The viral post.A Delhi-based woman recently recounted a harrowing experience during an Ola cab ride accusing the company of serious safety lapses. The claims were made in a LinkedIn post that has since gone viral.

Shazia A is a senior manager at Genpact and has come forward to share her ordeal from December 20 when her cab ride to Gurugram took a terrifying turn. According to Shazia, the driver stopped the cab for strangers and the SOS button on the Ola app failed to work.

Child safety groups Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action have jointly published a report uncovering some troubling issues with Apple’s App Store. According to the key findings, numerous apps deemed suitable for children as young as four years old contain inappropriate content.

The investigation was conducted over 24 hours and identified more than 200 apps with “concerning content or features” despite their age ratings. These apps include stranger chat and AI girlfriend apps, games with sexual or violent themes and AI-powered appearance rating apps.

The report focused on apps rated 4+, 9+, and 12+, particularly in categories labelled as “risky.” These included chat apps (like AI and stranger chat platforms), beauty and body image apps, diet and weight loss tools, unfiltered internet access apps and gaming.

The investigation revealed the following key findings –

  • 24 sexual games and 9 stranger chat apps were marked safe for young children.
  • 40 apps providing unfiltered internet access were rated 4+ or 9+.
  • 75 beauty, body image, and weight loss apps carried ratings as low as 4+.
  • 28 shooter and crime games were also deemed appropriate for kids.

According to Heat Initiative, these problematic apps have collectively been downloaded over 550 million times.

The research examined about 800 apps revealing stark differences between categories. Stranger chat apps and games were less likely to have inappropriate age ratings with many marked 17+. In contrast, nearly all apps in the weight loss and unfiltered internet access categories were rated 4+, raising significant safety concerns.

The report urges Apple to strengthen its child safety measures, specifically by using third-party reviewers to verify age ratings before apps go live. Apple can also make the age rating process transparent to consumers.

The report further underscores the importance of ensuring that children are protected from harmful content and features on digital platforms.

At the 55th GST Council meeting on December 21 in Jaisalmer Rajasthan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified the tax rates for popcorn. The decision left many amused and some exasperated prompting a flood of online memes.

The council confirmed that normal popcorn will attract 5% GST, while pre-packaged and ready-to-eat snacks face 12% GST.

However, caramelised popcorn will be taxed at a hefty 18% GST.

According to the government, the reason is purely based on the preparation method, which makes all the difference.

The Finance Minister explained that Pre-packaged ready-to-eat popcorn is mixed with salts and spices, categorised under ‘namkeen’ category and attracting the 5% and 12% taxation.

On the other hand, caramelised popcorns are mixed with sugar, which changes the product category and thus changes the GST rate on them. As per the GST council, it becomes a sugar confectionary after caramelisation, which calls for 18% GST.

The decision sparked a meme storm. One netizen joked, “India here acting like their whole economy depends on salted or caramelized popcorn.” Another quipped, “Pani puri khatta 5% GST. Pani puri meetha 18% GST.” A playful dig read, “Chennai sambar is namkeen, hence 5% GST. Bengaluru sambar is sweet, hence 18% GST.”

One user humorously remarked, “Hope the FM doesn’t tax memes in the future. Or this account will be gone for good.”

Startup Founder’s Viral Post Urges Innovators to Leave India

image
The new deleted Reddit post by u/anonymous_batm_an.

While popcorn taxes grabbed headlines and captured the imagination of meme spreaders, a viral Reddit post by a startup founder painted a grim picture of India’s environment for innovators sparking widespread discussion.

The now-deleted post on the r/India subreddit, titled “Leave India! It’s high time! And I am telling this as someone who runs a well-funded business!” urged high-salaried individuals and innovators to consider emigrating.

The author with username u/anonymous_batm_an detailed his frustrations with India’s business climate including “stupid regulations,” corruption and high taxes. The entrepreneur, who studied at a top Indian engineering institute and earned a postgraduate degree in the US, returned to India in 2018 to launch a company. Despite securing substantial funding and employing nearly 30 people with an average salary of ₹15 lakh, he shared stories of bureaucratic hurdles and social challenges.

