iQOO Z5 Review: Good at everything and superb in gaming

0

Although it’s bullish about its prospects to be a leader in the Rs 20K-30K price segment, iQOO is somewhat choosy with its launches in India. First, it was iQOO 7 series, then came iQOO Z3, and now it’s iQOO Z5. This time, it’s said to be very significant in terms of pricing – while the flagship iQOO 7 series (launched in April) sits at the upper limit, iQOO Z3 (unveiled in June) comes at the lower end of the price bracket. The all-new iQOO Z5 fits nicely between the two.

The recently-introduced iQOO Z5 smartphone costs Rs 23,990 for the 8GB+128GB variant, whereas its 12GB+256GB model is priced at Rs 26,990. The phone comes in two colour options – Arctic Dawn and Mystic Space – and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC, besides sporting a triple camera set-up and a massive battery that is enough for a day to keep you going. We had the upper variant in Arctic Dawn colour for review and here’s what we think about it.

Design

The all-new iQOO Z5 sports a simple and sober design, and is very much reminiscent of the iQOO 7. Made up of a polycarbonate rear panel, it has a 3D curved back with a frosted texture and a matte finish, which is fingerprint-resistant. The smartphone features a punch-hole cut out, housing the front camera, at the top of the screen. There’s a slightly protruded rectangular camera module and iQOO branding underneath on the back panel.

You get a headphone jack on the top, whereas the bottom of the device houses a SIM tray, a USB Type-C port and a speaker grille. While the left side of the smartphone is plain, on the right you get volume buttons and a power button that doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. These buttons are very much accessible with your thumb and you do not need to shuffle your fingers to hold this phone in your palm. It will not slip out of your hand.

The smartphone has a sleek frame that gels well with the frosted matte finish, which gives it a very decent look, notwithstanding the plastic body, which thankfully makes it lightweight too. The Arctic Dawn colour variant particularly looks so beautiful that you would like to avoid putting a case on this.

Display

The iQOO Z5 ships with a 6.67-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display, skipping the superior AMOLED trend in the given price range. There are thin bezels around with exception at the chin, although it doesn’t look bad. Thankfully, the display has a high 120Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. Besides, it comes with Widevine L1 certification for streaming HD content on OTT platforms as well as HDR10 support.

The display is bright and well-tuned even under direct sunlight. What’s more, you also get Eye Protection with the TuV Rheinland certification. There are variable refresh rate modes that you can set to 60Hz, 90Hz or 120HZ, or use a smart auto-switch option that will dynamically change refresh rate based on your usage. Despite lacking the high contrast look, there’s plenty to love about this display, which is good enough to enjoy gaming, binge watching, browsing social media, etc.

Platform

The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC. Although it’s not a flagship chipset, it’s fairly best in the segment. The one that I reviewed had 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The smartphone will not disappoint you in terms of performance, as it flies through day-to-day tasks, multiple apps as well as graphic-intensive games. The chipset managed a single-core score of 807 points and a multi-core score of 3009 points in our Geekbench 5 test.

Although I’m not much into it, gaming is so smooth that you’ll hardly experience any hiccups on this phone. The handset, however, gets somewhat warm during extended sessions, but not hot enough to cause any issue. The iQOO Z5 also comes with Extended RAM 2.0 that allows you to use 4GB of the storage as RAM, which is like cherry on the cake, to further help performance. The smartphone also features a liquid cooling system that is said to reduce the surface temperature of the mobile phone by about 3°C and the CPU junction temperature by about 12°C for CPU-intensive games.

In terms of software, the device runs Android 11-based Funtouch OS 12, which comes with a lot of customisations along with a dedicated game bar (Game Space) that can be accessed by swiping right during a game. Besides, it brings several modes for gaming, including a high-performance mode, battery saving mode, and more. While it’s a very refined software offering a neat interface and sober menu layouts, it also comes preloaded with bloatware – a few iQOO apps and some third-party apps that can be uninstalled. The software experience on this phone was amazingly good though.

