Apple has recently announced the closure of its Data Operations Annotations team in San Diego, which comprises 121 employees.
This team has been integral in advancing the company’s artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly focusing on enhancing the voice service queries of Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant.
Established primarily as a group of contractors who monitored Siri queries, the team was converted to full-time Apple employees in 2019.
This transition coincided with the company making the listening to Siri queries an optional feature for users.
Over time, the San Diego team’s scope expanded to include multiple languages like Hebrew, English, various Spanish dialects, Portuguese, Arabic, and French.
Apple’s decision, communicated by a senior deputy to AI chief John Giannandrea and later confirmed by the company, involves relocating this team to Austin, Texas.
This move is part of Apple’s larger strategy to consolidate its US-based Data Operations Annotations teams at its Austin campus, where most of the team is already located.
The company has offered the San Diego employees the opportunity to continue their roles in Austin.
However, they must decide by the end of February if they wish to relocate.
Those who choose not to move will face termination by April 26.
To facilitate this transition, Apple is providing a $7,000 relocation stipend to those who move to Austin by the end of June.
Employees who decline the offer will receive severance pay based on their tenure and six months of health insurance.
This decision has come as a surprise to many employees, especially since prior indications suggested a relocation to a new Apple campus within the San Diego region.
The sudden shift to Texas has led to concerns among several team members, particularly regarding their eligibility for roles in Austin due to varying professional backgrounds.
Apple has encouraged these employees to apply for other positions within the company, although details about these alternative employment opportunities are not fully clear.
This move marks a significant step for Apple, which has largely avoided layoffs and major team relocations, especially during the pandemic.
While the company previously made some cuts in corporate retail jobs and recruiter positions last April, the band relocation of the San Diego AI team represent a notable change in its operational strategy.
Apple has decided to consolidate its US-based Data Operations Annotations teams to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
The San Diego team, specializing in Siri enhancements, is being merged with the team in Austin, reflecting this strategy.
The closure of the San Diego Data Operations Annotations team affects 121 employees.
These team members were primarily responsible for advancing Apple’s AI, focusing on Siri’s voice service queries.
Employees of the San Diego AI team are given the option to relocate to Apple’s Austin campus.
They must decide by the end of February, with a $7,000 stipend offered for those moving by the end of June.
Those who choose not to relocate will receive severance and health insurance benefits.
Many team members have expressed reluctance to relocate, citing concerns about role eligibility in Austin due to diverse professional backgrounds.
Apple has advised these employees to apply for other positions within the company.
The breakthrough in AI efficiency opens new possibilities for future iPhones, such as more advanced Siri capabilities, real-time language translation, and sophisticated AI-driven features in photography and augmented reality.
The technology also sets the stage for iPhones to run complex AI assistants and chatbots on-device, something Apple is already said to be working on.
Apple’s work on generative AI could eventually be incorporated into its Siri voice assistant.
Apple in February 2023 held an AI summit and briefed employees on its large language model work.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is aiming for a smarter version of Siri that’s deeply integrated with AI.
Apple is planning to update the way that Siri interacts with the Messages app, allowing users to field complex questions and auto-complete sentences more effectively.
Beyond that, Apple is rumored to be planning to add AI to as many Apple apps as possible.
Apple is reportedly developing its own generative AI model called “Ajax”. Designed to rival the likes of OpenAI’s GPT-3 and GPT-4, Ajax operates on 200 billion parameters, suggesting a high level of complexity and capability in language understanding and generation.
Internally known as “Apple GPT,” Ajax aims to unify machine learning development across Apple, suggesting a broader strategy to integrate AI more deeply into Apple’s ecosystem.

As per recent reports, Apple plans to launch generative AI features on the iPhone and iPad by late 2024, aligning with the release of iOS 18.
The company is building a robust infrastructure with AI servers to support a blend of cloud-based and on-device AI processing.
Responses from news organizations to Apple’s proposal have been mixed. Some executives are optimistic about the collaboration, while others express concern over legal liabilities and Apple’s long-term AI and news strategy.
The apprehension stems from potential legal challenges related to the use of their content in AI training.
Apple has made significant strides in AI research, most notably with two innovative papers.
The ‘HUGS’ technique simplifies creating animated 3D avatars from monocular videos, and a new framework focuses on efficient language model inference.
These advancements suggest a future where powerful AI like ChatGPT could be accessible on Apple devices.
Apple is set to unveil a series of AI-based tools at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), with implementations in products such as the iPhone.
These tools are part of Apple’s initiative to integrate AI more deeply into their product ecosystem.
The upcoming iOS 18 is expected to bring several AI enhancements, including auto-summarizing and auto-complete functionalities for core apps, integration of AI into Apple Music, an overhaul of Siri, and new AI-powered tools for developers.
“Ajax” is Apple’s proprietary language model that has been in testing since early 2023.
It aims to embed AI capabilities into various applications like Pages, Keynote, and Apple Music, focusing on streamlining workflows and enhancing user experiences.
While Apple is announcing its AI upgrades in 2024, the full-scale implementation of these features is not expected until 2025.
This gradual rollout indicates Apple’s careful approach to integrating AI into its products.