He recounted being accused and asked for bribes despite helping police solve a fraud case. The founder also criticised poor public services, frequent “regional hate” and a culture where “social status is tied to wealth and appearance.”

The post included a stark warning of an impending “terrible economic collapse” and further depreciation of the rupee. He sarcastically pointed to the popcorn tax as a symbol of desperation:

The post said, “In a nutshell…leave the country where they will even tax your popcorn because they are out of ideas to make it a 5 trillion dollar economy!” The entrepreneur suggested the UAE or Thailand as better destinations for innovators.

The post garnered over 300 comments before its removal. Some users sympathised, citing issues like poor roads, healthcare and corruption. A commenter living in Australia echoed the sentiment, saying, “Taxes are high, but the returns are poor.” Another user joked that they would join the entrepreneur in leaving India if he decided to shut down his business.

FAQS

Q1. What are the new GST rates for different types of popcorn?

Answer. Normal popcorn will attract 5% GST, pre-packaged and ready-to-eat snacks will face 12% GST, and caramelised popcorn will be taxed at 18% GST.

Q2. Why is caramelised popcorn taxed at a higher rate?

Answer. Caramelised popcorn is taxed at 18% GST because it is mixed with sugar, changing its product category to sugar confectionary, which calls for a higher GST rate.

Q3. What was the reaction to the GST Council’s decision on popcorn tax?

Answer. The decision sparked a meme storm online with netizens humorously critiquing the government’s tax policies and their impact on everyday items.

Apple is working on a smart home doorbell with advanced facial recognition and aims to compete with brands like Ring. Plans revealed in the latest Mark Gurman newsletter on Bloomberg, this new device would integrate wirelessly with smart home locks and offer innovative features for seamless access control.

Report reveals that one of the standout feature of this doorbell would be its ability to unlock your home automatically by scanning your face. Gurman explains, “The idea is that the doorbell could automatically unlock the door for a home’s residents by scanning their face — just like Face ID lets them into their iPhone.”

Apple already supports several third-party HomeKit-compatible locks available through its online store, but a doorbell with built-in facial recognition marks a new direction. Gurman suggests that the doorbell could potentially integrate with various third-party HomeKit locks, although it’s not confirmed.

Apple might even partner with a specific lock manufacturer to offer an all-in-one package.

However, the project is still in its early stages. Gurman notes that the doorbell won’t hit the market “before the end of next year at the soonest.”

The device is expected to use Apple’s new in-house networking chip, which enhances connectivity across smart home devices.

This doorbell is part of Apple’s broader plans to expand its presence in the smart home market. The company is rumoured to soon launch a new smart home control device that attaches to walls and may feature a speaker base akin to the Google Nest Hub.

Moreover, refreshed versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini are expected as part of the same efforts.

One interesting thing highlighted in the newsletter is that Apple may choose to release the doorbell under its own brand or through a close partner such as Belkin. Gurman explains the company Apple might go with own brand because considering all the possible risks of potential break-ins and robberies association.

FAQs

Q1. What is the standout feature of Apple’s upcoming smart doorbell?

Q2. When is Apple’s smart doorbell expected to be released?

Answer. Apple’s smart doorbell is still in its early stages and won’t hit the market before the end of next year at the soonest.

Q3. How will Apple’s new smart doorbell integrate with existing home devices?

Answer. The smart doorbell will integrate wirelessly with smart home locks and use Apple’s new in-house networking chip to enhance connectivity across smart home devices.

Gurman: Apple Working On Health Features For AirPod Pro 3, No Apple’s AirPort Router On Cards

0

Highlights

  • Apple will add health features like a heart-rate monitor and temperature sensor for the AirPods Pro 3.
  • Apple is exploring adding cameras to AirPods but this technology is still a few years away.
  • A new version of its AirPort wireless router is not coming as of now.
  • The advanced Proxima wireless chip in future Apple devices could be the wireless access point.

