sometime in the future.

Bloomberg’s Apple reporter Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, revealed that Apple is reportedly considering the idea of launching an Apple-branded TV set. However, it’s not something we’ll see anytime soon.

Gurman suggests this potential Apple TV set would only come after Apple releases its upcoming smart display lineup, which is still a work in progress.

Apple’s first smart display, which is often referred to as ‘HomePad,’ is expected to debut early next year as a more affordable option. A higher-end model with a larger screen and a robotic arm is also in the pipeline.

But there’s a catch.

Gurman believes Apple’s plans could shift if the initial smart display products don’t succeed. ” It may even revisit the idea of making an Apple-branded TV set, something it’s evaluating. But if the first device fails, Apple may have to rethink its smart home ambitions once again,” he writes. This makes the rumoured Apple TV set far from a sure thing.

Among other categories, the Cupertino Giant is also investing more resources into developing, privacy-focused home cameras, speakers and mobile robots.

Between around 2009 and 2011, it was repeatedly rumored that Apple would be releasing a TV, but it didn’t happen .

Some tech enthusiasts believe Apple might already have enough of a presence in the TV market with its Apple TV boxes.

Moreover, the company may prefer promoting its Apple Vision Pro as the ultimate home theatre solution, which could conflict with the idea of introducing a dedicated Apple-branded TV.

While an Apple TV set could carve out a niche in the high-end market, it seems more like a possibility than a certainty for now.

Rumours about the next-generation AirTag have been doing rounds since the launch of the first AirTag in 2021.

However, it appears we are finally getting some solid updates on a possible launch timeline and some sneak peek at what exactly Apple has in stores.

In his recent newsletter, Bloomberg’s Apple reporter Mark Gurman touched upon the topic of Apple’s plans for AirTag 2.

According to Gurman, Apple is gearing up for a possible AirTag 2 launch sometime halfway into 2025.

Gurman also revealed that while Apple might not make any drastic changes to the core design of the AirTag, we can expect some upgrades in the upcoming model.

The upcoming AirTag 2 is codenamed B589 and has reportedly “progressed in manufacturing tests.” The three upgrades Gurman highlighted in his newsletter include better range, improved wireless chip and improved privacy.

The product will soon be coming to market, with three improvements – Better range ,Improved wireless chip & Improved privacy.

Some reports previously predicted that the next-gen AirTags will have better range and a wireless chip. However, Apple focusing on privacy for AirTags is a new reveal.

The enhanced privacy feature in AirTag 2 will “include making it more difficult for someone to remove the speaker from the AirTag.”

It is a welcome step that Apple is paying more attention to privacy for AirTags users considering there have been incidents of stalking via AirTags. Apple could be working to address such privacy concerns with the new model.

Highlighting how enhanced privacy on AirTags would be a good thing, Gurman stated, “Since the device launched in 2021, some people have unfortunately used the product as a tool for stalking — and removing the speaker makes it less likely for someone to discover a hidden AirTag. Apple is contending with lawsuits over the device, and it’s in everyone’s interest to make the new model more tamper-proof.”

The first AirTag was launched in 2021 after rumours around it had a free run for more than 2 years. The rumours started back in 2019 when iOS 13 references were leaked and a product with the B389 codename was discovered online. Currently, AirTags are available for $19 for a pack of 1 and $79.98 for a pack of 4.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has spoken on the need for social media platforms to fairly compensate traditional news organizations for the content shared and consumed on their platforms.

Speaking on National Press Day, Vaishnaw highlighted the significant challenges news outlets face in today’s evolving digital landscape.

He shared four challenges we face today, which included the following –

  • Fake news & disinformation
  • Fair compensation by platforms
  • Algorithmic bias
  • Impact of AI on Intellectual Property

Vaishnaw pointed out that the rise of social media has shifted news consumption away from the digital platforms of conventional news outlets, leading to revenue losses. Emphasising the extensive investment made by traditional media in creating quality content, the Minister said, “The investment done in creating a team of journalists, training them, having editorial processes, having methods to check the veracity of news, taking the responsibility for the content, all those investments are huge in terms of time and money.”

He noted that these efforts were being undermined by the dominant advantage social media platforms have over traditional media.

Vaishnaw also raised concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media and highlighted how it has led to incidents of violence, terrorism and interference in democratic processes globally.

He argued that platforms have “shied away from the responsibility for the content” because of the concept of safe harbouring.

“With our diverse society, we have to be extra careful. Therefore, when the circumstances are different, should not there be different metrics for the platforms?” he stated.

The minister flagged additional issues like algorithmic biases on social media platforms, which prioritize content that evokes strong reactions, and the impact of artificial intelligence on intellectual property rights.

Both, he said, are significant challenges faced by Indian internet users today.

Vaishnaw’s remarks underscore the growing need to create a fairer digital ecosystem where news organizations are adequately compensated and accountability for the content on social platforms is ensured.

FAQs

Q1. Why does Vaishnaw believe social media platforms should compensate news organisations?

