The variety of apps requesting camera and microphone permissions on smartphones has reportedly grown from 45% to 68% and 28% to 54% respectively over the past five years, revealed a study.

Google is the third largest party data is shared with, followed by Facebook. Google trackers were featured in 97% of websites and Facebook trackers in 55%, as per the study by Arrka, a data security and privacy firm.

The study, titled “Data privacy status of Indian mobile apps and websites”, involved 201 Indian mobile apps and websites from 100 organizations across 25 industries. Arrka has monitored various privacy metrics over five years.

According to the findings, about 42% of Android apps share data with Google and 25% with Facebook. One possible reason could be that organizations provide newer services / features based on these permissions.

Shivangi Nadkarni, CEO, and Sandeep Rao, principal consultant at Arrka, said, “India Inc. appears to have continued its trajectory of low attention to data privacy, with the unspoken ‘let the law come’ paradigm. This is evident from the data in this study where most of the specific privacy parameters seem to have only gotten worse.”

Even in corporate governance, what we really need is that if our unicorns have to become real value adding companies and if our startups have to go up and become the best in the world, the adoption of ethical corporate governance standards become very important part of it. I am sure that the solutions coming out of the Enterprise Innovation Challenge will help not just corporates but also the Government.”

In India alone, the assets under management for ESG funds rose by 2.5 times in just a year. From 275 million USD in Fiscal Year 20, the assets under management for ESG funds went up to 650 million USD in Fiscal Year 21.”

Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute) said, “To move in the right direction for ESG, one of the most fundamental and crucial things is mindset. As a society we need to adopt the right mindset to achieve our goals. From an industrial perspective, it is not only the production and processes but also the raw material which goes in which needs to be looked into from our ESG goals perspective.”

Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc said, “Judging companies by their ESG score has picked up immense momentum. In our industry Digital technologies are playing a critical role in driving ESG goals but it also has to involve society by spreading awareness around on these goals.”

Wearing masks has become a new reality for the past two years now. Due to the whole Pandemic situation arising in the world, masks have been an integral part of our identities, however, for the Apple users, they prevailed as the worst nightmare. iPhone works on the face unlocking feature, and due to the whole mask restrictions, it was difficult for the users to unlock their phone while on the move with their masks on. Therefore, Apple has managed to find a way around the problem of using FaceID while using masks. What is it? Let’s find out!

Face ID with mask on

Since the government is very strict with making masks a necessity before venturing out, this feature on iPhone has been awaited a lot. As many iPhone users prefer face unlocking rather than fingerprint unlocking, FaceID with a mask feature is the catch for every user.

Although an iPhone can be unlocked even with a mask on only if you have an apple watch. This new update removes the need for an Apple watch. Face ID with a mask works by recognizing the area around the eyes when the mask is on, not the most secure but convenient for sure. Unlike Face ID with the Apple Watch, the mask version works with Apple pay and can be used to authenticate third-party apps as well.

With this new update, Apple has also created a shortcut on the screen to enter the passcode immediately. The passcode option will appear on the screen as soon as you unlock the device, eliminating the time to wait or the FaceID to attempt unlocking unsuccessfully.

Who can use this feature?

Unfortunately, if you have iPhone 11 or earlier, you will not find the Face ID with mask feature even after updating to iOS 15.4, nor will you have the option to toggle it on in the Settings app.

Face ID with the mask is limited to Apple’s newest iPhones, even though the face lock feature was introduced with the launch of the iPhone X. The new Face ID with mask feature only works on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 Generations. Thus, you must have an ?iPhone 12?, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max or an iPhone 13 mini, 13 Pro, or 13 Pro Max to avail of this feature.

Microsoft mitigates record-breaking 3.47 Tbps DDoS attack

Microsoft
It underscores the need for robust backup systems and diversified IT infrastructure

Microsoft this week revealed that it countered a record number of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against its Azure customers. According to a blog post by the company, it is the largest mitigated attack in history.

The attack originated from roughly 10,000 sources across the world. It used a combination of numerous attack methods for UDP reflection on port 80, including SSDP, CLDAP, DNS, and NTP. The attack lasted around 15 minutes.

Azure Networking product manager Alethea Toh said, “This was a distributed attack originating from approximately 10,000 sources and from multiple countries across the globe, including the United States, China, South Korea, Russia, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Iran, Indonesia, and Taiwan”.

One of the DDoS attacks, which lasted 15 minutes and targeted an unknown Azure customer in Asia, occurred in November of last year. It had a peak throughput of 3.47 terabits per second (Tbps) and a packet rate of 340 million packets per second (pps), making it the largest cyberattack ever reported in history.

Then, in December, Microsoft announced that it had thwarted two further attacks with a combined bandwidth of more than 2.5 Tbps, both targeting Asian consumers. The first attack was a 3.25 Tbps UDP flood that lasted just over five minutes, while the second was a 2.55 Tbps UDP flood that lingered just a little over five minutes.

These attacks are part of an unprecedented number of attacks seen around the world in the second half of 2021, according to Microsoft. In October, the tech behemoth saw a 30-fold increase in DDoS attacks in India alone.

“Our customers do not have to worry about how to protect their workloads in Azure in these cases,” the company wrote in the report. “Azure’s DDoS protection platform, which is based on distributed DDoS detection and mitigation pipelines, can scale massively to absorb the biggest volume of DDoS attacks and provide our customers with the level of protection they require.”

The company also stated that its DDoS security services will continuously monitor its customers’ web services and cleanse any malicious traffic from the Azure network before it can disrupt services.
