Apple may not update its Mac Pro lineup for the foreseeable future, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Despite Apple’s steady progress in completing its transition to Apple Silicon across the entire Mac portfolio, the Mac Pro appears to be the outlier with no new model currently in development.
Gurman’s sources say Apple has “no immediate roadmap” for the next Mac Pro. This indicates that the version launched in June 2023 with the M2 Ultra chip will remain the company’s top-tier desktop for a while.
“From what I’ve heard inside the company, Apple has largely written off the Mac Pro,” Gurman writes. “The sentiment internally is that the Mac Studio now represents both the present and future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy.”
This signals a shift from Apple’s earlier expectations of more frequent updates to the Mac Pro after moving away from Intel processors.
According to the report, several key factors are driving Apple’s decision.
First of all, the Mac Pro targets a very specific professional segment, many of whom have instead gravitated toward the more affordable yet highly capable Mac Studio. With the M2 Ultra, Mac Studio delivers performance very close to the Mac Pro. This makes the higher-priced desktop less appealing to most users.
Apple is also reportedly focusing its internal resources on upcoming AI-driven features, next-generation MacBooks, and further development of the Vision Pro ecosystem.
While the Mac Pro may remain unchanged for longer than anticipated, Apple is still expected to update its Mac Studio and MacBook Pro lines. Both have increasingly become the preferred choice for creative professionals, developers, and power users.
The current M2 Ultra Mac Pro will stay on shelves for now. However, those hoping for an M3 Ultra-powered refresh or expanded modularity may need to wait significantly longer than previously expected.
