Meta’s Threads app has now hit a major milestone of 300 million users with over 100 million people using the platform every day. Mark Zuckerberg shared the news in a post on Threads, saying, “Threads strong momentum continues.”

Zuckerberg has previously said that Threads has a “good chance” of becoming Meta’s next billion-user app. “I thought for a long time, there should be a billion-person public conversations app that is a bit more positive and I think that if we keep at this for a few more years, then I think we have a good chance of achieving our vision there,” Zuckerberg said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call.

While it’s still a long way from that goal, the app’s growth is clearly speeding up. Threads reached 100 million users last fall and hit 275 million in early November, according to head of Instagram and supporter of Threads, Adam Mosseri.

Meanwhile, Apple revealed that Threads was the second-most downloaded app in 2024 with shopping app Temu taking the top spot.

Apple’s App Store Awards shows Meta’s Threads at second position in the list of most-download Apps of 2024.

The next few weeks could bring some big changes as Meta looks to build on this momentum. According to a recent report by The Information, Meta plans to test ads on Threads starting in early 2025.

Threads isn’t the only platform vying to be the new “public square” as some users move away from X (formerly Twitter). Another app, Bluesky has also grown significantly nearly doubling its user base in November to reach just over 25 million users. However, Bluesky hasn’t revealed how many of its users are active daily.

While Threads is much larger, it seems Meta is paying attention to Bluesky’s features. Recently, Threads rolled out updates inspired by Bluesky’s custom feeds and starter packs, which let users personalize their content experience.

With its rapid growth and upcoming features, Threads is shaping up to be a strong competitor in the social media space.

Snapchat is changing how creators can earn money on its platform. The company has just announced a new ad revenue-sharing program for creators who post videos on Spotlight. Here’s everything you need to know about the change.

Spotlight is Snapchat’s TikTok-like feature and creators can now make money from videos that are one minute or longer by earning a share of ad revenue tied to their content.

This update simplifies Snapchat’s monetisation tools across both Spotlight and Stories, where ad revenue sharing first launched. However, this also means Snap will end its Spotlight Reward Program, the creator fund that paid influencers directly.

The Reward Program will officially shut down on January 30, 2025, and the new revenue-sharing model will take effect from February 1, 2025.

Snapchat has set specific requirements for creators to earn money through Spotlight videos or Stories.

To qualify, creators must:

  • Have at least 50,000 followers.
  • Post at least 25 times per month to either Saved Stories or Spotlight.
  • Post on at least 10 of the last 28 days to Spotlight or Public Stories.

Also, creators need to achieve one of the following in the last 28 days:

  • 10 million Snap views
  • 1 million Spotlight views
  • 12,000 hours of view time

These new requirements might seem tougher than before to many creators. To compare, Snapchat’s previous Stories requirements only asked for 10 Story posts per month.

Moreover, Spotlight creators who could previously earn money with just 1,000 followers and 10,000 unique views will now need to meet these higher thresholds. The change also pushes creators to focus on longer videos, as only content over one minute will be eligible for ad revenue.

Snap’s announcement comes at a time when TikTok faces a potential ban in the United States. The ByteDance-owned app has until January 19, 2025, to sell its US operations or risk being banned if the Supreme Court doesn’t intervene. If TikTok does disappear, Snap could be one of the platforms creators turn to.

Snap reports that Spotlight viewership is “up 25% year-over-year,” and sees a growing opportunity for creators to make money from public content. The company also revealed that the number of people posting publicly on Snap has “more than tripled” over the past year.

FAQs

Q1. What is the new ad revenue-sharing program on Snapchat?

Answer. Snapchat has announced a new ad revenue-sharing program for creators who post videos on Spotlight that are one minute or longer, replacing the Spotlight Reward Program, which will end on January 30, 2025.

Q2. What are the requirements for creators to utilise new Snapchat revenue plan?

Answer. To qualify, creators must have at least 50,000 followers, post at least 25 times per month to either Saved Stories or Spotlight, and post on at least 10 of the last 28 days to Spotlight or Public Stories. Additionally, they need to achieve one of the following in the last 28 days: 10 million Snap views, 1 million Spotlight views or 12,000 hours of view time.

Q3. Why is Snapchat updating its monetisation tools and requirements?

Answer. The update simplifies Snap’s monetisation tools across both Spotlight and Stories and encourages longer videos, setting higher thresholds for earning. It also comes as TikTok faces a potential ban in the US, possibly driving more creators to Snap.

Users can also add creative prompts to customize their videos. For example:

  • “Low-angle tracking shot that glides through the middle of a scene.”
  • “Close-up shot on the face of a scientist looking through her microscope.”
  • Add “18mm lens” for a wide-angle shot.
  • Use “shallow depth of field” to blur the background and focus on a subject.

Google also notes that Veo 2 “hallucinates less frequently” and includes an invisible SynthID watermark to ensure content transparency.

Veo 2 is being rolled out to VideoFX in Google Labs and access is expanding, although there’s still a waitlist. Google confirmed it will be integrated into YouTube Shorts and other products next year.

Google blog says, “We have been intentionally measured in growing Veo’s availability, so we can help identify, understand and improve the model’s quality and safety while slowly rolling it out via VideoFX, YouTube and Vertex AI.”

