High-speed 6G internet might not be available until the year 2030, although the current 5G network still has plenty of speed marvels to offer.
As per a report, researchers in Japan recently tested 6G and achieved a staggering 100 billion bits per second.
This speed is five times faster than the highest 5G speeds and a remarkable 500 times faster than what our 5G smartphones currently achieve.
Downloading data at 100 billion bits per second is difficult to imagine.
But you can imagine downloading a two-hour movie in just a few blinks of an eye.
That’s what 6G brings – and a lot more.
With 6G, you can download eight or nine such large files in one second!
Added to this, 6G allows more devices to communicate on the same network without congestion.
The 6G technology tested uses extremely high frequencies, ranging from 100 to 300 gigahertz.
From here, our minds pop with multiple applications.
These speeds can make self-driving cars possible, enable remote surgeries, and allow people to quickly download very large videos—functionalities that 4G and 5G cannot provide.
But achieving these top speeds with 6G requires highly advanced technology operating in ideal conditions.
Our expectations for 6G must be tempered.
The report also suggests that 6G could make traditional home WiFi systems obsolete.
Although it sounds unbelievable, the advancements in 5G are already leading us in that direction.
Nevertheless, successful 6G tests don’t mean it will be available immediately—it could be six years or more before we can fully utilize 6G’s extraordinary capabilities.
The designers of 6G envision even more transformative technologies beyond just speed.
They talk about holographic video calls that could make in-person meetings seem outdated.
They also propose the idea of direct mind-to-mind communication, eliminating the need for spoken words.
To no one’s surprise, building this 6G network is a monumental challenge.
It will take significant engineering efforts to manage these powerful signals before they can be deployed globally.
It’s a long and extraordinary journey until we can enjoy the vast potential of 6G and move beyond 5G.
