Meta has updated its Threads app, a microblogging competitor to X, to allow users to delete their Threads account without affecting their Instagram account.
This change addresses a significant concern from users who previously could not separate their Threads and Instagram accounts.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced that the latest Threads app version for both iOS and Android includes a new feature enabling users to manage their Threads account independently.
In the app’s settings, under ‘Account’, users now find two options: ‘Delete or Deactivate Profile’.
Selecting ‘Deactivate Profile’ archives user data, allowing for easy reactivation in the future.
Opting for ‘Delete Profile’ permanently removes the user’s Threads profile and posts while keeping their Instagram account intact.
This update reflects Meta’s response to user feedback, as many had requested the ability to leave Threads without losing their Instagram account.
The feature is gradually rolling out, meaning it may not be immediately available to all users even after updating the app.
In addition to account deletion independence, Threads has introduced a privacy setting that allows users to opt out of having their posts suggested on Facebook and Instagram.
Threads has experienced a mixed journey since its launch, quickly gaining 100 million users but facing user drop-off due to lacking features.
These new updates are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to refine the platform and enhance user experience and control.
The latest Threads app update introduces a feature that allows users to delete their Threads account without impacting their Instagram account. This provides greater control over their social media presence and account management.
In the Threads app, users can go to Settings > Account > Delete or Deactivate Profile. They have the option to either permanently delete their account or deactivate it. Deactivation archives the data, while deletion removes the profile and posts entirely.
No, deleting your Threads account will not affect your Instagram account. This update was specifically designed to separate Threads account management from Instagram, addressing user requests for more independence between the two platforms.
