Google announced the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro Series at its Made by Google event on August 13, 2024.
The series includes 4 devices – Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the second-generation Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
This Made by Google event has happened much earlier than the past years defying its usual time frame in October. The event was organised at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA.
The latest Pixel phones appear to have received an exciting upgrade. They have relatively fresh design tweaks and the new Google Tensor G4 processor. Let’s explore the cool features the Pixel 9 series offers.
The Pixel 9 sports a 6.3-inch Actua OLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,424 pixels, a pixel density of 422ppi, and a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits.
The refresh rate varies between 60Hz and 120Hz, and the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Under the hood, the Pixel 9 is powered by the Tensor G4 SoC, paired with a Titan M2 security coprocessor.
The phone’s camera system includes a dual rear setup, with a 50-megapixel Octa PD wide-angle camera featuring a 1/1.31-inch sensor and up to 8x Super Res Zoom.
There’s also a 48-megapixel Quad PD ultra wide-angle camera with a 1/2.55-inch sensor. For selfies, it offers a 10.5-megapixel dual PD front camera with autofocus.
The camera comes loaded with AI features like Magic Eraser, Best Take, Photo Unblur, and Night Sight, and can shoot 4K videos at 24/30/60 frames per second.
The phone is equipped with a 4,700mAh battery that supports 45W wired fast charging (charger sold separately) and Qi-certified wireless charging.
The wired charging can power up the battery from zero to 55% in about 30 minutes, and the phone is said to last more than 24 hours on a single charge.
Pixel 9 features dual SIM (nano + eSIM) support, operates on Android 14 and comes with a promise of seven years of OS updates, security patches, and Pixel Drops.
The Pixel 9 has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, along with an in-display fingerprint sensor and face unlock.
Connectivity options are extensive, including Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, Google Cast, GPS, Dual Band GNSS, BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC, and a USB Type-C port.
The Pixel 9 measures 152.8 x 72.0 x 8.5mm and weighs 198 grams.
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL share the same SIM configuration, software, and chipset as the Pixel 9.
The Pixel 9 Pro is equipped with a 6.3-inch Super Actua (LTPO) OLED display, offering a resolution of 1,280 x 2,856 pixels, 495ppi pixel density, and a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.
It also features a variable refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
The larger Pixel 9 Pro XL comes with a 6.8-inch Super Actua (LTPO) OLED display, boasting a resolution of 1,344 x 2,992 pixels, 486ppi pixel density, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.
Both models are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
On the back, both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL feature a triple camera setup, including a 50-megapixel Octa PD wide camera, a 48-megapixel Quad PD ultra-wide camera, and a 48-megapixel Quad PD telephoto camera with up to 30x Super Res Zoom and 5x optical zoom.
For selfies and video calls, these models come with a 42-megapixel Dual PD front camera with autofocus.
Both models carry an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, similar to the Pixel 9, and offer the same connectivity options and sensors.
However, the Pro models also include a temperature sensor and an Ultra-Wideband chip.
The Pixel 9 Pro is powered by a 4,700mAh battery, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a slightly larger 5,060mAh battery.
Both devices support 45W wired fast charging and wireless charging via Qi chargers.
In terms of dimensions, the Pixel 9 Pro measures 152.8 x 72.0 x 8.5mm and weighs 199 grams. The Pixel 9 Pro XL measures 162.8 x 76.6 x 8.5mm and weighs 221 grams.
The newly launched Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a dual-SIM (Nano + eSIM) device that runs Android 14 out-of-the-box, with a promise of seven years of Android OS, security updates, and Pixel Drops.
It’s powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chipset and the Titan M2 security coprocessor, paired with 16GB of RAM.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features an 8-inch LTPO OLED Super Actua Flex inner display with a resolution of 2,076 x 2,152 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits.
On the outside, it has a 6.3-inch OLED Actua display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,424 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and the same peak brightness as the inner screen.
For photography, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is equipped with a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/1.7 aperture, a 10.5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with autofocus and an f/2.2 aperture, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, 20x Super Res Zoom, and an f/3.1 aperture.
Both the wide and telephoto cameras feature optical and electronic image stabilization.
The cover display houses a 10-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture, and there’s another 10-megapixel camera with the same aperture on the inner screen.
Connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, GPS, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and a USB 3.2 Type-C port.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes with 256GB of internal storage in India, while customers in the US and other regions have the option to choose a 512GB variant.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold packs a 4,650mAh battery which can be charged using a PPS charger (45W), as well as Qi wireless chargers.
Google has notably departed from the curved rounded aesthetic that always defined the Pixel devices.
With Pixel 9, Google adopted a fresh, sharper and more angular design language.
You still, however, get the signature styling and familiar elements as the new series retains the soul from previous generation devices.
The edges of all four Pixel 9 devices are flatter compared to the previous phones, inviting comparison with the iPhone design.
Google has also introduced a uniform bezel around all the sides of the screen to complement the flat displays.
The same size bezel on all sides creates a more symmetrical and clean look.
The iconic Google Pixel camera bar has also been transformed to make it more augmented in its way.
In the new Pixel 9 devices, the camera bar balloons a little towards the outer side in a rounded shape frame.
This looks somewhat similar to the original Pixel Fold’s floating camera bars, though the Pixel 9 series design is definitely more prominent.
The Pixel 9 Series is introducing some of the most vibrant colours we have seen in smartphones in recent times.
It indicates how Google aims to cater to almost every category of customers, offering a line-up that has something for everyone.
Here are all the available colour variants for each Pixel 9 Series device –
| Models | Colours Available |
| Pixel 9 | Obsidian, Porcelain, Wintergreen, and Peony |
| The Pixel 9 Pro | Obsidian, Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose Quartz |
| The Pixel 9 Pro XL | Obsidian, Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose Quartz |
| Pixel 9 Pro Fold | Obsidian and Porcelain |
Pixel devices have been known for their great camera systems. However, with AI coming into the picture, camera capabilities have been taken to the next unimaginable levels.
In the Made By Google event, a team of Google speakers demonstrated some of the most unique camera features that are now integrated into all Pixel 9 Series smartphones.
Here are some of the cool features you will be able to play with if you get your hands on these latest devices –
Add Me – Add Me feature allows users to take dual-exposure images. It then combines the images into one to ensure everyone is in one single image.
It uses on-screen hints and post-processing to ensure that additional subjects are added to the photos in a correct frame making the end output clean.
Magic Editor – It now gives hints for reframing and cropping suggestions to ensure your photos are perfectly proportioned and positioned. Users can even use text prompts to alter the photos.
This will help users in creating unique looks or adding elements to create the perfect image.
Autoframe – At the time you’re editing a photo, you’ll see the option to select Autoframe. Tap on that and this new feature will generate four images with different framing.
Zoom Enhance – The Pixel 9 Pro models feature an upgraded Super Res Zoom, allowing for clearer and more detailed zoomed-in shots.
This enhancement leverages AI to reduce noise and maintain image quality even at higher zoom levels.
Video Boost – Pixel devices will have a massive 8K video recording capability at up to 30fps.
Google has confirmed that Video Boost is up to 2x faster than the Pixel 8 Pro. However, this year too this feature is limited to the Pro devices only.
Better Panoramas – Google has completely overhauled its panorama feature, enhancing its ability to deliver detailed, high-quality images even in low-light conditions.
This update makes it easier than ever to capture sweeping landscapes and wide group shots with stunning clarity.
The Pixel 9 series is designed and developed to run Google’s cutting-edge AI models.
Google claims that Gemini Nano with multi-modality is the most advanced on-device AI model.
It lets your phone understand all forms of communication including text, images, audio, and speech.
