Reports say OpenAI’s supposedly new search product would pit the company against Google’s very long dominance in leveraging the power of its ChatGPT language model.
As per Reuters, the service will offer contextual answers from users’ search queries, collating and synthesizing information from many web sources, including news articles, blog posts, and Wikipedia entries, for instance.
The search engine is also expected to include images when relevant to the user’s question.
Very little detail has been provided, but it’s believed that OpenAI’s search tool will at least be partly powered by Microsoft’s Bing search engine, adding further to the rivalry with Alphabet’s Google and other major players like Perplexity.

The domain search.chatgpt.com has seen some activity as of late which has fueled more speculation about OpenAI’s plans of a search functionality integrated with its popular ChatGPT language model.
Search capabilities are currently available to paying subscribers of ChatGPT, though the new product is expected to provide a much fuller and more comfortable search experience.
Still, that doesn’t mean OpenAI doesn’t have some hurdles to overcome in launching into the search engine market.
Critics have pummeled ChatGPT for outputting old or incorrect information when tasked with retrieving web content.
Overcoming this and being able to deliver accurate, up-to-date search results will be the keys to OpenAI’s success in this highly competitive market.
Meanwhile, Google has been actively bolstering its AI capabilities, rapidly improving its Gemini AI models, chatbot, and the Search Generative Experience (SGE) currently being tested with “Labs” users.
The tech giant’s vast experience and resources in the search domain position it as a formidable competitor, raising the stakes for OpenAI’s ambitious endeavour.
The ChatGPT Search Engine by OpenAI is designed to offer contextual, synthesized answers from diverse web sources like news articles and Wikipedia, providing a rich search experience.
OpenAI is expected to leverage Microsoft Bing’s technology to power its ChatGPT Search Engine, aiming to provide a robust alternative to Google’s search offerings.
OpenAI needs to ensure its search engine delivers accurate and current information, overcoming previous criticisms about outdated or incorrect data outputs.
Google has been enhancing its AI models and search capabilities, which could pose a significant challenge to OpenAI’s new search product given Google’s long-standing dominance and resources.
Unlike traditional search engines, OpenAI’s product aims to deliver more personalized and contextually relevant search results by utilizing advanced language models and integration with Bing.
