Launched in 2016, Google has announced to shut down its YouTube Go app. According to the latest update, YouTube Go will be shut down in August this year. YouTube Go users will be able to participate in creation and community and have access to an overall improved user experience by using the main YouTube app. Google has not mentioned reason for shutting down the YouTube Go app.

The announcement was made in an official blog post. It said that the lightweight alternative to its main app is going away because it has become unnecessary over the years.

Google designed the app to serve the consumers and viewers in locations where connectivity, data prices, and low-end devices prevented it from delivering the best experience in the main YouTube app.

YouTube Go users have been recommend to install the main YouTube app or visit youtube.com in their browsers.

The main YouTube app provides a better overall user experience as compared to the YouTube Go. Also, there are some features such as the ability to comment, post, create content, and use dark theme are exclusive to the main YouTube.

“YouTube has invested in improvements to the main YouTube app that make it perform better in these environments, while also delivering a better user experience which is inclusive of our entire community. Specifically, we have improved performance for entry-level devices or those that watch YouTube on slower networks. We’re also building out additional user controls that help to decrease mobile data usage for viewers with limited data – so stay tuned for more updates,” reads a blog post by Meaghan, community manager, TeamYouTube.
