Highlights

  • Adidas has come up with an interesting match ball that is technologically advanced enough to tell that the Portuguese forward did not even touch it

  • The technology in question has been termed as the Connected Ball Technology by Adidas that has confirmed it.

Adidas Connected Ball Technology Turns the Tables in FIFA 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022 will most likely become the most popular sporting event of this year and it has already acquired a cult status of sorts. The event is being hosted by Qatar, where thousands of football fans are flocking in large numbers to watch their favourite teams play.

While fan wars are part and parcel of such a huge event, there has been an interesting event that took place in the Portugal-Uruguay match that has raised many an eyebrow, whilst simultaneously impressing football fans completely.

Cristiano Ronaldo had scored a goal during his opener as the centre forward for his team that took Portugal to a 2-0 win over Uruguay but now there is news surfacing that he did NOT score the goal because he didn’t even touch the ball.

Adidas used an innovative technology in the match ball called Connected Ball Technology that confirmed that Ronaldo’s head did not even come in contact with the ball during the match to score the opening goal.

The technology is one that measures the ‘heartbeat’ of players but here there was no external force on the ball that could be measured, due to which there was no ‘heartbeat’ in measurements and in the attached graphic because there is a sensor of 500Hz IMU inside the ball that allows high level accuracy in analysis.

Ronaldo’s match scoring goal was then awarded to Bruno Fernandes as the former’s alleged goal for his team in the 54th minute of the match was dismissed over Fernandes’ cross in the box that beat Sergio Richet in goal.

Conclusion

Once the photos were shared by ESPN, it was confirmed that Ronaldo’s head did not come in contact with the ball at all, which is why Fernandes was awarded the points, although both players did not know at the time as to whose goal it was.