Apple to potentially add heart-rate monitor, a temperature sensor and new sensors to track “a slew of physiological measures” in AirPods Pro 3. (Image credit – Apple)

It has been well-reported in the past that Apple is working on several health feature advancements for its range of products including the smartwatch and AirPods. In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s trusted Apple reporter Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple’s health-focused features for AirPods might debut in the AirPods Pro 3.

According to Gurman, Apple is developing health features like a heart-rate monitor, a temperature sensor and new sensors to track “a slew of physiological measures.” He reveals that Apple is mainly concentrated on the heart rate sensor for now.

The report also highlights that Apple found that heart-rate tracking via the Apple Watch is more accurate during internal testing. However, Gurman is confident that the AirPods are also not too far away.

While there’s no detailed timeline or specifics on the other features, he says these advancements will roll out “over the coming years” and could appear in the AirPods Pro 3.

Apple is also exploring adding cameras to AirPods. Gurman writes, “In fact, it’s now seen as a priority for the teams within Apple’s AI and AirPods hardware development groups. That said, I wouldn’t expect the technology to hit the market for a couple more years — assuming it doesn’t get cancelled again.”

This suggests that while Apple’s AI and hardware teams prioritise integrating cameras into AirPods, the technology is still a few years away from becoming a reality.

Apple has already rolled out new hearing health features with a firmware update for the AirPods Pro 2. It allows them to function as FDA-certified hearing aids.

Apple’s AirPort Router Is Not On Cards For Now

image
(Image credit – By Raimond Spekking)

In the same newsletter, Gurman also touched upon the Apple AirPort Router. Gurman shared disappointing news about Apple’s AirPort wireless router, which hasn’t been updated since 2013.

“Apple is not working on a new version of its AirPort wireless router,” Gurman writes.

However, there’s still a glimmer of hope. Gurman notes that Apple’s new Proxima wireless chip, designed for devices like the Apple TV, HomePod, iPhone 17 and future Mac models, is advanced enough to potentially function as a wireless access point.

He explains, “The Proxima chip is so sophisticated that it could theoretically turn a home device like an Apple TV box or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has released products like this before, including a mixed Wi-Fi router and smart speaker.

However, Gurman also notes that even if Apple enables the wireless functionality for these upcoming Apple TVs and HomePods, these wouldn’t be the main highlight of the product.

Galaxy S25 Slim – What to Expect? (Leaked)

According to a recent leak by user @Gadgetsdata on X (formerly Twitter), the Galaxy S25 Slim will stand out with its thinner-than-expected design and powerful features.

Some of the leaked features are as follows –

  • Display: It’s rumoured to have a 66-inch screen, the same size as the S25+.
  • Chipset: Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, ensuring top-tier performance.
  • Battery: Estimated to range between 4,700 mAh and 5,000 mAh, impressive for such a slim device.

Cameras: The back will boast:

  • A 200 MP main camera with Samsung’s ISOCELL HP5 sensor.
  • A 50 MP ultrawide camera.
  • A 50 MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom using the ISOCELL JN5 sensor.

How Slim Will Galaxy S25 Slim Be?

There have been several reports on the rumoured thickness of the 25 Slim variant.

According to a recent post by trusted leaker Ice Universe on Weibo, the model could be under 7 mm, possibly in the 6.x mm range.

This would make it a serious contender in the slim smartphone market, even against Apple’s iPhone 17 Air, which is rumoured to be 5-6 mm thick but sacrifices features like multiple cameras to achieve its design.

This means the base variants will be on par with the high-end Ultra model. Storage is also expected to double with 256GB as the new starting option replacing the previous 128GB base.

What Users Should Do?

If you’re still using one of these devices, you’ll need to take steps to avoid losing access to WhatsApp. The first priority is to back up your chats so you can transfer them to a newer phone.
