Google Pixel 6a could land in India soon, key specs out

0

Rumours are rife that Google is coming up with its Pixel 6a in India in Q1 2022. According to reports quoting tipster Yogesh Brar, the Pixel 6a will launch here at the end of Q1. The phone is expected to soon appear in the BIS database as well, which again confirms the launch.

Expected price and specs

If the reports are to be believed, the price of Google Pixel 6a in India is expected to be a little higher than the Pixel 4a, which currently retails for Rs 31,999. It is said that Google could sell the new Pixel 6a in India at a starting price of Rs 41,999. The Pixel a series of phones have had consistent pricing through the years since the release of the Pixel 3a.

The upcoming Pixel 6a could be a good deal for around Rs 40,000, especially considering the fact that it’ll have some of the best cameras on a smartphone, and a totally new design. The phone will also get the custom Google developed Tensor chipset, and the latest Android OS, as per the reports.

Only Pixel 4a available in India

If we look at the Pixel offerings in India, the only phone to currently get is the two-year-old Pixel 4a. Google stopped selling its flagships in India after the Pixel 3, and we’ve only been getting the ‘a’ series mid-range affordable Android phones, reports say.

It must be noted that the tech major also skipped the Pixel 5a in India as well, so it should be nice to see the Pixel 6a coming to the country.

Twin blows to offline smartphone retail in 2021: Know how Covid and ecommerce played spoilsport

0

The second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Q2 (Apr-Jun) last year and the growing popularity of online retail dealt twin blows to offline smartphone retail in 2021, revealed a new study. While metros recovered fast from the second pandemic wave, overtaking Q1 (Jan-Mar) sales in Q4 (Oct-Dec), both in value and volume, tier 2 and 3 cities lagged behind, it said.

More smartphone users bought devices in the sub-15K price category, with the 25K category failing to grow. Vivo, followed by Xiaomi, were the top brands by value and volume at MBOs (multi-brand outlets) across India.

These and other insights were released by PredictiVu, a data analytics firm that tracks the offline smartphone market across 50 cities in India, in their annual MBO Smartphone India Overview Report 2021. The annual report tracks offline smartphone retails in the top 50 cities across India from January to December last year.

Smartphones

According to the report, offline smartphone retail volume fell 54% in Q2 as a result of the pandemic-led restrictions, rising 19% and 30% in Q3 and Q4 respectively. However, Q4 2021 remained 28% below Q1 volume. Similarly, offline retail value dipped 57% in Q2, recovering 23% and 35% in Q3 (Jul-Sep) and Q4. But the last quarter of 2021 ended 28% below Q1 in value terms.

Among smartphone brands, Vivo continued to lead offline smartphone retail at multi-brand outlets with 29% share by value and 27% by volume. Oppo took second place with a 21% share by volume. This was followed by a tie for the third position between Samsung and Xiaomi, both at 16% by volume.

Samsung’s share of sales at MBOs continued to erode across quarters, from 22% in Q1 to 10% in Q4.  Apple lost its share by 15% in Q4 compared to Q1 by volume and 21% by value whereas Oppo gained close to 20% during the same period in the 25k+ smartphone category.

“2021 continued to be a tough year for offline smartphone retail in India. As a result of the pandemic and the second wave, more people shopped online, making it difficult for offline retailers to thrive or even survive. Many retailers in the MBO category downed shutters permanently or remained out of business for a long time. While the festival season brought hope in Q3 and Q4, significant recovery across India has remained a challenge. However, Metro cities performed well with sales bouncing back and overtaking pre-second wave numbers. With the Omicron-led restrictions continue to put pressure on an already weak market, the Q1 2022 will show what the real impact has been,” said Kunal Sarkar, Vice President, PredictiVu.

Market share for the north in Q4 increased by 15% as compared with Q1 within the premium range smartphones, whereas the west and the south witnessed a decline for the same period. Major town classes were the major contributor to this change in shares. Although by volume there has not been much change for large town class cities, there has been a 3% increase in market share by value. This can be attributed to choosing more expensive smartphones.

Rajesh Kurup, Member of Strategic Advisory Board, PredictiVu, said, “2021 was expected to be a recovery year for offline smartphone retail with Q1 sales being the highest of all quarters. However, the second wave played spoilsport. An interesting trend we saw across all four quarters was the steady rise in market share of smaller players in the offline smartphone retail market. It shows that with rising prices and shrinking incomes, smartphone users are turning to pocket-friendly smartphones. This is also apparent with the growing popularity of smartphones in the sub 15K category.”

Spotify buys Podsights, Chartable podcast analytics firms: Know more about these acquisitions

0

In order to expand its business, popular music streaming platform Spotify has acquired two major podcast ad tech firms, Podsights and Chartable.

With the acquisition of Podsights, the Swedish company will reportedly be able to help advertisers understand how podcast ads drive actions that matter to their businesses. Podsights is a leading podcast advertising measurement service that helps advertisers better measure and scale their podcast advertising.

“We believe the opportunity for digital audio and podcast remains significant. With these acquisitions, we’re taking a big step in upleveling digital audio measurement and insights to help the entire industry scale to new heights,” the company said.

According to reports, Podsights’ team of around 40 full-time employees will join Spotify and the company says that it has no plans to adjust that team at this time.

On the other hand, Chartable is a podcast analytics platform that enables publishers to know and grow their podcast audiences through promotional attribution and audience insight tools.

Spotify has also revealed financial details related to these acquisitions. It will invest $100 million in the licensing, development and marketing of music and audio content from historically underrepresented creators, its CEO Daniel Ek said recently.

The company also reported its fourth quarter (Q4) results for 2021, taking its paid subscribers to 180 million globally. Monthly active users on the platform grew by 18 per cent (on-year) to reach 406 million.

It must be noted that advertising represented 15 per cent of Spotify’s revenue in the October-December quarter last year.

Interestingly, the development comes at a time when Spotify is facing backlash because of Joe Rogan’s podcast which critics say is spreading misinformation related to COVID-19. It has also led to several artists leaving the platform in protest.