Cameras

The all-new iQOO smartphone houses a triple-camera setup on the back with a 64MP, f/1.8 aperture primary sensor, an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide shooter and a 2MP macro lens. On the front, you get a 16MP camera for video calls and selfies. While the main camera can capture 4K and 1080p video at 60fps, the front camera is limited to 1080p recording at 30fps.

Talking about their performance, you get good photos in daylight with plenty of detail and vivid colours, however it’s not so in the lowlight conditions. Capturing pictures is also fairly quick. Even though the camera system doesn’t offer OIS (optical image stabilisation), the video performance is pretty decent. Macro shots and Night Mode worked better than expected.

The similar story goes on with the 16MP front camera, which does a superb job with selfies retaining good detail and natural looking skin tones. Overall, the smartphone offers a decent camera setup justifying its price.

Battery

The smartphone is backed by a massive 5,000mAh battery and comes with 44W fast charging support with an adapter included in the box. It can deliver over a day of battery life with heavy usage and can easily hit a day and a half with medium usage. The charger can fully power up the device in less than an hour. The battery performance was on par with expectations.

Conclusion

The iQOO Z5 is pretty decent in almost every department. It has got an impressive design, a nice display, a great processor, a wonderful camera setup and a reliable battery backup. It will not disappoint you in terms of performance and is built with gamers in mind, taking into account its many performance enhancements and buttery-smooth 120Hz display. On the flip side, the smartphone has a plastic build, an LCD screen and no storage expansion, but these things are insignificant to be pointed out. Taken as a whole, the all-new iQOO smartphone is good at everything and superb in gaming. The smartphone is a worthy consideration, if you are looking for a value proposition at the given price point.

Clubhouse announces 13 new languages and new app icon

0

Clubhouse today announced the addition of 13 new languages to make it more accessible to people who want to see the platform available in their native languages. The 13 languages are – Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian) and Spanish.

In addition to the multiple languages, Clubhouse also announced a brand-new app icon, featuring musician, singer and songwriter Anirudh Deshmukh.

In the year or so since Clubhouse hit the App Store, we’ve seen millions of people meet, make friends, have deep talks, share ideas, hang out and even get married on the app. The variety of conversations is increasing each day — from Steve telling people how to load their dishwashers to entire rooms dedicated to debating cousin Greg’s true intentions in Succession. It has honestly amazed us that people in so many countries have managed to come together to do this on an app that only supports English.

Today, all of that is changing, as Clubhouse are rolling out their first wave of local language support. They are starting on Android with thirteen new languages launching immediately — including French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, Tamil, and Telugu. They will be adding support for iOS and additional languages soon, so that people from Mumbai and Paris to Sao Pãulo and Jakarta can experience Clubhouse in a way that feels a bit more native to them.

Of course, the platform couldn’t take such a momentous step without ushering in a new app icon, as well — Anirudh Deshmukh!

Anirudh is a part of an incredible corner of Clubhouse where hundreds of different languages are spoken. And just like his predecessor Mandiie Martinez, founder of the Chingona AF club, Anirudh is a multi-hyphenate human of many talents. He’s an architect turned singer, songwriter, composer, and more. Based in Mumbai, Anirudh joined Clubhouse at the start of the year and by the spring, had launched his now 72K member club, Anirudh, where he hosts his nightly show ‘Late Night Jam.’ Budding artists from around the world have come to love Anirudh for the authenticity and genuine support he shares, as he encourages them each night to take the stage and share their music, poetry, and life experiences.

Indian Electronics Poised To Be $300 Bn Industry in 3-4 Years

0

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, released Vision Document (Volume-I) on “Increasing India’s Electronics Exports and Share in GVCs”. The report, prepared by ICEA, analyses the challenges and outlines key success factors for increasing electronics exports, while benchmarking against competing nations.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to increase exports and India’s share in global supply chains “Local Goes Global”, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology released Volume-I of Vision Document, “Increasing India’s Electronics Exports and Share in GVCs – Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat”. This comes as a part of MeitY’s Vision 1000 Days that sets a target of achieving $1 trillion Digital Economy for Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

The Vision Document (Volume-I) has been prepared by Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) in consultation with the industry. It is a call to action which analyses the challenges and outlines key success factors for increasing electronics exports, while benchmarking against competing nations.