Veo 2 Demos

The Video Prompt (As shared with the above video on Google Deepmin) – “The camera floats gently through rows of pastel-painted wooden beehives, buzzing honeybees gliding in and out of frame. The motion settles on the refined farmer standing at the center, his pristine white beekeeping suit gleaming in the golden afternoon light. He lifts a jar of honey, tilting it slightly to catch the light. Behind him, tall sunflowers sway rhythmically in the breeze, their petals glowing in the warm sunlight. The camera tilts upward to reveal a retro farmhouse with mint-green shutters, its walls dappled with shadows from swaying trees. Shot with a 35mm lens on Kodak Portra 400 film, the golden light creates rich textures on the farmer’s gloves, marmalade jar, and weathered wood of the beehives.”

The Video Prompt (As shared with the above video on Google Deepmin) – “This medium shot, with a shallow depth of field, portrays a cute cartoon girl with wavy brown hair, sitting upright in a 1980s kitchen. Her hair is medium length and wavy. She has a small, slightly upturned nose, and small, rounded ears. She is very animated and excited as she talks to the camera.”

The Video Prompt (As shared with the above video on Google Deepmin) – “A low-angle shot captures a flock of pink flamingos gracefully wading in a lush, tranquil lagoon. The vibrant pink of their plumage contrasts beautifully with the verdant green of the surrounding vegetation and the crystal-clear turquoise water. Sunlight glints off the water’s surface, creating shimmering reflections that dance on the flamingos’ feathers. The birds’ elegant, curved necks are submerged as they walk through the shallow water, their movements creating gentle ripples that spread across the lagoon. The composition emphasizes the serenity and natural beauty of the scene, highlighting the delicate balance of the ecosystem and the inherent grace of these magnificent birds. The soft, diffused light of early morning bathes the entire scene in a warm, ethereal glow.”

The Video Prompt (As shared with the above video on Google Deepmin) – “A cinematic shot captures a fluffy Cockapoo, perched atop a vibrant pink flamingo float, in a sun-drenched Los Angeles swimming pool. The crystal-clear water sparkles under the bright California sun, reflecting the playful scene. The Cockapoo’s fur, a soft blend of white and apricot, is highlighted by the golden sunlight, its floppy ears gently swaying in the breeze. Its happy expression and wagging tail convey pure joy and summer bliss. The vibrant pink flamingo adds a whimsical touch, creating a picture-perfect image of carefree fun in the LA sunshine.”

Imagen 3 Update

Google has also introduced an upgraded Imagen 3 model, which delivers brighter images with better composition, richer textures and more accurate rendering of diverse art styles.

The Google announcement post said, “It can now render more diverse art styles with greater accuracy — from photorealism to impressionism, from abstract to anime.”

The updated model is now rolling out globally to ImageFX image tool from Google Labs, to more than 100 countries.

Google Labs is launching a new experiment called Whisk. Whisk allows users to prompt with images and is designed to demonstrate Imagen 3’s improvements alongside Gemini’s visual understanding and description capabilities.

Google describes it: “Under the hood, Whisk combines our latest Imagen 3 model with Gemini’s visual understanding and description capabilities. The Gemini model automatically writes a detailed caption of your images, and it then feeds those descriptions into Imagen 3. This process allows you to easily remix your subjects, scenes and styles in fun, new ways.”

OpenAI has made its ChatGPT Search feature available to all users for free. Launched in October, ChatGPT Search has been until now limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers only.

Here’s a quick recap of OpenAI’s recent announcement on X (formerly Twitter).

Search will be available at chatgpt.com and the desktop/mobile apps.

According to the recent OpenAI update, all ChatGPT Plus and Team users along with SearchGPT waitlist users will have access immediately. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, all the free users can expect to get full access to the search feature in the coming months.

What is ChatGPT Search?

ChatGPT Search allows users to get real-time information from the internet. It is different from the standard ChatGPT experience, which relies on data updated only until June 2024 through the GPT-4o model.

The Search feature can find and share up-to-date details directly from the internet.

ChatGPT Search allows users to receive fast, up-to-date answers along with links to relevant web sources, a feature traditionally handled by search engines.

To be able to use it, users have to simply open ChatGPT on the web or app and tap the search button. Users can then enter their queries to get detailed responses based on multiple sources. These sources are linked within the answer and the results may include images or even videos.

OpenAI describes it in a blog post saying, “ChatGPT can now search the web in a much better way than before. You can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would have previously needed to go to a search engine for. This blends the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes and more.”

The iOS and Android versions of ChatGPT now integrate with the respective map apps on these devices (Apple Maps and Google Maps).

ChatGPT automatically decides when to search the web based on your query. Alternatively, you can manually initiate a web search by tapping the web search icon.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has been busy adding new features to ChatGPT. The platform recently introduced Video Support in Advanced Voice Mode for users to have natural video conversations with ChatGPT.

This feature allows the AI to analyse and answer questions about video content.

Moreover, Siri Integration now allows iPhone and iPad users running iOS 18.2 or later to interact with ChatGPT directly through Siri.

FAQs

Q1. What is ChatGPT Search and how does it differ from the standard ChatGPT experience?

Q2. Who will have immediate access to ChatGPT Search and when will others get access?

Answer. ChatGPT Plus, Team users and SearchGPT waitlist users will have immediate access. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the next few weeks and all free users in the coming months.

Q3. How does ChatGPT Search provide answers to user queries?

Answer. ChatGPT Search provides detailed responses based on multiple sources directly from the internet with links within the answers and may include images or videos.
