Apple is reportedly making strides into a brand new wearable category – smart rings. Insiders and leakers have hinted that the debut of an “Apple Ring” may be just around the corner, signaling Apple’s entry into a new domain of personal technology.
“As Apple has been steadily releasing smart ring-related patents for years, it seems that pre-development for commercialization is imminent,” an industry official said.
As per a report by the ETimes, this isn’t something that Apple is pulling out of the blue.
Like the Apple Car, the concept of a smart ring has been flirted with for years, with the Cupertino giant securing patents as early as 2015 for a ring with a touchscreen interface.
This piece of wearable tech is speculated to integrate seamlessly with the Apple ecosystem, controlling devices like the Mac, Apple TV, and iPad.
Furthermore, with Apple’s keen interest in contactless payments, the ring could very well become a part of the Apple Pay ecosystem.
Apple’s potential foray into smart rings comes when the market is expanding beyond fitness trackers.
Brands like Quontic and McLear are exploring smart rings capable of facilitating contactless payments, a niche Apple is uniquely positioned to dominate given its success with Apple Fitness+ and Apple Pay.
The competition is heating up with Samsung’s announcement of its smart ring launch, which is coming out in a few months, alongside emerging players like RingConn, Ultrahuman, and Amovan, each bringing new functionalities to the table.
Some of the recent patents suggest that the Apple Ring will have NFC capabilities and potential integration as a controller for Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
The absence of a physical controller for the Vision Pro headset might allow the Apple Ring could fill the gap, offering a sleek, unified experience across Apple’s suite of products.
Apple’s approach to product development has always been one of careful consideration and timing.
Much like the strategy that led to the Apple Watch’s success, Apple is waiting for the smart ring market to mature before introducing a product that could redefine the category.
While the report from the Electronic Times comes without a solid track record for predictions, the consistency of patent filings over the years suggests that Apple’s interest in smart rings is more than just speculative.

The Apple Ring is rumoured to be Apple’s next venture into wearable technology, featuring integration with the Apple ecosystem and control over devices such as Mac, Apple TV, and iPad.
It’s expected to bring new functionalities, including contactless payments and NFC capabilities.
While there’s no official launch date yet, insider reports and patent filings suggest that Apple is making significant progress towards introducing the Apple Ring. The market’s readiness and Apple’s history of product development indicate a launch could be on the horizon.
According to patents, the Apple Ring is expected to seamlessly integrate with the Apple ecosystem, offering control functionalities for other Apple devices and potentially serving as a controller for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
Speculations based on patent filings suggest the Apple Ring will include a touchscreen interface, NFC for contactless payments, and the ability to control Apple devices. This positions it as a versatile addition to Apple’s wearable line-up.
Given Apple’s emphasis on expanding its Apple Pay ecosystem, the Apple Ring is likely to include features supporting contactless payments, making transactions more convenient and secure for users.