The document focuses on the opportunities and key inputs to increase India’s share in the Global Value Chain and build large-scale manufacturing capabilities to achieve a substantial share in global electronics export. The report by ICEA makes recommendations to increase scale, competitiveness and domestic value addition over the next 1000 days.

Addressing the event and speaking about the transformation of electronics manufacturing space after pandemic, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that India has an unprecedented opportunity to grow electronics manufacturing to USD 300 billion in the next 3-4 years, building on scale, competitiveness, large market and enabling policies.

“Post-Covid world represents coming together of many things/elements including the renewed confidence under visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, policy making, investments, jobs and a strong preference for trust in Global Value Chains. These together present an unprecedented – never before opportunity for India in electronics sector,” said Chandrasekhar.

He further said that the industry needs to focus on expanding product categories which can serve new markets and new types of consumers. “We are in a world where hardware plays less role in innovation and software plays more significant role. In this scenario, India has the ability to use its strength in electronics design, systems design along with electronics manufacturing,” the minister said while releasing the vision document.

Commenting on collaboration with industry in realizing the vision, Chandrasekhar said, “We will approach the industry as a partner and will fully support it in its efforts to increase the overall competitiveness of the economy.” He quoted the PM’s speech “Yahi Samay Hai”, signifying the narrow window of opportunity available in the electronics sector.

The push for the ESDM sector is preceded by India emerging as the second largest manufacturer of mobile handsets in the world in volume terms, producing 30 crore handsets (2020-21) as against 6 crore handsets in 2014-15. Over 200 units are manufacturing cellular mobile phones and parts in the country which is up from only 2 units in 2014. Production of mobile handsets has grown from INR 19,000 crore in 2014-15 to INR 2,20,000 crore in 2020-21. This has given a significant boost to the sector and to the vision of achieving self-reliance under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

MeitY Secretary Ajay Sawhney, briefing the media about the vision document, said that despite the very serious nature of the pandemic and the impact it had across all the industries, India was able to maintain its overall production at $75 billion in 2021 and aims to reach $250 billion in five years, with a CAGR of 27%. “And that is where we need to now revisit and reassess what we are attempting to do, how do we change our course? What do we do differently, to be able to sustain this level of growth,” said Sawhney.

The Vision Document is the first of a two-part series. The second volume will present product-wise strategies and forecasts as part of the campaign to build a US$1 trillion Digital Economy, in pursuit of reaching US$5 trillion GDP.

“We need tactical and strategic steps for each product line to build India’s competitiveness to meet the PM’s vision. Government and industry need to collaborate seamlessly in this effort without wasting a minute. We know the issues and the solutions. It’s time to implement,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, while making his opening remarks at the event.

The document makes recommendations on short-term (1-4 years) and long-term (5-10 years) strategies to increase electronics exports from India, shift of electronics manufacturing ecosystem investments, and expand exports by increasing competitiveness and scale.

The report critically analyses the impact of tariffs on inputs on India’s competitiveness, and makes specific recommendations in view of the goals set by the Prime Minister. The Vision Document also emphasises on the strategies to build Domestic Champions and the need for linking their products with Lead Firms and GVCs.

It seeks to protect Domestic Champions from unfair trade practices, while requesting policy support in the areas of financing and design development. It identifies key electronic products, namely mobile phones, IT hardware, hearables / wearables etc, which provide the highest potential for exports, in view of massive global demand for these products.

The release ceremony was attended by a wide spectrum of people from the industry and industry associations, MeitY, academia amongst others. A presentation on the vision document was given by Dr Harsh Vardhan, Chairman, IKDHWAJ Advisers LLP. Remarks were also given by Hari Om Rai, CMD, Lava Mobiles, and Virat Bhatia, Chairman FICCI National Committee on ICT and Mobile Manufacturing.
