Samsung has initiated the rollout of the January 2024 security update for its range of flagship smartphones.
This comprehensive update, already observed in Europe, is set to enhance the security of various Galaxy models, including the latest S23, as well as the S22, S21, and several models in the Z and Note series.
The update, identifiable by specific firmware versions for each device model, addresses a substantial number of security vulnerabilities.
Notably, the patch rectifies a critical security flaw and an additional 67 issues classified as ‘High’ priority.
These fixes cover a range of concerns, including a notable fix in the Bluetooth pairing mechanism, which previously allowed unauthorized pairing without user consent.
Additionally, a bug fix related to Samsung DeX has been included, which previously permitted unauthorized access to notifications in multi-user scenarios.
While there is anticipation regarding the inclusion of a screen burn-in protection feature in this update, its presence remains unconfirmed.
This feature, aimed at reducing OLED screen degradation, was expected as part of Samsung’s commitment to address this issue.
The January security update, notable for its size and comprehensive nature, is also expected to be available soon in the United States, following its European release.
The update extends beyond the S series to encompass the Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5, Z Fold4, Z Flip4, A54, and Note20 models.
Notably, the FE editions of these devices do not appear to be part of this current update wave.
Samsung users can expect their devices to automatically download the update, but manual checking is also possible through the device’s settings under ‘Software update’.
This proactive approach by Samsung in addressing security concerns reinforces its commitment to maintaining the integrity and safety of its devices for users.
In addition to this security update, Samsung enthusiasts are also eagerly anticipating the upcoming Galaxy S24 series launch, set for January 17.
Alongside the new S24 models, Samsung is expected to unveil its advancements in AI technology, including a feature named “AI Live Translate Call,” showcasing the integration of real-time translation capabilities.
Samsung’s January 2024 update is a comprehensive security patch that resolves one critical and 67 high-priority security issues.
This update is significant for enhancing device safety and user privacy across various Galaxy models.
The update is being rolled out for several flagship models including the Galaxy S23, S22, S21, and devices in the Z and Note series.
It’s currently available in Europe and expected to be released in the U.S. soon.
The update includes crucial fixes, such as a vulnerability in the Bluetooth pairing process and a bug in Samsung DeX that allowed access to another user’s notifications in a multi-user environment.
Although anticipated, it remains unclear if the screen burn-in protection feature, which prevents OLED screen degradation, is part of this security patch.
