Food delivery company Zomatohas been ordered with a tax demand by the Joint Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise Thane Commissionerate Maharashtra.
The ₹803.4 crore order alleges non-payment of goods and services tax (GST) on delivery charges for the period between October 29, 2019 and March 31, 2022.
The total amount includes a GST liability of ₹401.7 crore, an equal amount as a penalty and additional interest.
The tax demand order, issued on November 12, 2024 and served to Zomato on December 12, 2024, focuses on GST compliance related to delivery charges.
The breakdown of the total demand is ₹401.7 crore GST Liability, ₹401.7 crore Penalty and yet to be quantified interest.
This case highlights the complexities of GST rules for digital service platforms, especially around delivery charges that is a key revenue component for companies like Zomato.
The company says in a regulatory filing that it will be appealing the tax demand. (Image credit – X)
Zomato has stated its intent to contest the order.
In a regulatory filing, the company said, “We believe that we have a strong case on merits, supported by opinions from our external legal and tax advisors. We will be filing an appeal against this order before the appropriate authority.”
The company has emphasised its commitment to compliance and plans to challenge the order through legal avenues.
The news of the tax demand immediately impacted Zomato’s stock. On December 12, 2024, its shares closed at ₹284.90, a drop of ₹6.90 (2.36%) on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
Analysts are closely watching the situation to evaluate its potential long-term impact on the company’s financial stability.
This case has put a spotlight on the regulatory scrutiny faced by food delivery platforms regarding tax compliance.
Delivery charges, a significant part of these companies’ revenue, often fall into grey areas under GST rules. The outcome of Zomato’s appeal could set an important precedent for similar cases involving other industry players.
The company recently replaced JSW Steel in the BSE Sensex, a move that highlights its growing prominence in the Indian stock market.
However, resolving this GST issue will be critical for maintaining investor confidence and ensuring smooth operations going forward.

The iPhone 17 Pro is rumoured to feature a horizontal camera layout for all three lenses.
It was first pointed out by tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS).
Fan renders shared by tipsters like DCS and Majin Bu suggest a horizontal camera bump.
A leaked iPhone 17 metal frame design aligns with the claim.
Rumours suggest Apple might replace titanium with aluminium for the iPhone 17 Pro.
Looks like we have some exciting updates about the possible camera layout design of the iPhone 17 lineup, especially the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple is working on updated Apple TV and HomePod mini models with its new custom wireless chip.

Ongoing focus on iOS 18 is causing delays in iOS 19 development.

Apple is focused on being self-sufficient while reducing dependency on other companies for components. In a recent Bloomberg report, Mark Gurman revealed that the company is working on updated Apple TV and HomePod mini models to feature Apple’s new custom wireless chip. This means Apple Broadcom chips are currently used for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with its in-house replacements. Both Apple TV and HomePad Mini are set for 2025 launch as per the latest update.
The new chip is internally called Proxima and has been in development for years. Manufactured by TSMC, it marks another step in Apple’s strategy to reduce dependence on third-party suppliers.
As per reports, the rollout will start with the updated home devices and expand to iPhones later in 2025, followed by iPads and Macs in 2026.
This chip replacement plan comes at a time when Apple is already in the middle of transitioning away from Qualcomm modems. Experts believe the two custom chips are designed to complement each other and will create a more seamless plus energy-efficient ecosystem for Apple’s products.
The Proxima chip will support Wi-Fi 6E promising faster speeds and better bandwidth. It will play a significant role in Apple’s smart home strategy in 2025, which includes an AI-powered home hub and a standalone security camera. These categories of products will need faster and more integrated wireless connectivity.
Even though Apple is focusing on self-sufficiency, Broadcom is believed to remain a part of Apple’s plans in other areas. Reports suggest the two companies are developing Apple’s first server chip designed for AI processing. This could play a role in Apple’s future plans for an AI-driven version of Siri, which can launch as early as 2026.
iOS 19 Development Faces Delays Due to iOS 18 Gradual Rollout

Meanwhile, Gurman also touched a completely different nerve in a post on X (formerly Twitter) regarding Apple’s iOS release calendar. Turns out, Apple’s ongoing focus on iOS 18 is reportedly causing delays in iOS 19 development.
Gurman notes that the gradual rollout of iOS 18 features, from its initial launch to the packed 18.1 and 18.2 updates, has tied up engineering resources.
“Engineers are stuck working on iOS 18 projects when they’d usually already be on to the following OS,” he wrote on X.
I continue to hear that the gradual rollout of features across iOS 18 to iOS 18.4 is leading to delays of some features scheduled for iOS 19. That will lead to a long term rollout of features next cycle as well. Engineers are stuck working on iOS 18 projects when they’d usually…
— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) December 12, 2024

Delhi Police has arrested five accused in the Delhi Metro Cable Theft case of December 5.
Delhi Metroservices faced disruptions on the morning of December 5 due to the theft of signalling cables, an essential component for tracking train movements.
According to The Indian Express report, the gang responsible for the theft scouted isolated and dimly lit areas near Delhi Metro pillars for months.
Their aim was to steal copper cables prized for their high scrap value. Using ropes and hooks, the thieves climbed the pillars to reach the elevated Blue Line tracks and cut the cables.
Explaining the gang’s methods, Joint CP (Transport Range) Vijay Singh said, “Using ropes and hooks, Islam, Nadeem, Siddhu, and Teli scaled the Metro pillars to reach the elevated tracks and cut the high-value copper cables, which carry no electricity. Shahrukh and Ramzan parked vehicles away from the scene to avoid suspicion.”
The investigation revealed that Rashid and Faisal transported the stolen cables to a godown in Mustafabad, where some were weighed and prepared for sale. The rest were moved to a rented godown in Brajpuri before being transported to another location for disposal.
The theft came to light around 5 am when the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) received an alert from the signalling department about a track circuit issue. Upon investigation, officials discovered that 140 meters of signalling cable were missing between the Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations.
Five individuals have been arrested: Rashid Malik (26), Shahrukh Malik (29), Ramzan (32), Junaid aka Bhura (32), and another gang member. Seven others, including Faisal, Masoom, Nadeem, Siddhu, Teli, Sarfaraj, and Islam, are still on the run.
DMRC’s Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal commended the Delhi Police for their swift response. “This is a positive step in avoiding disruption of Metro services for the public and we hope will be a deterrent for others in the future,” he stated.
The incident highlights the need for heightened security measures to prevent such disruptions in the future.