Answer. Vaishnaw highlighted the significant challenges news outlets face in today’s digital landscape, including revenue losses due to the shift in news consumption away from traditional media to social media platforms. He emphasized the extensive investment made by traditional media in creating quality content, which is being undermined by the dominant advantage social media platforms have.

Q2. What concerns did Vaishnaw raise about fake news on social media?

Answer. Vaishnaw raised concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media, leading to incidents of violence, terrorism, and interference in democratic processes globally. He argued that platforms have shied away from responsibility for the content because of the concept of safe harbouring.

Q3. What issues related to algorithmic biases and AI did Vaishnaw flag?

Answer. Vaishnaw flagged issues like algorithmic biases on social media platforms, which prioritize content that evokes strong reactions, and the impact of artificial intelligence on intellectual property rights, describing these as significant challenges faced by Indian internet users today.

ISRO has partnered with SpaceX for the commercial launch of its most advanced communications satellite GSAT-20 (also called GSAT-N2).

The satellite will be launched early next week aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, USA.

India joins with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch its most advanced satellite next week

The 4,700 kg GSAT-N2 satellite built by ISRO is too heavy for India’s largest rocket the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (nicknamed “The Bahubali”). It can carry a maximum of about 4,100 kg to a geostationary transfer orbit. India has always relied on Arianespace for heavy launches.

However, SpaceX this time has emerged as the most viable option considering no operational rockets are currently available there and the Chinese rockets are off-limits.

Chairman and Managing Director of New Space India Ltd (NSIL) ISRO’s commercial arm Radhakrishnan Durairaj said, “We got a good deal on this maiden launch with SpaceX.”

Describing the deal with SpaceX as favourable, Durairaj also said, “The price for launching this particular satellite… the technical compatibility and also the commercial deals… I would say it was a good deal for us, for launching such a heavy satellite on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

GSAT-N2 has a mission life of 14 years and is equipped with 32 user beams—eight for narrow spot coverage over the northeast and 24 wide spot beams for the rest of India. Supported by hub stations in mainland India, the satellite will also facilitate in-flight internet connectivity.

The launch is estimated to cost $60–70 million, making it a significant investment in India’s space and communications technology.

This collaboration comes as Elon Musk’s SpaceX continues efforts to bring its Starlink satellite-based internet services to India. Musk has already expressed enthusiasm for Starlink’s potential in India saying, “I look forward to bringing Starlink to India where it will help remote villages.”

However, India’s Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified that Starlink must first meet the country’s stringent security norms before being granted a license. Scindia said, “We are more than happy to give them (licence) if they (Starlink) comply with all the conditions. You have to look at it from a security perspective, making sure that all security concerns are addressed. When they do that, we will be more than happy to give it. Obviously, they are in the process of doing it.”

Security Concerns Around Starlink

image
Kutniti Foundation’s recent report highlights national security concerns with Starlink coming to India. (Image credit – Starlink)

Meanwhile, a report by the Kutniti Foundation has raised concerns about Starlink’s operations. The report described Starlink as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” The report highlighted that Starlink’s dual-use technology serves both civilian and military purposes, with strong ties to the U.S. government.

The report stated, “Starlink’s constellation of satellites enables a new, borderless internet access, bypassing local governance structures and granting direct access between individual users and American authorities.”

The report warned that Starlink’s infrastructure could potentially be used for surveillance or strategic purposes, posing risks to India’s national security.

The recent tip comes from reliable leaker Ice Universe. Tipster claims Samsung will fully commit to Snapdragon for its flagship lineup.

This suggests a major shift for the upcoming Galaxy S25 series where all models will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, skipping the Exynos 2500 entirely.

Wh y Samsung Might Go For Snapdragon 8 Elite Instead of Exynos?

The speculation that Samsung has potentially decided to let go of Exynos for Snapdragon seems tied to manufacturing challenges.

As per certain reports, the Exynos 2500 is built on Samsung Foundry’s 3nm process and has a yield rate of just 20%, which means only 20% of the chips produced are usable. In comparison, TSMC’s 3nm process that powers the Snapdragon 8 Elite boasts a yield rate above 80%.

Low yield rates raise production costs and make Exynos seem a less viable option. Samsung is also reportedly considering outsourcing Exynos chip production to TSMC, which could align it with other chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Base Galaxy S25 Spotted in Geekbench

Meanwhile, the Geekbench listing for the base Galaxy S25 has surfaced online shedding some light on its specs.

Spotted by the Gizmochina team with the model number “SM-S931N”, which is mostly likely the Korean version of the smartphone, it appears the device runs on the customised Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset.

The Gizmochina report also highlights that the performance scores of the phone on Geekbench are underwhelming. The Galaxy S25 scored 2481 in single-core and 8658 in multi-core tests, lagging behind rivals like the OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13, which scored over 3100 and 10,000 in the same tests.

No official confirmation has been made about the Galaxy S25 lineup yet. It is expected to debut in January 2025 with more details likely to emerge as the launch date approaches.
